Geometric and spectral properties of causal maps

We study the random planar map obtained from a critical, finite variance, Galton-Watson plane tree by adding the horizontal connections between successive vertices at each level. This random graph is closely related to the well-known causal dynamical triangulation that was introduced by Ambjørn and Loll and has been studied extensively by physicists. We prove that the horizontal distances in the graph are smaller than the vertical distances, but only by a subpolynomial factor: The diameter of the set of vertices at level $n$ is both $o(n)$ and $n^{1-o(1)}$. This enables us to prove that the spectral dimension of the infinite version of the graph is almost surely equal to 2, and consequently that the random walk is diffusive almost surely. We also initiate an investigation of the case in which the offspring distribution is critical and belongs to the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law for $α\in (1,2)$, for which our understanding is much less complete.

Hyperbolic and Parabolic Unimodular Random Maps

We show that for infinite planar unimodular random rooted maps, many global geometric and probabilistic properties are equivalent, and are determined by a natural, local notion of average curvature. This dichotomy includes properties relating to amenability, conformal geometry, random walks, uniform and minimal spanning forests, and Bernoulli bond percolation. We also prove that every simply connected unimodular random rooted map is sofic, that is, a Benjamini-Schramm limit of finite maps.

Uniform Spanning Forests of Planar Graphs

We prove that the free uniform spanning forest of any bounded degree proper plane graph is connected almost surely, answering a question of Benjamini, Lyons, Peres and Schramm. We provide a quantitative form of this result, calculating the critical exponents governing the geometry of the uniform spanning forests of transient proper plane graphs with bounded degrees and codegrees. We find that the same exponents hold universally over this entire class of graphs provided that measurements are made using the hyperbolic geometry of their circle packings rather than their usual combinatorial geometry.

The local limit of the uniform spanning tree on dense graphs

Let $G$ be a connected graph in which almost all vertices have linear degrees and let $T$ be a uniform spanning tree of $G$. For any fixed rooted tree $F$ of height $r$ we compute the asymptotic density of vertices $v$ for which the $r$-ball around $v$ in $T$ is isomorphic to $F$. We deduce from this that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of such graphs converging to a graphon $W$, then the uniform spanning tree of $G_n$ locally converges to a multi-type branching process defined in terms of $W$. As an application, we prove that in a graph with linear minimum degree, with high probability, the density of leaves in a uniform spanning tree is at least $1/e-o(1)$, the density of vertices of degree $2$ is at most $1/e+o(1)$ and the density of vertices of degree $k\geq 3$ is at most ${(k-2)^{k-2} \over (k-1)! e^{k-2}} + o(1)$. These bounds are sharp.

Slightly subcritical hypercube percolation

We study bond percolation on the hypercube $\{0,1\}^m$ in the slightly subcritical regime where $p = p_c (1-\varepsilon_m)$ and $\varepsilon_m = o(1)$ but $\varepsilon_m \gg 2^{-m/3}$ and study the clusters of largest volume and diameter. We establish that with high probability the largest component has cardinality $Θ\left(\varepsilon_m^{-2} \log(\varepsilon_m^3 2^m)\right)$, that the maximal diameter of all clusters is $(1+o(1)) \varepsilon_m^{-1} \log(\varepsilon_m^3 2^m)$, and that the maximal mixing time of all clusters is $Θ\left(\varepsilon_m^{-3} \log^2(\varepsilon_m^3 2^m)\right)$. These results hold in different levels of generality, and in particular, some of the estimates hold for various classes of graphs such as high-dimensional tori, expanders of high degree and girth, products of complete graphs, and infinite lattices in high dimensions.

Unimodular Hyperbolic Triangulations: Circle Packing and Random Walk

We show that the circle packing type of a unimodular random plane triangulation is parabolic if and only if the expected degree of the root is six, if and only if the triangulation is amenable in the sense of Aldous and Lyons. As a part of this, we obtain an alternative proof of the Benjamini-Schramm Recurrence Theorem. Secondly, in the hyperbolic case, we prove that the random walk almost surely converges to a point in the unit circle, that the law of this limiting point has full support and no atoms, and that the unit circle is a realisation of the Poisson boundary. Finally, we show that the simple random walk has positive speed in the hyperbolic metric.

Boundaries of planar graphs, via circle packings

We provide a geometric representation of the Poisson and Martin boundaries of a transient, bounded degree triangulation of the plane in terms of its circle packing in the unit disc. (This packing is unique up to Möbius transformations.) More precisely, we show that any bounded harmonic function on the graph is the harmonic extension of some measurable function on the boundary of the disk, and that the space of extremal positive harmonic functions, that is, the Martin boundary, is homeomorphic to the unit circle. All our results hold more generally for any "good"-embedding of planar graphs, that is, an embedding in the unit disc with straight lines such that angles are bounded away from $0$ and $π$ uniformly, and lengths of adjacent edges are comparable. Furthermore, we show that in a good embedding of a planar graph the probability that a random walk exits a disc through a sufficiently wide arc is at least a constant, and that Brownian motion on such graphs takes time of order $r^2$ to exit a disc of radius $r$. These answer a question recently posed by Chelkak (2014).

Indistinguishability of Trees in Uniform Spanning Forests

We prove that in both the free and the wired uniform spanning forest (FUSF and WUSF) of any unimodular random rooted network (in particular, of any Cayley graph), it is impossible to distinguish the connected components of the forest from each other by invariantly defined graph properties almost surely. This confirms a conjecture of Benjamini, Lyons, Peres and Schramm. We use this to answer positively two additional questions of Benjamini, Lyons, Peres and Schramm under the assumption of unimodularity. We prove that on any unimodular random rooted network, the FUSF is either connected or has infinitely many connected components almost surely, and, if the FUSF and WUSF are distinct, then every component of the FUSF is transient and infinitely-ended almost surely. All of these results are new even for Cayley graphs.

Recurrence of multiply-ended planar triangulations

In this note we show that a bounded degree planar triangulation is recurrent if and only if the set of accumulation points of some/any circle packing of it is polar (that is, planar Brownian motion avoids it with probability 1). This generalizes a theorem of He and Schramm [6] who proved it when the set of accumulation points is either empty or a Jordan curve, in which case the graph has one end. We also show that this statement holds for any straight-line embedding with angles uniformly bounded away from 0.

Random walks on stochastic hyperbolic half planar triangulations

We study the simple random walk on stochastic hyperbolic half planar triangulations constructed in Angel and Ray [3]. We show that almost surely the walker escapes the boundary of the map in positive speed and that the return probability to the starting point after n steps scales like $\exp(-cn^{1/3})$.

Rate of Convergence for Cardy's Formula

We show that crossing probabilities in 2D critical site percolation on the triangular lattice in a piecewise analytic Jordan domain converge with power law rate in the mesh size to their limit given by the Cardy-Smirnov formula. We use this result to obtain new upper and lower bounds of exp(O(sqrt(log log R))) R^(-1/3) for the probability that the cluster at the origin in the half-plane has diameter R, improving the previously known estimate of R^(-1/3+o(1)).

Nonconcentration of return times

We show that the distribution of the first return time $τ$ to the origin, v, of a simple random walk on an infinite recurrent graph is heavy tailed and nonconcentrated. More precisely, if $d_v$ is the degree of v, then for any $t\geq1$ we have \[\mathbf{P}_v(τ\ge t)\ge\frac{c}{d_v\sqrt{t}}\] and \[\mathbf{P}_v(τ=t\midτ\geq t)\leq\frac{C\log(d_vt)}{t}\] for some universal constants $c>0$ and $C<\infty$. The first bound is attained for all t when the underlying graph is $\mathbb{Z}$, and as for the second bound, we construct an example of a recurrent graph G for which it is attained for infinitely many t's. Furthermore, we show that in the comb product of that graph G with $\mathbb{Z}$, two independent random walks collide infinitely many times almost surely. This answers negatively a question of Krishnapur and Peres [Electron. Commun. Probab. 9 (2004) 72-81] who asked whether every comb product of two infinite recurrent graphs has the finite collision property.

Unlacing the lace expansion: a survey to hypercube percolation

The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we survey the study of the percolation phase transition on the Hamming hypercube {0,1}^m obtained in the series of papers [9,10,11,24]. Secondly, we explain how this study can be performed without the use of the so-called "lace-expansion" technique. To that aim, we provide a novel simple proof that the triangle condition holds at the critical probability. We hope that some of these techniques will be useful to obtain non-perturbative proofs in the analogous, yet much more difficult study on high-dimensional tori.

Recurrence of planar graph limits

We prove that any distributional limit of finite planar graphs in which the degree of the root has an exponential tail is almost surely recurrent. As a corollary, we obtain that the uniform infinite planar triangulation and quadrangulation (UIPT and UIPQ) are almost surely recurrent, resolving a conjecture of Angel, Benjamini and Schramm. We also settle another related problem of Benjamini and Schramm. We show that in any bounded degree, finite planar graph the probability that the simple random walk started at a uniform random vertex avoids its initial location for T steps is at most C/log T.

Hypercube percolation

We study bond percolation on the Hamming hypercube {0,1}^m around the critical probability p_c. It is known that if p=p_c(1+O(2^{-m/3})), then with high probability the largest connected component C_1 is of size Theta(2^{2m/3}) and that this quantity is non-concentrated. Here we show that for any sequence eps_m such that eps_m=o(1) but eps_m >> 2^{-m/3} percolation on the hypercube at p_c(1+eps_m) has |C_1| = (2+o(1)) eps_m 2^m and |C_2| = o(eps_m 2^m) with high probability, where C_2 is the second largest component. This resolves a conjecture of Borgs, Chayes, the first author, Slade and Spencer [17].
