Stable Models of superacceleration

We discuss an instability in a large class of models where dark energy is coupled to matter. In these models the mass of the scalar field is much larger than the expansion rate of the Universe. We find models in which this instability is absent, and show that these models generically predict an apparent equation of state for dark energy smaller than -1, i.e., superacceleration. These models have no acausal behavior or ghosts.

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis with Bound States of Long-lived Charged Particles

Charged particles (X) decaying after primordial nucleosynthesis are constrained by the requirement that their decay products should not change the light element abundances drastically. If the decaying particle is negatively charged (X-) then it will bind to the nuclei. We consider the effects of the decay of X when bound to Helium-4 and show that this will modify the Lithium abundances.

Discovering SUSY with $m_0^2 < 0$ in the First LHC Physics Run

In minimal supergravity, the parameter space where the slepton is the LSP is usually neglected, because of strong constraints on charged dark matter. When the gravitino is the true LSP, this region avoids these constraints and offers spectacular collider signals. We investigate this scenario for the LHC and find that a large portion of the ignored mSugra parameter space can lead to discovery within the first physics run, with 1-4 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of data. We find that there are regions where discovery is feasible with only 1 day of running.

Effective Dynamics of the Matrix Big Bang

We study the leading quantum effects in the recently introduced Matrix Big Bang model. This amounts to a study of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on the Milne orbifold. We find a one-loop potential that is attractive near the Big Bang. Surprisingly, the potential decays very rapidly at late times, where it appears to be generated by D-brane effects. Usually, general covariance constrains the form of any effective action generated by renormalization group flow. However, the form of our one-loop potential seems to violate these constraints in a manner that suggests a connection between the cosmological singularity and long wavelength, late time physics.

Collider Signatures of SuperWIMP Warm Dark Matter

SuperWeakly-Interacting Massive Particles (superWIMPs) produced in the late decays of other particles are well-motivated dark matter candidates and may be favored over standard Weakly-Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) by small scale structure observations. Among the most promising frameworks that incorporate superWIMPs are R-parity conserving supersymmetry models in which the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is the gravitino or the axino. In these well-defined particle models, astrophysical observations have direct implications for possible measurements at future colliders.

New Developments in Extra-dimensional Dark Matter

We summarize the main features of several dark matter candidates in extra-dimensional theories. In particular, we review Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons in universal extra dimensions and branons in brane-world models. KK gravitons are superWIMP (superweakly-interacting massive particle) dark matter, and branons are WIMP (weakly-interacting massive particle) dark matter. Both dark matter candidates are naturally produced in the correct amount to form much or all of dark matter.

Minimal Supergravity with m_0^2 < 0

We extend the parameter space of minimal supergravity to negative values of m_0^2, the universal scalar mass parameter defined at the grand unified scale. After evolving to the weak scale, all scalars can be non-tachyonic with masses consistent with collider constraints. This region of parameter space is typically considered excluded by searches for charged dark matter, since the lightest standard model superpartner is a charged slepton. However, if the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle, the charged slepton decays, and this region is allowed. This region provides qualitatively new possibilities for minimal supergravity, including spectra with light sleptons and very heavy squarks, and models in which the lightest slepton is the selectron. We show that the m_0^2 < 0 region is consistent with low energy precision data and discuss its implications for particle colliders. These models may provide signals of supersymmetry in even the first year of operation at the Large Hadron Collider.

SuperWIMP Solutions to Small Scale Structure Problems

Collisionless, cold dark matter in the form of weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs) is well-motivated in particle physics, naturally yields the observed relic density, and successfully explains structure formation on large scales. On small scales, however, it predicts too much power, leading to cuspy halos, dense cores, and large numbers of subhalos, in apparent conflict with observations. We consider superWIMP dark matter, produced with large velocity in late decays at times 10^5 s - 10^8 s. As analyzed by Kaplinghat in a more general setting, we find that superWIMPs have sufficiently large free-streaming lengths and low phase space densities to help resolve small scale structure problems while preserving all of the above-mentioned WIMP virtues.

High-Energy Scattering in Non-Commutative Field Theory

We analyze high energy scattering for non-commutative field theories using the dual gravity description. We find that the Froissart-Martin bound still holds, but that cross-sections stretch in the non-commutative directions in a way dependent on the infrared cutoff. This puzzling behavior suggests new aspects of UV/IR mixing.

On a supersymmetric completion of the $R^4$ term in type IIB supergravity

We examine the question of the supersymmetric completion of the $R^4$ term in type IIB supergravity by using superfield methods. We show that while there is an obstruction to constructing the full action, a subset of the terms in the action can be consistently analyzed independent of the other terms, and these can be obtained from the superfield. We find the complete type IIB action involving the curvature and five-form field strengths.

SuperWIMP Cosmology and Collider Physics

Dark matter may be composed of superWIMPs, superweakly-interacting massive particles produced in the late decays of other particles. We focus here on the well-motivated supersymmetric example of gravitino LSPs. Gravitino superWIMPs share several virtues with the well-known case of neutralino dark matter: they are present in the same supersymmetric frameworks (supergravity with R-parity conservation) and naturally have the desired relic density. In contrast to neutralinos, however, gravitino superWIMPs are impossible to detect by conventional dark matter searches, may explain an existing discrepancy in Big Bang nucleosynthesis, predict observable distortions in the cosmic microwave background, and imply spectacular signals at future particle colliders.

Probing Gravitational Interactions of Elementary Particles

The gravitational interactions of elementary particles are suppressed by the Planck scale M_P ~ 10^18 GeV and are typically expected to be far too weak to be probed by experiments. We show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, such interactions may be studied by particle physics experiments in the next few years. As an example, we consider conventional supergravity with a stable gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle. The next-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) decays to the gravitino through gravitational interactions after about a year. This lifetime can be measured by stopping NLSPs at colliders and observing their decays. Such studies will yield a measurement of Newton's gravitational constant on unprecedentedly small scales, shed light on dark matter, and provide a window on the early universe.

Revisiting D-branes in $AdS_3 \times S^3$

We find the most general supergravity solution in an $AdS^3 \times S^3$ background preserving an $AdS_2 \times S^2$ symmetry and half the supersymmetries. Contrary to previous expectations from boundary state arguments, it is shown that no solutions exist containing localized brane sources.

Newtonian Gravity in Theories with Inverse Powers of R

We discuss theories with inverse powers of the Ricci scalar. We find the exact metric produced by point masses in these theories, and show that the gravitational force between static objects is consistent with experiments.

SuperWIMP Dark Matter Signals from the Early Universe

Cold dark matter may be made of superweakly-interacting massive particles, superWIMPs, that naturally inherit the desired relic density from late decays of metastable WIMPs. Well-motivated examples are weak-scale gravitinos in supergravity and Kaluza-Klein gravitons from extra dimensions. These particles are impossible to detect in all dark matter experiments. We find, however, that superWIMP dark matter may be discovered through cosmological signatures from the early universe. In particular, superWIMP dark matter has observable consequences for Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and may explain the observed underabundance of 7Li without upsetting the concordance between deuterium and CMB baryometers. We discuss implications for future probes of CMB black body distortions and collider searches for new particles. In the course of this study, we also present a model-independent analysis of entropy production from late-decaying particles in light of WMAP data.

Graviton Cosmology in Universal Extra Dimensions

In models of universal extra dimensions, gravity and all standard model fields propagate in the extra dimensions. Previous studies of such models have concentrated on the Kaluza-Klein (KK) partners of standard model particles. Here we determine the properties of the KK gravitons and explore their cosmological implications. We find the lifetimes of decays to KK gravitons, of relevance for the viability of KK gravitons as dark matter. We then discuss the primordial production of KK gravitons after reheating. The existence of a tower of KK graviton states makes such production extremely efficient: for reheat temperature T_RH and d extra dimensions, the energy density stored in gravitons scales as T_RH^{2+3d/2}. Overclosure and Big Bang nucleosynthesis therefore stringently constrain T_RH in all universal extra dimension scenarios. At the same time, there is a window of reheat temperatures low enough to avoid these constraints and high enough to generate the desired thermal relic density for KK WIMP and superWIMP dark matter.

Superweakly Interacting Massive Particles

We investigate a new class of dark matter: superweakly-interacting massive particles (superWIMPs). As with conventional WIMPs, superWIMPs appear in well-motivated particle theories with naturally the correct relic density. In contrast to WIMPs, however, superWIMPs are impossible to detect in all conventional dark matter searches. We consider the concrete examples of gravitino and graviton cold dark matter in models with supersymmetry and universal extra dimensions, respectively, and show that superWIMP dark matter satisfies stringent constraints from Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background.
