Description of curved spacetimes by finite-size matrices in the type IIB matrix model

The type IIB matrix model is expected to give a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Its covariant derivative interpretation provides a method to describe curved spacetimes in the model. There, matrices are identified with certain covariant derivatives which can be viewed as infinite-size matrices. Here, by using the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, we develop a method to regularize these matrices as finite-size ones, which is needed to calculate quantum effects in the interpretation or in particular to apply the interpretation to the results of numerical simulations. As examples, we examine the cases of $T^{2n}$ and $S^2$ in detail.

Quantum Reversibility Meets Classical Reverse Diffusion

Bayes' rule connects forward and reverse processes in classical probability theory, and its quantum analogue has been discussed in terms of the Petz (transpose) map. For quantum dynamics governed by the Lindblad equation, the corresponding Petz map can also be written in Lindblad form. In classical stochastic systems, the analogue of the Lindblad equation is the Fokker-Planck equation, and applying Bayes' rule to it yields the reverse diffusion equation underlying modern diffusion-based generative models. It is known that a semiclassical approximation of the Lindblad equation yields the Fokker-Planck equation for the Wigner function, which is a quasiprobability distribution defined on phase space as the Wigner transform of the density operator. Here we demonstrate that applying the same approximation to the Lindblad equation associated with the Petz map produces an equation that coincides with that obtained from the Fokker-Planck equation via Bayes' rule. This finding establishes a direct correspondence between the Petz map and Bayes' rule, unifying quantum reversibility with classical reverse diffusion.

Impact of supersymmetry on the dynamical emergence of the spacetime in the type IIB matrix model with the Lorentz symmetry "gauge fixed"

The type IIB matrix model has been proposed as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. While numerical simulations of this model are essential for probing nonperturbative effects, such as the emergence of time and an expanding 3--dimensional space, they are hindered by the sign problem. We address this using the Complex Langevin Method (CLM). Furthermore, to suppress spurious numerical artifacts that originate from large Lorentz boosts due to the Lorentz symmetry of the model, we nonperturbatively fix the Lorentz symmetry using the Faddeev--Popov procedure. We then study this model to investigate the impact of supersymmetry on the dynamical generation of (3+1)--dimensional spacetime.

The emergence of (3+1)-dimensional expanding spacetime from complex Langevin simulations of the Lorentzian type IIB matrix model with deformations

The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In this model, the eigenvalue distribution of the $N\times N$ bosonic matrices $A_μ$ $(μ= 0 , \ldots , 9)$ represents an emergent spacetime, which is determined by the dynamics of the model in the large-$N$ limit. Here we perform numerical simulations of the model overcoming the sign problem by the complex Langevin method with the matrix size $N$ up to $128$. In order to avoid the singular drift problem due to the Pfaffian, which appears after integrating out the fermionic matrices, we deform the model in a manner inspired by the supersymmetric deformation, which is used to define the ``polarized type IIB matrix model'' in the Euclidean case. We find that the deformed model exhibits a phase in which (3+1)-dimensional expanding spacetime emerges with both space and time being smooth and real.

On the validity of the complex Langevin method near the deconfining phase transition in QCD at finite density

In our previous paper [JHEP 10 (2020) 144], we found that the complex Langevin (CL) method works for QCD at finite density on the $16^3 \times 32$ lattice in the low-temperature high-density regime within the range $μ/ T = 1.6 - 9.6$ with $μ$ and $T$ being the quark chemical potential and the temperature, which enabled us to see a clear trend towards the formation of the Fermi sphere. Here we investigate the validity of the CL method on the $24^3 \times 12$ lattice in the deconfined phase near the deconfinement phase transition. As before, we use four-flavor staggered fermions and judge the validity using the criterion based on the probability distribution of the drift term. The spatial extent is $L = (1.3 - 2.7 {\rm ~fm} )> Λ_{\rm LQCD}^{-1} \sim 1{\rm ~fm}$, in contrast to our previous study with $L < Λ_{\rm LQCD}^{-1}$. We find that the CL method works in a broad region up to $μ/ T = 4.8$, while it starts to fail as we approach the phase boundary due to the singular drift problem, which can be understood qualitatively by extending the Banks-Casher relation to the case at finite density.

Regularization of matrices in the covariant derivative interpretation of matrix models

We study regularization of matrices in the covariant derivative interpretation of matrix models, a typical example of which is the type IIB matrix model. The covariant derivative interpretation provides a possible way in which curved spacetimes are described by matrices, which are viewed as differential operators. One needs to regularize the operators as matrices with finite size in order to apply the interpretation to nonperturbative calculations such as numerical simulations. We develop a regularization of the covariant derivatives in two dimensions by using the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization. As examples, we examine the cases of $S^2$ and $T^2$ in details.

Quantum error correction realized by the renormalization group in scalar field theories

We demonstrate that quantum error correction is realized by the renormalization group in scalar field theories. We construct $q$-level states by using coherent states in the IR region. By acting on them the inverse of the unitary operator $U$ that describes the renormalization group flow of the ground state, we encode them into states in the UV region. We find the situations in which the Knill-Laflamme condition is satisfied for operators that create coherent states. We verify this to the first order in the perturbation theory. This result suggests a general relationship between the renormalization group and quantum error correction and should give insights into understanding the role played by them in the gauge/gravity correspondence.

The effects of SUSY on the emergent spacetime in the Lorentzian type IIB matrix model

The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recently we performed complex Langevin simulations by adding a Lorentz invariant mass term as an IR regulator and found a (1+1)-dimensional expanding spacetime with a Lorentzian signature emerging dynamically at late times when the fermionic contribution is omitted. Here we find that this is merely an artifact of the Lorentz boosts by showing that the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry is eliminated if one chooses a Lorentz frame appropriately. On the other hand, when we include the fermionic contribution, we find some evidence suggesting the emergence of a smooth (3+1)-dimensional expanding Lorentzian spacetime.

The emergence of expanding space-time in the Lorentzian type IIB matrix model with a novel regularization

The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. However, it was recently found that a Euclidean space-time appears in the conventional large-$N$ limit. In this work, we study the model with a Lorentz invariant mass term which can be considered as an IR regulator. By performing complex Langevin simulations to overcome the sign problem, we observe the emergence of expanding space-time with Lorentzian signature.

Exact renormalization group for wave functionals

Motivated by the construction of the cMERA for interacting field theories, we derive a non-perturbative functional differential equation for wave functionals in scalar field theories from the exact renormalization group equation. We check the validity of the equation using the perturbation theory. We calculate the wave functional up to the first-order perturbation and verify that it satisfies the equation.

Color superconductivity on the lattice -- analytic predictions from QCD in a small box

We investigate color superconductivity on the lattice using the gap equation for the Cooper pair condensate. The weak coupling analysis is justified by choosing the physical size of the lattice to be smaller than the QCD scale, while keeping the aspect ratio of the lattice small enough to suppress thermal excitations. In the vicinity of the critical coupling constant that separates the superconducting phase and the normal phase, the gap equation can be linearized, and by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem, we obtain the critical point and the Cooper pair condensate without assuming its explicit form. The momentum components of the condensate suggest spatially isotropic s-wave superconductivity with Cooper pairs formed by quarks near the Fermi surface. The chiral symmetry in the massless limit is spontaneously broken by the Cooper pair condensate, which turns out to be dominated by the scalar and the pseudo-scalar components. Our results provide useful predictions, in particular, for future lattice simulations based on methods to overcome the sign problem such as the complex Langevin method.

The emergence of expanding space-time in a novel large-$N$ limit of the Lorentzian type IIB matrix model

The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. However, it was found recently that a Euclidean space-time appears in the conventional large-$N$ limit. In this work, we add a Lorentz invariant mass term to the original model and consider a limit, in which the coefficient of the mass term vanishes at large $N$. By performing complex Langevin simulations to overcome the sign problem, we observe the emergence of expanding space-time with the Lorentzian signature.

Progress in the numerical studies of the type IIB matrix model

The type IIB matrix model, also known as the IKKT model, has been proposed as a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. Based on this proposal, various attempts have been made to explain how our four-dimensional space-time can emerge dynamically from superstring theory. In this article, we review the progress in numerical studies on the type IIB matrix model. We particularly focus on the most recent results for the Euclidean and Lorentzian versions, which are obtained using the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We also review the earlier results obtained using conventional Monte Carlo methods and clarify the relationship among different calculations.

Toward tensor renormalization group study of three-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory

We propose a method to represent the path integral over gauge fields as a tensor network. We introduce a trial action with variational parameters and generate gauge field configurations with the weight defined by the trial action. We construct initial tensors with indices labelling these gauge field configurations. We perform the tensor renormalization group with the initial tensors and optimize the variational parameters. As a first step to the TRG study of non-Abelian gauge theory in more than two dimensions, we apply this method to three-dimensional pure SU(2) gauge theory. Our result for the free energy agrees with the analytical results in weak and strong coupling regimes.

Higher derivative extension of the functional renormalization group

We study higher derivative extension of the functional renormalization group (FRG). We consider FRG equations for a scalar field that consist of terms with higher functional derivatives of the effective action and arbitrary cutoff functions. We show that the epsilon expansion around the Wilson-Fisher fixed point is indeed reproduced by the local potential approximation of the FRG equations.

Target space entanglement in a matrix model for the bubbling geometry

We study the target space entanglement entropy in a complex matrix model that describes the chiral primary sector in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, which is associated with the bubbling AdS geometry. The target space for the matrix model is a two-dimensional plane where the eigenvalues of the complex matrix distribute. The eigenvalues are viewed as the position coordinates of fermions, and the eigenvalue distribution corresponds to a droplet formed by the fermions. The droplet is identified with one that specifies a boundary condition in the bubbling geometry. We consider states in the matrix model that correspond to $AdS_5\times S^5$, an AdS giant graviton and a giant graviton in the bubbling geometry. We calculate the target space entanglement entropy of a subregion for each of the states in the matrix model as well as the area of the boundary of the subregion in the bubbling geometry, and find a qualitative agreement between them.

Complex Langevin studies of the emergent space-time in the type IIB matrix model

The type IIB matrix model has been proposed as a non-perturbative definition of superstring theory since 1996. We study a simplified model that describes the late time behavior of the type IIB matrix model non-perturbatively using Monte Carlo methods, and we use the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We investigate a scenario where the space-time signature changes dynamically from Euclidean at early times to Lorentzian at late times. We discuss the possibility of the emergence of the (3+1)D expanding universe.

Relationship between the Euclidean and Lorentzian versions of the type IIB matrix model

The type IIB matrix model was proposed as a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory in 1996. We simulate a model that describes the late time behavior of the IIB matrix model by applying the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We clarify the relationship between the Euclidean and the Lorentzian versions of the type IIB matrix model in a recently discovered phase. By introducing a constraint, we obtain a model where the spacetime metric is Euclidean at early times, whereas it {\it dynamically} becomes Lorentzian at late times.
