Inflationary Correlation Functions without Infrared Divergences

Inflationary correlation functions are potentially affected by infrared divergences. For example, the two-point correlator of curvature perturbation at momentum k receives corrections ~ln(kL), where L is the size of the region in which the measurement is performed. We define infrared-safe correlation functions which have no sensitivity to the size L of the box used for the observation. The conventional correlators with their familiar log-enhanced corrections (both from scalar and tensor long-wavelength modes) are easily recovered from our IR-safe correlation functions. Among other examples, we illustrate this by calculating the corrections to the non-Gaussianity parameter f_NL coming from long-wavelength tensor modes. In our approach, the IR corrections automatically emerge in a resummed, all-orders form. For the scalar corrections, the resulting all-orders expression can be evaluated explicitly.

Inflationary Infrared Divergences: Geometry of the Reheating Surface vs. delta N Formalism

We describe a simple way of incorporating fluctuations of the Hubble scale during the horizon exit of scalar perturbations into the delta N formalism. The dominant effect comes from the dependence of the Hubble scale on low-frequency modes of the inflaton. This modifies the coefficient of the log-enhanced term appearing in the curvature spectrum at second order in field fluctuations. With this modification, the relevant coefficient turns out to be proportional to the second derivative of the tree-level spectrum with respect to the inflaton phi at horizon exit. A logarithm with precisely the same coefficient appears in a calculation of the log-enhancement of the curvature spectrum based purely on the geometry of the reheating surface. We take this agreement as strong support for the proposed implementation of the delta N formalism. Moreover, our analysis makes it apparent that the log-enhancement of the inflationary power-spectrum is indeed physical if this quantity is defined using a global coordinate system on the reheating surface (or any other post-inflationary surface of constant energy density). However, it can be avoided by defining the spectrum using invariant distances on this surface.

Tachyons in Throat Cosmology

Tachyonic 5d scalars are generically present in Randall-Sundrum-like models. In particular, they are known to be part of the 5d effective description of the Klebanov-Strassler throat. When moving from the IR to the UV region, the 5d bulk profile of Kaluza-Klein excitations of tachyons decays more slowly than that of massless scalars or the graviton. As a result, tachyons in many cases dominate the coupling between IR- and UV-localized sectors, leading to a very significant enhancement of energy-transfer or decay rates from the IR to the UV. This can dramatically affect the reheating of the Standard Model after brane inflation and the decay of throat dark matter.

D7-Brane Moduli vs. F-Theory Cycles in Elliptically Fibred Threefolds

We study the space of geometric and open string moduli of type IIB compactifications from the perspective of complex structure deformations of F-theory. In order to find a correspondence, we work in the weak coupling limit and for simplicity focus on compactifications to 6 dimensions. Starting from the topology of D7-branes and O7-planes, we construct the 3-cycles of the F-theory threefold. We achieve complete agreement between the degrees of freedom of the Weierstrass model and the complex structure deformations of the elliptic Calabi-Yau. All relevant quantities are expressed in terms of the topology of the base space, allowing us to formulate our results for general base spaces.

Phenomenology of Supersymmetric Gauge-Higgs Unification

Supersymmetric Gauge-Higgs Unification is a well-motivated new physics scenario, both in heterotic model building and from the perspective of higher-dimensional Grand Unified Theories. When combined with radion mediated supersymmetry breaking, it allows for very specific predictions concerning the high-scale parameters of the MSSM. Using an appropriately modified version of a standard RGE evolution code (SuSpect), we derive low-scale predictions which can be tested at the LHC. The phenomenological success of our setting depends crucially on the 5d Chern-Simons term, which has not been used in previous, less encouraging studies of gauge-Higgs unification in supersymmetry.

A Realistic Unified Gauge Coupling from the Micro-Landscape of Orbifold GUTs

We consider 5-dimensional supersymmetric field theories where supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism (or, equivalently, by the F-term VEV of the radion). In such models, the radion effective potential is calculable in terms of the 5d gauge coupling, the UV cutoff of the 5d field theory, and the field content. We provide simple, explicit formulae for the leading part of the two-loop effective potential. Our analysis applies in particular to 5d orbifold GUTs motivated by heterotic orbifold models. We focus on potentially realistic models of this type and make the additional assumption that the UV cutoff scale is identical with the strong-coupling scale of the 5d gauge theory. Given our stabilization mechanism, the 5d radius is now fixed in terms of the 5d gauge coupling and the field content of the model. This implies a prediction for the effective 4d gauge coupling only in terms of the field content of the model. Given the `micro-landscape' provided by the different possible distributions of Standard Model fields between bulk and branes, we find a subset of models with a realistic unified gauge coupling. We also discuss two possibilities for the `uplifting' of our SUSY-breaking AdS vacua: One is based on the possible presence of a weak warping, the other appeals to F-terms in an extra brane-localized SUSY-breaking sector.

Weierstrass meets Enriques

We study in detail the degeneration of K3 to T^4/Z_2. We obtain an explicit embedding of the lattice of collapsed cycles of T^4/Z_2 into the lattice of integral cycles of K3 in two different ways. Our first method exploits the duality to the heterotic string on T^3. This allows us to describe the degeneration in terms of Wilson lines. Our second method is based on the blow-up of T^4/Z_2. From this blow-up, we directly construct the full lattice of integral cycles of K3. Finally, we use our results to describe the action of the Enriques involution on elliptic K3 surfaces, finding that a Weierstrass model description is consistent with the Enriques involution only in the F-theory limit.

Inducing the mu and the B mu Term by the Radion and the 5d Chern-Simons Term

In 5-dimensional models with gauge-Higgs unification, the F-term vacuum expectation value of the radion provides, in close analogy to the Giudice-Masiero mechanism, a natural source for the mu and B mu term. Both the leading order gauge theory lagrangian and the supersymmetric Chern-Simons term contain couplings to the radion superfield which can be used for this purpose. We analyse the basic features of this mechanism for mu term generation and provide an explicit example, based on a variation of the SU(6) gauge-Higgs unification model of Burdman and Nomura. This construction contains all the relevant features used in our generic analysis. More generally, we expect our mechanism to be relevant to many of the recently discussed orbifold GUT models derived from heterotic string theory. This provides an interesting way of testing high-scale physics via Higgs mass patterns accessible at the LHC.

Fixing D7 Brane Positions by F-Theory Fluxes

To do realistic model building in type IIB supergravity, it is important to understand how to fix D7-brane positions by the choice of fluxes. More generally, F-theory model building requires the understanding of how fluxes determine the singularity structure (and hence gauge group and matter content) of the compactification. We analyse this problem in the simple setting of M-theory on K3xK3. Given a certain flux which is consistent with the F-theory limit, we can explicitly derive the positions at which D7 branes or stacks of D7 branes are stabilised. The analysis is based on a parameterization of the moduli space of type IIB string theory on T^2/Z_2 (including D7-brane positions) in terms of the periods of integral cycles of M-theory on K3. This allows us, in particular, to select a specific desired gauge group by the choice of flux numbers.

Kaehler Corrections for the Volume Modulus of Flux Compactifications

No-scale models arise in many compactifications of string theory and supergravity, the most prominent recent example being type IIB flux compactifications. Focussing on the case where the no-scale field is a single unstabilized volume modulus (radion), we analyse the general form of supergravity loop corrections that affect the no-scale structure of the Kaehler potential. These corrections contribute to the 4d scalar potential of the radion in a way that is similar to the Casimir effect. We discuss the interplay of this loop effect with string-theoretic alpha' corrections and its possible role in the stabilization of the radion.

The Throat as a Randall-Sundrum Model with Goldberger-Wise Stabilization

An interesting feature of type IIB flux compactifications is the natural presence of strongly warped regions or `throats'. These regions allow for a 5d Randall-Sundrum model interpretation with a large hierarchy between the UV and IR brane. We show that, in the 5d description, the flux stabilization of this hierarchy (or, equivalently, of the brane-to-brane distance) can be understood as an implementation of the Goldberger-Wise mechanism. This mechanism relies on the non-trivial bulk profile of the so-called Goldberger-Wise scalar, which in addition has fixed expectation values at the boundaries and thereby stabilizes the size of the 5d interval. The Goldberger-Wise scalar is realized microscopically by the continuously varying flux of the Neveu-Schwarz 2-form potential B_2 on the S^2 cycle in the throat. Its back-reaction on the 5d geometry leads to a significant departure from a pure AdS_5 background. We also find that, for a wide range of parameters, the universal Kaehler modulus of the 10d compactification plays the role of a UV-brane field in the equivalent 5d model. It governs the size of a large 4d curvature term localized at the UV brane. We hope that our simple 5d description of the stabilized throat will be useful in various phenomenological and cosmological applications and that refined versions of this construction will be able to account for all relevant details of the 10d model.

Radius Stabilization by Two-Loop Casimir Energy

It is well known that the Casimir energy of bulk fields induces a non-trivial potential for the compactification radius of higher-dimensional field theories. On dimensional grounds, the 1-loop potential is ~ 1/R^4. Since the 5d gauge coupling constant g^2 has the dimension of length, the two-loop correction is ~ g^2/R^5. The interplay of these two terms leads, under very general circumstances (including other interacting theories and more compact dimensions), to a stabilization at finite radius. Perturbative control or, equivalently, a parametrically large compact radius is ensured if the 1-loop coefficient is small because of an approximate fermion-boson cancellation. This is similar to the perturbativity argument underlying the Banks-Zaks fixed point proposal. Our analysis includes a scalar toy model, 5d Yang-Mills theory with charged matter, the examination of S^1 and S^1/Z_2 geometries, as well as a brief discussion of the supersymmetric case with Scherk-Schwarz SUSY breaking. 2-Loop calculability in the S^1/Z_2 case relies on the log-enhancement of boundary kinetic terms at the 1-loop level.

Group-Theoretical Aspects of Orbifold and Conifold GUTs

Motivated by the simplicity and direct phenomenological applicability of field-theoretic orbifold constructions in the context of grand unification, we set out to survey the immensely rich group-theoretical possibilities open to this type of model building. In particular, we show how every maximal-rank, regular subgroup of a simple Lie group can be obtained by orbifolding and determine under which conditions rank reduction is possible. We investigate how standard model matter can arise from the higher-dimensional SUSY gauge multiplet. New model building options arise if, giving up the global orbifold construction, generic conical singularities and generic gauge twists associated with these singularities are considered. Viewed from the purely field-theoretic perspective, such models, which one might call conifold GUTs, require only a very mild relaxation of the constraints of orbifold model building. Our most interesting concrete examples include the breaking of E_7 to SU(5) and of E_8 to SU(4)xSU(2)xSU(2) (with extra factor groups), where three generations of standard model matter come from the gauge sector and the families are interrelated either by SU(3) R-symmetry or by an SU(3) flavour subgroup of the original gauge group.

The Flavour Hierarchy and See-Saw Neutrinos from Bulk Masses in 5d Orbifold GUTs

In supersymmetric grand unified theories (GUTs) based on S^1/(Z_2 x Z'_2) orbifold constructions in 5 dimensions, Standard Model (SM) matter and Higgs fields can be realized in terms of 5d hypermultiplets. These hypermultiplets can naturally have large bulk masses, leading to a localization of the zero modes at one of the two branes or to an exponential suppression of the mass of the lowest-lying non-zero mode. We demonstrate that these dynamical features allow for the construction of an elegant 3-generation SU(5) model in 5 dimensions that explains all the hierarchies between fermion masses and CKM matrix elements in geometrical terms. Moreover, if U(1)_χ(where SU(5) x U(1)_χ\subset SO(10)) is gauged in the bulk, but broken by the orbifold action at the SM brane, the right-handed neutrino mass scale is naturally suppressed relative to M_GUT. Together with our construction in the charged fermion sector this leads, via the usual see-saw mechanism, to a realistic light neutrino mass scale and large neutrino mixing angles.

Proton Decay Signatures of Orbifold GUTs

In grand unified theories based on orbifold constructions in higher dimensions, Higgsino-mediated proton decay is absent. However, proton decay mediated by $X$ and $Y$ gauge bosons is typically enhanced to levels detectable by current and future experiments. We analyse the phenomenology of proton decay induced by the minimal coupling of $X,Y$ gauge bosons. In particular, we show that the novel realization of matter in orbifold GUTs can lead to unusual final state flavour structure, for example, the dominance of the $p\to K^0μ^+$ mode. Furthermore, we discuss proton decay induced by higher-derivative brane operators, finding potentially observable rates for natural values of the operator coefficients.

The Structure of GUT Breaking by Orbifolding

Recently, an attractive model of GUT breaking has been proposed in which a 5 dimensional supersymmetric SU(5) gauge theory on an S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2') orbifold is broken down to the 4d MSSM by SU(5)-violating boundary conditions. Motivated by this construction and several related realistic models, we investigate the general structure of orbifolds in the effective field theory context, and of this orbifold symmetry breaking mechanism in particular. An analysis of the group theoretic structure of orbifold breaking is performed. This depends upon the existence of appropriate inner and outer automorphisms of the Lie algebra, and we show that a reduction of the rank of the GUT group is possible. Some aspects of larger GUT theories based on SO(10) and E_6 are discussed. We explore the possibilities of defining the theory directly on a space with boundaries and breaking the gauge symmetry by more general consistently chosen boundary conditions for the fields. Furthermore, we derive the relation of orbifold breaking with the familiar mechanism of Wilson line breaking, finding a one-to-one correspondence, both conceptually and technically. Finally, we analyse the consistency of orbifold models in the effective field theory context, emphasizing the necessity for self-adjoint extensions of the Hamiltonian and other conserved operators, and especially the highly restrictive anomaly cancellation conditions that apply if the bulk theory lives in more than 5 dimensions.

Finite Temperature Effective Potential for the Abelian Higgs Model to the Order $e^4,λ^2$

A complete calculation of the finite temperature effective potential for the abelian Higgs model to the order $e^4,λ^2$ is presented and the result is expressed in terms of physical parameters defined at zero temperature. The absence of a linear term is verified explicitly to the given order and proven to survive to all orders. The first order phase transition has weakened in comparison with lower order calculation, which shows up in a considerable decrease of the surface tension. The only difference from the original version is the splitting of some overlong lines causing problems with certain mailers.
