Waist of balls in hyperbolic and spherical spaces

In this paper we find a tight estimate for Gromov's waist of the balls in spaces of constant curvature, deduce the estimates for the balls in Riemannian manifolds with upper bounds on the curvature ($\mathrm{CAT}(κ)$-spaces), and establish similar result for normed spaces.

Estimating symplectic capacities from lengths of closed curves on the unit spheres

We improve the estimates for the Ekeland--Hofer--Zehnder capacity of convex bodies by Gluskin and Ostrover. In the course of our argument we show that a closed characteristic of minimal action on the boundary of a centrally symmetric convex body in $\mathbb R^{2n}$ must itself be centrally symmetric, with generalizations to some other types of symmetry.

Two circles and only a straightedge

We answer a question of David Hilbert: given two circles it is not possible in general to construct their centers using only a straightedge. On the other hand, we give infinitely many families of pairs of circles for which such construction is possible.

Lower and upper bounds for the waists of different spaces

We prove several new results around Gromov's waist theorem. We give a simple proof of Vaaler's theorem on sections of the unit cube using the Borsuk--Ulam--Crofton technique. We consider waists of real and complex projective spaces, flat tori, convex bodies in Euclidean space. We establish waist-type results in terms of the Hausdorff measure.

Incircular nets and confocal conics

We consider congruences of straight lines in a plane with the combinatorics of the square grid, with all elementary quadrilaterals possessing an incircle. It is shown that all the vertices of such nets (we call them incircular or IC-nets) lie on confocal conics. Our main new results are on checkerboard IC-nets in the plane. These are congruences of straight lines in the plane with the combinatorics of the square grid, combinatorially colored as a checkerboard, such that all black coordinate quadrilaterals possess inscribed circles. We show how this larger class of IC-nets appears quite naturally in Laguerre geometry of oriented planes and spheres, and leads to new remarkable incidence theorems. Most of our results are valid in hyperbolic and spherical geometries as well. We present also generalizations in spaces of higher dimension, called checkerboard IS-nets. The construction of these nets is based on a new 9 inspheres incidence theorem.

On the number of points in a lattice polytope

In this article we will show that for every natural $d$ and $n>1$ there exists a natural number $t$ such that for every $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $\mathcal{T}$ with vertices in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, the number of lattice points in the $t^{\mathrm{th}}$ dilate of $\mathcal{T}$ is exactly $χ(\mathcal{T})$ modulo $n$, where $χ(\mathcal{T})$ is the Euler characteristic of $\mathcal{T}$.

$3$-webs generated by confocal conics and circles

We consider families of confocal conics and two pencils of Apollonian circles having the same foci. We will show that these families of curves generate trivial 3-webs and find the exact formulas describing them.

On the Circle Covering Theorem by A. W. Goodman and R. E. Goodman

In 1945, A. W. Goodman and R. E. Goodman proved the following conjecture by P. Erdős: Given a family of (round) disks of radii $r_1$, $\ldots$, $r_n$ in the plane it is always possible to cover them by a disk of radius $R = \sum r_i$, provided they cannot be separated into two subfamilies by a straight line disjoint from the disks. In this note we show that essentially the same idea may work for different analogues and generalizations of their result. In particular, we prove the following: Given a family of positive homothetic copies of a fixed convex body $K \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ with homothety coefficients $τ_1, \ldots, τ_n > 0$ it is always possible to cover them by a translate of $\frac{d+1}{2}\left(\sum τ_i\right)K$, provided they cannot be separated into two subfamilies by a hyperplane disjoint from the homothets.

Algebraic vertices of non-convex polyhedra

In this article we define an algebraic vertex of a generalized polyhedron and show that it is the smallest set of points needed to define the polyhedron. We prove that the indicator function of a generalized polytope $P$ is a linear combination of indicator functions of simplices whose vertices are algebraic vertices of $P$. We also show that the indicator function of any generalized polyhedron is a linear combination, with integer coefficients, of indicator functions of cones with apices at algebraic vertices and line-cones. The concept of an algebraic vertex is closely related to the Fourier--Laplace transform. We show that a point $\mathbf{v}$ is an algebraic vertex of a generalized polyhedron $P$ if and only if the tangent cone of $P$, at $\mathbf{v}$, has non-zero Fourier--Laplace transform.

On the Lengths of Curves Passing through Boundary Points of a Planar Convex Shape

We study the lengths of curves passing through a fixed number of points on the boundary of a convex shape in the plane. We show that for any convex shape $K$, there exist four points on the boundary of $K$ such that the length of any curve passing through these points is at least half of the perimeter of $K$. It is also shown that the same statement does not remain valid with the additional constraint that the points are extreme points of $K$. Moreover, the factor $\frac12$ cannot be achieved with any fixed number of extreme points. We conclude the paper with few other inequalities related to the perimeter of a convex shape.

Bounding minimal solid angles of polytopes

In this article we study the following question: What can be the measure of the minimal solid angle of a simplex in $\mathbb{R}^d$? We show that in dimensions three it is not greater than the solid angle of the regular simplex. And in dimension four the same holds for simplices sufficiently close to the regular simplex. We also study a similar question for trihedral and dihedral angles of polyhedra compared to those of regular solids.

Billiards in convex bodies with acute angles

In this paper we investigate the existence of closed billiard trajectories in not necessarily smooth convex bodies. In particular, we show that if a body $K\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ has the property that the tangent cone of every non-smooth point $q\in \partial K$ is acute (in a certain sense) then there is a closed billiard trajectory in $K$.

Minimal resistance of curves under the single impact assumption

We consider the hollow on the half-plane $\{(x,y) : y \le 0\} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ defined by a function $u : (-1, 1) \to \mathbb{R}$, $u(x) < 0$ and a vertical flow of point particles incident on the hollow. It is assumed that $u$ satisfies the so-called single impact condition (SIC): each incident particle is elastically reflected by graph$(u)$ and goes away without hitting the graph of $u$ anymore. We solve the problem: find the function $u$ minimizing the force of resistance created by the flow. We show that the graph of the minimizer is formed by two arcs of parabolas symmetric to each other with respect to the $y$-axis. Assuming that the resistance of $u \equiv 0$ equals 1, we show that the minimal resistance equals $π/2 - 2\arctan(1/2) \approx 0.6435$. This result completes the previously obtained result stating in particular that the minimal resistance of a hollow in higher dimensions equals 0.5. We additionally consider a similar problem of minimal resistance, where the hollow in the half-space $\{(x_1,\ldots,x_d, y) : y \le 0 \} \subset \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ is defined by a radial function $U$ satisfying SIC, $U(x) = u(|x|)$, with $x = (x_1,\ldots,x_d), u(ξ) < 0$ for $0 \le ξ< 1$ and $u(ξ) = 0$ for $ξ\ge 1$, and the flow is parallel to the $y$-axis. The minimal resistance is greater than $0.5$ (and coincides with $0.6435$ when $d = 1$) and converges to $0.5$ as $d \to \infty$.

Cutting the same fraction of several measures

We study some measure partition problems: Cut the same positive fraction of $d+1$ measures in $\mathbb R^d$ with a hyperplane or find a convex subset of $\mathbb R^d$ on which $d+1$ given measures have the same prescribed value. For both problems positive answers are given under some additional assumptions.

Kadets type theorems for partitions of a convex body

For convex partitions of a convex body $B$ we prove that we can put a homothetic copy of $B$ into each set of the partition so that the sum of homothety coefficients is $\ge 1$. In the plane the partition may be arbitrary, while in higher dimensions we need certain restrictions on the partition.
