Singular semilinear elliptic equations in nondivergence form

We study the singular semilinear equation $-Pu = \frac{f}{u^\gamma}$ on a bounded domain $\Omega$ with Dirichlet condition $u \equiv 0$ on $\partial \Omega$ , where $P$ is a second-order elliptic differential operator in nondivergence form. We obtain the existence of a solution under the assumptions that $\Omega \in C^{1,1}$ and $P$ has $C^1$ coefficients, as well as the uniqueness of solutions in $L^1(\Omega)$, under the assumptions that $\Omega \in C^2$ and $P$ has $C^2$ coefficients. Our proofs are based on a novel combination of tools, such as recently obtained nonlinear variants of Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequalities, estimates of Green functions, and new variants of Kato-type inequalities.

A Schauder regularity theory for nonlocal and mixed local-nonlocal viscous Hamilton$\unicode{x2013}$Jacobi equations

We prove space-time Schauder estimates $\unicode{x2013}$ optimal regularity estimates in H\"older spaces $\unicode{x2013}$ and well-posedness results for mild and classical solutions of viscous Hamilton$\unicode{x2013}$Jacobi equations with subcritical nonlocal and mixed local-nonlocal diffusions in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our spatial Schauder estimates hold under mild assumptions on the nonlocal/mixed operators and Hamiltonians. The Laplacian, fractional Laplacians, nonsymmetric, spectrally one-sided, and strongly anisotropic integral operators, as well as sums of such operators are covered. We observe an interplay between the regularity of the initial data and the growth of the Hamiltonian in the gradient, and develop a spatial Schauder theory for two canonical cases: (i) Lipschitz initial data and general Hamiltonians that are H\"older in space and merely locally Lipschitz in the gradient, and (ii) H\"older initial data and Hamiltonians that are H\"older in space and locally Lipschitz with power growth in the gradient. We compute explicit blow-up rates for $C^1$ and higher order H\"older norms as $t\to 0$. The results include short and long time existence of mild solutions, optimal regularity in H\"older spaces and corresponding Schauder a priori estimates, and that spatially smooth mild solutions are regular in time and pointwise classical solutions. Under further assumptions on the diffusion operator, we then prove time and space-time Schauder regularity estimates in optimal H\"older spaces which respect the natural fractional parabolic scaling. These results generalize classical linear local and fractional Schauder estimates to our non-linear fractional, possibly anisotropic and nonsymmetric setting.

Equivalence of definitions of fractional caloric functions

We prove equivalence between nonnegative distributional solutions of the fractional heat equation and caloric functions, i.e., functions satisfying the mean value property with respect to the space-time isotropic $\alpha$-stable process. We also provide sufficient conditions for the boundary and exterior data under which the solutions are classical and we give off-diagonal estimates for the derivatives of the Dirichlet heat kernel and the lateral Poisson kernel, which might be of their own interest.

Towards a Schauder theory for fractional viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations

We survey some results on Lipschitz and Schauder regularity estimates for viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations with subcritical Lévy diffusions. The Schauder estimates, along with existence of smooth solutions, are obtained with the help of a Duhamel formula and $L^1$ bounds on the spatial derivatives of the heat kernel. Our results cover very general nonlocal and mixed local-nonlocal diffusions, including strongly anisotropic, nonsymmetric, mixed order, and spectrally one-sided models.

Caloric functions and boundary regularity for the fractional Laplacian in Lipschitz open sets

We give Martin representation of nonnegative functions caloric with respect to the fractional Laplacian in Lipschitz open sets. The caloric functions are defined in terms of the mean value property for the space-time isotropic $α$-stable Lévy process. To derive the representation, we first establish the existence of the parabolic Martin kernel. This involves proving new boundary regularity results for both the fractional heat equation and the fractional Poisson equation with Dirichlet exterior conditions. Specifically, we demonstrate that the ratio of the solution and the Green function is Hölder continuous up to the boundary.

The master equation for mean field game systems with fractional and nonlocal diffusions

We prove existence and uniqueness of classical solutions of the master equation for mean field game (MFG) systems with fractional and nonlocal diffusions. We cover a large class of L\'evy diffusions of order greater than one, including purely nonlocal, local, and even mixed local-nonlocal operators. In the process we prove refined well-posedness results for the MFG systems, results that include the mixed local-nonlocal case. We also show various auxiliary results on viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations, linear parabolic equations, and linear forward-backward systems that may be of independent interest. This includes a rigorous treatment of certain equations and systems with data and solutions in the duals of H\"older spaces $C^\gamma_b$ on the whole of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We do not assume existence of any moments for the initial distributions of players. In a future work we will use the results of this paper to prove the convergence of $N$-player games to mean field games as $N\to\infty$.

Nonlinear nonlocal Douglas identity

We give Hardy-Stein and Douglas identities for nonlinear nonlocal Sobolev-Bregman integral forms with unimodal Lévy measures. We prove that the corresponding Poisson integral defines an extension operator for the Sobolev-Bregman spaces. We also show that the Poisson integrals are quasiminimizers of the Sobolev-Bregman forms.

Reduction of integration domain in Triebel-Lizorkin spaces

We investigate the comparability of generalized Triebel--Lizorkin and Sobolev seminorms on uniform and non-uniform sets when the integration domain is truncated according to the distance from the boundary. We provide numerous examples of kernels and domains in which the comparability does and does not hold.

Extension and trace for nonlocal operators

We prove an optimal extension and trace theorem for Sobolev spaces of nonlocal operators. The extension is given by a suitable Poisson integral and solves the corresponding nonlocal Dirichlet problem. We give a Douglas-type formula for the quadratic form of the Poisson extension.

The Dirichlet problem for nonlocal Lévy-type operators

We present the theory of the Dirichlet problem for nonlocal operators which are the generators of general pure-jump symmetric Lévy processes whose Lévy measures need not be absolutely continuous. We establish basic facts about the Sobolev spaces for such operators, in particular we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions. We present strong and weak variants of maximum principle, and L^\infty bounds for solutions. We also discuss the related extension problem in C^{1,1} domains.

Spiral structures and temperature distribution in the quiescent accretion disc of the cataclysmic binary V2051 Ophiuchi

We present the capabilities of our new code for obtaining Doppler maps implementing the maximum likelihood approach. As test data, we used observations of the dwarf nova V2051 Ophiuchi. The system was observed in quiescence at least 16 d before the onset of the next outburst. Using Doppler maps obtained for ten emission lines covering three orbital cycles, we detected spiral structures in the accretion disc of V2051 Oph. However, these structures could be biased as our data sampled the orbital period of the binary at only eight different orbital phases. Our Doppler maps show evolution from a one-arm wave structure in H$α$ to two-armed waves in the other lines. The location of the two-arm structures agrees with simulations showing tidally driven spiral waves in the accretion disc. During consecutive cycles, the qualitative characteristics of the detected structures remained similar but the central absorption increased. For the first time, using the Doppler tomography method, we obtained temperature maps of the accretion disc. However, taking into account all the assumptions involved when using our method to retrieve them, the result should be treated with caution. Our maps present a relatively flat distribution of the temperature over the disc, showing no temperature increase at the location of the spiral arms. Using `ring masking', we have revealed an ionized region located close to the expected location of stream--disc interactions. We found the average temperature of the accretion disc to be 5600 K, which is below the critical limit deduced from the disc instability model.

Speckle observations of binary stars with a 0.5 m telescope

We present 36 observations of 17 visual binaries of moderate separation (range from 0.15'' to 0.79'') made with the 50 cm Cassegrain telescope of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The speckle interferometry technique was combined with modest optical hardware and a standard photometric CCD camera. We used broad-band V,R,I filters without a Risley prism to reduce differential colour refraction, so we performed model analysis to investigate the influence of this effect on the results of measurements. For binary components of spectral type O-F, the difference of three spectral classes between them should bias their relative positions by no more than a couple of tens of milliarcseconds (mas) for moderate zenith distances. The statistical analysis of our results confirmed this conclusion. A cross-spectrum approach was applied to resolve the quadrant ambiguity. Our separations have RMS deviations of 0.012'' and our position angles have RMS deviations of 1.8 deg. Relative photometry in V, R and I filters appeared to be the less accurately determined parameter. We discuss our errors in detail and compare them to other speckle data. This comparison clearly shows the high value of our measurements. We also present an example of the enhancement of image resolution for an extended object of angular size greater than the atmospheric coherence patch using speckle interferometry techniques.

The first near infrared detection of XTE J1118+480 in quiescence

We report the first quiescent detection of KV UMa, the optical counterpart of XTE J1118+480 at near infrared. The observed magnitudes and colours are consistent with a K7-M0 V star, at the distance 1.4 +/- 0.2 kpc. The light curve shows strong orbital modulation with possible contamination from a superhump detected in the quiescent optical light curves.
