Equidistribution of $q$-orbits of closed geodesics

Given an element of $(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})^\times$ we associate a closed geodesic on the modular surface. We prove that the closed geodesics associated to cosets of sufficiently large subgroups equidistribute in the unit tangent bundle as $q$ tends to infinity. This is a $q$-orbit analogue of Duke's theorem for real quadratic fields as extended to subgroups by Popa. Finally, we show that the homology classes of the $q$-orbits of oriented closed geodesics concentrate around the Eisenstein line and present group theoretic applications.

Equidistribution of partial coverings from closed geodesics

Given a finite volume hyperbolic surface, a fundamental polygon and an oriented closed geodesic, we associate a partial covering of the surface. We prove that given a sequence of collections of oriented closed geodesics equidistributing in the unit tangent bundle then the associated partial coverings also equidistribute. In the case of the modular group, this yields an alternative proof of an equidistribution result due to Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth.

Diophantine rank stability and non-vanishing of $L$-functions

Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be a modular abelian variety of analytic rank $0$. If $G$ is a non-trivial finite abelian group such that all prime factors of $\lvert G \rvert$ are sufficiently large in terms of $A$, we show that there are infinitely many $G$-extensions $F/\mathbb{Q}$ such that $A(F)$ is finite. When $A$ is a rational elliptic curve of analytic rank zero with no exceptional primes, or the product of two such curves, the same conclusion holds without any assumptions on $|G|$. Our proof relies on new simultaneous non-vanishing results for twisted central $L$-values of even-weight holomorphic newforms. These results are obtained via novel constructions related to horizontal $p$-adic $L$-functions and are of independent interest.

Central values of additive twists of Maaß forms $L$-functions

In the present paper we study the central values of additive twists of Maaß forms $L$-series. In the case of the modular group, we show that the additive twists (when averaged over denominators) are asymptotically normally distributed. This supplements the recent work of Petridis--Risager which settled an averaged version of a conjecture of Mazur--Rubin concerning modular symbols. The methods of the present paper combine dynamical input due to Bettin and the first named author with the new fact that the additive twists define quantum modular forms in the sense of Zagier. This latter property is shown for a general discrete, co-finite group with cusps. Our results also has a number of arithmetic applications; in the case of Hecke congruence groups the quantum modularity implies certain reciprocity relations for twisted moments of twisted ${\rm GL}_2$-automorphic $L$-functions, extending results of Conrey and the second named author. In the case of cuspidal Maaß forms for the modular group, we also obtain a calculation of certain wide moments of twists of the $L$-function of the Maaß form.

Horizontal $p$-adic $L$-functions

We define new objects called 'horizontal $p$-adic $L$-functions' associated to $L$-values of twists of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ by characters of $p$-power order and conductor prime to $p$. We study the fundamental properties of these objects and obtain applications to non-vanishing of finite order twists of central $L$-values, making progress toward conjectures of Goldfeld and David--Fearnley--Kisilevsky. For general elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ we obtain strong quantitative lower bounds on the number of non-vanishing central $L$-values of twists by Dirichlet characters of fixed order $d\equiv 2 \mod 4$ greater than two. We also obtain non-vanishing results for general $d$, including $d = 2$, under mild assumptions. In particular, for elliptic curves with $E[2](\mathbb{Q}) = 0$ we improve on the previously best known lower bounds on the number of non-vanishing $L$-values of quadratic twists due to Ono. Finally, we obtain results on simultaneous non-vanishing of twists of an arbitrary number of elliptic curves with applications to Diophantine stability.

Joint equidistribution of newforms

Let $Y_1$ be a compact arithmetic hyperbolic surface associated to a maximal quaternion order, let $Y_q$ be a cover associated to an Eichler suborder of prime level $q$, and let $ι_q$ be embedding of $Y_q$ as the Hecke correspondence into $Y_1 \times Y_1$. Let $μ_1$ and $μ_q$ be the invariant probability measures on $Y_1$ and $Y_q$, respectively. If $F$ is a newform on $Y_q$, we conjecture that the pushforward measure $(ι_q)_\ast(\lvert F \rvert^2 μ_q)$ converges weakly to the uniform measure $μ_1 \times μ_1$, as $q$ tends to infinity. We prove this conjecture with an effective rate of equidistribution, assuming GRH.

Sparse Equidistribution of Geometric Invariants of Real Quadratic Fields

Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth have recently constructed a new geometric invariant, a hyperbolic orbifold, associated to each narrow ideal class of a real quadratic field. Furthermore, they have shown that the projection of these hyperbolic orbifolds onto the modular surface $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$ equidistributes on average over a genus of the narrow class group as the fundamental discriminant $D$ of the real quadratic field tends to infinity. We extend this construction of hyperbolic orbifolds to allow for a level structure, akin to Heegner points and closed geodesics of level $q$. Additionally, we refine this equidistribution result in several directions. First, we investigate sparse equidistribution in the level aspect, where we prove the equidistribution of level $q$ hyperbolic orbifolds when restricted to a translate of $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$ in $Γ_0(q) \backslash \mathbb{H}$, which presents some new interesting features. Second, we explore sparse equidistribution in the subgroup aspect, namely equidistribution on average over small subgroups of the narrow class group. Third, we prove small scale equidistribution and give upper bounds for the discrepancy. Behind these refinements is a new interpretation of the Weyl sums arising in these equidistribution problems in terms of adèlic period integrals, which in turn are related to Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions via Waldspurger's formula. The key remaining inputs are hybrid subconvex bounds for these $L$-functions and a certain homological version of the sup-norm problem.

Non-vanishing of geodesic periods of automorphic forms

We prove that one hundred percent of the closed geodesic periods of a Hecke--Maaß cusp form for the modular group are non-vanishing when ordered by length. We present applications to the non-vanishing of central values of Rankin--Selberg $L$-functions. Similar results for holomorphic forms for general Fuchsian groups of finite covolume with a cusp are also obtained, as well as results towards normal distribution. Our new key ingredient is to relate the distributions of closed geodesic periods and vertical line integrals via graph theory.

$p$-adic moments of $L$-functions

We obtain a formula for the $p$-adic valuation of weighted moments of central $L$-values of holomorphic cusp forms twisted by Dirichlet characters of order $p$. In some cases we give an arithmetic interpretation of the constants in the formula. The result is obtained via the study of the digit map, turning a horizontal $p$-adic measure into a vertical one, applied to the horizontal $p$-adic $L$-functions as defined by the authors in previous work.

Wide moments of $L$-functions II: Dirichlet $L$-functions

We study wide moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions using analytic properties of the Lerch zeta function. Among other things we obtain an asymptotic expansion of wide moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions (with arbitrary twists) extending results of Heath-Brown. We also give applications to non-vanishing.

Concentration of closed geodesics in the homology of modular curves

We prove that the homology classes of closed geodesics associated to subgroups of narrow class groups of real quadratic fields concentrate around the Eisenstein line. This fits into the framework of Duke's Theorem and can be seen as a real quadratic analogue of results of Michel and Liu--Masri--Young on supersingular reduction of CM-elliptic curves. We also study the level aspect, as well as a homological version of the sup norm problem. Finally we present applications to group theory and modular forms.
