A non-perturbative formulation of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory based on the large-N reduction

We study a non-perturbative formulation of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on RxS^3 proposed in arXiv:0807.2352. This formulation is based on the large-N reduction, and the theory can be described as a particular large-N limit of the plane wave matrix model (PWMM), which is obtained by dimensionally reducing the original theory over S^3. In this paper, we perform some tests for this proposal. We construct an operator in the PWMM that corresponds to the Wilson loop in SYM in the continuum limit and calculate the vacuum expectation value of the operator for the case of the circular contour. We find that our result indeed agrees with the well-known result first obtained by Erickson, Semenoff and Zarembo. We also compute the beta function at the 1-loop level based on this formulation and see that it is indeed vanishing.

Supersymmetry non-renormalization theorem from a computer and the AdS/CFT correspondence

We perform Monte Carlo calculation of correlation functions in 4d N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on R*S^3 in the planar limit. In order to circumvent the well-known problem of lattice SUSY, we adopt the idea of a novel large-N reduction, which reduces the calculation to that of corresponding correlation functions in the plane-wave matrix model or the BMN matrix model. This model is a 1d gauge theory with 16 supersymmetries, which can be simulated in a manner similar to the recent studies of the D0-brane system. We study two-point and three-point functions of chiral primary operators at various coupling constant, and find that they agree with the free theory results up to overall constant factors. The ratio of the overall factors for two-point and three-point functions agrees with the prediction of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Large N reduction on group manifolds

We show that the large N reduction holds on group manifolds. Large N field theories defined on group manifolds are equivalent to some corresponding matrix models. For instance, gauge theories on S^3 can be regularized in a gauge invariant and SO(4) invariant manner.

Large N reduction on coset spaces

As an extension of our previous work concerning the large N reduction on group manifolds, we study the large N reduction on coset spaces. We show that large N field theories on coset spaces are described by certain corresponding matrix models. We also construct Chern-Simons-like theories on group manifolds and coset spaces, and give their reduced models.

A Novel Large-N Reduction on S^3: Demonstration in Chern-Simons Theory

We show that the planar Chern-Simons (CS) theory on S^3 can be described by its dimensionally reduced model. This description of CS theory can be regarded as a novel large-N reduction for gauge theories on S^3. We find that if one expands the reduced model around a particular background consisting of multiple fuzzy spheres, the reduced model becomes equivalent to CS theory on S^3 in the planar limit. In fact, we show that the free energy and the vacuum expectation value of unknot Wilson loop in CS theory are reproduced by the reduced model in the large-N limit.

Large N reduction for Chern-Simons theory on S^3

We study a matrix model which is obtained by dimensional reduction of Chern-Simon theory on S^3 to zero dimension. We find that expanded around a particular background consisting of multiple fuzzy spheres, it reproduces the original theory on S^3 in the planar limit. This is viewed as a new type of the large N reduction generalized to curved space.

Testing a novel large-N reduction for N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3

Recently a novel large-N reduction has been proposed as a maximally supersymmetric regularization of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3 in the planar limit. This proposal, if it works, will enable us to study the theory non-perturbatively on a computer, and hence to test the AdS/CFT correspondence analogously to the recent works on the D0-brane system. We provide a nontrivial check of this proposal by performing explicit calculations in the large-N reduced model, which is nothing but the so-called plane wave matrix model, around a particular stable vacuum corresponding to RxS^3. At finite temperature and at weak coupling, we reproduce precisely the deconfinement phase transition in the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3. This phase transition is considered to continue to the strongly coupled regime, where it corresponds to the Hawking-Page transition on the AdS side. We also perform calculations around other stable vacua, and reproduce the phase transition in super Yang-Mills theory on the corresponding curved space-times such as RxS^3/Z_q and RxS^2.

Two-Dimensional Gauge Theory and Matrix Model

We study a matrix model obtained by dimensionally reducing Chern-Simon theory on S^3. We find that the matrix integration is decomposed into sectors classified by the representation of SU(2). We show that the N-block sectors reproduce SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on S^2 as the matrix size goes to infinity.

Fiber Bundles and Matrix Models

We investigate relationship between a gauge theory on a principal bundle and that on its base space. In the case where the principal bundle is itself a group manifold, we also study relations of those gauge theories with a matrix model obtained by dimensionally reducing them to zero dimensions. First, we develop the dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills (YM) on the total space to YM-higgs on the base space for a general principal bundle. Second, we show a relationship that YM on an SU(2) bundle is equivalent to the theory around a certain background of YM-higgs on its base space. This is an extension of our previous work (hep-th/0703021), in which the same relationship concerning a U(1) bundle is shown. We apply these results to the case of $SU(n+1)$ as the total space. By dimensionally reducing YM on $SU(n+1)$, we obtain YM-higgs on $SU(n+1)/SU(n)\simeq S^{2n+1}$ and on $SU(n+1)/(SU(n)\times U(1))\simeq CP^n$ and a matrix model. We show that the theory around each monopole vacuum of YM-higgs on $CP^n$ is equivalent to the theory around a certain vacuum of the matrix model in the commutative limit. By combing this with the relationship concerning a U(1) bundle, we realize YM-higgs on $SU(n+1)/SU(n)\simeq S^{2n+1}$ in the matrix model. We see that the relationship concerning a U(1) bundle can be interpreted as Buscher's T-duality.

Deconfinement phase transition in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3 from supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics

We test the recent claim that supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics with mass deformation preserving maximal supersymmetry can be used to study N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3 in the planar limit. When the mass parameter is large, we can integrate out all the massive fluctuations around a particular classical solution, which corresponds to RxS^3. The resulting effective theory for the gauge field moduli at finite temperature is studied both analytically and numerically, and shown to reproduce the deconfinement phase transition in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3 at weak coupling. This transition was speculated to be a continuation of the conjectured phase transition at strong coupling, which corresponds to the Hawking-Page transition based on the gauge-gravity duality. By choosing a different classical solution of the same model, one can also reproduce results for gauge theories on other space-time such as RxS^3/Z_q and RxS^2. All these theories can be studied at strong coupling by the new simulation method, which was used successfully for supersymmetric matrix quantum mechanics without mass deformation.

N=4 Super Yang-Mills from the Plane Wave Matrix Model

We propose a nonperturbative definition of N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM). We realize N=4 SYM on RxS^3 as the theory around a vacuum of the plane wave matrix model. Our regularization preserves sixteen supersymmetries and the gauge symmetry. We perform the 1-loop calculation to give evidences that the superconformal symmetry is restored in the continuum limit.

On relationships among Chern-Simons theory, BF theory and matrix model

Chern-Simons theory on a U(1) bundle over a Riemann surface Σ_g of genus g is dimensionally reduced to BF theory with a mass term, which is equivalent to the two-dimensional Yang-Mills on Σ_g. We show that the former is inversely obtained from the latter by the extended matrix T-duality developed in hep-th/0703021. For the case of g=0 (i.e. S^2), the U(1) bundle represents the lens space S^3/Z_p. We find that in this case both the Chern-Simons theory and the BF theory with the mass term are realized in a matrix model. We also construct Wilson loops in the matrix model that correspond to those in the Chern-Simons theory on S^3.

Embedding of theories with SU(2|4) symmetry into the plane wave matrix model

We study theories with SU(2|4) symmetry, which include the plane wave matrix model, 2+1 SYM on RxS^2 and N=4 SYM on RxS^3/Z_k. All these theories possess many vacua. From Lin-Maldacena's method which gives the gravity dual of each vacuum, it is predicted that the theory around each vacuum of 2+1 SYM on RxS^2 and N=4 SYM on RxS^3/Z_k is embedded in the plane wave matrix model. We show this directly on the gauge theory side. We clearly reveal relationships among the spherical harmonics on S^3, the monopole harmonics and the harmonics on fuzzy spheres. We extend the compactification (the T-duality) in matrix models a la Taylor to that on spheres.

T-duality, Fiber Bundles and Matrices

We extend the T-duality for gauge theory to that on curved space described as a nontrivial fiber bundle. We also present a new viewpoint concerning the consistent truncation and the T-duality for gauge theory and discuss the relation between the vacua on the total space and on the base space. As examples, we consider S^3(/Z_k), S^5(/Z_k) and the Heisenberg nilmanifold.

N=4 SYM on R x S^3 and Theories with 16 Supercharges

We study N=4 SYM on R x S^3 and theories with 16 supercharges arising as its consistent truncations. These theories include the plane wave matrix model, N=4 SYM on R x S^2 and N=4 SYM on R x S^3/Z_k, and their gravity duals were studied by Lin and Maldacena. We make a harmonic expansion of the original N=4 SYM on R x S^3 and obtain each of the truncated theories by keeping a part of the Kaluza-Klein modes. This enables us to analyze all the theories in a unified way. We explicitly construct some nontrivial vacua of N=4 SYM on R x S^2. We perform 1-loop analysis of the original and truncated theories. In particular, we examine states regarded as the integrable SO(6) spin chain and a time-dependent BPS solution, which is considered to correspond to the AdS giant graviton in the original theory.

Complex Matrix Model and Fermion Phase Space for Bubbling AdS Geometries

We study a relation between droplet configurations in the bubbling AdS geometries and a complex matrix model that describes the dynamics of a class of chiral primary operators in dual N=4 super Yang Mills (SYM). We show rigorously that a singlet holomorphic sector of the complex matrix model is equivalent to a holomorphic part of two-dimensional free fermions, and establish an exact correspondence between the singlet holomorphic sector of the complex matrix model and one-dimensional free fermions. Based on this correspondence, we find a relation of the singlet holomorphic operators of the complex matrix model to the Wigner phase space distribution. By using this relation and the AdS/CFT duality, we give a further evidence that the droplets in the bubbling AdS geometries are identified with those in the phase space of the one-dimensional fermions. We also show that the above correspondence actually maps the operators of N=4 SYM corresponding to the (dual) giant gravitons to the droplet configurations proposed in the literature.

ZZ brane amplitudes from matrix models

We study instanton contribution to the partition function of the one matrix model in the k-th multicritical region, which corresponds to the (2,2k-1) minimal model coupled to Liouville theory. The instantons in the one matrix model are given by local extrema of the effective potential for a matrix eigenvalue and identified with the ZZ branes in Liouville theory. We show that the 2-instanton contribution in the partition function is universal as well as the 1-instanton contribution and that the connected part of the 2-instanton contribution reproduces the annulus amplitudes between the ZZ branes in Liouville theory. Our result serves as another nontrivial check on the correspondence between the instantons in the one matrix model and the ZZ branes in Liouville theory, and also suggests that the expansion of the partition function in terms of the instanton numbers are universal and gives systematically ZZ brane amplitudes in Liouville theory.
