Photon frequency shift in curvature based Extended Theories of Gravity

We study the frequency shift of photons generated by rotating gravitational sources in the framework of curvature based Extended Theories of Gravity. The discussion is developed considering the weak-field approximation. Following a perturbative approach, we analyze the process of exchanging photons between Earth and a given satellite, and we find a general relation to constrain the free parameters of gravitational theories. Finally, we suggest the Moon as a possible laboratory to test theories of gravity by future experiments which can be, in principle, based also on other Solar System bodies.

Astrophysical constraints on extended gravity models

We investigate the propagation of gravitational waves in the context of fourth order gravity nonminimally coupled to a massive scalar field. Using the damping of the orbital period of coalescing stellar binary systems, we impose constraints on the free parameters of extended gravity models. In particular, we find that the variation of the orbital period is a function of three mass scales which depend on the free parameters of the model under consideration; we can constrain these mass scales from current observational data.

The Weak Field Limit of Fourth Order Gravity

We discuss Newtonian and the post-Newtonian limits of Fourth Order Gravity Theories pointing out, in details, their resemblances and differences with respect to General Relativity. Particular emphasis is placed on the exact solutions and methods used to obtain them.

Axially symmetric solutions in f(R)-gravity

Axially symmetric solutions for f (R)-gravity can be derived starting from exact spherically sym- metric solutions achieved by Noether symmetries. The method takes advantage of a complex coordi- nate transformation previously developed by Newman and Janis in General Relativity. An example is worked out to show the general validity of the approach. The physical properties of the solution are also considered.

The Weak Field Limit of Higher Order Gravity

The Higher Order Theories of Gravity - $f(R, R_{αβ}R^{αβ})$ - theory, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $R_{αβ}$ is the Ricci tensor and $f$ is any analytic function - have recently attracted a lot of interest as alternative candidates to explain the observed cosmic acceleration, the flatness of the rotation curves of spiral galaxies and other relevant astrophysical phenomena. It is a crucial point testing these alternative theories in the so called weak field and newtonian limit of a $f(R, R_{αβ}R^{αβ})$ - theory. With this "perturbation technique" it is possible to find spherically symmetric solutions and compare them with the ones of General Relativity. On both approaches we found a modification of General Relativity: the behaviour of gravitational potential presents a modification Yukawa - like in the newtonian case and a massive propagation in the weak field case. When the modification of the theory is removed (i.e. $f(R, R_{αβ}R^{αβ}) = R$, Hilbert - Einstein lagrangian) we find the usual outcomes of General Relativity. Also the Noether symmetries technique has been investigated to find some time independent spherically symmetric solutions.
