Normalization of D-instanton Amplitudes

D-instanton amplitudes suffer from various infrared divergences associated with tachyonic or massless open string modes, leading to ambiguous contribution to string amplitudes. It has been shown previously that string field theory can resolve these ambiguities and lead to unambiguous expressions for D-instanton contributions to string amplitudes, except for an overall normalization constant that remains undetermined. In this paper we show that string field theory, together with the world-sheet description of the amplitudes, can also fix this normalization constant. We apply our analysis to the special case of two dimensional string theory, obtaining results in agreement with the matrix model results obtained by Balthazar, Rodriguez and Yin.

Cutkosky Rules and Unitarity (Violation) in D-instanton Amplitudes

In perturbative amplitudes in quantum field theory and string field theory, Cutkosky rule expresses the anti-hermitian part of a Feynman diagram in terms of sum over all its cut diagrams, and this in turn is used to prove unitarity of the theory. For D-instanton contribution to a string theory amplitude, the cutting rule needed for the proof of unitarity is somewhat different; we need to sum over only those cut diagrams for which all the world-sheet boundaries ending on some particular D-instanton lie on the same side of the cut. By working with the closed string effective action, obtained after integrating out the open string modes, we prove that the D-instanton amplitudes actually satisfy these cutting rules, provided the effective action is real. The violation of unitarity in the closed string sector of two dimensional string theory can be traced to the failure of this reality condition. In the critical superstring theory, multi-instanton and multi anti-instanton amplitudes satisfy the reality condition. Contribution to the amplitudes from the instanton anti-instanton sector satisfies the reality condition if we make a specific choice of integration cycle over the configuration space of string fields, whereas contribution due to the non-BPS D-instantons will need to either vanish or have an overall real normalization in order for it to give real contribution. We use Picard-Lefschetz theory to argue that these conditions are indeed satisfied in superstring theories.

Bhargava's Cube and Black Hole Charges

Black holes in a class of string compactifications, known as STU models, carry four electric and four magnetic charges. Furthermore a duality group, given by the product of three congruence subgroups of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$, acts on these integer valued charges. By placing these eight charges at the eight corners of a Bhargava cube, we provide a classification of the duality orbits in these theories.

D-instanton Perturbation Theory

D-instanton world-volume theory has open string zero modes describing collective coordinates of the instanton. The usual perturbative amplitudes in the D-instanton background suffer from infra-red divergences due to the presence of these zero modes, and the usual approach of analytic continuation in momenta does not work since all open string states on a D-instanton carry strictly zero momentum. String field theory is well-suited for tackling these issues. However we find a new subtlety due to the existence of additional zero modes in the ghost sector. This causes a breakdown of the Siegel gauge, but a different gauge fixing consistent with the BV formalism renders the perturbation theory finite and unambiguous. At each order, this produces extra contribution to the amplitude besides what is obtained from integration over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces.

Proof of the Classical Soft Graviton Theorem in D=4

Classical subleading soft graviton theorem in four space-time dimensions determines the gravitational wave-form at late and early retarded time, generated during a scattering or explosion, in terms of the four momenta of the ingoing and outgoing objects. This result was `derived' earlier by taking the classical limit of the quantum soft graviton theorem, and making some assumptions about how to deal with the infrared divergences of the soft factor. In this paper we give a direct proof of this result by analyzing the classical equations of motion of gravity coupled to matter. We also extend the result to the electromagnetic wave-form generated during scattering of charged particles, and present a new conjecture on subsubleading corrections to the gravitational wave-form at early and late retarded time.

Divergent to Complex Amplitudes in Two Dimensional String Theory

In a recent paper, Balthazar, Rodriguez and Yin found remarkable agreement between the one instanton contribution to the scattering amplitudes of two dimensional string theory and those in the matrix model to the first subleading order. The comparison was carried out numerically by analytically continuing the external energies to imaginary values, since for real energies the string theory result diverges. We use insights from string field theory to give finite expressions for the string theory amplitudes for real energies. We also show analytically that the imaginary parts of the string theory amplitudes computed this way reproduce the full matrix model results for general scattering amplitudes involving multiple closed strings.

Fixing an Ambiguity in Two Dimensional String Theory Using String Field Theory

In a recent paper, Balthazar, Rodriguez and Yin found some remarkable agreement between the results of c=1 matrix model and D-instanton corrections in two dimensional string theory. Their analysis left undetermined two constants in the string theory computation which had to be fixed by comparing the results with the matrix model results. One of these constants is affected by possible renormalization of the D-instanton action that needs to be computed separately. In this paper we fix the other constant by reformulating the world-sheet analysis in the language of string field theory.

Superstring Field Theory with Open and Closed Strings

We construct Lorentz invariant and gauge invariant 1PI effective action for closed and open superstrings and demonstrate that it satisfies the classical BV master equation. We also construct the quantum master action for this theory satisfying the quantum BV master equation and generalize the construction to unoriented theories. The extra free field needed for the construction of closed superstring field theory plays a crucial role in coupling the closed strings to D-branes and orientifold planes.

Classical and Quantum Results on Logarithmic Terms in the Soft Theorem in Four Dimensions

We explore the logarithmic terms in the soft theorem in four dimensions by analyzing classical scattering with generic incoming and outgoing states and one loop quantum scattering amplitudes. The classical and quantum results are consistent with each other. Although most of our analysis in quantum theory is carried out for one loop amplitudes in a theory of (charged) scalars interacting via gravitational and electromagnetic interactions, we expect the results to be valid more generally.

Self-dual forms: Action, Hamiltonian and Compactification

It has been shown that, by adding an extra free field that decouples from the dynamics, one can construct actions for interacting 2n-form fields with self-dual field strengths in 4n+2 dimensions. In this paper we analyze canonical formulation of these theories, and show that the resulting Hamiltonian reduces to the sum of two Hamiltonians with independent degrees of freedom. One of them is free and has no physical consequence, while the other contains the physical degrees of freedom with the desired interactions. For the special cases of chiral scalars in two dimensions and chiral two form fields in six dimensions, we discuss compactification of these theories respectively on a circle and a two dimensional torus, and show that we recover the expected properties of these systems, including S-duality invariance in four dimensions.

A Classical Proof of the Classical Soft Graviton Theorem in D>4

Classical soft graviton theorem gives an expression for the spectrum of low frequency gravitational radiation, emitted during a classical scattering process, in terms of the trajectories and spin angular momenta of ingoing and outgoing objects, including hard radiation. This has been proved to subleading order in the expansion in powers of frequency by taking the classical limit of the quantum soft graviton theorem. In this paper we give a direct proof of this result by analyzing the classical equations of motion of a generic theory of gravity coupled to interacting matter in space-time dimensions larger than four.

Analyticity and Crossing Symmetry of Superstring Loop Amplitudes

Bros, Epstein and Glaser proved crossing symmetry of the S-matrix of a theory without massless fields by using certain analyticity properties of the off-shell momentum space Green's function in the complex momentum plane. The latter properties follow from representing the momentum space Green's function as Fourier transform of the position space Green's function, satisfying certain properties implied by the underlying local quantum field theory. We prove the same analyticity properties of the momentum space Green's functions in superstring field theory by directly working with the momentum space Feynman rules even though the corresponding properties of the position space Green's function are not known. Our result is valid to all orders in perturbation theory, but requires, as usual, explicitly subtracting / regulating the non-analyticities associated with massless particles. These results can also be used to prove other general analyticity properties of the S-matrix of superstring theory.

String Field Theory as World-sheet UV Regulator

Even at tree level, the first quantized string theory suffers from apparent short distance singularities associated with collision of vertex operators that prevent us from straightforward numerical computation of various quantities. Examples include string theory S-matrix for generic external momenta and computation of the spectrum of string theory under a marginal deformation of the world-sheet theory. The former requires us to define the S-matrix via analytic continuation or as limits of contour integrals in complexified moduli space, while the latter requires us to use an ultraviolet cut-off at intermediate steps. In contrast, string field theory does not suffer from such divergences. In this paper we show how string field theory can be used to generate an explicit algorithm for computing tree level amplitudes in any string theory that does not suffer from any short distance divergence from integration over the world-sheet variables. We also use string field theory to compute second order mass shift of string states under a marginal deformation without having to use any cut-off at intermediate steps. We carry out the analysis in a broad class of string field theories, thereby making it manifest that the final results are independent of the extra data that go into the formulation of string field theory. We also comment on the generalization of this analysis to higher genus amplitudes.

Logarithmic Terms in the Soft Expansion in Four Dimensions

It has been shown that in larger than four space-time dimensions, soft factors that relate the amplitudes with a soft photon or graviton to amplitudes without the soft particle also determine the low frequency radiative part of the electromagnetic and gravitational fields during classical scattering. In four dimensions the S-matrix becomes infrared divergent making the usual definition of the soft factor ambiguous beyond the leading order. However the radiative parts of the electromagnetic and gravitational fields provide an unambiguous definition of soft factor in the classical limit up to the usual gauge ambiguity. We show that the soft factor defined this way develops terms involving logarithm of the energy of the soft particle at the subleading order in the soft expansion.

Cutkosky Rules for Superstring Field Theory

Superstring field theory expresses the perturbative S-matrix of superstring theory as a sum of Feynman diagrams each of which is manifestly free from ultraviolet divergences. The interaction vertices fall off exponentially for large space-like external momenta making the ultraviolet finiteness property manifest, but blow up exponentially for large time-like external momenta making it impossible to take the integration contours for loop energies to lie along the real axis. This forces us to carry out the integrals over the loop energies by choosing appropriate contours in the complex plane whose ends go to infinity along the imaginary axis but which take complicated form in the interior navigating around the various poles of the propagators. We consider the general class of quantum field theories with this property and prove Cutkosky rules for the amplitudes to all orders in perturbation theory. Besides having applications to string field theory, these results also give an alternative derivation of Cutkosky rules in ordinary quantum field theories.

Unitarity of the Box Diagram

The complete proof of cutting rules needed for proving perturbative unitarity of quantum field theories usually employs the largest time equation or old fashioned perturbation theory. None of these can be generalized to string field theory that has non-local vertices. In arXiv:1604.01783 we gave a proof of cutting rules in string field theory, which also provides an alternative proof of cutting rules in ordinary quantum field theories. In this note we illustrate how this works for the box diagram of $ϕ^4$ field theory, avoiding the contributions from anomalous thresholds.

Gravity Waves from Soft Theorem in General Dimensions

Classical limit of multiple soft graviton theorem can be used to compute the angular power spectrum of long wavelength gravitational radiation in classical scattering provided the total energy carried away by the radiation is small compared to the energies of the scatterers. We could ensure this either by taking the limit in which the impact parameter is large compared to the Schwarzschild radii of the scatterers, or by taking the probe limit where one object (the probe) has mass much smaller than the other object (the scatterer). We compute the results to subsubleading order in soft momentum and test them using explicit examples involving classical scattering. Our analysis also generalizes to the case where there are multiple objects involved in the scattering and the objects exchange mass, fragment or fuse into each other during the scattering. A similar analysis can be carried out for soft photons to subleading order, reproducing standard textbook results. We also discuss the modification of soft expansion in four dimensions beyond the leading order due to infrared divergences.
