Anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of CM elliptic curves at ramified primes

We propose an integral framework for the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of CM elliptic curves $E$ at primes $p$ ramified in the CM field. The $\varepsilon$-constants of the geometric specialisations of the associated $p$-adic conjugate symplectic self-dual deformation equidistribute between $\pm 1$ within every layer of the anticyclotomic tower, and none of the geometric specialisations are trianguline at $p$. We define signed Selmer groups via the Lagrangian local conditions arising from the local sign decomposition established in the prequel \cite{BKNO}, and our central result is the formulation and proof of an integral Iwasawa main conjecture relating one of them to the $p$-adic $L$-function $\mathscr{L}_p(E)$ constructed there. We further show that $\mathscr{L}_p(E)$ interpolates the central Hecke $L$-values of the twists with $\varepsilon$-constant $+1$, including twists of arbitrary infinity type, and relate its values at twists with $\varepsilon$-constant $-1$ to the $p$-adic logarithm of certain Selmer elements. This provides the first Iwasawa main conjecture in terms of a $p$-adic $L$-function and Selmer groups for a $p$-adic deformation admitting no trianguline geometric specialisation. The proofs rest on our resolution of a Rubin-type conjecture for the underlying local deformation, together with a theory of plus/minus local points along the anticyclotomic tower, based on the Gaussian plus/minus cyclotomic polynomials rooted in Gauss' Disquisitiones Arithmeticae.

A refined non-vanishing of the $p$-adic logarithm of a rational point on an abelian variety

Inspired by a beautiful formula of Bertolini, Darmon, and Prasanna -- the oft-termed BDP formula -- we address questions about the non-vanishing of non-torsion points under $p$-adic logarithms of abelian varieties. We largely consider situations most applicable to ${\mathrm GL}_2$-type abelian varieties associated with Hilbert modular newforms and Heegner points. Not surprisingly, the main tool employed is the $p$-adic analytic subgroup theorem.

Mod $\ell$ non-vanishing of self-dual Hecke $L$-values over CM fields and applications

Let $\lambda$ be a self-dual Hecke character over a CM field $K$. Let $\mathfrak{p}$ be a degree one prime of the maximal totally real subfield $F$ of $K$ and $\Gamma_{\mathfrak{p}}$ the Galois group of the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. We prove that $$L(1,\lambda\nu)\neq 0$$ for all but finitely many finite order characters $\nu$ of $\Gamma_\mathfrak{p}$ such that $\varepsilon(\lambda\nu)=+1$. For an ordinary prime $\ell$ with respect to the CM quadratic extension $K/F$, we also determine the $\ell$-adic valuation of the normalised Hecke $L$-values $L^{alg}(1,\lambda\nu)$. As an application, we complete Hsieh's proof of Eisenstein congruence divisibility towards the CM Iwasawa main conjecture over $K$. Our approach and results complement the prior work initiated by Hida's ideas on the arithmetic of Hilbert modular Eisenstein series, studied via mod $\ell$ analogue of the Andr\'e--Oort conjecture. The previous results established the non-vanishing only for infinitely many characters $\nu$. Our approach is based on the arithmetic of a CM modular form on a Shimura set, studied via arithmetic of the CM field and Ratner's ergodicity of unipotent flows.

A local sign decomposition for symplectic self-dual Galois representations of rank two

We prove the existence of a new structure on the first Galois cohomology of generic families of symplectic self-dual $p$-adic representations of $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$ of rank two (a local sign decomposition): a functorial decomposition into free rank one Lagrangian submodules which encodes the $p$-adic variation of Bloch--Kato subgroups via completed epsilon constants, mirroring a symplectic structure. The local sign decomposition has diverse local as well as global arithmetic consequences. This includes compatibility of the Mazur--Rubin arithmetic local constant and completed epsilon constants, answering a question of Mazur and Rubin. The compatibility leads to new cases of the $p$-parity conjecture for Hilbert modular forms at supercuspidal primes $p$. We also formulate and prove an analogue of Rubin's conjecture over ramified quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Using it, we construct an integral $p$-adic $L$-function for anticyclotomic deformation of a CM elliptic curve at primes $p$ ramified in the CM field.

The $p$-adic valuation of local resolvents, generalized Gauss sums and anticyclotomic Hecke $L$-values of imaginary quadratic fields at inert primes

We prove an asymptotic formula for the $p$-adic valuation of Hecke $L$-values of an imaginary quadratic field at an inert prime $p$ along the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower. The key is determination of the $p$-adic valuation of generalized Gauss sums defined using Coates-Wiles homomorphism, and of local resolvents in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions. This answers a question of Rubin.

Generation of Hecke fields by squares of cyclotomic twists of modular $L$-values

Let $f$ be a non-CM elliptic newform without a quadratic inner twist, $p$ an odd prime and $\chi$ a Dirichlet character of $p$-power order and sufficiently large $p$-power conductor. We show that the compositum $\mathbb{Q}_{f}(\chi)$ of the Hecke fields associated to $f$ and $\chi$ is generated by the square of the absolute value of the corresponding central $L$-value $L^{\rm alg}(1/2, f \otimes \chi)$ over $\mathbb{Q}(\mu_p)$. The proof is based among other things on techniques used for the recent resolution of unipotent mixing conjecture by the first and third named authors.

Base change and Iwasawa Main Conjectures for ${\rm GL}_2$

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ of conductor $N$, $p$ an odd prime of good ordinary reduction such that $E[p]$ is an irreducible Galois module, and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field with all primes dividing $Np$ split. We prove Iwasawa Main Conjectures for the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-cyclotomic and $\mathbb{Z}_p$-anticyclotomic deformations of $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $K$ respectively, dispensing with any of the ramification hypotheses on $E[p]$ in previous works. The strategy employs base change and the two-variable zeta element associated to $E$ over $K$, via which the sought after main conjectures are deduced from Wan's divisibility towards a three-variable main conjecture for $E$ over a quartic CM field containing $K$ and certain Euler system divisibilities. As an application, we prove cases of the two-variable main conjecture for $E$ over $K$. The aforementioned one-variable main conjectures imply the $p$-part of the conjectural Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E$ if ${\rm ord}_{s=1}L(E,s)\leq 1$. They are also an ingredient in the proof of Kolyvagin's conjecture and its cyclotomic variant in our joint work with Grossi.

Zeta elements for elliptic curves and applications

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with conductor $N$ and $p\nmid 2N$ a prime. Let $L$ be an imaginary quadratic field with $p$ split. We prove the existence of $p$-adic zeta element for $E$ over $L$, encoding two different $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to $E$ over $L$ via explicit reciprocity laws at the primes above $p$. We formulate a main conjecture for $E$ over $L$ in terms of the zeta element, mediating different main conjectures in which the $p$-adic $L$-functions appear, and prove some results toward them. The zeta element has various applications to the arithmetic of elliptic curves. This includes a proof of main conjecture for semistable elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ at supersingular primes $p$, as conjectured by Kobayashi in 2002. It leads to the $p$-part of the conjectural Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) formula for such curves of analytic rank zero or one, and enables us to present the first infinite families of non-CM elliptic curves for which the BSD conjecture is true. We provide further evidence towards the BSD conjecture: new cases of $p$-converse to the Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem, and $p$-part of the BSD formula for ordinary primes $p$. Along the way, we give a proof of a conjecture of Perrin-Riou connecting Beilinson--Kato elements with rational points.

Anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of abelian varieties of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type at non-ordinary primes

Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime number, $E/\mathbb{Q}$ an elliptic curve with good supersingular reduction at $p$ and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field such that the root number of $E$ over $K$ is $+1$. When $p$ is split in $K$, Darmon and Iovita formulated the plus and minus Iwasawa main conjectures for $E$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$, and proved one-sided inclusion: an upper bound for plus and minus Selmer groups in terms of the associated $p$-adic $L$-functions. We generalize their results to two new settings: 1. Under the assumption that $p$ is split in $K$ but without assuming $a_p(E)=0$, we study Sprung-type Iwasawa main conjectures for abelian varieties of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type, and prove an analogous inclusion. 2. We formulate, relying on the recent work of the first named author with Kobayashi and Ota, plus and minus Iwasawa main conjectures for elliptic curves when $p$ is inert in $K$, and prove an analogous inclusion.

Non-vanishing of Kolyvagin systems and Iwasawa theory

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and $p$ an odd prime. In 1991 Kolyvagin conjectured that the system of cohomology classes for torsion quotients of the $p$-adic Tate module of $E$ derived from Heegner points over ring class fields of a suitable imaginary quadratic field $K$ (i.e., the Heegner point Kolyvagin system of $E/K$) is non-trivial. In this paper we prove Kolyvagin's conjecture when $p$ is a prime of good ordinary reduction for $E$ that splits in $K$. In particular, our results cover many cases where $p$ is an Eisenstein prime for $E$, complementing Wei Zhang's earlier results on the conjecture by a different approach. Our methods also yield a proof of a refinement of Kolyvagin's conjecture expressing the divisibility index of the Heegner point Kolyvagin system in terms of the Tamagawa numbers of $E$, as conjectured by Wei Zhang in 2014, as well as proofs of analogous results for the Kolyvagin system obtained from Kato's Euler system.

Anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of abelian varieties of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type at non-ordinary primes II

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ an elliptic curve with good supersingular reduction at a prime $p\geq 5$, and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field such that the root number of $E$ over $K$ equals $-1$. When $p$ splits in $K$, Castella and Wan formulated the plus/minus Heegner point main conjectures for $E$ along the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$, and proved them for semistable curves. We generalize their results to two settings: 1. For $p$ split in $K$, we formulate Sprung-type main conjectures for $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type abelian varieties at non-ordinary primes and prove them under some conditions. 2. For $p$ inert in $K$, we formulate, relying on the work of the first-named author with Kobayashi and Ota, plus/minus Heegner point main conjectures for elliptic curves, and prove the minus main conjecture for semistable curves. The latter yields a $p$-converse to the Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem for semistable elliptic curves $E$ at supersingular primes $p\geq 5$, complementing the pioneering $p$-converse theorems of Skinner and Zhang. Our method relies on Howard's framework of bipartite Euler systems, Zhang's resolution of Kolyvagin's conjecture and the recent proof of cyclotomic main conjecture at non-ordinary primes.

The conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for certain elliptic curves with complex multiplication

Let $E/F$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $F$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic field $K$. We give a complete proof of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for $E/F$, as well as its equivariant refinement formulated by Gross, under the assumption that $L(E/F,1)\neq 0$ and that $F(E_{tors})/K$ is abelian. We also prove analogous results for CM abelian varieties $A/K$.

Ordinary deformations are unobstructed in the cyclotomic limit

The deformation theory of ordinary representations of the absolute Galois groups of totally real number fields (over a finite field $k$) has been studied for a long time, starting with the work of Hida, Mazur and Tilouine, and continued by Wiles and others. Hida has studied the behaviour of these deformations when one considers the $p$-cyclotomic tower of extensions of the field. In the limit, one obtains a deformation ring $R_\infty$ classifying the ordinary deformations of the (Galois group of) the $p$-cyclotomic extension. We show that if $R_\infty$ is Noetherian and certain adjoint $μ$-invariants vanish (as is often expected), then $R_\infty$ is free over the ring of Witt vectors of $k$.

The even parity Goldfeld conjecture: congruent number elliptic curves

In 1979 Goldfeld conjectured: 50\% of the quadratic twists of an elliptic curve defined over the rationals have analytic rank zero. In this expository article we present a few recent developments towards the conjecture, especially its first instance - the congruent number elliptic curves.

A proof of Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture

Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $N$, let $p>3$ be a prime where $E$ has good ordinary reduction, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field satisfying the Heegner hypothesis. In 1987, Perrin-Riou formulated an Iwasawa main conjecture for the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ in terms of Heegner points. In this paper, we give a proof of Perrin-Riou's conjecture under mild hypotheses. Our proof builds on Howard's theory of bipartite Euler systems and Wei Zhang's work on Kolyvagin's conjecture. In the case when $p$ splits in $K$, we also obtain a proof of the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for the $p$-adic $L$-functions of Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna.

On the non-vanishing of $p$-adic heights on CM abelian varieties, and the arithmetic of Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions

Let $B$ be a simple CM abelian variety over a CM field $E$, $p$ a rational prime. Suppose that $B$ has potentially ordinary reduction above $p$ and is self-dual with root number $-1$. Under some further conditions, we prove the generic non-vanishing of (cyclotomic) $p$-adic heights on $B$ along anticyclotomic $\Z_{p}$-extensions of $E$. This provides evidence towards Schneider's conjecture on the non-vanishing of $p$-adic heights. For CM elliptic curves over $\Q$, the result was previously known as a consequence of work of Bertrand, Gross--Zagier and Rohrlich in the 1980s. Our proof is based on non-vanishing results for Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions and a Gross--Zagier formula relating the latter to families of rational points on $B$.

Indivisibility of Heegner points and arithmetic applications

We upgrade Howard's divisibility towards Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture to the predicted equality. Contrary to previous works in this direction, our main result allows for the classical Heegner hypothesis and non-squarefree conductors. The main ingredients we exploit are W.~Zhang's proof of Kolyvagin's conjecture, Kolyvagin's structure theorem for Shafarevich--Tate groups, and the explicit reciprocity law for Heegner points.
