Cosmic Rulers: Masers as Tools for Probing Structure in the Galaxy and Beyond, from AU to kpc

Maser emission provides an unique window into astronomical sources across vast spatial scales - from tens to hundreds of astronomical units around protostars and evolved stars up to kiloparsecs in distant galaxies. These natural microwave amplifiers penetrate dust shells in star-forming regions, revealing the dynamics of accretion disks and outflows, trace envelopes and winds of evolved stars, map Galactic structure, while also allowing us to follow the evolution of all these systems. Owing to their compactness and brightness masers provide precise astrometry as cosmic rulers: measuring positions, structures and kinematics in dense regions, not easily accessible at other wavelengths. SKA-Mid will observe hydroxyl, methanol, and formaldehyde masers using bands 2, 5a and 5b, and later methylidyne radical masers in band 4. SKA-Mid's sensitivity and broad frequency coverage will support discoveries of new maser types and allow for simultaneous multi-transition and multi-species maser observations. In addition, bright masers can serve in the science verification of the SKA-Mid array during the deployment phase.

Chemical Complexity in the Early Stages of Star Formation in the SKAO Era

About 350 molecules have been identified in the interstellar medium (ISM), including complex molecules relevant to prebiotic chemistry. A remarkable level of molecular diversity has been observed from the earliest stages of star formation, providing the initial chemical inventory inherited by planetary systems. Radio observations have played a pivotal role in these discoveries, starting with the identification of the first polyatomic molecule, $\text{NH}_3$ (Cheung et al. 1968). (Sub-)millimeter observations have revealed complex organic molecules of prebiotic relevance, including formamide ($\text{NH}_2\text{CHO}$), glycolaldehyde ($\text{CH}_2\text{OHCHO}$), and even urea ($(\text{NH}_2)_2\text{CO}$), and hydroxylamine ($\text{NH}_2\text{OH}$), which are possible precursors of RNA nucleotides (Ceccarelli et al. 2023; Jiménez-Serra et al. 2020). However, in dense protostellar regions, dust opacity hampers the detection of molecular emission. Additionally, large molecules and those containing heavy atoms, which have rotational transitions at lower frequencies, often remain inaccessible to current instruments. The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) will provide an unprecedented combination of sensitivity and angular resolution at radio wavelengths. This will allow for the detection of prebiotic species and offer new insights into the chemical pathways that shape emerging planetary systems (Jiménez-Serra et al. 2022). This chapter details the scientific questions and advancements that the SKAO, and more specifically, SKA-Mid equipped with the Band 5 receivers, will pursue in the field of astrochemistry, focusing on the chemical complexity in both high-mass and solar-type star-forming regions.

Small Molecules, Big Impact: A tale of hydrides past, present, and future

Formed at an early stage of gas-phase ion-molecule chemistry, hydrides -- molecules containing a heavy element covalently bonded to one or more hydrogen atoms -- play an important role in interstellar chemistry as they are the progenitors of larger and more complex species in the interstellar medium. In recent years, the careful analysis of the spectral signatures of hydrides have led to their use as tracers of different constituents, and phases of the interstellar medium and in particular the more diffuse environments. Diffuse clouds form an essential link in the stellar gas life-cycle as they connect both the late and early stages of stellar evolution. As a result, diffuse clouds are continuously replenished by material which makes them reservoirs for heavy elements and hence ideal laboratories for the study of astrochemistry. This review will journey through a renaissance of hydride observations detailing puzzling hydride discoveries and chemical mysteries with special focus carbon-bearing hydrides to demonstrate the big impact of these small molecules and ending with remarks on the future of their studies.
