A strong laser impact on spin precession of a charged particle in the semi-relativistic interaction regime

In the present note new effects concerned the dynamics of a charged spin-1/2 particle in a strong monochromatic plane wave background are discussed beyond the conventional dipole approximation. Namely using the semiclassical approach in the semi-relativistic regime it is shown that the magnetic forces associated with the laser field have been retained and alter the spin evolution appreciably.

Local invariants for mixed qubit-qutrit states

In the present paper few steps are undertaken towards the description of the qubit-qutrit pair - quantum bipartite system composed of two and three level subsystems. The computational difficulties with the construction of the local unitary polynomial invariants are discussed. Calculations of the Molien functions and Poincare series for the qubit-qubit and qubit-qutrit local unitary invariants are outlined and compared with the known results. The requirement of positive semi-definiteness of the density operator is formulated explicitly as a set of inequalities in five Casimir invariants of the algebra su(6).

On the ring of local polynomial invariants for a pair of entangled qubits

The entanglement characteristics of two qubits are encoded in the invariants of the adjoint action of SU(2) x SU(2) group on the space of density matrices defined as the space of positive semi-definite Hermitian matrices. The corresponding ring of polynomial invariants is studied. The special integrity basis for this ring is described and constraints on its elements due to the positive semi-definiteness of density matrices are given explicitly in the form of polynomial inequalities. The suggested basis is characterized by the property that only a minimal number of invariants, namely two primary invariants of degree 2, 3 and one secondary invariant of degree 4 appearing in the Hironaka decomposition of the ring are subject to the polynomial inequalities.

Effect of a strong laser on spin precession

The semiclassical dynamics of a charged spin-1/2 particle in an intense electromagnetic plane wave is analyzed beyond the electric dipole approximation and taking into account the leading relativistic corrections to the Pauli equation. It is argued that the adiabatic spin evolution driven by a low intensity radiation changes its character drastically as an intensity of a laser is increasing. Particularly, it is shown that a charged particle exposes a spin flip resonance at a certain pick value of a laser field strength, which is determined by a particle's gyromagnetic ratio.

Classical dynamics of a charged particle in a laser field beyond the dipole approximation

The classical dynamics of a charged particle traveling in a laser field modeled by an elliptically polarized monochromatic electromagnetic plane wave is discussed within the time reparametrization invariant form of the non-relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi theory. The exact parametric representation for a particle's orbit in an arbitrary plane wave background beyond the dipole approximation and including effect of the magnetic field is derived. For an elliptically polarized monochromatic plane wave the particle's trajectory, as an explicit function of the laboratory frame's time, is given in terms of the Jacobian elliptic functions, whose modulus is proportional to the laser's intensity and depends on the polarization of radiation. It is shown that the system exposes the ``intensity duality'', correspondence between the motion in the backgrounds with various intensities. In virtue of the modular properties of the Jacobian functions, by starting with the representative ``fundamental solution'' and applying a certain modular transformations one can obtain the particle's orbit in the monochromatic plane wave background with arbitrarily prescribed characteristics.

Magnetic monopoles in 4D: a perturbative calculation

We address the question of defining the second quantised monopole creation operator in the 3+1 dimensional Georgi-Glashow model, and calculating its expectation value in the confining phase. Our calculation is performed directly in the continuum theory within the framework of perturbation theory. We find that, although it is possible to define the "coherent state" operator M(x) that creates the Coulomb magnetic field, the dependence of this operator on the Dirac string does not disappear even in the nonabelian theory. This is due to the presence of the charged fields (W^{\pm}). We also set up the calculation of the expectation value of this operator in the confining phase and show that it is not singular along the Dirac string. We find that in the leading order of the perturbation theory the VEV vanishes as a power of the volume of the system. This is in accordance with our naive expectation. We expect that nonperturbative effects will introduce an effective infrared cutoff on the calculation making the VEV finite.

The Higgs field and the ultraviolet behaviour of the vortex operator in 2+1 dimensions

We calculate the change in the ultraviolet behaviour of the vortex operator due to the presence of dynamical Higgs field in both 2+1 dimensional QED and the 2+1 dimensional Georgi-Glashow model. We find that in the QED case the presence of the Higgs field leads at the one loop level to power like correction to the propagator of the vortex operator. On the other hand, in the Georgi-Glashow model, the adjoint Higgs at one loop has no affect on the vortex propagator. Thus, as long as the mass of the Higgs field is much larger than the gauge coupling constant, the ultraviolet behaviour of the vortex operator in the Georgi-Glashow model is independent of the Higgs mass.

On cosmological perturbations in FRW model with scalar field and false vacuum decay

The unconstrained reduced action corresponding to the dynamics of scalar fluctuations about the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) background is derived using Dirac's method of description of singular Lagrangian systems. The results are applied to so-called negative mode problem in description of tunneling transitions with gravity. With our special choice of physical variable, the kinetic term of the reduced action has a conventional signature for a wide class of models. In this representation, the existence of a negative mode justifying the false vacuum decay picture turns out to be manifest. We also explain how the present result becomes consistent with the previously proved ``no negative mode (supercritical supercurvature mode) theorem''.
