Enhancement of axial magnetic field generation during relativistic self-channeling of laser radiation propagating along thin films

Within the framework of a stationary model of relativistic self-focusing, it is shown that the addition of a thin layer of denser plasma on the propagation axis of a circularly polarized beam increases the axial magnetic field generated by it via the inverse Faraday effect by more than a factor of 10 compared to the case of a homogeneous plasma. The magnitude of the axial field in this case can exceed the magnetic field of the laser wave, which makes it possible, at radiation intensities $\sim 10^{26}$~W/cm$^2$ potentially achievable in the near future, to approach the level of teragauss quasi-stationary fields.

Surface Ion-Sound Wave in Magnetic Arch With High Pressure Plasma

The work analytically substantiates the parameters of the surface wave found in numerical modelling of the collision of two oncoming supersonic plasma flows inside a magnetic arc in application to the experiment on the laboratory setup ``Solar Wind'' (Inst. Appl. Phys RAS). An ion-acoustic surface wave exists in the regime of dense plasma flows when their dynamic pressure is of the order of the pressure of an undisturbed magnetic field, so that the flows push the initial magnetic field out of their volume. The wave frequency is in the range between the ion gyrofrequencies inside the plasma bundle and in the outer region of the confining magnetic field. In the external rarefied medium, the near-surface structure is a heterogeneous magnetic sound, consistent in pressure and low total polarisation of the medium with the ``isotropic'' ion sound confined from the inside in a dense plasma bundle. The energy of the structure is mainly contained in the kinetic energy of the wave motion of ions inside the tube. At the same time, the electric field strength is sharply increased outside. Firstly, the latter circumstance arises from the need to maintain a uniform electron electric drift velocity inside the transition layer. Secondly, the energetically weak ion sound propagating into the outer environment is close to electrostatic ion oscillations below the ion gyrofrequency in the external region, which are characterised by increased electric field strength across the ambient magnetic field.

Influence of finite ion Larmor radius on the dynamics of weakly-collisional plasma jets colliding in magnetic arch

The effect of the finite ion Larmor radius on the dynamics of two counterstreaming weakly collisional plasma flows in a magnetic field of an arch configuration is considered. Hybrid numerical simulations show that in a system whose dimensions are close to the ion Larmor radius, more intense interaction dynamics are observed, the magnetic arch experiences a significant expansion with the formation of a region with an irregular character of magnetic lines, in which magnetic reconnection processes occur. In this case, the generation of a surface wave of the ion-cyclotron range is observed at the boundaries of the arch. An increase in the scale of the system compared to the ion Larmor radius leads to a transition to the ideal MHD regime, in which the evolution of the arch occurs much more slowly, and the development of instabilities is not observed.

Numerical modeling of two magnetized counter-propagating weakly collisional plasma flows in arch configuration

Numerical modeling of the interaction process of two counter-streaming supersonic plasma flows with an arched magnetic field configuration in the regime of a magnetic Mach number of the order of unity $M_m \sim 1$ is carried out. The flows were launched from the bases of the arch along the direction of the magnetic field. It is shown that the interaction has non-equilibrium and non-stationary nature. It is accompanied by an expansion of the resulting magnetic plasma arch due to $E \times B$ drift with the formation of a region with oppositely directed magnetic fields, in which magnetic reconnection is observed. In the subcritical regime Mm < 1 the reconnection process is slow, and in the overcritical one Mm > 1 it is more intense and leads to plasma turbulization. Filamentation of flows due to the development of Weibel instability, as well as excitation of surface waves near the ion-cyclotron frequency on the surface of the plasma tube are also observed. The modeling was carried out for the parameters of an experiment planned for the near future, which made it possible to formulate the conditions for observing the effects discovered in the modeling.

Numerical simulation of coherent summation of laser beams in the presence of non-idealities in the dipole focusing system

A programming library was developed, based on Stratton-Chu diffraction integrals for calculating reflected optical fields. Dipole-type focusing schemes with tunable number of beams and mirror placements were studied, considering the influence of phase distortion and aberrations. The intensity above $3\times 10^{26}$ W/cm$^2$ was found theoretically attainable in a system of 12 beams of 50 PW each with about 90 % of that value realistically achievable.

Generation of synchronized high-intensity x-rays and mid-infrared pulses by Doppler-shifting of relativistically intense radiation from near-critical-density plasmas

It is shown that when relativistically intense ultrashort laser pulses are reflected from the boundary of a plasma with a near-critical density, Doppler frequency shift leads to generation of intense radiation both in the high-frequency, up to the X-ray, range, and in the low-frequency, mid-infrared, range. The efficiency of energy conversion into the wavelength range of greater than 3 $μ$m can reach several percent, which makes it possible to obtain relativistically intense pulses in the mid-infrared range. These pulses are synchronized with high harmonics in the ultraviolet and X-ray ranges, which opens up opportunities for high-precision pump-probe measurements, in particular, laser-induced electron diffraction and transient absorption spectroscopy.

Effect of a femtosecond-scale temporal structure of a laser driver on generation of betatron radiation by wakefield accelerated electrons

A brightness of a betatron radiation generated by laser wakefield accelerated electrons can be increased by utilizing the laser driver with shorter duration at the same energy. Such shortening is possible by pulse compression after its nonlinear self-phase modulation in thin plate. However, this method can lead to a rather complex femtosecond-scale time structure of the pulse. In this work, the results of numerical simulations show that the presence of a pedestal or prepulses containing few percents or more of the main pulse energy can inhibit the acceleration process and lead to lower energies of accelerated electrons and generated photons. Simultaneously, the presence of a relatively long and intense postpulse following the main pulse at optimal distance can enhance the oscillations of accelerating electrons and increase the brightness of betatron radiation.

Generation of cold magnetized relativistic plasmas at the rear of thin foils irradiated by ultra-high-intensity laser pulses

A scheme to generate magnetized relativistic plasmas in laboratory is proposed. It is based on interaction of ultra-high-intensity sub-picosecond laser pulses with few-micron thick foils or films. By means of Particle-In-Cell simulations it is shown that energetic electrons produced by the laser and evacuated at the rear of the target trigger an expansion of the target and builds up a strong azimuthal magnetic field. It is shown that in the expanding plasma sheath a ratio of the magnetic pressure and the electron rest-mass energy density exceeds unity whereas a the plasma pressure is lower than the magnetic pressure and the electron gyroradius is lower than the plasma dimension. This scheme can be utilised to study astrophysical extreme phenomena such as relativistic magnetic reconnection in laboratory.

Ultrarelativistic nanoplasmonics as a new route towards extreme intensity attosecond pulses

The generation of ultra-strong attosecond pulses through laser-plasma interactions offers the opportunity to surpass the intensity of any known laboratory radiation source, giving rise to new experimental possibilities, such as quantum electrodynamical tests and matter probing at extremely short scales. Here we demonstrate that a laser irradiated plasma surface can act as an efficient converter from the femto- to the attosecond range, giving a dramatic rise in pulse intensity. Although seemingly similar schemes have been presented in the literature, the present setup deviates significantly from previous attempts. We present a new model describing the nonlinear process of relativistic laser-plasma interaction. This model, which is applicable to a multitude of phenomena, is shown to be in excellent agreement with particle-in-cell simulations. We provide, through our model, the necessary details for an experiment to be performed. The possibility to reach intensities above 10^26 W/cm^2, using upcoming 10 petawatt laser sources, is demonstrated.
