The Newton approximation, the Hurwitz continued fraction, and the Sierpinski series for relatively quadratic units over certain imaginary quadratic number fields

The objective of this paper is to show (a)=(b)=(c) as rational functions of $T$, $U$ for (a), (b), (c) given by (a) continued fractions of length $2^{n+1}-1$ with explicit partial denominators in $\left\{-T,U^{-1}T\right\}$, (b) truncated series $\sum_{0\le m\le n} \left(U^{2^m}/\left(h_0(T)h_1(T,U) \cdots h_m(T,U)\right)\right)$ with $h_n$ defined by $h_0:=T$ and $h_{n+1}(T,U):=h_n(T,U)^2-2U^{2^n} (n \geq 0)$, (c) $(n+1)$-fold iteration $F^{(n+1)}(0)= F^{(n+1)}(0,T,U)$ of $F(X)= F(X,T,U) :=X-f(X)/\frac{df}{dX}(X)$ for $f(X)=X^2-T X+U$, and to find explicit equalities among truncated Hurwitz continued fraction expansion of relatively quadratic units $α\in \mathbb{C}$ over imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}\left(\sqrt{-1}\right)$, $\mathbb{Q}\left(\sqrt{-3}\right)$, rapidly convergent complex series called the Sierpinski series, and the Newton approximation of $α$ on the complex plane. We also give an estimate of the error of the Newton approximation of the unit $α$.

Accelerating true orbit pseudorandom number generation using Newton's method

The binary expansions of irrational algebraic numbers can serve as high-quality pseudorandom binary sequences. This study presents an efficient method for computing the exact binary expansions of real quadratic algebraic integers using Newton's method. To this end, we clarify conditions under which the first $N$ bits of the binary expansion of an irrational number match those of its upper rational approximation. Furthermore, we establish that the worst-case time complexity of generating a sequence of length $N$ with the proposed method is equivalent to the complexity of multiplying two $N$-bit integers, showing its efficiency compared to a previously proposed true orbit generator. We report the results of numerical experiments on computation time and memory usage, highlighting in particular that the proposed method successfully accelerates true orbit pseudorandom number generation. We also confirm that a generated pseudorandom sequence successfully passes all the statistical tests included in RabbitFile of TestU01.

Arithmetical independence of certain uniform sets of algebraic integers

We study four (families of) sets of algebraic integers of degree less than or equal to three. Apart from being simply defined, we show that they share two distinctive characteristics: almost uniformity and arithmetical independence. Here, ``almost uniformity'' means that the elements of a finite set are distributed almost equidistantly in the unit interval, while ``arithmetical independence'' means that the number fields generated by the elements of a set do not have a mutual inclusion relation each other. Furthermore, we reveal to what extent the algebraic number fields generated by the elements of the four sets can cover quadratic or cubic fields.

Critical curves of rotations

In rotations with a binary symbolic dynamics, a critical curve is the locus of parameters for which the boundaries of the partition that defines the symbolic dynamics are connected via a prescribed number of iterations and symbolic itinerary. We study the arithmetical and geometrical properties of these curves in parameter space.

Second-level randomness test based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test

We analyzed the effect of the deviation of the exact distribution of the p-values from the uniform distribution on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test that was implemented as the second-level randomness test. We derived an inequality that provides an upper bound on the expected value of the K-S test statistic when the distribution of the null hypothesis differs from the exact distribution. Furthermore, we proposed a second-level test based on the two-sample K-S test with an ideal empirical distribution as a candidate for improvement.

Critical curves of a piecewise linear map

We study the parameter space of a family of planar maps, which are linear on each of the right and left half-planes. We consider the set of parameters for which every orbit recurs to the boundary between half-planes. These parameters consist of algebraic curves, determined by the symbolic dynamics of the itinerary that connects boundary points. We study the algebraic and geometrical properties of these curves, in relation with such a symbolic dynamics.

Rate Distortion Theorem and the Multicritical Point of Spin Glass

A spin system can be thought of as an information coding system that transfers information of the interaction configuration into information of the equilibrium state of the spin variables. Hence it can be expected that the relations between the interaction configuration and equilibrium states are consistent with the known laws of information theory. We show that Shannon's rate-distortion theorem can be used to obtain an universal constraint on neighboring spin correlations for a broad range of Ising spin systems with two-body spin interactions. Remarkably, this constraint gives a bound for the multicritical point in the phase diagram, when a mean-field behavior for the neighboring spin pairs can be expected in the paramagnetic phase.

Pseudorandom number generator based on the Bernoulli map on cubic algebraic integers

We develop a method for generating pseudorandom binary sequences using the Bernoulli map on cubic algebraic integers. The distinguishing characteristic of our generator is that it generates chaotic true orbits of the Bernoulli map by exact computation. In particular, we clarify a way to properly prepare a set of initial points (i.e., seeds), which is needed when generating multiple pseudorandom sequences. With this seed selection method, we can distribute the initial points almost uniformly in the unit interval and can also guarantee that the orbits starting from them do not merge. We also report results of a large variety of tests indicating that the generated pseudorandom sequences have good statistical properties as well as an advantage over what is probably the most popular generator, the Mersenne Twister MT19937.

Continued fraction algorithms and Lagrange's theorem in ${\mathbb Q}_p$

We present several continued fraction algorithms, each of which gives an eventually periodic expansion for every quadratic element of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ over ${\mathbb Q}$ and gives a finite expansion for every rational number. We also give, for each of our algorithms, the complete characterization of elements having purely periodic expansions.
