An affirmative answer to a problem of Cater

Does there exist an increasing absolutely continuous function, $f: [0,1] \rightarrow \mathbb R$ such that $\{x: f'(x)=0\}$ is both countable and dense? This problem was proposed by F.S. Cater about two decades ago. We give an affirmative answer to the problem.

Radial limits and boundary uniqueness

The paper sheds a new light on the fundamental theorems of complex analysis due to P. Fatou, F. and M. Riesz, N. N. Lusin, I. I. Privalov, and A. Beurling. Only classical tools available at the times of Fatou are used. The proofs are very simple and in some cases - almost trivial.

Rubel's problem on bounded analytic functions

The paper shows that for any $G_δ$ set $F$ of Lebesgue measure zero on the unit circle $T$ there exists a function $f \in H^{\infty}$ such that the radial limits of $f$ exist at each point of $T$ and vanish precisely on $F$. This solves a problem proposed by Lee Rubel in 1973.

Weak-star convergence and a polynomial approximation problem

Let $E$ be an arbitrary subset of the unit circle $T$ and let $f$ be a function defined on $E$. When there exist polynomials $P_n$ which are uniformly bounded by a number $M > 0$ on $T$ and converge (pointwise) to $f$ at each point of $E$? We give a necessary and sufficient description of such functions $f$. The necessity part of our result, in fact, is a classical theorem of S.Ya. Khavinson, while the proof of sufficiency uses the method that has been recently applied in particular in the author's solution of an approximation problem proposed by L. Zalcman.

On the zero-free polynomial approximation problem

Let $E$ be a compact set in $\mathbb C$ with connected complement, and let $A(E)$ be the class of all complex continuous function on $E$ that are analytic in the interior $E^0$ of $E$. Let $f \in A(E)$ be zero free on $E^0$. By Mergelyan's theorem $f$ can be uniformly approximated on $E$ by polynomials, but is it possible to realize such approximation by polynomials that are zero-free on $E$? This natural question has been proposed by J. Andersson and P. Gauthier. So far it has been settled for some particular sets $E$. The present paper describes classes of functions for which zero free approximation is possible on an arbitrary $E$.
