The defining properties of the Kontsevich unoriented graph complex

Consider the real vector space of formal sums of non-empty, finite unoriented graphs without multiple edges and loops. Let the vertices of graphs be unlabelled but let every graph $γ$ be endowed with an ordered set of edges $\mathsf{E}(γ)$. Denote by Gra the vector space of formal sums of graphs modulo the relation $(γ_1,\mathsf{E}(γ_1))-\text{sign}(σ) (γ_2,\mathsf{E}(γ_2)) = 0$ for topologically equal graphs $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ whose edge orderings differ by a permutation $σ$. The zero class in Gra is represented by sums of graphs that cancel via the above relation. The Lie bracket of graphs with ordered edge sets is defined using the insertion of a graph into vertices of the other one. We give an explicit proof of the theorems which state that the space Gra is a well\/-\/defined differential graded Lie algebra: both the Lie bracket $[{\cdot},{\cdot}]$ and the vertex\/-\/expanding differential ${\mathrm d}=[{\bullet}\!{-}\!{\bullet},{\cdot}]$ respect the calculus modulo zero graphs.

On the (non)removability of spectral parameters in $Z_2$-graded zero-curvature representations and its applications

We generalise to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded set-up a practical method for inspecting the (non)removability of parameters in zero-curvature representations for partial differential equations (PDEs) under the action of smooth families of gauge transformations. We illustrate the generation and elimination of parameters in the flat structures over $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded PDEs by analysing the link between deformation of zero-curvature representations via infinitesimal gauge transformations and, on the other hand, propagation of linear coverings over PDEs using the Frölicher--Nijenhuis bracket.

Infinitesimal deformations of Poisson bi-vectors using the Kontsevich graph calculus

Let $P$ be a Poisson structure on a finite-dimensional affine real manifold. Can $P$ be deformed in such a way that it stays Poisson? The language of Kontsevich graphs provides a universal approach -- with respect to all affine Poisson manifolds -- to finding a class of solutions to this deformation problem. For that reasoning, several types of graphs are needed. In this paper we outline the algorithms to generate those graphs. The graphs that encode deformations are classified by the number of internal vertices $k$; for $k \leqslant 4$ we present all solutions of the deformation problem. For $k \geqslant 5$, first reproducing the pentagon-wheel picture suggested at $k=6$ by Kontsevich and Willwacher, we construct the heptagon-wheel cocycle that yields a new unique solution without $2$-loops and tadpoles at $k=8$.

The calculus of multivectors on noncommutative jet spaces

The Leibniz rule for derivations is invariant under cyclic permutations of co-multiples within the arguments of derivations. We explore the implications of this principle: in effect, we construct a class of noncommutative bundles in which the sheaves of algebras of walks along a tesselated affine manifold form the base, whereas the fibres are free associative algebras or, at a later stage, such algebras quotients over the linear relation of equivalence under cyclic shifts. The calculus of variations is developed on the infinite jet spaces over such noncommutative bundles. In the frames of such field-theoretic extension of the Kontsevich formal noncommutative symplectic (super)geometry, we prove the main properties of the Batalin--Vilkovisky Laplacian and Schouten bracket. We show as by-product that the structures which arise in the classical variational Poisson geometry of infinite-dimensional integrable systems do actually not refer to the graded commutativity assumption.

Poisson brackets symmetry from the pentagon-wheel cocycle in the graph complex

Kontsevich designed a scheme to generate infinitesimal symmetries $\dot{\mathcal{P}} = \mathcal{Q}(\mathcal{P})$ of Poisson brackets $\mathcal{P}$ on all affine manifolds $M^r$; every such deformation is encoded by oriented graphs on $n+2$ vertices and $2n$ edges. In particular, these symmetries can be obtained by orienting sums of non-oriented graphs $γ$ on $n$ vertices and $2n-2$ edges. The bi-vector flow $\dot{\mathcal{P}} = \text{Or}(γ)(\mathcal{P})$ preserves the space of Poisson structures if $γ$ is a cocycle with respect to the vertex-expanding differential in the graph complex. A class of such cocycles $\boldsymbolγ_{2\ell+1}$ is known to exist: marked by $\ell \in \mathbb{N}$, each of them contains a $(2\ell+1)$-gon wheel with a nonzero coefficient. At $\ell=1$ the tetrahedron $\boldsymbolγ_3$ itself is a cocycle; at $\ell=2$ the Kontsevich--Willwacher pentagon-wheel cocycle $\boldsymbolγ_5$ consists of two graphs. We reconstruct the symmetry $\mathcal{Q}_5(\mathcal{P}) = \text{Or}(\boldsymbolγ_5)(\mathcal{P})$ and verify that $\mathcal{Q}_5$ is a Poisson cocycle indeed: $[\![\mathcal{P},\mathcal{Q}_5(\mathcal{P})]\!]\doteq 0$ via $[\![\mathcal{P},\mathcal{P}]\!]=0$.

The deformation quantization mapping of Poisson- to associative structures in field theory

Let $\{{\cdot},{\cdot}\}_{\boldsymbol{\mathcal{P}}}$ be a variational Poisson bracket in a field model on an affine bundle $π$ over an affine base manifold $M^m$. Denote by $\times$ the commutative associative multiplication in the Poisson algebra $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{A}}$ of local functionals $Γ(π)\to\Bbbk$ that take field configurations to numbers. By applying the techniques from geometry of iterated variations, we make well defined the deformation quantization map ${\times}\mapsto{\star}={\times}+\hbar\,\{{\cdot},{\cdot}\}_{\boldsymbol{\mathcal{P}}}+\bar{o}(\hbar)$ that produces a noncommutative $\Bbbk[[\hbar]]$-linear star-product $\star$ in $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{A}}$.

The Kontsevich tetrahedral flow revisited

We prove that the Kontsevich tetrahedral flow $\dot{\mathcal{P}} = \mathcal{Q}_{a:b} (\mathcal{P})$, the right-hand side of which is a linear combination of two differential monomials of degree four in a bi-vector $\mathcal{P}$ on an affine real Poisson manifold $N^n$, does infinitesimally preserve the space of Poisson bi-vectors on $N^n$ if and only if the two monomials in $\mathcal{Q}_{a:b} (\mathcal{P})$ are balanced by the ratio $a:b=1:6$. The proof is explicit; it is written in the language of Kontsevich graphs.

Do the Kontsevich tetrahedral flows preserve or destroy the space of Poisson bi-vectors?

From the paper "Formality Conjecture" (Ascona 1996): "I am aware of only one such a class, it corresponds to simplest good graph, the complete graph with $4$ vertices $($and $6$ edges$)$. This class gives a remarkable vector field on the space of bi-vector fields on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The evolution with respect to the time $t$ is described by the following non-linear partial differential equation: ..., where $α=\sum_{i,j}α_{ij} {\partial}/{\partial x_{i}}\wedge {\partial}/{\partial x_{j}}$ is a bi-vector field on $\mathbb{R}^d$. It follows from general properties of cohomology that $1)$ this evolution preserves the class of $($real-analytic$)$ Poisson structures}, ... In fact, I cheated a little bit. In the formula for the vector field on the space of bivector fields which one get from the tetrahedron graph, an additional term is present. ... It is possible to prove formally that if $α$ is a Poisson bracket, i.e. if $[{α,α}]=0\in T^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, then the additional term shown above vanishes." By using twelve Poisson structures with high-degree polynomial coefficients as explicit counterexamples, we show that both the above claims are false: neither does the first flow preserve the property of bi-vectors to be Poisson nor does the second flow vanish identically at Poisson bi-vectors. The counterexamples at hand suggest a correction to the formula for the "exotic" flow on the space of Poisson bi-vectors; in fact, this flow is encoded by the balanced sum involving both the Kontsevich tetrahedral graphs (that give rise to the flows mentioned above). We reveal that it is only the balance $1:6$ for which the flow does preserve the space of Poisson bi-vectors.

On the Kontsevich $\star$-product associativity mechanism

The deformation quantization by Kontsevich [arXiv:q-alg/9709040] is a way to construct an associative noncommutative star-product $\star=\times+\hbar \{\ ,\ \}_{P}+\bar{o}(\hbar)$ in the algebra of formal power series in $\hbar$ on a given finite-dimensional affine Poisson manifold: here $\times$ is the usual multiplication, $\{\ ,\ \}_{P}\neq0$ is the Poisson bracket, and $\hbar$ is the deformation parameter. The product $\star$ is assembled at all powers $\hbar^{k\geq0}$ via summation over a certain set of weighted graphs with $k+2$ vertices; for each $k>0$, every such graph connects the two co-multiples of $\star$ using $k$ copies of $\{\ ,\ \}_{P}$. Cattaneo and Felder [ arXiv:math/9902090 [math.QA] ] interpreted these topological portraits as the genuine Feynman diagrams in the Ikeda-Izawa model [arXiv:hep-th/9312059] for quantum gravity. By expanding the star-product up to $\bar{o}(\hbar^3)$, i.e., with respect to graphs with at most five vertices but possibly containing loops, we illustrate the mechanism Assoc = Operator(Poisson) that converts the Jacobi identity for the bracket $\{\ ,\ \}_{P}$ into the associativity of $\star$. The right-hand side of the Jacobi identity: to be naught or not to be?

The geometric approach [1312.1262] to iterated variations of local functionals -- e.g., of the (master-)action functional -- resulted in an extension of the deformation quantisation technique to the set-up of Poisson models of field theory [IHES/M/15/13]. It also allowed of a rigorous proof ([1312.1262],[1210.0726]) for the main inter-relations between the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) Laplacian $Δ$ and variational Schouten bracket. The ad hoc use of these relations had been a known analytic difficulty in the BV-formalism for quantisation of gauge systems; now achieved, the proof does actually not require the assumption of graded-commutativity [1210.0726]. Explained in our previous work, geometry's self-regularisation is rendered by Gel'fand's calculus of singular linear integral operators supported on the diagonal. We now illustrate that analytic technique by inspecting the validity mechanism [1312.4140] for the graded Jacobi identity which the variational Schouten bracket does satisfy (whence $Δ^2=0$, i.e., the BV-Laplacian is a differential acting in the algebra of local functionals). By using one tuple of three variational multi-vectors twice, we contrast the new logic of iterated variations -- when the right-hand side of Jacobi's identity vanishes altogether -- with the old method: interlacing its steps and stops, it could produce some non-zero representative of the trivial class in the top-degree horizontal cohomology. But we then show at once by an elementary counterexample why, in the frames of the old approach that did not rely on Gel'fand's calculus, the BV-Laplacian failed to be a graded derivation of the variational Schouten bracket. Gardner's deformation of the Krasil'shchik-Kersten system

The classical problem of construction of Gardner's deformations for infinite-dimensional completely integrable systems of evolutionary partial differential equations (PDE) amounts essentially to finding the recurrence relations between the integrals of motion. Using the correspondence between the zero-curvature representations and Gardner deformations for PDE, we construct a Gardner's deformation for the Krasil'shchik-Kersten system. For this, we introduce the new nonlocal variables in such a way that the rules to differentiate them are consistent by virtue of the equations at hand and second, the full system of Krasil'shchik-Kersten's equations and the new rules contains the Korteweg-de Vries equation and classical Gardner's deformation for it. Towards an axiomatic model of fundamental interactions at Planck scale

By exploring possible physical sense of notions, structures, and logic in a class of noncommutative geometries, we try to unify the four fundamental interactions within an axiomatic quantum picture. We identify the objects and algebraic operations which could properly encode the formation and structure of sub-atomic particles, antimatter, annihilation, CP-symmetry violation, mass endowment mechanism, three lepton-neutrino matchings, spin, helicity and chirality, electric charge and electromagnetism, as well as the weak and strong interaction between particles, admissible transition mechanisms (e.g., muon to muon neutrino, electron, and electron antineutrino), and decays (e.g., neutron to proton, electron, and electron antineutrino).

Gardner's deformations as generators of new integrable systems

We re-address the problem of construction of new infinite-dimensional completely integrable systems on the basis of known ones, and we reveal a working mechanism for such transitions. By splitting the problem's solution in two steps, we explain how the classical technique of Gardner's deformations facilitates -- in a regular way -- making the first, nontrivial move, in the course of which the drafts of new systems are created (often, of hydrodynamic type). The other step then amounts to higher differential order extensions of symbols in the intermediate hierarchies (e.g., by using the techniques of Dubrovin et al. [1,2] and Ferapontov et al. [3,4]).

The Jacobi identity for graded-commutative variational Schouten bracket revisited

This short note contains an explicit proof of the Jacobi identity for variational Schouten bracket in $Z_2$-graded commutative setup. For the reasoning to be rigorous, it refers to the product bundle geometry of iterated variations (see arXiv:1312.1262 [math-ph]); no ad hoc regularizations occur anywhere in this theory.

The geometry of variations in Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism

This is a paper about geometry of (iterated) variations. We explain why no sources of divergence are built into the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) Laplacian, whence there is no need to postulate any ad hoc conventions such as "$δ(0)=0$" and "$\logδ(0)=0$" within BV-approach to quantisation of gauge systems. Remarkably, the geometry of iterated variations does not refer at all to the construction of Dirac's $δ$-function as a limit of smooth kernels. We illustrate the reasoning by re-deriving - but not just "formally postulating" - the standard properties of BV-Laplacian and Schouten bracket and by verifying their basic inter-relations (e.g., cohomology preservation by gauge symmetries of the quantum master-equation).
