Asymptotic Density of Apollonian-Type Packings

We consider two seemingly unconnected problems: first, under what circumstances are arithmetic groups like SL(2,O) generated by elementary matrices; second, when do certain classes of circle/sphere packings fill up space? We show that these are in fact deeply related, leading to some new results, new proofs of old results, and interesting conjectures.

The Ulam Sequence of the Integer Polynomial Ring

An Ulam sequence U(1,n) is defined as the sequence starting with integers 1,n such that n > 1, and such that every subsequent term is the smallest integer that can be written as the sum of distinct previous terms in exactly one way. This family of sequences is notable for being the subject of several remarkable rigidity conjectures. We introduce an analogous notion of an Ulam sequence inside the polynomial ring Z[X], and use it both to give new, constructive proofs of old results as well as producing a new conjecture that implies many of the other existing conjectures.

Algebraic Groups Constructed From Rings with Involution

We define a class of groups constructed from rings equipped with an involution. We show that under suitable conditions, these groups are either algebraic or arithmetic, including as special cases the orientation-preserving isometry group of hyperbolic 4-space, $SL(2,R)$ for any commutative ring $R$, various symplectic and orthogonal groups, and an important class of arithmetic subgroups of $SO^+(4,1)$. We investigate when such groups are isomorphic and conjugate, and relate this to problem of determining when hyperbolic $4$-orbifolds are homotopic.

Algebraic Groups Constructed from Orders of Quaternion Algebras

We show that all spin groups of non-definite, quinary quadratic forms over a field with characteristic 0 can be represented as 2 by 2 matrices with entries in an associated quaternion algebra. Over local and global fields, we further study maximal arithmetic subgroups of such groups, and show that examples can be produced by studying orders of the quaternion algebra. In both cases, we relate the algebraic properties of the underlying rings to sufficient and necessary conditions for the groups to be isomorphic and/or conjugate to one another.

Quaternion Orders and Sphere packings

We introduce an analog of Bianchi groups for rational quaternion algebras and use it to construct sphere packings that are analogs of the Apollonian circle packing known as integral crystallographic packings.

The Unreasonable Rigidity of Ulam Sets

We give a number of results about families of Ulam sets. Generalizing behavior of Ulam sets U(1,n), we prove using an novel model theoretic approach that there is a rigidity phenomenon for Ulam sets U(a,b) as b increases. Based on this, we suggest a natural conjecture, and investigate its potential applications, including a method of proving certain families of Ulam sequences are regular, for which we also provide partial, unconditional, results. Along this same vein, we give an upper bound bound on the density of Ulam sequences U(1,n). Finally, we give classification results for higher dimensional Ulam sets.

Orders of Quaternion Algebras with Involution

We introduce the notion of maximal orders over quaternion algebras with orthogonal involution and give a classification over local fields, and a partial classification over algebraic number fields.
