Energy flow between two hydrodynamically coupled particles kept at different effective temperatures

We measure the energy exchanged between two hydrodynamically coupled micron-sized Brownian particles trapped in water by two optical tweezers. The system is driven out of equilibrium by random forcing the position of one of the two particles. The forced particle behaves as it has an "effective temperature" higher than that of the other bead. This driving modifies the equilibrium variances and cross-correlation functions of the bead positions: we measure an energy flow between the particles and an instantaneous cross-correlation, proportional to the effective temperature difference between the two particles. A model of the interaction which is based on classical hydrodynamic coupling tensors is proposed. The theoretical and experimental results are in excellent agreement.

Information and thermodynamics: Experimental verification of Landauer's erasure principle

We present an experiment in which a one-bit memory is constructed, using a system of a single colloidal particle trapped in a modulated double-well potential. We measure the amount of heat dissipated to erase a bit and we establish that in the limit of long erasure cycles the mean dissipated heat saturates at the Landauer bound, i.e. the minimal quantity of heat necessarily produced to delete a classical bit of information. This result demonstrates the intimate link between information theory and thermodynamics. To stress this connection we also show that a detailed Jarzynski equality is verified, retrieving the Landauer's bound independently of the work done on the system. The experimental details are presented and the experimental errors carefully discussed

Phase transition oscillations induced by a strongly focused laser beam

We report here the observation of a surprising phenomenon consisting in a oscillating phase transition which appears in a binary mixture, PMMA/3-octanone, when this is enlightened by a strongly focused infrared laser beam. PMMA/3-octanone has a UCST (Upper Critical Solution Temperature) which presents a critical point at temperature Tc = 306.6 K and volume fraction $ϕ$c = 12.8 % [Crauste et al., ArXiv 1310.6720, 2012]. This oscillatory phenomenon appears because of thermophoretic and electrostriction effects and non-linear diffusion. We analyze these oscillations and we propose a simple model which includes the minimal ingredients to produce the oscillatory behavior. Phase transitions in binary mixtures are still a widely studied subject, specifically near the critical point where several interesting and not completely understood phenomena may appear, among them we recall the critical Casimir forces [2],[3], confinement effects [4], [5] and out-of-equilibrium dynamics after a quench. The perturbation of the binary mixtures by mean of external fields is also an important and recent field of investigation [6]. For example, a laser can induce interesting phenomena in demixing binary mixtures because the radiation pressure can deform the interface between the two phases and it can be used to measure the interface tension [7]. Depending on the nature of the binary mixtures, laser illumination can also lead to a mixing or demixing transition. In ref.[8], focused infrared laser light heats the medium initially in the homogeneous phase and causes a separation in the LCST (Low Critical Solution Temperature) system. The radiation pressure gradients in a laser beam also contribute in the aggregation of polymers , thus producing a phase transition. The local heating may induce thermophoretic forces which attract towards the laser beam one of the binary-mixture components [9]. Other forces like electrostriction can also be involved [10]. In this letter, we report a new phenomenon, which consists in an oscillating phase transition induced by a constant illumination from an infrared laser beam in the heterogeneous region of an UCST (Upper Critical Solution Temperature) binary mixture. Oscillation phenomena in phase transition have already been reported in slow cooling UCST [11],[12] but as far as we know, never induced by a stationary laser illumination. After describing our experimental setup , we will present the results. Then we will use a very simplified model which contains the main necessary physical ingredients to induce this oscillation phenomenon.

Detailed Jarzynski Equality applied on a Logically Irreversible Procedure

A single bit memory system is made with a brownian particle held by an optical tweezer in a double-well potential and the work necessary to erase the memory is measured. We show that the minimum of this work is close to the Landauer's bound only for very slow erasure procedure. Instead a detailed Jarzynski equality allows us to retrieve the Landauer's bound independently on the speed of this erasure procedure. For the two separated subprocesses, i.e. the transition from state 1 to state 0 and the transition from state 0 to state 0, the Jarzynski equality does not hold but the generalized version links the work done on the system to the probability that it returns to its initial state under the time-reversed procedure.

Dynamics of a Liquid Crystal close to the Fréedericksz transition

We report experimental and numerical evidences that the dynamics of the director of a liquid crystal driven by an electric field close to the critical point of the Fréedericksz Transition(FT) is not described by a Landau-Ginzburg (LG) equation as it is usually done in literature. The reasons are related to the very crude approximations done to obtain this equation, to the finite value of the anchoring energy and to small asymmetries on boundary conditions. We also discuss the difference between the use of LG equation for the statics and the dynamics. These results are useful in all cases where FT is used as an example for other orientational transitions.

New method of determination of the Fréedericksz threshold based upon precise fluctuation measurement

In this paper we report a new method for determining the critical threshold of the Fréedericksz transition driven by an electric field. It is based on the measurement of the amplitude of the molecule fluctuations as a function of the voltage difference applied to a planar nematic cell. The precise measurement of the director fluctuations of the liquid crystal is made possible by the use of a very precise and sensitive polarization interferometer. The great advantage of the method is that it does not depend on complex fits as it is usually done in literature.

Fluctuations, linear response and heat flux of an aging system

We measure the fluctuations of the position of a Brownian particle confined by an optical trap in an aging gelatin droplet after a fast quench. Its linear response to an external perturbation is also measured. We compute the spontaneous heat flux from the particle to the bath due to the nonequilibrium formation of the gel. We show that the mean heat flux is quantitatively related to the violation of the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem as a measure of the broken detailed balance during the aging process.

Heat fluctuations in an out of equilibrium bath

We measure the energy fluctuations of a Brownian particle confined by an optical trap in an aging gelatin after a very fast quench (less than 1 ms). The strong nonequilibrium fluctuations due to the assemblage of the gel, are interpreted, within the framework of fluctuation theorem, as a heat flux from the particle towards the bath. We derive, from a simple model, an analytical expression of the heat probability distribution, which fits the experimental data and satisfies a fluctuation relation similar to that of a system in contact with two baths at different temperatures.

Fluctuations and response in a non-equilibrium micron-sized system

The linear response of non-equilibrium systems with Markovian dynamics satisfies a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation derived from time symmetry and antisymmetry properties of the fluctuations. The relation involves the sum of two correlation functions of the observable of interest: one with the entropy excess and the second with the excess of dynamical activity with respect to the unperturbed process, without recourse to anything but the dynamics of the system. We illustrate this approach in the experimental determination of the linear response of the potential energy of a Brownian particle in a toroidal optical trap. The overdamped particle motion is effectively confined to a circle, undergoing a periodic potential and driven out of equilibrium by a non-conservative force. Independent direct and indirect measurements of the linear response around a non-equilibrium steady state are performed in this simple experimental system. The same ideas are applicable to the measurement of the response of more general non-equilibrium micron-sized systems immersed in Newtonian fluids either in stationary or non-stationary states and possibly including inertial degrees of freedom.

Steady state fluctuation relations for systems driven by an external random force

We experimentally study the fluctuations of the work done by an external Gaussian random force on two different stochastic systems coupled to a thermal bath: a colloidal particle in an optical trap and an atomic force microscopy cantilever. We determine the corresponding probability density functions for different random forcing amplitudes ranging from a small fraction to several times the amplitude of the thermal noise. In both systems for sufficiently weak forcing amplitudes the work fluctuations satisfy the usual steady state fluctuation theorem. As the forcing amplitude drives the system far from equilibrium, deviations of the fluctuation theorem increase monotonically. The deviations can be recasted to a single master curve which only depends on the kind of stochastic external force.

Experimental verification of a modified fluctuation-dissipation relation for a micron-sized particle in a non-equilibrium steady state

A modified fluctuation-dissipation-theorem (MFDT) for a non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) is experimentally checked by studying the position fluctuations of a colloidal particle whose motion is confined in a toroidal optical trap. The NESS is generated by means of a rotating laser beam which exerts on the particle a sinusoidal conservative force plus a constant non-conservative one. The MFDT is shown to be perfectly verified by the experimental data. It can be interpreted as an equilibrium-like fluctuation-dissipation relation in the Lagrangian frame of the mean local velocity of the particle.

Experimental study of out of equilibrium fluctuations in a colloidal suspension of Laponite using optical traps

This work is devoted to the study of displacement fluctuations of micron-sized particles in an aging colloidal glass. We address the issue of the validity of the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) and the time evolution of viscoelastic properties during aging of aqueous suspensions of a clay (Laponite RG) in a colloidal glass phase. Given the conflicting results reported in the literature for different experimental techniques, our goal is to check and reconcile them using \emph{simultaneously} passive and active microrheology techniques. For this purpose we measure the thermal fluctuations of micro-sized brownian particles immersed in the colloidal glass and trapped by optical tweezers. We find that both microrheology techniques lead to compatible results even at low frequencies and no violation of FDT is observed. Several interesting features concerning the statistical properties and the long time correlations of the particles are observed during the transition.

Work fluctuations in a nematic liquid crystal

The orientation fluctuations of the director of a liquid crystal are measured, by a sensitive polarization interferometer, close to the Fréedericksz transition, which is a second order transition driven by an electric field. Using mean field theory, we define the work injected into the system by a change of the electric field and we calibrate it using Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem. We show that the work fluctuations satisfy the Transient Fluctuation Theorem. An analytical justification of this result is given. The open problems for the out of equilibrium case are finally discussed.

Probability density functions of work and heat near the stochastic resonance of a colloidal particle

We study experimentally and theoretically the probability density functions of the injected and dissipated energy in a system of a colloidal particle trapped in a double well potential periodically modulated by an external perturbation. The work done by the external force and the dissipated energy are measured close to the stochastic resonance where the injected power is maximum. We show a good agreement between the probability density functions exactly computed from a Langevin dynamics and the measured ones. The probability density function of the work done on the particle satisfies the fluctuation theorem.

Effective Temperature in a Colloidal Glass

We study the Brownian motion of particles trapped by optical tweezers inside a colloidal glass (Laponite) during the sol-gel transition. We use two methods based on passive rheology to extract the effective temperature from the fluctuations of the Brownian particles. All of them give a temperature that, within experimental errors, is equal to the heat bath temperature. Several interesting features concerning the statistical properties and the long time correlations of the particles are observed during the transition.

Thermodynamic time asymmetry in nonequilibrium fluctuations

We here present the complete analysis of experiments on driven Brownian motion and electric noise in a $RC$ circuit, showing that thermodynamic entropy production can be related to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in the statistical description of these nonequilibrium systems. The symmetry breaking can be expressed in terms of dynamical entropies per unit time, one for the forward process and the other for the time-reversed process. These entropies per unit time characterize dynamical randomness, i.e., temporal disorder, in time series of the nonequilibrium fluctuations. Their difference gives the well-known thermodynamic entropy production, which thus finds its origin in the time asymmetry of dynamical randomness, alias temporal disorder, in systems driven out of equilibrium.

Entropy production and time asymmetry in nonequilibrium fluctuations

The time-reversal symmetry of nonequilibrium fluctuations is experimentally investigated in two out-of-equilibrium systems namely, a Brownian particle in a trap moving at constant speed and an electric circuit with an imposed mean current. The dynamical randomness of their nonequilibrium fluctuations is characterized in terms of the standard and time-reversed entropies per unit time of dynamical systems theory. We present experimental results showing that their difference equals the thermodynamic entropy production in units of Boltzmann's constant.
