Combinatorial rigidity for unicritical polynomials

We prove that any unicritical polynomial $f_c:z\mapsto z^d+c$ which is at most finitely renormalizable and has only repelling periodic points is combinatorially rigid. It implies that the connectedness locus (the ``Multibrot set'') is locally connected at the corresponding parameter values. It generalizes Yoccoz's Theorem for quadratics to the higher degree case.

The Ten Martini Problem

We prove the conjecture (known as the ``Ten Martini Problem'' after Kac and Simon) that the spectrum of the almost Mathieu operator is a Cantor set for all non-zero values of the coupling and all irrational frequencies.

Smoothness of solenoidal attractors

We consider dynamical systems generated by skew products of affine contractions on the real line over angle-multiplying maps on the circle $S^1$: $ T:S^{1}\times \R\to S^1\times \R, T(x,y)=(\ell x, λy+f(x)) $ where $\ell\geq 2$, $0<λ<1$ and $f$ is a $C^r$ function on $S^1$. We show that, if $λ^{1+2s}\ell>1$ for some $0\leq s< r-2$, the density of the SBR measure for $T$ is contained in the Sobolev space $W^s(S^1\times \R)$ for almost all ($C^r$ generic, at least) $f$.

Generic singular continuous spectrum for ergodic Schrödinger operators

We consider Schrödinger operators with ergodic potential $V_ω(n)=f(T^n(ω))$, $n \in \Z$, $ω\in Ω$, where $T:Ω\to Ω$ is a non-periodic homeomorphism. We show that for generic $f \in C(Ω)$, the spectrum has no absolutely continuous component. The proof is based on approximation by discontinuous potentials which can be treated via Kotani Theory.

Hausdorff dimension and conformal measures of Feigenbaum Julia sets

We show that contrary to anticipation suggested by the dictionary between rational maps and Kleinian groups and by the ``hairiness phenomenon'', there exist many Feigenbaum Julia sets $J(f)$ whose Hausdorff dimension is strictly smaller than two. We also prove that for any Feigenbaum Julia set, the Poincaré critical exponent $\de_\crit$ is equal to the hyperbolic dimension $\HD_\hyp(J(f))$. Moreover, if $\area J(f)=0$ then $\HD_\hyp (J(f))=\HD(J(f))$. In the stationary case, the last statement can be reversed: if $\area J(f)> 0$ then $\HD_\hyp (J(f))< 2$. We also give a new construction of conformal measures on $J(f)$ that implies that they exist for any $\de\in [\de_\crit, \infty)$, and analyze their scaling and dissipativity/conservativity properties.

Examples of Feigenbaum Julia sets with small Hausdorff dimension

We give examples of infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials $F_c: z\maps to z^2+c$ with stationary combinatorics whose Julia sets have Hausdorff dimension arbitrar y close to 1. The combinatorics of the renormalization involved is close to the Chebyshev one . The argument is based upon a new tool, a ``Recursive Quadratic Estimate'' for the Poincaré series of an infinitely re normalizable map.

Convergence of an exact quantization scheme

It has been shown by Voros \cite {V} that the spectrum of the one-dimensional homogeneous anharmonic oscillator (Schrödinger operator with potential $q^{2M}$, $M>1$) is a fixed point of an explicit non-linear transformation. We show that this fixed point is globally and exponentially attractive in spaces of properly normalized sequences.

Statistical properties of unimodal maps: the quadratic family

We prove that almost every non-regular real quadratic map is Collet-Eckmann and has polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit (proving a conjecture by Sinai). It follows that typical quadratic maps have excellent ergodic properties, as exponential decay of correlations (Keller and Nowicki, Young) and stochastic stability in the strong sense (Baladi and Viana). This is an important step to get the same results for more general families of unimodal maps.

Statistical properties of unimodal maps: smooth families with negative Schwarzian derivative

We prove that there is a residual set of families of smooth or analytic unimodal maps with quadratic critical point and negative Schwarzian derivative such that almost every non-regular parameter is Collet-Eckmann with subexponential recurrence of the critical orbit. Those conditions lead to a detailed and robust statistical description of the dynamics. This proves the Palis conjecture in this setting.

Statistical properties of unimodal maps: physical measures, periodic orbits and pathological laminations

In this work, we relate the geometry of chaotic attractors of typical analytic unimodal maps to the behavior of the critical orbit. Our main result is an explicit formula relating the combinatorics of the critical orbit with the exponents of periodic orbits. This connection between topological and smooth invariants is obtained through an analysis of the physical measure. Since the exponents of periodic orbits form a complete set of smooth invariants in this setting, we have ``typical geometric rigidity'' of the dynamics of such chaotic attractors. This unexpected result implies that the lamination structure of spaces of analytic maps (obtained by the partition into topological conjugacy classes, see \cite {ALM}) has an absolutely singular nature.

Phase-parameter relation and sharp statistical properties for general families of unimodal maps

We obtain estimates relating the phase space and the parameter space of analytic families of unimodal maps. Using those estimates, we show that typical analytic unimodal maps admit a quasiquadratic renormalization. This reduces the study of the statistical properties of typical unimodal maps to the quasiquadratic case which had been studied in \cite {AM2}. The estimates proved here correspond exactly to the Phase-Parameter relation proved in \cite {AM} in the quadratic case, and allows one to obtain sharp estimates on the dynamics of typical unimodal maps which were available only in the quadratic case: as an example we conclude that the exponent of the polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit is exactly one. We also show that those ideas lead to a new proof of a Theorem of Shishikura: the set of non-renormalizable parameters in the boundary of the Mandelbrot set has Lebesgue measure zero. Further applications of those results can be found in the companion paper \cite {AM3}.

Bifurcations of unimodal maps

We review recent results that lead to a very precise understanding of the dynamics of typical unimodal maps from the statistical point of view. We also describe the (generalized) renormalization approach to the study of the statistical properties of typical unimodal maps.

Smooth Siegel disks via semicontinuity: a remark on a proof of Buff and Cheritat

Recently, Xavier Buff and Arnaud Cheritat have provided an elegant proof of the existence of quadratic Siegel disks with smooth boundary. In this short note, we show how results of Yoccoz and Risler can be used to conclude the same result. Our proof is a small modification of the argument given by Buff and Cheritat.

Robust transitivity and topological mixing for $C^1$-flows

We prove that non-trivial homoclinic classes of $C^r$-generic flows are topologically mixing. This implies that given $Λ$ a non-trivial $C^1$-robustly transitive set of a vector field $X$, there is a $C^1$-perturbation $Y$ of $X$ such that the continuation $Λ_Y$ of $Λ$ is a topologically mixing set for $Y$. In particular, robustly transitive flows become topologically mixing after $C^1$-perturbations. These results generalize a theorem by Bowen on the basic sets of generic Axiom A flows. We also show that the set of flows whose non-trivial homoclinic classes are topologically mixing is \emph{not} open and dense, in general.

Infinitesimal perturbations of rational maps

We analyze the infinitesimal effect of holomorphic perturbations of the dynamics of a structurally stable rational map on a neighborhood of its Julia set. This implies some restrictions on the behavior of critical points.

A formula with some applications to the theory of Lyapunov exponents

We prove an elementary formula about the average expansion of certain products of 2 by 2 matrices. This permits us to quickly re-obtain an inequality by M. Herman and a theorem by Dedieu and Shub, both concerning Lyapunov exponents. Indeed, we show that equality holds in Herman's result. Finally, we give a result about the growth of the spectral radius of products.

Quasisymmetric robustness of the Collet-Eckmann condition in the quadratic family

We consider quasisymmetric reparametrizations of the parameter space of the quadratic family. We prove that the set of quadratic maps which are either regular or Collet-Eckmann with polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit has full Lebesgue measure. (The intent of this work is just to be a rigorous reference for the companion preprint Statistical properties of unimodal maps: smooth families with negative Schwarzian derivative. It is based on the LaTeX file of the paper Statistical properties of unimodal maps: the quadratic family. The proofs are very similar and in many places differ just by change of constants.)
