Electronic correlations shape the low-energy optical response of the kagome antiferromagnets Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge

Using optical spectroscopy and density functional theory, we provide evidence that electron-electron interactions strongly affect the properties of the kagome antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, since its low-energy optical interband transitions arise exclusively from the correlation-modified electronic band structure. Mn$_3$Sn possesses an optical effective mass about three times larger than that of its isostructural analog Mn$_3$Ge. The DFT+$U$ treatment in the Lichtenstein formulation, with an on-site Coulomb repulsion $U = 4$~eV and Hund's coupling $J = 0.25$~eV, accounts for the optical transitions in Mn$_3$Sn, whereas those in Mn$_3$Ge are already reproduced without Hubbard corrections ($U, J = 0$). The near-isotropic electronic structure of Mn$_3$Sn reveals a three-dimensional metal whose electronic response is shaped prominently by the Mn $d$-states. The apparent linear regime in $σ_1(ω)$ observed in Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge arises from several overlapping interband transitions and therefore should not be interpreted as the optical signature of the Weyl cones. The optical response does not alter with magnetic field up to 17 T, consistent with strong free-carrier screening. Our findings establish a comprehensive-correlated picture of Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge that offers a template for other correlated topological metals.

Bulk cyclotron resonance in the topological insulator Bi2Te3

We investigated magneto-optical response of undoped Bi2Te3 films in the terahertz frequency range (0.3 - 5.1 THz, 10 - 170 cm-1) in magnetic fields up to 10 T. The optical transmission, measured in the Faraday geometry, is dominated by a broad Lorentzian-shaped mode, whose central frequency linearly increases with applied field. In zero field, the Lorentzian is centered at zero frequency, representing hence the free-carrier Drude response. We interpret the mode as a cyclotron resonance (CR) of free carriers in Bi2Te3. Because the mode's frequency position follows a linear magnetic-field dependence and because undoped Bi2Te3 is known to possess an appreciable number of bulk carriers, we associate the mode with a bulk CR. In addition, the cyclotron mass obtained from our measurements fits well the literature data on the bulk effective mass in Bi2Te3. Interestingly, the width of the CR mode demonstrates a behavior non-monotonous in field. We propose that the CR width is defined by two competing factors: impurity scattering, which rate decreases in increasing field, and electron-phonon scattering, which rate exhibits the opposite behavior.

Optical properties of superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2

We present a broadband optical-conductivity study of superconducting single-crystalline EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 with three different substitutional levels. We analyze the normal-state electrodynamics by decomposing the conductivity spectra using a Drude-Lorentz model with two Drude terms representing two groups of carriers with different scattering rates. The analysis reveals that the scattering rate of at least one of the Drude components develops linearly with temperature for each doping level. This points towards strong electron-electron correlations and a non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the P-substituted superconducting Eu-122 pnictides. We also detect a transfer of the spectral weight from mid-infrared to higher frequencies and assign it to the Hund's-rule coupling between itinerant and localized carriers. The conductivity spectra below the superconducting transition show no sharp features to be associated with the dirty-limit superconducting BCS gaps. We interpret these results in terms of clean-limit superconductivity in EuFe2(As1-xPx)2. The best parametrization fit can be achieved using a two-gap model. We find that the larger gap at the hole pockets of the Fermi surface is likely to be isotropic, while the smaller gap at the electron pockets is anisotropic or even nodal.
