Lineability of functions in $C(K)$ with specified range

This paper is inspired by the paper of Leonetti, Russo and Somaglia [\textit{Dense lineability and spaceability in certain subsets of $\ell_\infty$.} Bull. London Math. Soc., 55: 2283--2303 (2023)] and the lineability problems raised therein. It concerns the properties of $\ell_\infty$ subsets defined by cluster points of sequences. Using the fact that the set of cluster points of a sequence $x$ depends only on its equivalence class in $\ell_\infty/c_0$ and that the quotient space $\ell_\infty/c_0$ is isometrically isomorphic to $C(β\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N})$, we are able to translate lineability problems from $\ell_\infty$ to $C(β\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N})$. We prove that for a compact space $K$ with properties similar to those of $β\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N}$, the sets of continuous functions $f$ in $C(K)$ with $\vert\operatorname{rng}(f)\vert=ω$ and those $f$ with $\vert\operatorname{rng}(f)\vert=\mathfrak c$ contain, up to zero function, an isometric copy of $c_0(κ)$ for uncountable cardinal $κ$. Specializing those results to some closed subspaces $K$ of $β\mathbb{N}\setminus\mathbb{N}$ we are able to generalize known results to their ideal versions.

On the $c_0$-equivalence and permutations of series

Assume that a convergent series of real numbers $\sum\limits_{n=1}^\infty a_n$ has the property that there exists a set $A\subseteq \N$ such that the series $\sum\limits_{n \in A} a_n$ is conditionally convergent. We prove that for a given arbitrary sequence $(b_n)$ of real numbers there exists a permutation $σ\colon \N \to \N$ such that $σ(n) = n$ for every $n \notin A$ and $(b_n)$ is $c_0$-equivalent to a subsequence of the sequence of partial sums of the series $\sum\limits_{n=1}^\infty a_{σ(n)}$. Moreover, we discuss a connection between our main result with the classical Riemann series theorem.

the center of distances for some multigeometric series

Basic properties of the center of distances of a set are investigated. Computation of the center for achievement sets is particularly aimed at. A new sufficient condition for the center of distances of the set of subsums of a fast convergent series to consist of only 0 and the terms of the series is found. A complete description of the center of distances for some particular type of multigeometric series is provided. In particular, the center of distances $C(E)$ is the union of all centers of distances of $C(F_n)$ where $F_n$ is the set of all $n$-initial subsums of the discussed multigeometric series satisfying some special requirements. Several open questions are raised.

Achievement sets of conditionally convergent series

Considering the sets of subsums of series (or achievement sets) we show that for conditionally convergent series the multidimensional case is much more complicated than that of the real line. Although we are far from the full topological classification of such sets, we present many surprising examples and catch the ideas standing behind them in general theorems.

Large free sets in universal algebras

We prove that for each universal algebra $(A,\mathcal A)$ of cardinality $|A|\ge 2$ and an infinite set $X$ of cardinality $|X|\ge|\mathcal A|$, the $X$-th power $(A^X,\mathcal A^X)$ of the algebra $(A,\mathcal A)$ contains a free subset $\mathcal F\subset A^X$ of cardinality $|\mathcal F|=2^{|X|}$. This generalizes the classical Fichtenholtz-Kantorovitch-Hausdorff result on the existence of an independent family $\mathcal I\subset\mathcal P(X)$ of cardinality $|\mathcal I|=|\mathcal P(X)|$ in the Boolean algebra $\mathcal P(X)$ of subsets of an infinite set $X$.

Topological and measure properties of some self-similar sets

Given a finite subset $Σ\subset\mathbb{R}$ and a positive real number $q<1$ we study topological and measure-theoretic properties of the self-similar set $K(Σ;q)=\big\{\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_nq^n:(a_n)_{n\inω}\inΣ^ω\big\}$, which is the unique compact solution of the equation $K=Σ+qK$. The obtained results are applied to studying partial sumsets $E(x)=\big\{\sum_{n=0}^\infty x_n\varepsilon_n:(\varepsilon_n)_{n\inω}\in\{0,1\}^ω\big\}$ of some (multigeometric) sequences $x=(x_n)_{n\inω}$.

Multigeometric sequences and Cantorvals

For a sequence $x \in l_1 \setminus c_{00}$, one can consider the achievement set $E(x)$ of all subsums of series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} x(n)$. It is known that $E(x)$ is one of the following types of sets: * finite union of closed intervals, * homeomorphic to the Cantor set, * homeomorphic to the set $T$ of subsums of $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} c(n)$ where $c(2n-1)=\frac{3}{4^n}$ and $c(2n)=\frac{2}{4^n}$ (Cantorval). Based on ideas of Jones and Velleman, and Guthrie and Nymann we describe families of sequences which contain, according to our knowledge, all known examples of $x$'s with $E(x)$ being Cantorvals.

Additivity and lineability in vector spaces

Gámez-Merino, Munoz-Fernández and Seoane-Sepúlveda proved that if additivity $\mathcal A(\mathcal F)>\mathfrak c$, then $\mathcal F$ is $\mathcal A(\mathcal F)$-lineable where $\mathcal F\subseteq\mathbb R^\mathbb R$. They asked if $\mathcal A(\mathcal F)>\mathfrak c$ can be weakened. We answer this question in negative. Moreover, we introduce and study the notions of homogeneous lineability number and lineability number of subsets of linear spaces.

Nonseparable spaceability and strong algebrability of sets of continuous singular functions

Let CBV denote the Banach algebra of all continuous real-valued functions of bounded variation, defined in [0,1]. We show that the set of strongly singular functions in CBV is nonseparably spaceable. We also prove that certain families of singular functions constitute strongly c-algebrable sets. The argument is based on a new general criterion of strong c-algebrability.

Large free linear algebras of real and complex functions

Let $X$ be a set of cardinality $κ$ such that $κ^ω=κ$. We prove that the linear algebra $\mathbb{R}^X$ (or $\mathbb{C}^X$) contains a free linear algebra with $2^κ$ generators. Using this, we prove several algebrability results for spaces $\mathbb{C}^\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{R}^\mathbb{R}$. In particular, we show that the set of all perfectly everywhere surjective functions $f:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}$ is strongly $2^\mathfrak{c}$-algebrable. We also show that the set of all functions $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ whose sets of continuity points equals some fixed $G_δ$ set $G$ is strongly $2^\mathfrak{c}$-algebrable if and only if $\mathbb{R}\setminus G$ is $\mathfrak{c}$-dense in itself.

The continuity properties of compact-preserving functions

A function $f:X\to Y$ between topological spaces is called {\em compact-preserving} if the image $f(K)$ of each compact subset $K\subset X$ is compact. We prove that a function $f:X\to Y$ defined on a strong Frechet space $X$ is compact-preserving if and only if for each point $x\in X$ there is a compact subset $K_x\subset Y$ such that for each neighborhood $O_{f(x)}\subset Y$ of $f(x)$ there is a neighborhood $O_x\subset X$ of $x$ such that $f(O_x)\subset O_{f(x)}\cup K_x$ and the set $K_x\setminus O_{f(x)}$ is finite. This characterization is applied to give an alternative proof of a classical characterization of continuous functions on locally connected metrizable spaces as functions that preserve compact and connected sets. Also we show that for each compact-preserving function $f:X\to Y$ defined on a (strong) Fréchet space $X$, the restriction $f|LI'_f$ (resp. $f|LI_f)$ is continuous. Here $LI_f$ is the set of points $x\in X$ of local infinity of $f$ and $LI'_f$ is the set of non-isolated points of the set $LI_f$. Suitable examples show that the obtained results cannot be improved.

Algebrability, non-linear properties, and special functions

We construct uncountably generated algebras inside the following sets of special functions: Sierpiński-Zygmund functions, perfectly everywhere surjective functions and nowhere continuous Darboux functions. All conclusions obtained in this paper are improvements of some already known results.
