Carroll hydrodynamics with spin

We formulate Carroll hydrodynamics with the inclusion of a spin current. Our strategy relies on the fact that the $c\to 0$ limit of relativistic hydrodynamics yields the equations of Carroll hydrodynamics. Starting with the pre-ultralocal parametrization of the background geometry and the hydrodynamic degrees of freedom for a relativistic fluid endowed with a spin current, the $c\to 0$ limit produces Carroll hydrodynamics with spin. It is known that boost-invariant hydrodynamic models for ultrarelativistic fluids relevant for the physics of quark-gluon plasma, such as Bjorken and Gubser flow, are manifestations of Carroll hydrodynamics under appropriate geometric choices for the underlying Carrollian structure. In this work, we further this mapping between such boost-invariant models and Carroll hydrodynamics, now with the inclusion of a spin current.

The Carrollian Kaleidoscope

The Carroll group arises in the vanishing speed of light limit of the Poincar\'{e} group and was initially discarded as just a mathematical curiosity. However, recent developments have proved otherwise. Carroll and conformal Carroll symmetries are now ubiquitous, appearing in diverse physical phenomena starting from condensed matter physics to quantum gravity. This review aims to provide the reader a gateway into this fast-developing field. After an introduction and setting the stage with basics of the symmetry in question, we detail the construction of Carrollian and Carrollian Conformal field theories (CCFT). We then focus on applications. By far the most popular of these applications is in the context of the construction of holography in asymptotically flat spacetimes (AFS) in terms of a co-dimension one dual CCFT. We review the early work on AFS$_3$ /CCFT$_2$ before delving into an in-depth analysis for the construction of the dual to 4D AFS. Two other important sets of applications are in hydrodynamics and in condensed matter physics, which we discuss in detail. Carroll hydrodynamics is introduced as the $c\to 0$ limit of relativistic hydrodynamics first and then reconstructed from a symmetry based approach. Relations to ultrarelativistic flows and connections to the quark-gluon plasma are discussed with concrete examples of the Bjorken and Gubser flow models. In condensed matter applications, we cover connections to fractons, flat bands, and phase separation in Luttinger liquid models. To conclude, we give very brief outlines of other topics of interest including string theory and black hole horizons.

Causal and Stable Superfluid Hydrodynamics

We investigate the linearized stability and causality properties of relativistic viscous superfluid hydrodynamics. The Landau-Lifshitz-Clark-Putterman formulation for the theory of relativistic viscous superfluids suffers from the same instability and acausality issues as the relativistic Navier-Stokes equation for normal fluids when written in the formulations of Eckart or Landau and Lifshitz. We show that conditions to ensure stability and causality can be satisfied with judicious redefinitions of the hydrodynamic variables. The conditions we obtain hold at non-zero superfluid velocity as well.

Hydrodynamics in the Carrollian regime

Carroll hydrodynamics arises in the $c\to 0$ limit of relativistic hydrodynamics. Instances of its relevance include the Bjorken and Gubser flow models of heavy-ion collisions, where the ultrarelativistic nature of the flow makes the physics effectively Carrollian. In this paper, we explore the structure of hydrodynamics in what can be termed as the Carrollian regime, where instead of keeping only the leading terms in the $c\to 0$ limit of relativistic hydrodynamics, we perform a small-$c$ expansion and retain the subleading terms as well. We do so both for perfect fluids as well as viscous fluids incorporating first order derivative corrections. As apposite applications of the formalism, we utilize the subleading terms to compute modifications to the Bjorken and Gubser flow equations which bring in, in particular, dependence on rapidity.

Beyond Drude transport in hydrodynamic metals

In interacting theories, hydrodynamics describes the universal behavior of states close to local thermal equilibrium at late times and long distances in a gradient expansion. In the hydrodynamic regime of metals, momentum relaxes slowly with a rate $Γ$, which formally appears on the right-hand side of the momentum dynamical equation and causes a Drude-like peak in the frequency dependence of the thermoelectric conductivities. Here we study the structure and determine the physical implications of momentum-relaxing gradient corrections beyond Drude, \emph{i.e.} arising at subleading order in the gradient expansion. We find that they effectively renormalize the weight of the Drude pole in the thermoelectric conductivities, and contribute to the dc conductivities at the same order as previously-known gradient corrections of translation-invariant hydrodynamics. Turning on a magnetic field, extra derivative corrections appear and renormalize the cyclotron frequency and the Hall conductivity. This relaxed hydrodynamics provides a field-theoretic explanation for previous results obtained using gauge-gravity duality. In strongly-coupled metals where quasiparticles are short-lived and which may be close to a hydrodynamic regime, the extra contributions we discuss are essential to interpret experimentally measured magneto-thermoelectric conductivities. Specializing to metals close to a Fermi liquid phase, the effective mass measured either through the specific heat or the spectral weight of the Drude-like peak are found to differ, as was indeed reported in overdoped cuprate superconductors. More generally, we expect such terms to be present in any hydrodynamic theory with approximate symmetries, which arise in many physical systems.

Holographic complexity: braneworld gravity versus the Lloyd bound

We explore the complexity equals volume proposal for planar black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime in 2+1 dimensions, with an end of the world (ETW) brane behind the horizon. We allow for the possibility of intrinsic gravitational dynamics in the form of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity to be localized on the brane. We compute the asymptotic rate of change of volume complexity analytically and obtain the full time dependence using numerical techniques. We find that the inclusion of JT gravity on the brane leads to interesting effects on time dependence of holographic complexity. We identify the region in parameter space (the brane location and the JT coupling) for which the rate of change of complexity violates the Lloyd bound. In an equivalent description of the model in terms of an asymptotically AdS wormhole, we connect the violation of the Lloyd bound to the violation of a suitable energy condition in the bulk that we introduce. We also compare the Lloyd bound constraints to previously derived constraints on the bulk parameters in this model that are based on bounds on entanglement growth in the dual CFT state.

Releasing the CRaQAn (Coreference Resolution in Question-Answering): An open-source dataset and dataset creation methodology using instruction-following models

Instruction-following language models demand robust methodologies for information retrieval to augment instructions for question-answering applications. A primary challenge is the resolution of coreferences in the context of chunking strategies for long documents. The critical barrier to experimentation of handling coreferences is a lack of open source datasets, specifically in question-answering tasks that require coreference resolution. In this work we present our Coreference Resolution in Question-Answering (CRaQAn) dataset, an open-source dataset that caters to the nuanced information retrieval requirements of coreference resolution in question-answering tasks by providing over 250 question-answer pairs containing coreferences. To develop this dataset, we developed a novel approach for creating high-quality datasets using an instruction-following model (GPT-4) and a Recursive Criticism and Improvement Loop.

Heavy-ion collisions, Gubser flow, and Carroll hydrodynamics

Gubser flow provides an analytic model for describing the spacetime dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. Along with boost and rotation invariance along the beam axis, the model assumes invariance under a combination of translations and special conformal transformations in the transverse plane, leading to a flow profile which evolves not just along the beam axis, but also radially. We argue that Gubser flow and its associated symmetry assumptions arise naturally as a consequence of Carrollian symmetries for a conformal Carroll fluid, thereby providing a dual geometric picture for the flow. Given the inherent ultrarelativistic nature of the flow, this duality with Carroll hydrodynamics - which arises in the $c \to 0$ limit of relativistic hydrodynamics, is natural. We provide a precise map between Gubser flow and the conformal Carroll fluid, appropriate to capture the duality between the two not just at the ideal level, but also with the inclusion of hydrodynamic derivative corrections.

Carrollian Origins of Bjorken Flow

Bjorken flow is among the simplest models of fluids moving near the speed of light ($c$) while Carroll symmetry arises as a contraction of Poincaré group when $c \to 0$. We show that Bjorken flow and its phenomenological approximations are completely captured by Carrollian fluids. Carrollian symmetries arise on generic null surfaces and a fluid moving at $c$ is restricted to such a surface, thereby naturally inheriting the symmetries. Carrollian hydrodynamics is thus not exotic, but rather ubiquitous, and provides a concrete framework for fluids moving at or near the speed of light.

Bounds on gravitational brane couplings and tomography in AdS3 black hole microstates

We study information theoretic properties of planar black hole microstates in 2 + 1 dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime, modeled by black holes with an end-of-the-world brane behind the horizon. The von Neumann entropy of sufficiently large subregions in the dual CFT exhibits a time-dependent phase, which from a doubly-holographic perspective corresponds to the appearance of quantum extremal islands in the brane description. Considering the case where dilaton gravity is added to the brane, we show that tuning the associated couplings affects the propagation of information in the dual CFT state. By requiring that information theoretic bounds on the growth of entanglement entropy are satisfied in the dual CFT, we can place bounds on the allowed values of the couplings on the brane. Furthermore, we initiate the study of brane tomography, by showing how subleading corrections to the entanglement velocity can be used to learn about the properties of the brane as well as any gravitational dynamics localized on it.

Second order equilibrium transport in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills plasma via holography

A relativistic fluid in 3+1 dimensions with a global $U(1)$ symmetry admits nine independent static susceptibilities at the second order in the hydrodynamic derivative expansion, which capture the response of the fluid in thermal equilibrium to the presence of external time-independent sources. Of these, seven are time-reversal $\mathbb{T}$ invariant and can be obtained from Kubo formulas involving equilibrium two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and the $U(1)$ current. Making use of the gauge/gravity duality along with the aforementioned Kubo formulas, we compute all seven $\mathbb{T}$ invariant second order susceptibilities for the $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills plasma in the limit of large $N_c$ and at strong 't-Hooft coupling $λ$. In particular, we consider the plasma to be charged under a $U(1)$ subgroup of the global $SU(4)$ R-symmetry of the theory. We present analytic expressions for three of the seven $\mathbb{T}$ invariant susceptibilities, while the remaining four are computed numerically. The dual gravitational description for the charged plasma in thermal equilibrium in the absence of background electric and magnetic fields is provided by the asymptotically AdS$_5$ Reissner-Nordström black brane geometry. The susceptibilities are extracted by studying perturbations to the bulk geometry as well as to the bulk gauge field. We also present an estimate of the second order transport coefficient $κ$, which determines the response of the fluid to the presence of background curvature, for QCD, and compare it with previous determinations made using different techniques.

Hydrodynamic fluctuations and long-time tails in a fluid on an anisotropic background

The effective low-energy late-time description of many body systems near thermal equilibrium provided by classical hydrodynamics in terms of dissipative transport phenomena receives important corrections once the effects of stochastic fluctuations are taken into account. One such physical effect is the occurrence of long-time power law tails in correlation functions of conserved currents. In the hydrodynamic regime $\vec{k} \rightarrow 0$ this amounts to non-analytic dependence of the correlation functions on the frequency $ω$. In this article, we consider a relativistic fluid with a conserved global $U(1)$ charge in the presence of a strong background magnetic field, and compute the long-time tails in correlation functions of the stress tensor. The presence of the magnetic field renders the system anisotropic. In the absence of the magnetic field, there are three out-of-equilibrium transport parameters that arise at the first order in the hydrodynamic derivative expansion, all of which are dissipative. In the presence of a background magnetic field, there are ten independent out-of-equilibrium transport parameters at the first order, three of which are non-dissipative and the rest are dissipative. We provide the most general linearized equations about a given state of thermal equilibrium involving the various transport parameters in the presence of a magnetic field, and use them to compute the long-time tails for the fluid.

Hydrodynamic effective field theory and the analyticity of hydrostatic correlators

We study one-loop corrections to retarded and symmetric hydrostatic correlation functions within the Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory framework for relativistic hydrodynamics, focusing on charge diffusion. We first consider the simplified setup with only diffusive charge density fluctuations, and then augment it with momentum fluctuations in a model where the sound modes can be ignored. We show that the loop corrections, which generically induce non-analyticities and long-range effects at finite frequency, non-trivially preserve analyticity of retarded correlation functions in spatial momentum due to the KMS constraint, as a manifestation of thermal screening. For the purposes of this analysis, we develop an interacting field theory for diffusive hydrodynamics, seen as a limit of relativistic hydrodynamics in the absence of temperature and longitudinal velocity fluctuations.

Einstein's Equations in Matter

Einstein's equations in matter are gravitational analogues of Maxwell's equations in matter, providing an effective classical description of gravitational fields. We derive Einstein's equations in matter for relativistic fluids, and use them to illustrate how the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are modified by the matter's response to curvature. For a gas of massive fermions, we evaluate how the effective Newton's constant and other susceptibilities depend on the temperature and density. In anti-de Sitter space, we study the $O(1/(T\ell)^2)$ corrections to the geometries sourced by perfect fluids, and illustrate the breakdown of hydrostatics in AdS at small temperatures.

Scattering Amplitudes in $\mathcal{N} = 3$ Supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons-Matter Theory at Large $N$

We study $\mathcal{N} = 3$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theory coupled to matter in the fundamental representation of $SU(N)$. In the 't Hooft large $N$ limit, we compute the exact $2 \to 2$ scattering amplitudes of the fundamental scalar superfields to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling $λ$. Our computations are presented in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ superspace and make significant use of the residual $SO(2)_R$ symmetry in order to solve for the exact four-point correlator of the scalar superfields. By taking the on-shell limit, we are able to extract the exact $2 \to 2$ scattering amplitudes of bosons/fermions in the symmetric, anti-symmetric and adjoint channels of scattering. We find that the scattering amplitude of the $\mathcal{N} = 3$ theory in the planar limit is tree-level exact to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling $λ$. The result is consistent with the conjectured bosonization duality and is expected to have enhanced symmetry structures such as dual superconformal symmetry and Yangian symmetry.

Performance of NavIC for studying the ionosphere at an EIA region in India

This paper emphasizes on NavIC's performance in ionospheric studies over the Indian subcontinent region. The study is performed using data of one year (2017-18) at IIT Indore, a location near the northern crest of Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA). It has been observed that even without the individual error corrections, the results are within $\pm20\%$ of NavIC VTEC estimates observed over the 1\ensuremath{^{\circ}} x 1\ensuremath{^{\circ}} grid of IPP surrounding the GPS VTEC estimates for most of the time. Additionally, ionospheric response during two distinct geomagnetic storms (September 08 and 28, 2017) at the same location and other IGS stations covering the Indian subcontinent using both GPS and NavIC has also been presented. This analysis revealed similar variations in TEC during the geomagnetic storms of September 2017, indicating the suitability of NavIC to study space weather events along with the ionospheric studies over the Indian subcontinent.

Equilibrium thermodynamic susceptibilities for a dense degenerate Dirac field

Parity preserving relativistic fluids in four spacetime dimensions admit seven independent thermodynamic susceptibilities at the second order in the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. We compute all parity-even second order thermodynamic susceptibilities for a free massive Dirac field at zero temperature and a nonzero chemical potential, based on the Kubo formulas reported in P. Kovtun and A. Shukla, Kubo formulas for thermodynamic transport coefficients, J. High Energy Phys. 10 (2018) 007. We also compute the second order constitutive relations for the energy-momentum tensor and the conserved current in the absence of external gauge fields.

Mass-deformed $\mathcal{N} = 3$ Supersymmetric Chern-Simons-Matter Theory

The maximal extension of supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory coupled to fundamental matter has $\mathcal{N} = 3$ supersymmetry. In this short note, we provide the explicit form of the action for the mass-deformed $\mathcal{N} = 3$ supersymmetric $U(N)$ Chern-Simons-Matter theory. The theory admits a unique triplet mass deformation term consistent with supersymmetry. We explicitly construct the mass-deformed $\mathcal{N} = 3$ theory in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ superspace using a fundamental and an anti-fundamental superfield.
