Learning shape resonances from the stabilization method

Resonances in quantum mechanics are commonly introduced as quasi-bound states embedded in the continuum, a perspective that can be conceptually challenging due to the abstract nature of continuum states. In this work, we discuss an alternative approach that avoids an explicit treatment of the continuum by formulating the problem in terms of discrete quantum states. Our discussion is based on the stabilization method, in which the system is confined to a finite region such that the continuum is replaced by a discrete energy spectrum. Resonances then appear as characteristic features in the energy levels under variation of the confining box size, providing an intuitive interpretation in terms of a two-level system while remaining closely connected to standard quantum mechanics curriculum. We review the method, derive selected results, and discuss practical strategies for extracting resonance parameters from stabilization diagrams. In addition to established fitting procedures, we introduce a novel approach based on the analysis of spatial localization of resonant states, which enables a robust identification of resonance properties. The approach is illustrated using both attractive and repulsive delta-shell potentials, which serve as simple and instructive model systems amenable to analytical treatment.

Anomalous valley Hall dynamics of exciton-polaritons

The valley degree of freedom in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides provides a natural binary index for information processing. Exciton-polaritons formed under strong light-matter coupling offer a promising route to overcome the limited lifetime and transport of bare valley excitons. Here we report an anomalous optical valley Hall effect in a monolayer WS2 exciton-polariton system. Using polarization- and time-resolved real-space imaging, we directly visualize a symmetry-breaking spatial separation of polaritons from opposite valleys under linearly polarized excitation, accompanied by an ultrafast Hall drift velocity on the order of 10^5 m/s. This behaviour cannot be accounted for by conventional cavity-induced mechanisms and instead points to a strain-induced synthetic pseudomagnetic field acting on the excitonic component of polaritons. Our results establish exciton-polaritons as a high-speed and optically accessible platform for valley transport, opening pathways towards tunable valleytronic and topological photonic devices.

Necklace Ansatz for strongly repulsive spin mixtures on a ring

We propose an alternative to the Bethe Ansatz method for strongly-interacting fermionic (or bosonic) mixtures on a ring. Starting from the knowledge of the solution for single-component non-interacting fermions (or strongly-interacting bosons), we explicitly impose periodic condition on the amplitudes of the spin configurations. This reduces drastically the number of independent complex amplitudes that we determine by constrained diagonalization of an effective Hamiltonian. This procedure allows us to obtain a complete basis for the exact low-energy many-body solutions for mixtures with a large number of particles, both for $SU(κ)$ and symmetry-breaking systems.
