Unraveling the Bott spiral

We construct and compute a homotopy-theoretic model for the Bott spiral of symmetry-protected topological phases (SPTs) studied by Queiroz--Khalaf--Stern. We model free and interacting fermionic SPTs using K-theory and reflection-positive invertible field theories (IFTs), resp., and define a twisted generalization of the Atiyah--Bott--Shapiro orientation to produce a free-to-interacting map. We also define and compute spiral maps of IFTs to model dimensional reduction in this context, answering a question of Hason--Komargodski--Thorngren. Our analysis highlights two general aspects of homotopical free-to-interacting maps. First, IFTs are more sensitive than K-theory is to the input symmetry data; in particular, the specification of an Altland--Zirnbauer class is insufficient information to define symmetry type for an IFT. Second, the remnant of Bott periodicity on the interacting side relies on an isomorphism of two extraspecial groups of order 32. Our computations use a novel 4-periodic description of a sector of the twisted ko-homology of elementary abelian 2-groups.

Symmetric Gapped States and Symmetry-Enforced Gaplessness in 3-dimension

We establish a comprehensive framework for characterizing the infrared (IR) phases of a fermionic quantum theory in three spatial dimensions, based on its quantum anomalies associated with a finite symmetry. We uncover a fundamental dichotomy among these anomalies: the first class of anomalies can always be realized by symmetric gapped states, while the second class can never be realized by gapped states without breaking the given symmetry, establishing the phenomenon of symmetry-enforced gaplessness in these settings. Moreover, using the construction of symmetry extension, we construct the candidate gapped states that theories with the first class of anomalies can flow to in the IR. As an application, we provide concrete predictions of the candidate IR phases of (3+1)-dimensional gauge theories based on our results. Our results also suggest that systems with discrete chiral anomalies cannot be gapped out by adding arbitrary bosonic degrees of freedom.

Hyperk\"ahler bases for six rational bordism theories

We use tori and Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces to construct explicit bases for the real, complex, and quaternionic versions of rational symplectic and rational Spin bordism. The key input to our work is a theorem of Oberdieck, Song, and Voisin on the Milnor genus of Hilbert schemes of K3s.

How to Build Anomalous (3+1)d Topological Quantum Field Theories

We develop a systematic framework for constructing (3+1)-dimensional topological orders or topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) that realize specified anomalies of finite symmetries, as encountered in gauge theories with fermions or in fermionic lattice systems. Our approach generalizes the symmetry-extension construction to the fermionic setting, and is grounded in recent advances in the categorical classification of anomalous TQFTs in (3+1)d. In this framework, symmetry-extension data of a supercohomology theory are translated into a fusion 2-category, on which the anomalous TQFT is built. Building on this machinery, we demonstrate explicit calculations for various symmetry groups and their associated anomalies, with the help of a hastened Adams spectral sequence for computing supercohomology groups which we will detail in a planned sequel. Finally, we prove that all supercohomology anomalies can be realized by fermionic topological orders, whereas beyond-supercohomology anomalies cannot, resolving a question of C\'ordova--Ohmori for fermionic (3+1)d systems with finite symmetries.

Exploring Pintopia: Reflection Branes, Bordisms, and U-Dualities

The U-dualities of maximally supersymmetric non-chiral supergravity (SUGRA) theories lead to strong constraints on the non-perturbative structure of quantum gravity. In this paper we determine Spin- and Pin-lifts of these dualities, which extend this action to fermionic degrees of freedom. Among other things, this allows us to access non-supersymmetric sectors of these low energy effective field theories in which bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom are treated differently. We use this refinement of the duality groups, in tandem with the Swampland Cobordism Conjecture, to predict new codimension-two branes. These are a natural generalization of the recently discovered R7-branes of type II string theories. The first bordism groups for Spin-twisted duality bundles follow directly from the Abelianization of the duality groups. Viewing the SUGRA theory as the low energy limit of a toroidal compactification of M-theory, winding around these codimension-two defects enacts a reflection around one of the torus directions, which in the effective field theory appears as a charge conjugation symmetry. We establish some basic properties of such branes, including determining BPS objects which can end on it, as well as braiding rules and bound states realized by multiple reflection branes.

Cobordism Utopia: U-Dualities, Bordisms, and the Swampland

The U-dualities of maximally supersymmetric supergravity theories lead to celebrated non-perturbative constraints on the structure of quantum gravity. They can also lead to the presence of global symmetries since manifolds equipped with non-trivial duality bundles can carry topological charges captured by non-trivial elements of bordism groups. The recently proposed Swampland Cobordism Conjecture thus predicts the existence of new singular objects absent in the low-energy supergravity theory, which break these global symmetries. We investigate this expectation in two directions, involving the different choices of U-duality groups $G_U$, as well as $k$, the dimension of the closed manifold carrying the topological charge. First, we compute for all supergravity theories in dimension $3 \leq D \leq 11$ the bordism groups $\Omega_1^{\text{Spin}}(BG_U)$. Second, we treat in detail the case of $D = 8$, computing all relevant bordism groups $\Omega_k^{\text{Spin}}(BG_U)$ for $1 \leq k \leq 7$. In all cases, we identify corresponding string, M-, or F-theory backgrounds which implement the required U-duality defects. In particular, we find that in some cases there is no purely geometric background available which implements the required symmetry-breaking defect. This includes non-geometric twists as well as non-geometric strings and instantons. This computation involves several novel computations of the bordism groups for $G_U = \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}) \times \mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$, which localizes at primes $p=2,3$. Whereas an amalgamated product structure greatly simplifies the calculation of purely $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ bundles, this does not extend to $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$. Rather, we leverage the appearance of product / ring structures induced from cyclic subgroups of $G_U$ which naturally act on the relevant bordism groups.

Global Structure in the Presence of a Topological Defect

We investigate the global structure of topological defects which wrap a submanifold $F\subset M$ in a quantum field theory defined on a closed manifold $M$. The Pontryagin-Thom construction oversees the interplay between the global structure of $F$ and the global structure of $M$. We will employ this construction to two distinct mathematical frameworks with physical applications. The first framework is the concept of a characteristic structure, consisting of the data of pairs of manifolds $(M,F)$ where $F$ is Poincar\'e dual to some characteristic class. This concept is discussed in the mathematics literature, and shown here to have meaningful physical interpretations related to defects. In our examples we will mainly focus on the case where $M$ is 4-dimensional and $F$ has codimension 2. The second framework uses obstruction theory and the fact that spontaneously broken finite symmetries leave behind domain walls, to determine the conditions on which dimensions a higher-form finite symmetry can spontaneously break. We explicitly study the cases of higher-form $\mathbb Z/2$ symmetry, but the method can be generalized to other groups.

Type IIA String Theory and tmf with Level Structure

We look at a new string$^h$ tangential structure first introduced by Devalapurkar and relate it to the $W_7=0$ condition of Diaconescu-Moore-Witten for type IIA string theory and M-theory. We show that a string$^h$ structure on the target space automatically satisfies the $W_7=0$ condition and we also explain when the $W_7=0$ condition gives rise to a string$^h$ structure. Devalapurkar initially constructed $MString^h$ in such a way that it orients $tmf_1(3)$; we extend Devalapurkar's result, showing that $MString^h$ orients $tmf_1(n)$. We compute the homotopy groups of $MString^h$ in the dimensions relevant for physical applications, and apply them to anomaly cancellation applications for certain compactifications of type IIA string theory.

Weak topological phases in the presence of interactions

We study weak symmetry-protected topological phases (SPTs) in the presence of short-range interactions. By comparing homotopical free and interacting classifications of these SPTs, we predict their stability under interactions as well as identify potential intrinsically-interacting phases. We mathematically compute the groups of weak phases in dimensions zero through three for all tenfold-way symmetry types using homotopy theory; specifically, we use Atiyah's Real $\mathit{KR}$-theory and the low-energy invertible field theory ansatz of Freed--Hopkins for the free and interacting cases, resp. Our computational techniques involve T-duality, which relates $K$-theory of the spatial torus with $K$-theory of the Brillouin torus, and a binomial formula for computing generalized cohomology of a torus. Our results carry potential implications for theoretical and experimental studies of weak phases.

Smith homomorphisms and Spin$^h$ structures

In this article, we answer two questions of Buchanan-McKean (arXiv:2312.08209) about bordism for manifolds with spin$^h$ structures: we establish a Smith isomorphism between the reduced spin$^h$ bordism of $\mathbb{RP}^\infty$ and pin$^{h-}$ bordism, and we provide a geometric explanation for the isomorphism $\Omega_{4k}^{\mathrm{Spin}^c} \otimes\mathbb Z[1/2] \cong \Omega_{4k}^{\mathrm{Spin}^h} \otimes\mathbb Z[1/2]$. Our proofs use the general theory of twisted spin structures and Smith homomorphisms that we developed in arXiv:2405.04649 joint with Devalapurkar, Liu, Pacheco-Tallaj, and Thorngren, specifically that the Smith homomorphism participates in a long exact sequence with explicit, computable terms.

The Smith Fiber Sequence and Invertible Field Theories

Smith homomorphisms are maps between bordism groups that change both the dimension and the tangential structure. We give a completely general account of Smith homomorphisms, unifying the many examples in the literature. We provide three definitions of Smith homomorphisms, including as maps of Thom spectra, and show they are equivalent. Using this, we identify the cofiber of the spectrum-level Smith map and extend the Smith homomorphism to a long exact sequence of bordism groups, which is a powerful computation tool. We discuss several examples of this long exact sequence, relating them to known constructions such as Wood's and Wall's sequences. Furthermore, taking Anderson duals yields a long exact sequence of invertible field theories, which has a rich physical interpretation. We developed the theory in this paper with applications in mind to symmetry breaking in quantum field theory, which we study in a companion paper.

Bosonization and Anomaly Indicators of (2+1)-D Fermionic Topological Orders

We provide a mathematical proposal for the anomaly indicators of symmetries of (2+1)-d fermionic topological orders, and work out the consequences of our proposal in several nontrivial examples. Our proposal is an invariant of a super modular tensor category with a fermionic group action, which gives a (3+1)-d topological field theory (TFT) that we conjecture to be invertible; the anomaly indicators are partition functions of this TFT on $4$-manifolds generating the corresponding twisted spin bordism group. Our construction relies on a bosonization construction due to Gaiotto-Kapustin and Tata-Kobayashi-Bulmash-Barkeshli, together with a ``bosonization conjecture'' which we explain in detail. In the second half of the paper, we discuss several examples of our invariants relevant to condensed-matter physics. The most important example we consider is $\mathbb{Z}/4^T\times \mathbb{Z}/2^f$ time-reversal symmetry with symmetry algebra $\mathcal T^2 = (-1)^FC$, which many fermionic topological orders enjoy, including the $\mathrm{U}(1)_5$ spin Chern-Simons theory. Using newly developed tools involving the Smith long exact sequence, we calculate the cobordism group that classifies its anomaly, present the generating manifold, and calculate the partition function on the generating manifold which serves as our anomaly indicator. Our approach allows us to reproduce anomaly indicators known in the literature with simpler proofs, including $\mathbb{Z}/4^{Tf}$ time-reversal symmetry with symmetry algebra $\mathcal T^2 = (-1)^F$, and other symmetry groups in the 10-fold way involving Lie group symmetries.

Global anomalies & bordism of non-supersymmetric strings

The three tachyon-free non-supersymmetric string theories in ten dimensions provide a handle on quantum gravity away from the supersymmetric lamppost. However, they have not been shown to be fully consistent; although local anomalies cancel due to versions of the Green-Schwarz mechanism, there could be global anomalies, not cancelled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism, that could become fatal pathologies. We compute the twisted string bordism groups that control these anomalies via the Adams spectral sequence, showing that they vanish completely in two out of three cases (Sugimoto and $SO(16)^2$) and showing a partial vanishing also in the third (Sagnotti 0'B model). We also compute lower-dimensional bordism groups of the non-supersymmetric string theories, which are of interest to the classification of branes in these theories via the Cobordism Conjecture. We propose a worldvolume content based on anomaly inflow for the $SO(16)^2$ NS5-brane, and discuss subtleties related to the torsion part of the Bianchi identity. As a byproduct of our techniques and analysis, we also reprove that the outer $\mathbb{Z}_2$ automorphism swapping the two $E_8$ factors in the supersymmetric heterotic string is also non-anomalous.

A Long Exact Sequence in Symmetry Breaking: order parameter constraints, defect anomaly-matching, and higher Berry phases

We study defects in symmetry breaking phases, such as domain walls, vortices, and hedgehogs. In particular, we focus on the localized gapless excitations which sometimes occur at the cores of these objects. These are topologically protected by an 't Hooft anomaly. We classify different symmetry breaking phases in terms of the anomalies of these defects, and relate them to the anomaly of the broken symmetry by an anomaly-matching formula. We also derive the obstruction to the existence of a symmetry breaking phase with a local defect. We obtain these results using a long exact sequence of groups of invertible field theories, which we call the "symmetry breaking long exact sequence" (SBLES). The mathematical backbone of the SBLES is studied in a companion paper. Our work further develops the theory of higher Berry phase and its bulk-boundary correspondence, and serves as a new computational tool for classifying symmetry protected topological phases.

Adams spectral sequences for non-vector-bundle Thom spectra

When $R$ is one of the spectra $\mathit{ku}$, $\mathit{ko}$, $\mathit{tmf}$, $\mathit{MTSpin}^c$, $\mathit{MTSpin}$, or $\mathit{MTString}$, there is a standard approach to computing twisted $R$-homology groups of a space $X$ with the Adams spectral sequence, by using a change-of-rings isomorphism to simplify the $E_2$-page. This approach requires the assumption that the twist comes from a vector bundle, i.e. the twist map $X\to B\mathrm{GL}_1(R)$ factors through $B\mathrm{O}$. We show this assumption is unnecessary by working with Baker-Lazarev's Adams spectral sequence of $R$-modules and computing its $E_2$-page for a large class of twists of these spectra. We then work through two example computations motivated by anomaly cancellation for supergravity theories.

Bordism for the 2-group symmetries of the heterotic and CHL strings

In the presence of a nonzero B-field, the symmetries of the $\mathrm E_8\times \mathrm E_8$ heterotic string form a 2-group, or a categorified group, as do the symmetries of the CHL string. We express the bordism groups of the corresponding tangential structures as twisted string bordism groups, then compute them through dimension 11 modulo a few unresolved ambiguities. Then, we use these bordism groups to study anomalies and defects for these two string theories.

The Chronicles of IIBordia: Dualities, Bordisms, and the Swampland

In this work we investigate the Swampland Cobordism Conjecture in the context of type IIB string theory geometries with non-trivial duality bundle. Quite remarkably, we find that many non-trivial bordism classes with duality bundles in Mp$(2,\mathbb{Z})$, a double cover of SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ related to fermions, correspond to asymptotic boundaries of well-known supersymmetric F-theory backgrounds. These include $[p,q]$-7-branes, non-Higgsable clusters, S-folds, as well as various lower-dimensional generalizations. These string theoretic objects break the global symmetries associated to the non-trivial bordism groups, providing a strong test of the Cobordism Conjecture. Further including worldsheet orientation reversal promotes the duality group to the Pin$^+$ cover of GL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The corresponding bordism groups require a new non-supersymmetric "reflection 7-brane" and its compactifications to ensure the absence of global symmetries, thus providing an interesting prediction of the Cobordism Conjecture for non-supersymmetric type IIB backgrounds. A major component of the present work is the explicit derivation of the involved bordism groups as well as their generators, which correspond to asymptotic boundaries of explicit string theory backgrounds. The main tool is the Adams spectral sequence, to which we provide a detailed introduction. We anticipate that the same techniques can be applied in a wide variety of settings.
