Spectroscopic study of CEMP-(s & r/s) stars- Revisiting classification criteria and formation scenarios, highlighting i-process nucleosynthesis

We have derived the stellar atmospheric parameters, the effective temperature T$_{eff}$, the microturbulent velocity $ζ$, the surface gravity log g, and the metallicity [Fe/H] for HE 0017+0055, HE 2144-1832, HE 2339-0837, HD 145777, and CD-27 14351 from local thermodynamic equilibrium analyses using model atmospheres. Elemental abundances of C, N, $α$-elements, iron-peak elements, and several neutron-capture elements are estimated using the equivalent width measurement technique as well as spectrum synthesis calculations in some cases. In the context of the double enhancement observed in four of the programme stars, we have critically examined whether the literature i-process model yields ([X/Fe]) of heavy elements can explain the observed abundance distribution. The estimated metallicity [Fe/H] of the programme stars ranges from -1.63 to -2.74. All five stars show enhanced abundance for Ba, and four of them exhibit enhanced abundance for Eu. Based on our analysis, HE 0017+0055, HE 2144-1832, and HE 2339-0837 are found to be CEMP-r/s stars, whereas HD 145777 and CD-27 14351 show characteristic properties of CEMP-s stars. From a detailed analysis of different classifiers of CEMP stars, using a large sample of similar stars from the literature, we have identified the one which best describes the CEMP-s and CEMP-r/s stars. We have also examined if [hs/ls] alone can be used as a classifier, and if there are any limiting values for [hs/ls] ratio that can be used to distinguish CEMP-s and CEMP-r/s stars. In spite of peaking at different values of [hs/ls], CEMP-s and CEMP-r/s stars show an overlap in the range 0.0 < [hs/ls] < 1.5 and hence this ratio alone can not be used to distinguish CEMP-s and CEMP-r/s stars.

Probing the Galactic s-process nucleosynthesis using barium stars

The origin and evolution of neutron-capture elements in our Galaxy is poorly understood. In this work, we have attempted to understand the Galactic s-process nucleosynthesis using barium stars as probes. We have performed high resolution spectroscopic analysis for three barium stars HD 36650, HD 207585 and HD 219116. The analysis of HD 219116 is based on HCT/HESP data at a resolution of 60,000 covering a wavelength region 3530-9970 {\rm Å}. For HD 36650, we have used the FEROS spectrum at a resolution of 48,000 covering the wavelength region 3520-9200 {\rm Å}. For HD 207585, the spectrum from VLT/UVES at a resolution of 48,000 covering the wavelength region 3290-6650 {\rm Å} is used. Our analysis clearly shows that the surface chemical composition of these barium stars are enriched by s-process nucleosynthesis products coming from their former companion low-mass AGB stars. A discussion on the distribution of abundance ratios based on the existing nucleosynthesis theories is presented.

i-process nucleosynthesis: observational evidences from CEMP stars

The surface chemical compositions of a large fraction of Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars, the so-called CEMP-r/s stars, are known to exhibit enhancement of both s- and r-process elements. For these stars, the heavy element abundances cannot be explained either by s-process or r-process nucleosynthesis alone, as the production sites of s- and r-process elements are very different, and these two processes produce distinct abundance patterns. Thus, the observational evidence of the double enhancement seen in CEMP-r/s stars remains a puzzle as far as the origin of the elements is concerned. In this work, we have critically analysed the observed abundances of heavy elements in a sample of eight CEMP-r/s stars from literature, to trace the origin of the observed double enhancement. Towards this, we have conducted a parametric-model based analysis to delineate the contributions of s- and r-process nucleosynthesis to the observed elemental abundances. We have further examined if the i-process (intermediate process) nucleosynthesis, that occurs at a high neutron-density (n$\sim$10$^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$ ) produced during proton-ingestion from a H-rich envelope to the intershell region of an AGB star, that is capable of producing both r- and s-process elements in a single stellar site, could explain the observed abundance patterns of the sample stars. Our analysis shows that the observed abundance patterns of the selected sample of CEMP-r/s stars could be fairly well reproduced using the i-process model yields.

[Rb/Zr] ratio in Ba stars as diagnostics of the companion AGB stellar mass

Understanding the nucleosynthesis and evolution of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars is of primary importance as they are the main producers of some of the key elements in the Universe. They are the predominant sites for the slow neutron-capture nucleosynthesis. The exact physical conditions and nucleosynthetic processes occuring at the interior of AGB stars are not clearly understood, that hinders a better understanding of the contribution of these stars to the Galactic chemical enrichment. The extrinsic stars, which are known to have received products of AGB phase of evolution via binary mass transfer mechanisms, form vital tools to trace the AGB nucleosynthesis. The [Rb/Zr] ratio is an important diagnostic to understand the average neutron density at the s-process site and provide important clues to the mass of the companion AGB stars. In this work we have presented the estimate of [Rb/Zr] ratios, based on the high resolution spectroscopic analysis for a sample of Ba stars, and discussed how it can be used to understand the characteristics of the AGB star. Results from an analysis based on parametric model to confirm the mass of the companion AGB star are also presented.

Characterizing the companion AGBs using surface chemical composition of barium stars

Barium stars are one of the important probes to understand the origin and evolution of slow neutron-capture process elements in the Galaxy. These are extrinsic stars, where the observed s-process element abundances are believed to have an origin in the now invisible companions that produced these elements at their Asymptotic Giant Branch phase of evolution. We have attempted to understand the s-process nucleosynthesis, as well as the physical properties of the companion stars through a detailed comparison of observed elemental abundances of 10 barium stars with the predictions from AGB nucleosynthesis models, FRUITY. For these stars, we have presented estimates of abundances of several elements, C, N, O, Na, Al, $α$-elements, Fe-peak elements and neutron-capture elements Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu. The abundance estimates are based on high resolution spectral analysis. Observations of Rb in four of these stars have allowed us to put a limit to the mass of the companion AGB stars. Our analysis clearly shows that the former companions responsible for the surface abundance peculiarities of these stars are low-mass AGB stars. Kinematic analysis have shown the stars to be members of Galactic disk population.

Chemical analysis of CH stars - III: Atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances

Elemental abundances of CH stars can provide observational constraints for theoretical studies on the nucleosynthesis and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars. However, available abundance data in literature are quite scanty. In our pursuit to generate a homogeneous database of elemental abundances of CH stars we have performed a detailed chemical abundance study for a sample of 12 potential CH star candidates based on high resolution spectroscopy. We present first time abundance analysis for the objects HE 0308-1612, CD-28 1082, HD 30443, and HD 87853. For the other objects, although limited information is available, detailed chemical composition studies are missing. Our analysis shows CD-28 1082 to be a very metal-poor object with [Fe/H] = -2.45 and enriched in carbon with [C/Fe] = 2.19. With a ratio of [Ba/Eu] ~ 0.02 the star satisfies the classification criteria of a CEMP-r/s star. The objects CD-38 2151 with [Fe/H] = -2.03 and HD 30443 with [Fe/H] ~ -1.68 are found to show the characteristic properties of CH stars. HE 0308-1612 and HD 87853 are found to be moderately metal-poor with [Fe/H]~ -0.73; while HE 0308-1612 is moderately enhanced with carbon ([C/Fe] ~ 0.78) and shows the spectral properties of CH stars, the abundance of carbon could not be estimated for HD 87853. Among the two moderately metal-poor objects, HD 87080 ([Fe/H] = -0.48) shows near solar carbon abundance, and HD 176021 ([Fe/H] = -0.63) is mildly enhanced in carbon with [C/Fe] = 0.52. HD 176021 along with HD 202020 a known binary, exhibit the characteristic properties of CH stars as far as the heavy element abundances are concerned. Five objects in our sample show spectral properties that are normally seen in barium stars.

Chemical analysis of three barium stars: HD 51959, HD 88035, HD 121447

We present elemental abundance results from high resolution spectral analysis of three nitrogen-enhanced barium stars. The analysis is based on spectra obtained with the FEROS attached to 1.52m telescope at ESO, Chile. The spectral resolution is R~48000 and the spectral coverage spans from 3500-9000Å\,. For the objects HD 51959 and HD 88035, we present the first time abundance analyses results. Although a few studies are available in literature on the object HD 121447, the results are significantly different from each other. We have therefore carried out a detailed chemical composition study for this object based on a high resolution spectrum with high S/N ratio, for a better understanding of the origin of the abundance patterns observed in this star. Stellar atmospheric parameters, the effective temperature, surface gravity, microturbulence and metallicity of the stars are determined from the LTE analysis using model atmospheres. The metallicity of HD 51959 and HD 88035 are found to be near-solar; they exhibit enhanced abundances of neutron-capture elements. HD 121447 is found to be moderately metal-poor with [Fe/H]=-0.65. While carbon is near-solar in the other two objects, HD 121447 shows carbon enhancement at a level, [C/Fe]=0.82. Neutron-capture elements are highly enhanced with [X/Fe]>2 (X: Ba, La, Pr, Nd, Sm) in this object. The alpha- and iron-peak elements show abundances very similar to field giants with the same metallicity. From kinematic analysis all the three objects are found to be members of thin disk population with a high probability of 0.99, 0.99 and 0.92 for HD 51959, HD 88035 and HD 121447 respectively.

Chemical analysis of a carbon-enhanced very metal-poor star: CD-27 14351

We present the first time abundance analysis of a very metal-poor carbon-enhanced star CD-27 14351 based on a high resolution (R ~ 48000) FEROS spectrum. Our abundance analysis performed using Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) model atmospheres shows that the object is a cool star with stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperature Teff = 4335 K, surface gravity log g = 0.5, microturbulence = 2.42 km/s, and, metallicity [Fe/H] = -2.6. The star exhibits high carbon and nitrogen abundances with [C/Fe] = 2.89 and [N/Fe] = 1.89. Overabundances of neutron-capture elements are evident in Ba, La, Ce, and Nd with estimated [X/Fe] > 1, the largest enhancement being seen in Ce with [Ce/Fe] = 2.63. While the first peak s-process elements Sr and Y are found to be enhanced with respect to Fe, ([Sr/Fe] = 1.73 and [Y/Fe] = 1.91) the third peak s-process element Pb could not be detected in our spectrum at the given resolution. Europium, primarily a r-process element also shows an enhancement with [Eu/Fe] = 1.65. With [Ba/Eu] = 0.12 the object CD-27 14351 satisfies the classification criterion for CEMP-r/s star. The elemental abundance distributions observed in this star is discussed in light of chemical abundances observed in other CEMP stars from literature.

Abundance analysis of s-process enhanced barium stars

Detailed chemical composition studies of stars with enhanced abundances of neutron-capture elements can provide observational constraints for neutron-capture nucleosynthesis studies and clues for understanding their contribution to the Galactic chemical enrichment. We present abundance results from high-resolution spectral analyses of a sample of four chemically peculiar stars characterized by s-process enhancement. High-Resolution spectra (R ~ 42000) of these objects spanning a wavelength range from 4000 to 6800 A, are taken from the ELODIE archive. We have estimated the stellar atmospheric parameters, the effective temperature T_eff, the surface gravity log g, and metallicity [Fe/H] from local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis using model atmospheres. We report estimates of elemental abundances for several neutron-capture elements, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and Dy. While HD 49641 and HD 58368 show [Ba/Fe] > 1.16 the other two objects HD 119650 and HD 191010 are found to be mild barium stars with [Ba/Fe] ~ 0.4. The derived abundances of the elements are interpreted on the basis of existing theories for understanding their origin and evolution.

Subaru/HDS study of CH stars: elemental abundances for stellar neutron-capture process studies

A comprehensive abundance analysis providing rare insight into the chemical history of lead stars is still lacking. We present results from high resolution (R ~ 50000), spectral analyses of three CH stars, HD 26, HD 198269, HD 224959, and, a carbon star with a dusty envelope, HD 100764. Previous studies on these objects are limited by both resolution and wavelength regions and the results differ significantly from each other. We have undertaken to re-analyse the chemical composition of these objects based on high resolution Subaru spectra covering the wavelength regions 4020 to 6775 A,. Considering local thermodynamic equilibrium and using model atmospheres, we have derived the stellar parameters, the effective temperatures Teff, surface gravities log g, and metallicities [Fe/H] for these objects. The derived parameters for HD 26, HD 100764, HD 198269 and HD 224959 are (5000, 1.6, -1.13), (4750, 2.0 -0.86), (4500, 1.5, -2.06) and (5050, 2.1, -2.44) respectively. The stars are found to exhibit large enhancements of heavy elements relative to iron in conformity to previous studies. Large enhancement of Pb with respect to iron is also confirmed. Updates on the elemental abundances for several s-process elements (Y, Zr, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Pb) along with the first-time estimates of abundances for a number of other heavy elements (Sr, Ba, Pr, Eu, Er, W) are reported. Our analysis suggests that neutron-capture elements in HD 26 primarily originate in s-process while the major contributions to the abundances of neutron-capture elements in the more metal-poor objects HD 224959 and HD 198269 are from r-process, possibly formed from materials that are pre-enriched with products of r-process.

Chemical analysis of CH stars - II: atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances

We present detailed chemical analyses for a sample of twelve stars selected from the CH star catalogue of Bartkevicius (1996). The sample includes two confirmed binaries, four objects that are known to show radial velocity variations and the rest with no information on the binary status. A primary objective is to examine if all these objects exhibit chemical abundances characteristics of CH stars, based on detailed chemical composition study using high resolution spectra. We have used high resolution (R ~ 42000) spectra from the ELODIE archive. These spectra cover 3900 to 6800 Angstrom in the wavelength range. We have estimated the stellar atmospheric parameters, the effective temperature Teff, the surface gravity log g, and metallicity [Fe/H] from LTE analysis using model atmospheres. Estimated temperatures of these objects cover a wide range from 4200 K to 6640 K, the surface gravity from 0.6 to 4.3 and metallicity from -0.13 to -1.5. We report updates on elemental abundances for several heavy elements, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and Dy. For the object HD 89668 we present the first abundance analyses results. Enhancement of heavy elements relative to Fe, a characteristic property of CH stars is evident from our analyses in case of four objects, HD 92545, HD 104979, HD 107574 and HD 204613. A parametric model based study is performed to understand the relative contributions from the s- and r-process to the abundances of the heavy elements.

Chemical analysis of CH stars - I: atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances

Results from high-resolution spectral analyses of a selected sample of CH stars are presented. Detailed chemical composition studies of these objects, which could reveal abundance patterns that in turn provide information regarding nucleosynthesis and evolutionary status, are scarce in the literature. We conducted detailed chemical composition studies for these objects based on high resolution (R ~ 42000) spectra. The spectra were taken from the ELODIE archive and cover the wavelength range from 3900 to 6800 A, in the wavelength range. We estimated the stellar atmospheric parameters, the effective temperature Teff, the surface gravity log g, and metallicity [Fe/H] from Local thermodynamic equilibrium analyses using model atmospheres. Estimated temperatures of these objects cover a wide range from 4550 K to 6030 K, the surface gravity from 1.8 to 3.8 and metallicity from -0.18 to -1.4. We report updates on elemental abundances for several heavy elements and present estimates of abundance ratios of Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and Dy with respect to Fe. For the object HD 188650 we present the first abundance analyses results based on a high resolution spectrum. Enhancements of heavy elements relative to Fe, that are characteristic of CH stars are evident from our analyses for most of the objects. A parametric model based study is performed to understand the relative contributions from the s- and r-processes to the abundances of the heavy elements.

Identification of metal-poor stars using the artificial neural network

Identification of metal-poor stars among field stars is extremely useful for studying the structure and evolution of the Galaxy and of external galaxies. We search for metal-poor stars using the artificial neural network (ANN) and extend its usage to determine absolute magnitudes. We have constructed a library of 167 medium-resolution stellar spectra (R ~ 1200) covering the stellar temperature range of 4200 to 8000 K, log g range of 0.5 to 5.0, and [Fe/H] range of -3.0 to +0.3 dex. This empirical spectral library was used to train ANNs, yielding an accuracy of 0.3 dex in [Fe/H], 200 K in temperature, and 0.3 dex in log g. We found that the independent calibrations of near-solar metallicity stars and metal-poor stars decreases the errors in T_eff and log g by nearly a factor of two. We calculated T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H] on a consistent scale for a large number of field stars and candidate metal-poor stars. We extended the application of this method to the calibration of absolute magnitudes using nearby stars with well-estimated parallaxes. A better calibration accuracy for M_V could be obtained by training separate ANNs for cool, warm, and metal-poor stars. The current accuracy of M_V calibration is (+-)0.3 mag. A list of newly identified metal-poor stars is presented. The M_V calibration procedure developed here is reddening-independent and hence may serve as a powerful tool in studying galactic structure.

Subaru/HDS study of HE 1015-2050: Spectral evidence of R Coronae Borealis light decline

Hydrogen deficiency and a sudden optical light decline by about 6-8 mag are two principal characteristics of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. The high latitude carbon star HE 1015-2050 was identified as a hydrogen-deficient carbon star from low-resolution spectroscopy. Photometric data of the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey gathered between 2006 February and 2012 May indicate that the object exhibits no variability. However, a high-resolution (R ~ 50,000) optical spectrum of this object obtained with the 8.2m Subaru telescope using High Dispersion Spectrograph on the 2012 January 13 offers sufficient spectral evidences for the object being a cool HdC star of RCB type undergoing light decline. In contrast to the Na I D broad absorption features, seen in the low-resolution spectra on several occasions, the high-resolution spectrum exhibits Na I D2 and D1 features in emission. A few emission lines due to Mg I, Sc II, Ti I, Ti II, Fe II and Ba I are also observed in the spectrum of this object for the first time. Such emission features combined with neutral and singly ionized lines of Ca, Ti, Fe, etc., in absorption are reportedly seen in RCBs spectra in the early stage of decline or during the recovery to maximum. Further, the light decline of RCBs is ascribed to the formation of a cloud of soot that obscures the visible photosphere. Presence of such circumstellar material is evident from the polarimetric observations with an estimated V-band percentage polarization of ~1.7% for this object.

Polarimetric studies of carbon stars at high Galactic latitude

Very little is known about the polarimetric properties of CH stars and carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, although many of these objects have been studied in detail both photometrically and spectroscopically. We aim to derive polarimetric properties for a large sample of CEMP stars and CH stars to fill this gap. Multiband polarimetric observations were conducted in the first run for a sample of twenty-nine objects that include twenty-two CEMP and CH stars and seven polarization standards. Estimates of polarization were obtained using standard procedures of polarization calculation. Five objects in our sample do not show any significant polarization over the different colours of BVRI. For the rest of the objects the derived percentage polarization estimates are less than or equal to 1%, and they are found to exhibit random behaviour with respect to the inverse of the effective wavelength of observations. Polarization also does not seem to have any correlation with the effective temperatures of the stars. Our polarimetric estimates indicate there are circumstellar envelopes around these stars that are spherically symmetric or envelopes with little or no dust. In the plane of differential polarization, defined as the difference between the maximum and the minimum polarizations within the BVRI-bands, versus their visual magnitude, the stars appear to be confined to a narrow band. The implication of this trend for understanding the nature of the circumstellar environment remains to be determined and requires detailed modelling.

Spectroscopic characterization of FHLC stars from the Hamburg/ESO survey and a newly found HdC star

The sample of candidate faint high latitude carbon (FHLC) stars chosen from the Hamburg/ESO survey is a potential source to search for objects of rare types. From medium resolution spectral analyses of about 250 objects from this sample, the object HE 1015-2050, was found to be a hydrogen-deficient carbon (HdC) star. Apart from U Aquarii, HE 1015-2050 is the only example, till now, of a Galactic cool HdC star that is characterized by strong spectral features of light s-process element Sr, and weak features of heavy s-process elements such as Ba. This object, with its enhanced carbon and hydrogen-deficiency, together with anomalous s- process spectral features, poses a challenge as far as the understanding of its formation mechanism is concerned. We discuss possible mechanisms for its formation in the framework of existing scenarios of HdC star formation.
