Two-component integrable extension of general heavenly equation

We introduce an integrable two-component extension of the general heavenly equation and prove that the solutions of this extension are in one-to-one correspondence with 4-dimensional hyper-para-Hermitian metrics. Furthermore, we demonstrate that if the metrics in question are hyper-para-Kähler, then our system reduces to the general heavenly equation. We also present an infinite hierarchy of nonlocal symmetries and a recursion operator for the system under study.

Generalized symmetries, conservation laws and Hamiltonian structures of an isothermal no-slip drift flux model

We study the hydrodynamic-type system of differential equations modeling isothermal no-slip drift flux. Using the facts that the system is partially coupled and its subsystem reduces to the (1+1)-dimensional Klein--Gordon equation, we exhaustively describe generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and local conservation laws of this system. A generating set of local conservation laws under the action of generalized symmetries is proved to consist of two zeroth-order conservation laws. The subspace of translation-invariant conservation laws is singled out from the entire space of local conservation laws. We also find broad families of local recursion operators and a nonlocal recursion operator, and construct an infinite family of Hamiltonian structures involving an arbitrary function of a single argument. For each of the constructed Hamiltonian operators, we obtain the associated algebra of Hamiltonian symmetries.

Deforming Lie algebras to Frobenius integrable non-autonomous Hamiltonian systems

Motivated by the theory of Painlevé equations and associated hierarchies, we study non-autonomous Hamiltonian systems that are Frobenius integrable. We establish sufficient conditions under which a given finite-dimensional Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields can be deformed to a time-dependent Lie algebra of Frobenius integrable vector fields spanning the same distribution as the original algebra. The results are applied to quasi-Stäckel systems.

Extended symmetry analysis of isothermal no-slip drift flux model

We perform extended group analysis for a system of differential equations modeling an isothermal no-slip drift flux. The maximal Lie invariance algebra of this system is proved to be infinite-dimensional. We also find the complete point symmetry group of this system, including discrete symmetries, using the megaideal-based version of the algebraic method. Optimal lists of one- and two-dimensional subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra in question are constructed and employed for obtaining reductions of the system under study. Since this system contains a subsystem of two equations that involves only two of three dependent variables, we also perform group analysis of this subsystem. The latter can be linearized by a composition of a fiber-preserving point transformation with a two-dimensional hodograph transformation to the Klein-Gordon equation. We also employ both the linearization and the generalized hodograph method for constructing the general solution of the entire system under study. We find inter alia genuinely generalized symmetries for this system and present the connection between them and the Lie symmetries of the subsystem we mentioned earlier. Hydrodynamic conservation laws and their generalizations are also constructed.

Dispersionless (3+1)-dimensional integrable hierarchies

In the present paper we introduce a multi-dimensional version of the R-matrix approach to the construction of integrable hierarchies. Applying this method to the case of the Lie algebra of functions with respect to the contact bracket, we construct integrable hierarchies of (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems of the type recently introduced by one of us in arXiv:1401.2122.

Integrable quantum Stäckel systems

The Stäckel separability of a Hamiltonian system is well known to ensure existence of a complete set of Poisson commuting integrals of motion quadratic in the momenta. In the present paper we consider a class of Stäckel separable systems where the entries of the Stäckel matrix are monomials in the separation variables. We show that the only systems in this class for which the integrals of motion arising from the Stäckel construction keep commuting after quantization are, up to natural equivalence transformations, the so-called Benenti systems. Moreover, it turns out that the latter are the only quantum separable systems (that is, they admit separation of variables in the Schrödinger equation) in the class under study.

Stability and dynamical features of solitary wave solutions for a hydrodynamic-type system taking into account non-local effects

We consider a hydrodynamic-type system of balance equations which is closed by the dynamic equation of state taking into account the effects of spatial nonlocality. Symmetry and local conservation laws of this system are studied. A system of ODEs being obtained via the group theory reduction of the initial system of PDEs is investigated. The reduced system is shown to possess a family of the homoclinic solutions. Depending on the values of the parameters, the homoclinic solutions describe the solitary waves of compression or rarefication. The solutions corresponding to the wave of compression are shown to be unstable. More likely, the waves of rarefication are stable. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the solitary waves of rarefication moving toward each other maintain their shape after the interaction.

Ordering of two small parameters in the shallow water wave problem

The classical problem of irrotational long waves on the surface of a shallow layer of an ideal fluid moving under the influence of gravity as well as surface tension is considered. A systematic procedure for deriving an equation for surface elevation for a prescribed relation between the orders of the two expansion parameters, the amplitude parameter $α$ and the long wavelength (or shallowness) parameter $β$, is developed. Unlike the heuristic approaches found in the literature, when modifications are made in the equation for surface elevation itself, the procedure starts from the consistently truncated asymptotic expansions for unidirectional waves, a counterpart of the Boussinesq system of equations for the surface elevation and the bottom velocity, from which the leading order and higher order equations for the surface elevation can be obtained by iterations. The relations between the orders of the two small parameters are taken in the form $β=O(α^n)$ and $α=O(β^m)$ with $n$ and $m$ specified to some important particular cases. The analysis shows, in particular, that some evolution equations, proposed before as model equations in other physical contexts (like the Gardner equation, the modified KdV equation, and the so-called 5th-order KdV equation), can emerge as the leading order equations in the asymptotic expansion for the unidirectional water waves, on equal footing with the KdV equation. The results related to the higher orders of approximation provide a set of consistent higher order model equations for unidirectional water waves which replace the KdV equation with higher-order corrections in the case of non-standard ordering when the parameters $α$ and $β$ are not of the same order of magnitude. (See the paper for the complete abstract.)

Conservation laws and normal forms of evolution equations

We study local conservation laws for evolution equations in two independent variables. In particular, we present normal forms for the equations admitting one or two low-order conservation laws. Examples include Harry Dym equation, Korteweg-de-Vries-type equations, and Schwarzian KdV equation. It is also shown that for linear evolution equations all their conservation laws are (modulo trivial conserved vectors) at most quadratic in the dependent variable and its derivatives.

Infinite hierarchies of nonlocal symmetries of the Chen--Kontsevich--Schwarz type for the oriented associativity equations

We construct infinite hierarchies of nonlocal higher symmetries for the oriented associativity equations using solutions of associated vector and scalar spectral problems. The symmetries in question generalize those found by Chen, Kontsevich and Schwarz (arXiv:hep-th/0508221) for the WDVV equations. As a byproduct, we obtain a Darboux-type transformation and a (conditional) Bäcklund transformation for the oriented associativity equations.

Infinitely many local higher symmetries without recursion operator or master symmetry: integrability of the Foursov--Burgers system revisited

We consider the Burgers-type system studied by Foursov, w_t &=& w_{xx} + 8 w w_x + (2-4α)z z_x, z_t &=& (1-2α)z_{xx} - 4αz w_x + (4-8α)w z_x - (4+8α)w^2 z + (-2+4α)z^3, (*) for which no recursion operator or master symmetry was known so far, and prove that the system (*) admits infinitely many local generalized symmetries that are constructed using a nonlocal {\em two-term} recursion relation rather than from a recursion operator.

Central extensions of cotangent universal hierarchy: (2+1)-dimensional bi-Hamiltonian systems

We introduce the cotangent universal hierarchy that extends the so-called universal hierarchy (as for the latter, see e.g. arXiv:nlin/0202008, arXiv:nlin/0312043 and arXiv:nlin/0310036). Then we construct a (2+1)-dimensional double central extension of the cotangent universal hierarchy and show that this extension is bi-Hamiltonian. This yields, as a byproduct, the central extension of the original universal hierarchy.

A Coordinate-Free Construction for a Class of Integrable Hydrodynamic-Type Systems

Using a (1,1)-tensor L with zero Nijenhuis torsion and maximal possible number (equal to the number of dependent variables) of distinct, functionally independent eigenvalues we define, in a coordinate-free fashion, the seed systems which are weakly nonlinear semi-Hamiltonian systems of a special form, and an infinite set of conservation laws for the seed systems. The reciprocal transformations constructed from these conservation laws yield a considerably larger class of hydrodynamic-type systems from the seed systems, and we show that these new systems are again defined in a coordinate-free manner, using the tensor L alone, and, moreover, are weakly nonlinear and semi-Hamiltonian, so their general solution can be obtained by means of the generalized hodograph method of Tsarev.

Complete Set of Commuting Symmetry Operators for the Klein-Gordon Equation in Generalized Higher-Dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS Spacetimes

We consider the Klein-Gordon equation in generalized higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime without imposing any restrictions on the functional parameters characterizing the metric. We establish commutativity of the second-order operators constructed from the Killing tensors found in arXiv:hep-th/0612029 and show that these operators, along with the first-order operators originating from the Killing vectors, form a complete set of commuting symmetry operators (i.e., integrals of motion) for the Klein-Gordon equation. Moreover, we demonstrate that the separated solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation obtained in arXiv:hep-th/0611245 are joint eigenfunctions for all of these operators. We also present explicit form of the zero mode for the Klein-Gordon equation with zero mass. In the semiclassical approximation we find that the separated solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for geodesic motion are also solutions for a set of Hamilton-Jacobi-type equations which correspond to the quadratic conserved quantities arising from the above Killing tensors.

Generalized Stäckel Transform and Reciprocal Transformations for Finite-Dimensional Integrable Systems

We present a multiparameter generalization of the Stäckel transform (the latter is also known as the coupling-constant metamorphosis) and show that under certain conditions this generalized Stäckel transform preserves the Liouville integrability, noncommutative integrability and superintegrability. The corresponding transformation for the equations of motion proves to be nothing but a reciprocal transformation of a special form, and we investigate the properties of this reciprocal transformation. Finally, we show that the Hamiltonians of the systems possessing separation curves of apparently very different form can be related through a suitably chosen generalized Stäckel transform.

Weakly Nonlocal Hamiltonian Structures: Lie Derivative and Compatibility

We show that under certain technical assumptions any weakly nonlocal Hamiltonian structure compatible with a given nondegenerate weakly nonlocal symplectic structure $J$ can be written as the Lie derivative of $J^{-1}$ along a suitably chosen nonlocal vector field. Moreover, we present a new description for local Hamiltonian structures of arbitrary order compatible with a given nondegenerate local Hamiltonian structure of zero or first order, including Hamiltonian operators of the Dubrovin-Novikov type.

The Sasa--Satsuma (complex mKdV II) and the complex sine-Gordon II equation revisited: recursion operators, nonlocal symmetries, and more

We found a new symplectic structure and a recursion operator for the Sasa--Satsuma equation widely used in nonlinear optics, $$ p_t=p_{xxx}+6 p q p_x+3 p (p q)_x,\quad q_t=q_{xxx}+6 p q q_x+3 q (p q)_x, $$ along with an integro-differential substitution linking this system to a third-order generalized symmetry of the complex sine-Gordon II system $$ u_{xy}=\frac{v u_x u_y}{u v + c} + (2 u v + c)(u v + c) k u,\qquad v_{xy}=\frac{u v_x v_y}{u v + c} + (2 u v + c)(u v + c) k v, $$ where $c$ and $k$ are arbitrary constants. Combining these two results yields a highly nonlocal hereditary recursion operator and higher Hamiltonian structures for the complex sine-Gordon II system. We also show that both the Sasa--Satsuma equation and the third order evolutionary symmetry flow for the complex sine-Gordon II system are bihamiltonian systems, and construct several hierarchies of local and nonlocal symmetries for these systems.
