Is there a universal parametric city size distribution? Empirical evidence for 70 countries

We study the parametric description of the city size distribution (CSD) of 70 different countries (developed and developing) using seven models, as follows: the lognormal (LN), the loglogistic (LL), the double Pareto lognormal (dPLN), the two-lognormal (2LN), the two-loglogistic (2LL), the three-lognormal (3LN) and the three-loglogistic (3LL). Our results show that 3LN and 3LL are the best densities in terms of non-rejections out of standard statistical tests. Meanwhile, according to the information criteria AIC and BIC, there is no systematically dominant distribution.

On the parametric description of log-growth rates of cities' sizes of four European countries and the USA

We have studied the parametric description of the distribution of the log-growth rates of the sizes of cities of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the USA. We have considered several parametric distributions well known in the literature as well as some others recently introduced. There are some models that provide similar excellent performance, for all studied samples. The normal distribution is not the one observed empirically.

Student't mixture models for stock indices. A comparative study

We perform a comparative study for multiple equity indices of different countries using different models to determine the best fit using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic, the Anderson-Darling statistic, the Akaike information criterion and the Bayesian information criteria as goodness-of-fit measures. We fit models both to daily and to hourly log-returns. The main result is the excellent performance of a mixture of three Student's $t$ distributions with the numbers of degrees of freedom fixed a priori (3St). In addition, we find that the different components of the 3St mixture with small/moderate/high degree of freedom parameter describe the extreme/moderate/small log-returns of the studied equity indices.

Composite distributions in the social sciences: A comparative empirical study of firms' sales distribution for France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and Spain

We study 17 different statistical distributions for sizes obtained {}from the classical and recent literature to describe a relevant variable in the social sciences and Economics, namely the firms' sales distribution in six countries over an ample period. We find that the best results are obtained with mixtures of lognormal (LN), loglogistic (LL), and log Student's $t$ (LSt) distributions. The single lognormal, in turn, is strongly not selected. We then find that the whole firm size distribution is better described by a mixture, and there exist subgroups of firms. Depending on the method of measurement, the best fitting distribution cannot be defined by a single one, but as a mixture of at least three distributions or even four or five. We assess a full sample analysis, an in-sample and out-of-sample analysis, and a doubly truncated sample analysis. We also provide the formulation of the preferred models as solutions of the Fokker--Planck or forward Kolmogorov equation.

A short note on "Group theoretic approach to rationally extended shape invariant potentials" [Annals of Physics 359, 46 (2015)]

It is proved the equivalence of the compatibility condition of [A. Ramos, J. Phys. A 44 (2011) 342001, Phys. Lett. A 376 (2012) 3499] with a condition found in [Yadav et al., Ann. Phys. 359 (2015) 46]. The link of Shape Invariance with the existence of a Potential Algebra is reinforced for the rationally extended Shape Invariant potentials. Some examples on X1 and Xl Jacobi and Laguerre cases are given.

Symmetries and the compatibility condition for the new translational shape invariant potentials

In this letter we study a class of symmetries of the new translational extended shape invariant potentials. It is proved that a generalization of a compatibility condition introduced in a previous article is equivalent to the usual shape invariance condition. We focus on the recent examples of Odake and Sasaki (infinitely many polynomial, continuous $l$ and multi-index rational extensions). As a byproduct, we obtain new relations, to the best of our knowledge, for Laguerre, Jacobi polynomials and (confluent) hypergeometric functions.

On the new translational shape invariant potentials

Recently, several authors have found new translational shape invariant potentials not present in classic classifications like that of Infeld and Hull. For example, Quesne on the one hand and Bougie, Gangopadhyaya and Mallow on the other have provided examples of them, consisting on deformations of the classical ones. We analyze the basic properties of the new examples and observe a compatibility equation which has to be satisfied by them. We study particular cases of such equation and give more examples of new translational shape invariant potentials.

Bäcklund--Darboux transformations of traslationally shape-invariant potentials

Recently, Quesne on the one side and on the other side Bougie, Gangopadhyaya and Mallow, have discovered new translational shape invariant potentials not present in previous classifications. By using ordinary Bäcklund--Darboux transformations we propose a new framework in which such shape invariant potentials can be accommodated.

A geometric approach to time evolution operators of Lie quantum systems

Lie systems in Quantum Mechanics are studied from a geometric point of view. In particular, we develop methods to obtain time evolution operators of time-dependent Schrodinger equations of Lie type and we show how these methods explain certain ad hoc methods used in previous papers in order to obtain exact solutions. Finally, several instances of time-dependent quadratic Hamiltonian are solved.

Poisson structures for reduced non-holonomic systems

Borisov, Mamaev and Kilin have recently found certain Poisson structures with respect to which the reduced and rescaled systems of certain non-holonomic problems, involving rolling bodies without slipping, become Hamiltonian, the Hamiltonian function being the reduced energy. We study further the algebraic origin of these Poisson structures, showing that they are of rank two and therefore the mentioned rescaling is not necessary. We show that they are determined, up to a non-vanishing factor function, by the existence of a system of first-order differential equations providing two integrals of motion. We generalize the form of that Poisson structures and extend their domain of definition. We apply the theory to the rolling disk, the Routh's sphere, the ball rolling on a surface of revolution, and its special case of a ball rolling inside a cylinder.

Group theoretical approach to the intertwined Hamiltonians

We show that the finite difference Bäcklund formula for the Schrödinger Hamiltonians is a particular element of the transformation group on the set of Riccati equations considered by two of us in a previous paper. Then, we give a group theoretical explanation to the problem of Hamiltonians related by a first order differential operator. A generalization of the finite difference algorithm relating eigenfunctions of {\emph three} different Hamiltonians is found, and some illustrative examples of the theory are analyzed, finding new potentials for which one eigenfunction and its corresponding eigenvalue is exactly known.

Motion on Lie groups and its applications in Control Theory

The usefulness in control theory of the geometric theory of motion on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces will be shown. We quickly review some recent results concerning two methods to deal with these systems, namely, a generalization of the method proposed by Wei and Norman for linear systems, and a reduction procedure. This last method allows us to reduce the equation on a Lie group $G$ to that on a subgroup $H$, provided a particular solution of an associated problem in $G/H$ is known. These methods are shown to be very appropriate to deal with control systems on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, through the specific examples of the planar rigid body with two oscillators and the front-wheel driven kinematic car.

Applications of Lie systems in Quantum Mechanics and Control Theory

Some simple examples from quantum physics and control theory are used to illustrate the application of the theory of Lie systems. We will show, in particular, that for certain physical models both of the corresponding classical and quantum problems can be treated in a similar way, may be up to the replacement of the involved Lie group by a central extension of it. The geometric techniques developed for dealing with Lie systems are also used in problems of control theory. Specifically, we will study some examples of control systems on Lie groups and homogeneous spaces.

Second order SUSY transformations with `complex energies'

Second order supersymmetry transformations which involve a pair of complex conjugate factorization energies and lead to real non-singular potentials are analyzed. The generation of complex potentials with real spectra is also studied. The theory is applied to the free particle, one-soliton well and one-dimensional harmonic oscillator.
