Pure Point Spectrum is Generic

We consider Schrödinger operators in $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ with real-valued potentials in $\ell^\infty(\mathbb{Z})$ and show that the generic spectral type is pure point. More specifically, we show that for a generic bounded potential, the essential spectrum of the associated Schrödinger operator is a Cantor set and has zero weight with respect to all spectral measures.

Typical Weak Mixing and Exceptional Spectral Properties for Interval Translation Mappings

We investigate weak mixing for some classes of interval translation mappings. We give two distinct proofs that a typical Bruin-Troubetzkoy interval translation mapping is weakly mixing. Moreover, we show that the second approach extends to other classes of interval translation mappings. In particular, we show that Bruin interval translation mappings on any number of intervals are typically weak mixing. Finally, we construct the first examples of non weak mixing Bruin-Troubetzkoy ITM of infinite type.

Dense Phenomena for Ergodic Schrödinger Operators: I. Spectrum, Integrated Density of States, and Lyapunov Exponent

We consider Schrödinger operators in $\ell^2(\Z)$ whose potentials are defined via continuous sampling along the orbits of a homeomorphism on a compact metric space. We show that for each non-atomic ergodic measure $μ$, there is a dense set of sampling functions such that the associated almost sure spectrum has finitely many gaps, the integrated density of states is smooth, and the Lyapunov exponent is smooth and positive. As a byproduct we answer a question of Walters about the existence of non-uniform $\SL(2,\R)$ cocycles in the affirmative.

Minimality of Strong Foliations of Anosov and Partially Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms

We study the topological properties of expanding invariant foliations of $C^{1+}$ diffeomorphisms, in the context of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and laminations with $1$-dimensional center bundle. In this first version of the paper, we introduce a property we call *s-transversality* of a partially hyperbolic lamination with $1$-dimensional center bundle, which is robust under $C^1$ perturbations. We prove that under a weak expanding condition on the center bundle (called *some hyperbolicity*, or "SH"), any s-transverse partially hyperbolic lamination contains a disk tangent to the center-unstable direction (Theorem C). We obtain several corollaries, among them: if $f$ is a $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic Anosov diffeomorphism with $1$-dimensional expanding center, and the (strong) unstable foliation $W^{uu}$ of $f$ is minimal, then $W^{uu}$ is robustly minimal under $C^1$-small perturbations, provided that the stable and strong unstable bundles are not jointly integrable (Theorem B). Theorem B has applications in our upcoming work with Eskin, Potrie and Zhang, in which we prove that on ${\mathbb T}^3$, any $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic Anosov diffeomorphism with $1$-dimensional expanding center has a minimal strong unstable foliation, and has a unique $uu$-Gibbs measure provided that the stable and strong unstable bundles are not jointly integrable. In a future work, we address the density (in any $C^r$ topology) of minimality of strong unstable foliations for $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with $1$-dimensional center and the SH property.

Schrödinger Operators with Potentials Generated by Hyperbolic Transformations: II. Large Deviations and Anderson Localization

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators whose potentials are generated by Hölder continuous sampling along the orbits of a uniformly hyperbolic transformation. For any ergodic measure satisfying a suitable bounded distortion property, we establish a uniform large deviation estimate in a large energy region provided that the sampling function is locally constant or has small supremum norm. We also prove full spectral Anderson localization for the operators in question.

KAM, Lyapunov exponents, and the Spectral Dichotomy for typical one-frequency Schrodinger operators

We show that a one-frequency analytic SL(2,R) cocycle with Diophantine rotation vector is analytically linearizable if and only if the Lyapunov exponent is zero through a complex neighborhood of the circle. More generally, we show (without any arithmetic assumptions) that regularity implies almost reducibility, i.e., the range of validity of the perturbative analysis near constants is specified by a condition on the Lyapunov exponents. Together with our previous work, this establishes a Spectral Dichotomy for typical one-frequency Schrodinger operators: they can be written as a direct sum of large-like and small-like operators. In particular, the typical operator has no singular continuous spectrum.

Continuity of the Lyapunov exponents of random matrix products

We prove that the Lyapunov exponents of random products in a (real or complex) matrix group depends continuously on the matrix coefficients and probability weights. More generally, the Lyapunov exponents of the random product defined by any compactly supported probability distribution on $GL(d)$ vary continuously with the distribution, in a natural topology corresponding to weak$^*$-closeness of the distributions and Hausdorff-closeness of their supports.

On the abominable properties of the almost Mathieu operator with well approximated frequencies

We show that some spectral properties of the almost Mathieu operator with frequency well approximated by rationals can be as poor as at all possible in the class of all one-dimensional discrete Schroedinger operators. For the class of critical coupling, we show that the Hausdorff measure of the spectrum may vanish (for appropriately chosen frequencies) whenever the gauge function tends to zero faster than logarithmically. For arbitrary coupling, we show that modulus of continuity of the integrated density of states can be arbitrary close to logarithmic; we also prove a similar result for the Lyapunov exponent as a function of the spectral parameter. Finally, we show that (for any coupling) there exist frequencies for which the spectrum is not homogeneous in the sense of Carleson, and, moreover, fails the Parreau-Widom condition. The frequencies for which these properties hold are explicitly described in terms of the growth of the denominators of the convergents.

The Spectrum of Schrödinger Operators with Randomly Perturbed Ergodic Potentials

We consider Schrödinger operators in $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ whose potentials are given by the sum of an ergodic term and a random term of Anderson type. Under the assumption that the ergodic term is generated by a homeomorphism of a connected compact metric space and a continuous sampling function, we show that the almost sure spectrum arises in an explicitly described way from the unperturbed spectrum and the topological support of the single-site distribution. In particular, assuming that the latter is compact and contains at least two points, this explicit description of the almost sure spectrum shows that it will always be given by a finite union of non-degenerate compact intervals. The result can be viewed as a far reaching generalization of the well known formula for the spectrum of the classical Anderson model.

Statistical properties of quadratic polynomials with a neutral fixed point

We describe the statistical properties of the dynamics of the quadratic polynomials P_a(z):=e^{2πa i} z+z^2 on the complex plane, with a of high return times. In particular, we show that these maps are uniquely ergodic on their measure theoretic attractors, and the unique invariant probability is a physical measure describing the statistical behavior of typical orbits in the Julia set. This confirms a conjecture of Perez-Marco on the unique ergodicity of hedgehog dynamics, in this class of maps.

Quantitative weak mixing for interval exchange transformations

We establish a dichotomy for the rate of the decay of the Cesàro averages of correlations of sufficiently regular functions for typical interval exchange transformations (IET) which are not rigid rotations (for which weak mixing had been previously established in the works of Katok-Stepin, Veech, and Avila-Forni). We show that the rate of decay is either logarithmic or polynomial, according to whether the IET is of rotation class (i.e., it can be obtained as the induced map of a rigid rotation) or not. In the latter case, we also establish that the spectral measures of Lipschitz functions have local dimension bounded away from zero (by a constant depending only on the number of intervals). In our approach, upper bounds are obtained through estimates of twisted Birkhoff sums of Lipschitz functions, while the logarithmic lower bounds are based on the slow deviation of ergodic averages that govern the relation between rigid rotations and their induced maps.

Mixing for Smooth Time-Changes of General Nilflows

We consider completely irrational nilflows on any nilmanifold of step at least $2$. We show that there exists a dense set of smooth time-changes such that any time-change in this class which is not measurably trivial gives rise to a mixing nilflow. This in particular reproves and generalizes to any nilflow (of step at least $2$) the main result proved in [AFU] for the special class of Heisenberg (step $2$) nilflows, and later generalized in [Rav2] to a class of nilflows of arbitrary step which are isomorphic to suspensions of higher-dimensional linear toral skew-shifts.

Schrödinger Operators With Potentials Generated by Hyperbolic Transformations: I. Positivity of the Lyapunov Exponent

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators whose potentials are generated by sampling along the orbits of a general hyperbolic transformation. Specifically, we show that if the sampling function is a non-constant Hölder continuous function defined on a subshift of finite type with an ergodic measure admitting a local product structure and a fixed point, then the Lyapunov exponent is positive away from a discrete set of energies. Moreover, for sampling functions in a residual subset of the space of Hölder continuous functions, the Lyapunov exponent is positive everywhere. If we consider locally constant or globally fiber bunched sampling functions, then the Lyapuonv exponent is positive away from a finite set. Moreover, for sampling functions in an open and dense subset of the space in question, the Lyapunov exponent is uniformly positive. Our results can be applied to any subshift of finite type with ergodic measures that are equilibrium states of Hölder continuous potentials. In particular, we apply our results to Schrödinger operators defined over expanding maps on the unit circle, hyperbolic automorphisms of a finite-dimensional torus, and Markov chains.

Analytic maps of parabolic and elliptic type with trivial centralisers

We prove that for a dense set of irrational numbers $α$, the analytic centraliser of the map $e^{2πi α} z+ z^2$ near $0$ is trivial. We also prove that some analytic circle diffeomorphisms in the Arnold family, with irrational rotation numbers, have trivial centralisers. These provide the first examples of such maps with trivial centralisers.

Invariant graphs and spectral type of Schrödinger operators

In this paper we study spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with quasi-periodic potentials related to quasi-periodic action minimizing trajectories for analytic twist maps. We prove that the spectrum contains a component of absolutely continuous spectrum provided that the corresponding trajectory of the twist map belongs to an analytic invariant curve.

Smooth Siegel disks everywhere

We prove the existence of Siegel disks with smooth boundaries in most families of holomorphic maps fixing the origin. The method can also yield other types of regularity conditions for the boundary. The family is required to have an indifferent fixed point at $0$, to be parameterized by the rotation number $α$, to depend on $α$ in a Lipschitz-continuous way, and to be non-degenerate. A degenerate family is one for which the set of non-linearizable maps is not dense. We give a characterization of degenerate families, which proves that they are quite exceptional.
