Winding, Unwinding, Rewinding the Gaia Phase Spiral

The Gaia Space Satellite has transformed the field of Galactic Dynamics by collecting 6D phase space information for hundreds of millions of stars. In 2018, it enabled the discovery of the Gaia Phase Spiral (Antoja et al., 2018), a clear signal in the vertical motion of the stars that reveals how far from equilibrium the Galactic disk is. Seven years after the discovery of this structure, a workshop dedicated to the Phase Spiral took place at the Lorentz Center. Workshop participants summarized the current state of knowledge about the Phase Spiral and identified open questions and key areas to continue progressing in understanding the origin of the Phase Spiral and the physics governing the response of the disk to perturbations. Here, we aim to summarize the content and discussions of this workshop, share the resources that have been produced at this workshop with the broader community, and invite interested individuals to join on the projects that started.

Counting mass with Gaia: Mass Density of stars and stellar remnants in the solar neighborhood

In the light of new full-sky surveys, many attempts of creating a consistent Galactic model were made. The main interest is to estimate the still poorly understood dark matter content. However, the results vary depending on methodology, assumptions, and baryonic distribution used. To understand this discrepancy, we take the first step by estimating the model-free local mass density of stars and stellar remnants. We use a complete sample from the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars within 100 pc from the Sun, together with the data on the sample of the White Dwarfs and the recent estimate of the Neutron Stars concentration in the solar neighborhood. After correction for unresolved binary stars and accounting for missing low-mass stars, we find the local mass density of stars and stellar remnants in the solar neighborhood is $ρ_{100} = 0.040^{+0.012} _{ -0.006}M_\odot pc^{-3}$ with Kroupa IMF, and $ρ_{100} = 0.037^{+0.012}_{ -0.006}M_\odot pc^{-3}$ with Chabrier IMF.

Determining the Scale Length and Height of the Milky Way's Thick Disc Using RR~Lyrae

Using the RR Lyrae surveys Gaia DR3 Specific Objects Study, PanSTARRS1 and ASAS-SN-II, we determine the Milky Way's thick disc scale length and scale height as well as the radial scale length of the galaxy's inner halo. We use a Bayesian approach to estimate these values using two independent techniques: Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling, and importance nested sampling. We consider two vertical density profiles for the thick disc. In the exponential model, the scale length of the thick disc is $h_R=2.14_{-0.17}^{+0.19}$ kpc, and its scale height is $h_z=0.64_{-0.06}^{+0.06}$ kpc. In the squared hyperbolic secant profile $sech^2$, those values are correspondingly $h_R=2.10_{-0.17}^{+0.19}$ kpc and $h_z=1.02_{-0.08}^{+0.09}$ kpc. The density distribution of the inner halo can be described as a power law function with the exponent $n =-2.35_{-0.05}^{+0.05}$ and flattening $q =0.57_{-0.02}^{+0.02}$. We also estimate the halo to disc concentration ratio as $γ=0.19_{-0.02}^{+0.02}$ for the exponential disc and $γ=0.32_{-0.03}^{+0.03}$ for the $sech^2$ disc.

Resonant Effects of a Bar on the Galactic Disk Kinematics Perpendicular to Its Plane

Detailed analysis of kinematics of the Milky Way disk in the solar neighborhood based on the GAIA DR3 catalog reveals the existence of peculiarities in the stellar velocity distribution perpendicular to the galactic plane. We study the influence of resonances -- the outer Lindblad resonance and the outer vertical Lindblad resonance -- of a rotating bar with stellar oscillations perpendicular to the plane of the disk, and their role in shaping the spatial and the velocity distributions of stars. We find that the $Z$ and $V_Z$ distributions of stars with respect to $L_Z$ are affected by the outer Lindblad resonance. The existence of bar resonance with stellar oscillations perpendicular to the plane of the disk is demonstrated for a long (large semi-axis 5 kpc) and fast rotating bar with $Ω_{b}= 60.0$ $km~s^{-1}~kpc^{-1}$. We show also that, in the model with the long and fast rotating bar, some stars in the 2:1 OLR region deviate far from their original places, entering the bar region. A combination of resonance excitation of stellar motions at the 2:1 OLR region together with strong interaction of the stars with the bar potential leads to the formation of the group of 'escapees', i.e., stars that deviate in $R$ and $Z$ -- directions at large distances from the resonance region. Simulations, however, do not demonstrate any noticeable effect on $V_Z$-distribution of stars in the solar neighborhood

Milky Way thin and thick disk kinematics with GAIA EDR3 and RAVE DR5

We present a detailed analysis of kinematics of the Milky Way disk in solar neighborhood using GAIA DR3 catalog. To determine the local kinematics of the stellar disks of the Milky Way galaxy we use a complete sample of 278,228 red giant branch (RGB) stars distributed in a cylinder, centered at the Sun with a 1 kpc radius and half-height of 0.5 kpc. We determine separately the kinematical properties of RGB stars for each Galactic hemisphere in search for possible asymmetries. The kinematical properties of the RGB stars reveal the existence of two kinematically distinct components: the thin disk with mean velocities ${V_R}, {V_ϕ}, {V_Z}$ of about -1, -239, 0 km s$^{-1}$ correspondingly and velocity dispersions $σ_R, σ_ϕ, σ_Z$ of 31, 20 and 11 km s$^{-1}$, and the Thick disk with mean velocities components of about +1, -225, 0 km s$^{-1}$, and velocity dispersions of 49, 35, and 22 km s$^{-1}$. We find that up to 500 pc height above/below the galactic plane, Thick disk stars comprise about half the stars of the disk. Such high amount of RGB stars with Thick disk kinematics points at the secular evolution scenario origin for the Thick disk of the Milky Way galaxy.
