New Characterizations of pseudo-Frobenius rings and a generalization of the FGF conjecture

We provide new characterizations of pseudo-Frobenius and quasi-Frobenius rings in terms of tight modules. In the process, we also provide fresh perspectives on FGF and CF conjectures. In particular, we propose new natural extensions of these conjectures which connect them with the classical theory of PF rings. Our techniques are mainly based on set-theoretic counting arguments initiated by Osofsky. Several corollaries and examples to illustrate their applications are given.

Automorphism-invariant modules

A module is called automorphism-invariant if it is invariant under any automorphism of its injective envelope. In this survey article we present the current state of art dealing with such class of modules.

Modules invariant under automorphisms of their covers and envelopes

In this paper we develop a general theory of modules which are invariant under automorphisms of their covers and envelopes. When applied to specific cases like injective envelopes, pure-injective envelopes, cotorsion envelopes, projective covers, or flat covers, these results extend and provide a much more succinct and clear proofs for various results existing in the literature. Our results are based on several key observations on the additive unit structure of von Neumann regular rings.

Automorphism-invariant modules satisfy the exchange property

Warfield proved that every injective module has the exchange property. This was generalized by Fuchs who showed that quasi-injective modules satisfy the exchange property. We extend this further and prove that a module invariant under automorphisms of its injective hull satisfies the exchange property. We also show that automorphism-invariant modules are clean and that directly-finite automorphism-invariant modules satisfy the internal cancellation and hence the cancellation property.

Additive Unit Representations in Endomorphism Rings and an Extension of a result of Dickson and Fuller

A module is called automorphism-invariant if it is invariant under any automorphism of its injective hull. Dickson and Fuller have shown that if $R$ is a finite-dimensional algebra over a field $\mathbb F$ with more than two elements then an indecomposable automorphism-invariant right $R$-module must be quasi-injective. In this note, we extend and simplify the proof of this result by showing that any automorphism-invariant module over an algebra over a field with more than two elements is quasi-injective. Our proof is based on the study of the additive unit structure of endomorphism rings.

Rings and modules which are stable under automorphisms of their injective hulls

It is proved, among other results, that a prime right nonsingular ring (in particular, a simple ring) $R$ is right self-injective if $R_R$ is invariant under automorphisms of its injective hull. This answers two questions raised by Singh and Srivastava, and Clark and Huynh. An example is given to show that this conclusion no longer holds when prime ring is replaced by semiprime ring in the above assumption. Also shown is that automorphism-invariant modules are precisely pseudo-injective modules, answering a recent question of Lee and Zhou. Furthermore, rings whose cyclic modules are automorphism-invariant are investigated.

Decomposing elements of a right self-injective ring

It was proved independently by both Wolfson [An ideal theoretic characterization of the ring of all linear transformations, Amer. J. Math. 75 (1953), 358-386] and Zelinsky [Every Linear Transformation is Sum of Nonsingular Ones, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 5 (1954), 627-630] that every linear transformation of a vector space $V$ over a division ring $D$ is the sum of two invertible linear transformations except when $V$ is one-dimensional over $\mathbb Z_2$. This was extended by Khurana and Srivastava [Right self-injective rings in which each element is sum of two units, J. Algebra and its Appl., Vol. 6, No. 2 (2007), 281-286] who proved that every element of a right self-injective ring $R$ is the sum of two units if and only if $R$ has no factor ring isomorphic to $\mathbb Z_2$. In this paper we prove that if $R$ is a right self-injective ring, then for each element $a\in R$ there exists a unit $u\in R$ such that both $a+u$ and $a-u$ are units if and only if $R$ has no factor ring isomorphic to $\mathbb Z_2$ or $\mathbb Z_3$.

Dual automorphism-invariant modules

A module $M$ is called an automorphism-invariant module if every isomorphism between two essential submodules of $M$ extends to an automorphism of $M$. This paper introduces the notion of dual of such modules. We call a module $M$ to be a dual automorphism-invariant module if whenever $K_1$ and $K_2$ are small submodules of $M$, then any epimorphism $η:M/K_1\rightarrow M/K_2$ with small kernel lifts to an endomorphism $φ$ of $M$. In this paper we give various examples of dual automorphism-invariant module and study its properties. In particular, we study abelian groups and prove that dual automorphism-invariant abelian groups must be reduced. It is shown that over a right perfect ring $R$, a lifting right $R$-module $M$ is dual automorphism-invariant if and only if $M$ is quasi-projective.

Rings of Invariant Module Type and Automorphism-Invariant Modules

A module is called automorphism-invariant if it is invariant under any automorphism of its injective hull. In [Algebras for which every indecomposable right module is invariant in its injective envelope, Pacific J. Math., vol. 31, no. 3 (1969), 655-658] Dickson and Fuller had shown that if $R$ is a finite-dimensional algebra over a field $\mathbb F$ with more than two elements then an indecomposable automorphism-invariant right $R$-module must be quasi-injective. In this paper we show that this result fails to hold if $\mathbb F$ is a field with two elements. Dickson and Fuller had further shown that if $R$ is a finite-dimensional algebra over a field $\mathbb F$ with more than two elements, then $R$ is of right invariant module type if and only if every indecomposable right $R$-module is automorphism-invariant. We extend the result of Dickson and Fuller to any right artinian ring. A ring $R$ is said to be of right automorphism-invariant type (in short, RAI-type) if every finitely generated indecomposable right $R$-module is automorphism-invariant. In this paper we completely characterize an indecomposable right artinian ring of RAI-type.

Shorted Operators Relative to a Partial Order in a Regular Ring

In this paper, the explicit form of maximal elements, known as shorted operators, in a subring of a von Neumann regular ring has been obtained. As an application of the main theorem, the unique shorted operator (of electrical circuits) which was introduced by Anderson-Trapp has been derived.
