On metric and cohomological properties of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds

We study metric and cohomological properties of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds. In particular, we describe the structure of the double complex of differential forms and its Bott-Chern cohomology and we characterize the existence of pluriclosed (aka SKT) metrics in number-theoretic and cohomological terms. Moreover, we prove they do not admit any Hermitian metric $ω$ such that $\partial \overline{\partial} ω^k=0$, for $2 \leq k \leq n-2$ and we give explicit formulas for the Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds admitting pluriclosed metrics.

Extremal problems for polynomials with real roots

We consider polynomials of degree $d$ with only real roots and a fixed value of discriminant, and study the problem of minimizing the absolute value of polynomials at a fixed point off the real line. There are two explicit families of polynomials that turn out to be extremal in terms of this problem. The first family has a particularly simple expression as a linear combination of $d$-th powers of two linear functions. Moreover, if the value of the discriminant is not too small, then the roots of the extremal polynomial and the smallest absolute value in question can be found explicitly. The second family is related to generalized Jacobi (or Gegenbauer) polynomials, which helps us to find the associated discriminants. We also investigate the dual problem of maximizing the value of discriminant, while keeping the absolute value of polynomials at a point away from the real line fixed. Our results are then applied to problems on the largest disks contained in lemniscates, and to the minimum energy problems for discrete charges on the real line.

Weighted Fekete points on the real line and the unit circle

Weighted Fekete points are defined as those that maximize the weighted version of the Vandermonde determinant over a fixed set. They can also be viewed as the equilibrium distribution of the unit discrete charges in an external electrostatic field. While these points have many applications, they are very difficult to find explicitly, and are only known in a few (unweighted) classical cases. We give two rare explicit examples of weighted Fekete points. The first one is for the weights $w(x)=|x-ai|^{-s}$ on the real line, with $s\ge 1$ and $a\neq 0,$ while the second is for the weights $w(z)=1/|z-b|$ on the unit circle, with $b\in\mathbb{R},\ b\neq\pm 1.$ In both cases, we provide solutions of the continuous energy problems with external fields that express the limit versions of considered weighted Fekete points problems.

On the number of integer polynomials with multiplicatively dependent roots

In this paper, we give some counting results on integer polynomials of fixed degree and bounded height whose distinct non-zero roots are multiplicatively dependent. These include sharp lower bounds, upper bounds and asymptotic formulas for various cases, although in general there is a logarithmic gap between lower and upper bounds.

On distances in lattices from algebraic number fields

In this paper, we study a classical construction of lattices from number fields and obtain a series of new results about their minimum distance and other characteristics by introducing a new measure of algebraic numbers. In particular, we show that when the number fields have few complex embeddings, the minimum distances of these lattices can be computed exactly.

Explicit form of Cassels' $p$-adic embedding theorem for number fields

In this paper, we mainly give a general explicit form of Cassels' $p$-adic embedding theorem for number fields. We also give its refined form in the case of cyclotomic fields. As a byproduct, given an irreducible polynomial $f$ over $Z$, we give a general unconditional upper bound for the smallest prime number $p$ such that $f$ has a simple root modulo $p$.

The conjugate dimension of algebraic numbers

We find sharp upper and lower bounds for the degree of an algebraic number in terms of the $Q$-dimension of the space spanned by its conjugates. For all but seven nonnegative integers $n$ the largest degree of an algebraic number whose conjugates span a vector space of dimension $n$ is equal to $2^n n!$. The proof, which covers also the seven exceptional cases, uses a result of Feit on the maximal order of finite subgroups of $GL_n(Q)$; this result depends on the classification of finite simple groups. In particular, we construct an algebraic number of degree 1152 whose conjugates span a vector space of dimension only 4. We extend our results in two directions. We consider the problem when $Q$ is replaced by an arbitrary field, and prove some general results. In particular, we again obtain sharp bounds when the ground field is a finite field, or a cyclotomic extension of $Q$. Also, we look at a multiplicative version of the problem by considering the analogous rank problem for the multiplicative group generated by the conjugates of an algebraic number.
