Stability of Superflow for Ultracold Fermions in Optical Lattices

Motivated by recent observations of superfluidity of ultracold fermions in optical lattices, we investigate the stability of superfluid flow of paired fermions in the lowest band of a strong optical lattice. For fillings close to one fermion per site, we show that superflow breaks down via a dynamical instability leading to a transient density wave. At lower fillings, there is a distinct dynamical instability, where the superfluid stiffness becomes negative; this evolves, with increasing pairing interaction, from the fermion pair breaking instability to the well-known dynamical instability of lattice bosons. Our most interesting finding is the existence of a transition, over a range of fillings close to one fermion per site, from the fermion depairing instability to the density wave instability as the strength of the pairing interaction is increased.

Self-consistent slave rotor mean field theory for strongly correlated systems

Building on work by Florens and Georges, we formulate and study a self-consistent slave rotor mean field theory for strongly correlated systems. This approach views the electron, in the strong correlation regime, as a composite of a neutral spinon and a charged rotor field. We solve the coupled spinon-rotor model self-consistently using a cluster mean field theory for the rotors and various ansatzes for the spinon ground state. We illustrate this approach with a number of examples relevant to ongoing experiments in strongly correlated electronic systems such as: (i) the phase diagram of the isotropic triangular lattice organic Mott insulators, (ii) quasiparticle excitations and tunneling asymmetry in the weakly doped cuprate superconductors, and (iii) the cyclotron mass of carriers in commensurate spin-density wave and U(1) staggered flux (or d-density wave) normal states of the underdoped cuprates. We compare the estimated cyclotron mass with results from recent quantum oscillation experiments on ortho-II YBCO by N. Doiron-Leyraud et al (Nature 447, 565 [2007]) which appear to find hole pockets in the magnetic field induced normal state. We comment on the relation of this normal ground state to Fermi arcs seen in photoemission experiments above Tc. This slave rotor mean field theory can be generalized to study inhomogeneous states and strongly interacting models relevant to ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Exotic phase diagram of a cluster charging model of bosons on the kagome lattice

We study a model of hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice with short-range hopping ($t$) and repulsive interactions ($V$). This model directly maps on to an easy-axis $S=1/2$ XXZ model on the kagome lattice and is also related, at large $V/t$, to a quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice. Using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) numerics, we map out the phase diagram of this model at half-filling. At T=0, we show that this model exhibits a superfluid phase at small $V/t$ and an insulating phase at large $V/t$, separated by a continuous quantum phase transition at $V_c/t \approx 19.8$. The insulating phase at T=0 appears to have no conventional broken symmetries, and is thus a uniform Mott insulator (a `spin liquid' in magnetic language). We characterize this insulating phase as a uniform $Z_2$ fractionalized insulator from the topological order in the ground state and estimate its vison gap. Consistent with this identification, there is no apparent thermal phase transition upon heating the insulator. The insulating phase instead smoothly crosses over into the high temperature paramagnet via an intermediate cooperative paramagnetic regime. We also study the superfluid-to-normal thermal transition for $V < V_c$. We find that this is a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at small $V/t$ but changes to a first order transition for $V$ closer to $V_c$. We argue that this first order thermal transition is consistent with the presence of a nearby $Z_2$ insulating ground state obtained from the superfluid ground state by condensing double vortices.

SU(N) quantum spin models: A variational wavefunction study

The study of SU(N) quantum spin models is relevant to a variety of physical systems including ultracold atoms in optical lattices, and also leads to insights into novel quantum phases and phase transitions of SU(2) spin models. We use Gutzwiller projected fermionic variational wavefunctions to explore the phase diagram and correlation functions of SU(N) spin models in the self-conjugate representation, with Heisenberg bilinear and biquadratic interactions. In 1D, the variational phase diagram of the SU(4) spin chain is constructed by examining instabilities of the Gutzwiller projected free fermion ground state to various broken symmetries, and it agrees well with exact results. The spin and dimer correlations of the Gutzwiller projected free fermion state with N flavors of fermions are also in good agreement with exact and 1/N calculations for the critical points of SU(N) spin chains. In 2D, the variational phase diagram on the square lattice is obtained by studying instabilities of the Gutzwiller projected pi-flux state. The variational ground state of the pure Heisenberg model is found to exhibit long range Neel order for N=2,4 and spin Peierls order for N > 4. For N=4 and 6, biquadratic interactions lead to a complex phase diagram which includes an extended valence bond crystal in both cases, as well as a stable pi-flux phase for N=6. The spin correlations of the projected pi-flux state at N=4 are in good agreement with 1/N calculations. We find that this state also shows strongly enhanced dimer correlations, in qualitative accord with the large-N results. We compare our results with a recent QMC study of the SU(4) Heisenberg model.

BCS-BEC crossover on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice

The attractive Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice exhibits, at half-filling, a quantum critical point (QCP) between a semimetal with massless Dirac fermions and an s-wave superconductor (SC). We study the BCS-BEC crossover in this model away from half-filling at zero temperature and show that the appropriately defined crossover line (in the interaction-density plane) passes through the QCP at half-filling. For a range of densities around half-filling, the ``underlying Fermi surface'' of the SC, defined as the momentum space locus of minimum energy quasiparticle excitations, encloses an area which evolves nonmonotonically with interactions. We also study fluctuations in the SC and the semimetal, and show the emergence of an undamped Leggett mode deep in the SC. We consider possible implications for experiments on ultracold atoms and high temperature SCs.

Excitations in correlated superfluids near a continuous transition into a supersolid

We study a superfluid on a lattice close to a transition into a supersolid phase and show that a uniform superflow in the homogeneous superfluid can drive the roton gap to zero. This leads to supersolid order around the vortex core in the superfluid, with the size of the modulated pattern around the core being related to the bulk superfluid density and roton gap. We also study the electronic tunneling density of states for a uniform superconductor near a phase transition into a supersolid phase. Implications are considered for strongly correlated superconductors.

Effect of local charge fluctuations on spin physics in the Neel state of La$_2$CuO$_4$

We explore the effect of local charge fluctuations on the spin response of a Mott insulator by deriving an effective spin model, and studying it using Schwinger boson mean field theory. Applying this to La$_2$CuO$_4$, we show that an accurate fit to the magnon dispersion relation, measured by Coldea {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 5377 (2001)] is obtained with Hubbard model parameters $U \approx 2.34 eV$, and $t \approx 360 meV$. These parameters lead to estimates of the staggered magnetization ($m_s \approx 0.25$), spin wave velocity ($c\approx 800 meV$-Å), and spin stiffness ($ρ_s \approx 24 meV$). In particular the staggered moment as well as the effective local moment are renormalized to smaller values compared to the Heisenberg model due to local charge fluctuations in the Hubbard model. The dynamical structure factor shows considerable weight in the continuum along the zone boundary as well as secondary peaks that may be observed in high resolution neutron scattering experiments.

High Tc Superconductors -- A Variational Theory of the Superconducting State

We use a variational approach to gain insight into the strongly correlated d-wave superconducting state of the high Tc cuprates at T=0. We show that strong correlations lead to qualitatively different trends in pairing and phase coherence: the pairing scale decreases monotonically with hole doping while the SC order parameter shows a non-monotonic dome. We obtain detailed results for the doping-dependence of a large number of experimentally observable quantities, including the chemical potential, coherence length, momentum distribution, nodal quasiparticle weight and dispersion, incoherent features in photoemission spectra, optical spectral weight and superfluid density. Most of our results are in remarkable quantitative agreement with existing data and some of our predictions, first reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 217002 (2001), have been recently verified.

Extending Luttinger's theorem to Z(2) fractionalized phases of matter

Luttinger's theorem for Fermi liquids equates the volume enclosed by the Fermi surface in momentum space to the electron filling, independent of the strength and nature of interactions. Motivated by recent momentum balance arguments that establish this result in a non-perturbative fashion [M. Oshikawa, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 3370 (2000)], we present extensions of this momentum balance argument to exotic systems which exhibit quantum number fractionalization focussing on $Z_2$ fractionalized insulators, superfluids and Fermi liquids. These lead to nontrivial relations between the particle filling and some intrinsic property of these quantum phases, and hence may be regarded as natural extensions of Luttinger's theorem. We find that there is an important distinction between fractionalized states arising naturally from half filling versus those arising from integer filling. We also note how these results can be useful for identifying fractionalized states in numerical experiments.

Nodal Quasiparticle Dispersion in Strongly Correlated d-wave Superconductors

We analyze the effects of a momentum-dependent self-energy on the photoemission momentum distribution curve (MDC) lineshape, dispersion and linewidth. We illustrate this general analysis by a detailed examination of nodal quasiparticles in high Tc cuprates. We use variational results for the nodal quasiparticle weight Z (which varies rapidly with hole doping x) and the low energy Fermi velocity $v_F^{low}$ (which is independent of x), to show that the high energy MDC dispersion $v_{high} = v_F^{low}/Z$, so that it is much larger than the bare (band structure) velocity and also increases strongly with underdoping. We also present arguments for why the low energy Fermi velocity and the high energy dispersion are independent of the bare band structure at small x. All of these results are in good agreement with earlier and recent photoemission data [Zhou et al, Nature 423, 398 (2003)].

Fractionalization in Spin Liquid Mott Insulators: Vison Wavefunctions and Gaps

We study fractionalization in a spin-liquid Mott insulator defined by a Gutzwiller projected BCS state |0> at half-filling. We construct a trial vison (Z2 vortex) state |V> by projecting an hc/2e vortex and determine when it is orthogonal to |0>. Using a combination of analytical arguments and Monte Carlo calculations we show that generically the spin-liquid is Z2 fractionalized. For microscopic parameters appropriate for high Tc cuprates, we estimate that the vison gap Ev << J, consistent with recent experimental bounds, due to proximity to the bipartite symmetric point where Ev = 0.

XY ring-exchange model on the triangular lattice

We study ring-exchange models for bosons or XY-spins on the triangular lattice. A four-spin exchange leads to a manifold of ground states with gapless excitations and critical power-law correlations. With a nearest-neighbour exchange, fluctuations select a four-fold ferrimagnetically ordered ground state with a small spin/superfluid stiffness which breaks the global U(1) and translational symmetry. We explore consequences for phase transitions at finite temperature and in an in-plane magnetic field.

Experimental implications of quantum phase fluctuations in layered superconductors

I study the effect of quantum and thermal phase fluctuations on the in-plane and c-axis superfluid stiffness of layered d-wave superconductors. First, I show that quantum phase fluctuations in the superconductor can be damped in the presence of external screening of Coulomb interactions, and suggest an experiment to test the importance of these fluctuations, by placing a metal in close proximity to the superconductor to induce such screening. Second, I show that a combination of quantum phase fluctuations and the linear temperature dependence of the in-plane superfluid stiffness leads to a linear temperature dependence of the c-axis penetration depth, below a temperature scale determined by the magnitude of in-plane dissipation.

Fermi liquid interactions and the superfluid density in d-wave superconductors

We construct a phenomenological superfluid Fermi liquid theory for a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor on a square lattice, and study the effect of quasiparticle interactions on the superfluid density. Using simple models for the dispersion and the Landau interaction function, we illustrate the deviation of these results from those for the isotropic superfluid. This allows us to reconcile the value and doping dependence of the superfluid density slope at low temperature obtained from penetration depth measurements, with photoemission data on nodal quasiparticles.

Ring exchange, the Bose metal, and bosonization in two dimensions

Motivated by the high-T_c cuprates, we consider a model of bosonic Cooper pairs moving on a square lattice via ring exchange. We show that this model offers a natural middle ground between a conventional antiferromagnetic Mott insulator and the fully deconfined fractionalized phase which underlies the spin-charge separation scenario for high-T_c superconductivity. We show that such ring models sustain a stable critical phase in two dimensions, the *Bose metal*. The Bose metal is a compressible state, with gapless but uncondensed boson and ``vortex'' excitations, power-law superconducting and charge-ordering correlations, and broad spectral functions. We characterize the Bose metal with the aid of an exact plaquette duality transformation, which motivates a universal low energy description of the Bose metal. This description is in terms of a pair of dual bosonic phase fields, and is a direct analog of the well-known one-dimensional bosonization approach. We verify the validity of the low energy description by numerical simulations of the ring model in its exact dual form. The relevance to the high-T_c superconductors and a variety of extensions to other systems are discussed, including the bosonization of a two dimensional fermionic ring model.

Projected Wavefunctions and High Temperature Superconductivity

We study the Hubbard model with parameters relevant to the cuprates, using variational Monte Carlo with projected d-wave states. For doping 0 < x < 0.35 we obtain a superconductor whose order parameter tracks the observed nonmonotonic Tc(x). The variational parameter Delta_{var}(x) scales with the (pi,0) ``hump'' and T* seen in photoemission. Projection leads to incoherence in the spectral function, and from the singular behavior of its moments we obtain the nodal quasiparticle weight Z which vanishes linearly in x, though the Fermi velocity remains finite as x approaches zero. The Drude weight D_{low} and superfluid density are consistent with experiments, and D_{low} scales with Z.

Effective Actions and Phase Fluctuations in d-wave Superconductors

We study effective actions for order parameter fluctuations at low temperature in layered d-wave superconductors such as the cuprates. The order parameter lives on the bonds of a square lattice and has two amplitude and two phase modes associated with it. The low frequency spectral weights for amplitude and relative phase fluctuations is determined and found to be subdominant to quasiparticle contributions. The Goldstone phase mode and its coupling to density fluctuations in charged systems is treated in a gauge-invariant manner. The Gaussian phase action is used to study both the $c$-axis Josephson plasmon and the more conventional in-plane plasmon in the cuprates. We go beyond the Gaussian theory by deriving a coarse-grained quantum XY model, which incorporates important cutoff effects overlooked in previous studies. A variational analysis of this effective model shows that in the cuprates, quantum effects of phase fluctuations are important in reducing the zero temperature superfluid stiffness, but thermal effects are small for $T << T_c$.

Quasiparticles and Phase Fluctuations in High Tc Superconductors

We argue based on theoretical considerations and analysis of experimental data that quasiparticle excitations near the nodes determine the low temperature properties in the superconducting state of cuprates. Quantum effects of phase fluctuations are shown to be quantitatively important, but thermal effects are small for $T \ll T_c$. An anisotropic superfluid Fermi liquid phenomenology is presented for the effect of quasiparticle interactions on the temperature and doping dependence of the low $T$ penetration depth.
