Zero-field splitting of the Kondo resonance and quantum criticality in triple quantum dots

We consider a triple-quantum-dot (TQD) system composed by an interacting quantum dot connected to two effectively non-interacting dots, which in turn are both connected in parallel to metallic leads. As we show, this system can be mapped onto a single-impurity Anderson model with a non-trivial density of states. The TQD's transport properties are investigated under a continuous tuning of the non-interacting dots' energy-levels, employing the Numerical Renormalization Group technique. Interference between single and many-particle resonances splits the Kondo peak, fulfilling a generalized Friedel sum rule. In addition, a particular configuration in which one of the non-interacting dots is held out of resonance with the leads allows to access a pseudogap regime where a Kosterlitz-Thouless type quantum-phase-transition (QPT) occur, separating the Kondo and non-Kondo behavior. Within this same configuration, the TQD exhibits traces of the Fano-Kondo effect, which is in turn, strongly affected by the QPT. Signatures of all these phenomena are neatly displayed by the calculated linear conductance.

Magnetic field induced mixed-level Kondo effect in two-level systems

We consider a two-orbital impurity system with intra and inter-level Coulomb repulsion that is coupled to a single conduction channel. This situation can generically occur in multilevel quantum dots or in systems of coupled quantum dots. For finite energy-spacing between spin-degenerate orbitals, an in-plane magnetic field drives the system from a local singlet ground state to a "mixed-level" Kondo regime, where the Zeeman-split levels are degenerate for opposite spin states. We use the numerical renormalization group approach to fully characterize this mixed level Kondo state and discuss its properties in terms of the applied Zeeman field, temperature and system parameters. Under suitable conditions, the total spectral function is shown to develop a Fermi level resonance, so that the linear conductance of the system peaks at a finite Zeeman field while it decreases as function of temperature. These features, as well as the local moment and entropy contribution of the impurity system are commensurate with Kondo physics, which can be studied in suitably tuned quantum dot systems.

Influence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the Kondo effect

An Anderson model for a magnetic impurity in a two-dimensional electron gas with bulk Rashba spin-orbit interaction is solved using the numerical renormalization group under two different experimental scenarios. For a fixed Fermi energy, the Kondo temperature T_K varies weakly with Rashba coupling α, as reported previously. If instead the band filling is low and held constant, increasing αcan drive the system into a helical regime with exponential enhancement of T_K. Under either scenario, thermodynamic properties at low temperatures T exhibit the same dependences on T/T_K as are found for α= 0. Unlike the conventional Kondo effect, however, the impurity exhibits static spin correlations with conduction electrons of nonzero orbital angular momentum about the impurity site. We also consider a magnetic field that Zeeman splits the conduction band but not the impurity level, an effective picture that arises under a proposed route to access the helical regime in a driven system. The impurity contribution to the system's ground-state angular momentum is found to be a universal function of the ratio of the Zeeman energy to a temperature scale that is not T_K (as would be the case in a magnetic field that couples directly to the impurity spin), but rather is proportional to T_K divided by the impurity hybridization width. This universal scaling is explained via a perturbative treatment of field-induced changes in the electronic density of states.

Kondo effect in graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We study the Kondo screening of a magnetic impurity adsorbed in graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The system is described by an effective single-channel Anderson impurity model, which we analyze using the numerical renormalization group. The nontrivial energy dependence of the host density of states gives rise to interesting behaviors under variation of the chemical potential or the spin-orbit coupling. Varying the Rashba coupling produces strong changes in the Kondo temperature characterizing the many-body screening of the impurity spin, and at half filling allows approach to a quantum phase transition separating the strong-coupling Kondo phase from a free-moment phase. Tuning the chemical potential close to sharp features of the hybridization function results in striking features in the temperature dependences of thermodynamic quantities and in the frequency dependence of the impurity spectral function.

Quantum phase transitions into Kondo states in bilayer graphene

We study a magnetic impurity intercalated in bilayer graphene. A representative configuration generates a hybridization function with strong dependence on the conduction-electron energy, including a full gap with one hard and one soft edge. Shifts of the chemical potential via gating or doping drive the system between non-Kondo (free-moment) and Kondo-screened phases, with strong variation of the Kondo scale. Quantum phase transitions near the soft edge are of Kosterlitz-Thouless type, while others are first order. Near the hard edge, a bound-state singlet appears inside the gap; although of single-particle character, its signatures in scanning tunneling spectroscopy are very similar to those arising from a many-body Kondo resonance.

Signatures of quantum phase transitions in parallel quantum dots: Crossover from local-moment to underscreened spin-1 Kondo physics

We study a strongly interacting "quantum dot 1" and a weakly interacting "dot 2" connected in parallel to metallic leads. Gate voltages can drive the system between Kondo-quenched and non-Kondo free-moment phases separated by Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transitions. Away from the immediate vicinity of the quantum phase transitions, the physical properties retain signatures of first-order transitions found previously to arise when dot 2 is strictly noninteracting. As interactions in dot 2 become stronger relative to the dot-lead coupling, the free moment in the non-Kondo phase evolves smoothly from an isolated spin-one-half in dot 1 to a many-body doublet arising from the incomplete Kondo compensation by the leads of a combined dot spin-one. These limits, which feature very different spin correlations between dot and lead electrons, can be distinguished by weak-bias conductance measurements performed at finite temperatures.

Spin Hall and longitudinal conductivity of a conserved spin current in two dimensional heavy-hole gases

The spin Hall and longitudinal conductivity of a 2D heavy-hole gas with {\it k}-cubic Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction is studied in the ac frequency domain. Using Kubo linear-response theory and a recently proposed definition for the (conserved) spin current operator suitable for spin-3/2 holes, it is shown that the spin conductivity tensor exhibit very distinguishable features from those obtained with the standard definition of the spin current. This is due to a significant contribution of the spin-torque term arisen from the alternative definition of spin current which strongly affects the magnitude and the sign of the dynamic spin current. In the dc (free of disorder) limit, the spin Hall conductivity for only (or dominant) {\it k}-cubic Rashba coupling is $σ^{s,z}_{xy}(0)=-9e/8π$, whereas $σ^{s,z}_{xy}(0)=-3e/8π$ for only (or dominant) {\it k}-cubic Dresselhaus coupling. Such anisotropic response is understood in terms of the absence of mapping the {\it k}-cubic Rashba $\leftrightarrow$ Dresselhaus Hamiltonians. This asymmetry is also responsible for the non-vanishing dc spin Hall conductivity ($σ^{s,z}_{xy}(0)=-6e/8π$) when the Rashba and Dresselhaus parameters have the same strength, in contrast with its corresponding case for electrons. These results are of relevance to validate the alternative definition of spin-current through measurements in the frequency domain of the spin accumulation and/or spin currents in 2D hole gases.

Spin torque contribution to the a.c. spin Hall conductivity

Using the recently proposed definition of a conserved spin-current operator [J. Shi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 076604 (2006)] we explore the frequency dependent spin Hall conductivity for a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction in response to an oscillating electric field. We show that the optical spectrum of the spin Hall conductivity exhibit remarkable changes when the new definition of spin current is applied. Such behavior is mainly due to a significant contribution of the spin torque term which is absent in the conventional form of the spin current. In addition, it is observed that the magnitude and direction of the dynamic spin Hall current strongly depends on the electric field frequency as with the interplay of the spin-orbit coupling strengths.
