Transitivity, lowness, and ranks in NSOP$_1$ theories

We develop the theory of Kim-independence in the context of NSOP$_{1}$ theories satsifying the existence axiom. We show that, in such theories, Kim-independence is transitive and that $\ind^{K}$-Morley sequences witness Kim-dividing. As applications, we show that, under the assumption of existence, in a low NSOP$_{1}$ theory, Shelah strong types and Lascar strong types coincide and, additionally, we introduce a notion of rank for NSOP$_{1}$ theories.

Semi-equational theories

We introduce and study semi-equational and weakly semi-equational theories, generalizing equationality in stable theories (in the sense of Srour) to the NIP context. In particular, we establish a connection to distality via one-sided strong honest definitions; demonstrate that certain trees are semi-equational, while algebraically closed valued fields are not weakly semi-equational; and obtain a general criterion for weak semi-equationality of an expansion of a distal structure by a new predicate.

Combinatorial properties of non-archimedean convex sets

We study combinatorial properties of convex sets over arbitrary valued fields. We demonstrate analogs of some classical results for convex sets over the reals (e.g. the fractional Helly theorem and Bárány's theorem on points in many simplices), along with some additional properties not satisfied by convex sets over the reals, including finite breadth and VC-dimension. These results are deduced from a simple combinatorial description of modules over the valuation ring in a spherically complete valued field.

Model-theoretic Elekes-Szabó for stable and o-minimal hypergraphs

A theorem of Elekes and Szabó recognizes algebraic groups among certain complex algebraic varieties with maximal size intersections with finite grids. We establish a generalization to relations of any arity and dimension, definable in: 1) stable structures with distal expansions (includes algebraically and differentially closed fields of characteristic $0$); and 2) $o$-minimal expansions of groups. Our methods provide explicit bounds on the power saving exponent in the non-group case. Ingredients of the proof include: a higher arity generalization of the abelian group configuration theorem in stable structures, along with a purely combinatorial variant characterizing Latin hypercubes that arise from abelian groups; and Zarankiewicz-style bounds for hypergraphs definable in distal structures.

Definable convolution and idempotent Keisler measures II

We study convolution semigroups of invariant/finitely satisfiable Keisler measures in NIP groups. We show that the ideal (Ellis) subgroups are always trivial and describe minimal left ideals in the definably amenable case, demonstrating that they always form a Bauer simplex. Under some assumptions, we give an explicit construction of a minimal left ideal in the semigroup of measures from a minimal left ideal in the corresponding semigroup of types (this includes the case of SL$_{2}(\mathbb{R})$, which is not definably amenable). We also show that the canonical push-forward map is a homomorphism from definable convolution on $\mathcal{G}$ to classical convolution on the compact group $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{G}^{00}$, and use it to classify $\mathcal{G}^{00}$-invariant idempotent measures.

Invariant measures in simple and in small theories

We give examples of (i) a simple theory with a formula (with parameters) which does not fork over the empty set but has mu measure 0 for every automorphism invariant Keisler measure mu, and (ii) a definable group G in a simple theory such that G is not definably amenable, i.e. there is no translation invariant Keisler measure on G We also discuss paradoxical decompositions both in the setting of discrete groups and of definable groups, and prove some positive results about small theories, including the definable amenability of definable groups, and nontriviality of the graded Grothendieck ring.

Distality in valued fields and related structures

We investigate distality and existence of distal expansions in valued fields and related structures. In particular, we characterize distality in a large class of ordered abelian groups, provide an AKE-style characterization for henselian valued fields, and demonstrate that certain expansions of fields, e.g., the differential field of logarithmic-exponential transseries, are distal. As a new tool for analyzing valued fields we employ a relative quantifier elimination for pure short exact sequences of abelian groups.

Zarankiewicz's problem for semilinear hypergraphs

A bipartite graph $H = \left(V_1, V_2; E \right)$ with $|V_1| + |V_2| = n$ is semilinear if $V_i \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d_i}$ for some $d_i$ and the edge relation $E$ consists of the pairs of points $(x_1, x_2) \in V_1 \times V_2$ satisfying a fixed Boolean combination of $s$ linear equalities and inequalities in $d_1 + d_2$ variables for some $s$. We show that for a fixed $k$, the number of edges in a $K_{k,k}$-free semilinear $H$ is almost linear in $n$, namely $|E| = O_{s,k,\varepsilon}(n^{1+\varepsilon})$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$; and more generally, $|E| = O_{s,k,r,\varepsilon}(n^{r-1 + \varepsilon})$ for a $K_{k, \ldots,k}$-free semilinear $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph. As an application, we obtain the following incidence bound: given $n_1$ points and $n_2$ open boxes with axis parallel sides in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that their incidence graph is $K_{k,k}$-free, there can be at most $O_{k,\varepsilon}(n^{1+\varepsilon})$ incidences. The same bound holds if instead of boxes one takes polytopes cut out by the translates of an arbitrary fixed finite set of halfspaces. We also obtain matching upper and (superlinear) lower bounds in the case of dyadic boxes on the plane, and point out some connections to the model-theoretic trichotomy in $o$-minimal structures (showing that the failure of an almost linear bound for some definable graph allows one to recover the field operations from that graph in a definable manner).

On n-dependent groups and fields II

We continue the study of $n$-dependent groups, fields and related structures, largely motivated by the conjecture that every $n$-dependent field is dependent. We provide evidence towards this conjecture by showing that every infinite $n$-dependent valued field of positive characteristic is henselian, obtaining a variant of Shelah's Henselianity Conjecture in this case and generalizing a recent result of Johnson for dependent fields. Additionally, we prove a result on intersections of type-definable connected components over generic sets of parameters in $n$-dependent groups, generalizing Shelah's absoluteness of $G^{00}$ in dependent theories and relative absoluteness of $G^{00}$ in $2$-dependent theories. In an effort to clarify the scope of this conjecture, we provide new examples of strictly $2$-dependent fields with additional structure, showing that Granger's examples of non-degenerate bilinear forms over dependent fields are $2$-dependent. Along the way, we obtain some purely model-theoretic results of independent interest: we show that $n$-dependence is witnessed by formulas with all but one variable singletons; provide a type-counting criterion for $2$-dependence and use it to deduce $2$-dependence for compositions of dependent relations with arbitrary binary functions (the Composition Lemma); and show that an expansion of a geometric theory $T$ by a generic predicate is dependent if and only if it is $n$-dependent for some $n$, if and only if the algebraic closure in $T$ is disintegrated. An appendix by Martin Bays provides an explicit isomorphism in the Kaplan-Scanlon-Wagner theorem.

Definable regularity lemmas for NIP hypergraphs

We present a systematic study of the regularity phenomena for NIP hypergraphs and connections to the theory of (locally) generically stable measures, providing a model-theoretic hypergraph version of the results from [L. Lovász, B. Szegedy, "Regularity partitions and the topology of graphons", An irregular mind, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010, 415-446]. Besides, we revise the two extremal cases of regularity for stable and distal hypergraphs, improving and generalizing the results from [A. Chernikov, S. Starchenko, "Regularity lemma for distal structures", J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 2437-2466] and [M. Malliaris, S. Shelah, "Regularity lemmas for stable graphs", Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 366.3, 2014, 1551-1585]. Finally, we consider a related question of the existence of large (approximately) homogeneous definable subsets of NIP hypergraphs and provide some positive results and counterexamples.

Definable convolution and idempotent Keisler measures

We initiate a systematic study of the convolution operation on Keisler measures, generalizing the work of Newelski in the case of types. Adapting results of Glicksberg, we show that the supports of generically stable (or just definable, assuming NIP) measures are nice semigroups, and classify idempotent measures in stable groups as invariant measures on type-definable subgroups. We establish left-continuity of the convolution map in NIP theories, and use it to show that the convolution semigroup on finitely satisfiable measures is isomorphic to a particular Ellis semigroup in this context.

Hypergraph regularity and higher arity VC-dimension

We generalize the fact that graphs with small VC-dimension can be approximated by rectangles, showing that hypergraphs with small VC_k-dimension (equivalently, omitting a fixed finite (k+1)-partite (k+1)-uniform hypergraph) can be approximated by k-ary cylinder sets. In the language of hypergraph regularity, this shows that when H is a k'-uniform hypergraph with small VC_k-dimension for some k<k', the decomposition of H given by hypergraph regularity only needs the first k levels---one can approximate H using sets of vertices, sets of pairs, and so on up to sets of k-tuples---and that on most of the resulting k-ary cylinder sets, the density of H is either close to 0 or close to 1. We also show a suitable converse: k'-uniform hypergraphs with large VC_k-dimension cannot have such approximations uniformly under all measures on the vertices.

Cutting lemma and Zarankiewicz's problem in distal structures

We establish a cutting lemma for definable families of sets in distal structures, as well as the optimality of the distal cell decomposition for definable families of sets on the plane in $o$-minimal expansions of fields. Using it, we generalize the results in [J. Fox, J. Pach, A. Sheffer, A. Suk, and J. Zahl. "A semi-algebraic version of Zarankiewicz's problem"] on the semialgebraic planar Zarankiewicz problem to arbitrary $o$-minimal structures, in particular obtaining an $o$-minimal generalization of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem.

Henselian valued fields and inp-minimality

We prove that every ultraproduct of $p$-adics is inp-minimal (i.e., of burden $1$). More generally, we prove an Ax-Kochen type result on preservation of inp-minimality for Henselian valued fields of equicharacteristic $0$ in the RV language.

Mekler's construction and generalized stability

Mekler's construction gives an interpretation of any structure in a finite relational language in a group (nilpotent of class $2$ and exponent $p>2$, but not finitely generated in general). Even though this construction is not a bi-interpretation, it is known to preserve some model-theoretic tameness properties of the original structure including stability and simplicity. We demonstrate that $k$-dependence of the theory is preserved, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$, and that NTP$_2$ is preserved. We apply this result to obtain first examples of strictly $k$-dependent groups (with no additional structure).

Ramsey growth in some NIP structures

We investigate bounds in Ramsey's theorem for relations definable in NIP structures. Applying model-theoretic methods to finitary combinatorics, we generalize a theorem of Bukh and Matousek [B. Bukh, J. Matoušek. "Erdős-Szekeres-type statements: Ramsey function and decidability in dimension $1$", Duke Mathematical Journal 163.12 (2014): 2243-2270] from the semialgebraic case to arbitrary polynomially bounded $o$-minimal expansions of $\mathbb{R}$, and show that it doesn't hold in $\mathbb{R}_{\exp}$. This provides a new combinatorial characterization of polynomial boundedness for $o$-minimal structures. We also prove an analog for relations definable in $P$-minimal structures, in particular for the field of the $p$-adics. Generalizing [D. Conlon, J. Fox, J. Pach, B. Sudakov, A. Suk "Ramsey-type results for semi-algebraic relations", Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 366.9 (2014): 5043-5065], we show that in distal structures the upper bound for $k$-ary definable relations is given by the exponential tower of height $k-1$.

Definably amenable NIP groups

We study definably amenable NIP groups. We develop a theory of generics, showing that various definitions considered previously coincide, and study invariant measures. Applications include: characterization of regular ergodic measures, a proof of the conjecture of Petrykowski connecting existence of bounded orbits with definable amenability in the NIP case, and the Ellis group conjecture of Newelski and Pillay connecting the model-theoretic connected component of an NIP group with the ideal subgroup of its Ellis enveloping semigroup.
