Topological Entanglement Entropy of Z2 Spin liquids and Lattice Laughlin states

We study entanglement properties of candidate wave-functions for SU(2) symmetric gapped spin liquids and Laughlin states. These wave-functions are obtained by the Gutzwiller projection technique. Using Topological Entanglement Entropy γ as a tool, we establish topological order in chiral spin liquid and Z2 spin liquid wave-functions, as well as a lattice version of the Laughlin state. Our results agree very well with the field theoretic result γ=log D where D is the total quantum dimension of the phase. All calculations are done using a Monte Carlo technique on a 12 times 12 lattice enabling us to extract γ with small finite size effects. For a chiral spin liquid wave-function, the calculated value is within 4% of the ideal value. We also find good agreement for a lattice version of the Laughlin ν=1/3 phase with the expected γ=log \sqrt{3}.

Entanglement entropy of critical spin liquids

Quantum spin liquids are phases of matter whose internal structure is not captured by a local order parameter. Particularly intriguing are critical spin liquids, where strongly interacting excitations control low energy properties. Here we calculate their bipartite entanglement entropy that characterize their quantum structure. In particular we calculate the Renyi entropy $S_2$, on model wavefunctions obtained by Gutzwiller projection of a Fermi sea. Although the wavefunctions are not sign positive, $S_2$ can be calculated on relatively large systems (>324 spins), using the variational Monte Carlo technique. On the triangular lattice we find that entanglement entropy of the projected Fermi-sea state violates the boundary law, with $S_2$ enhanced by a logarithmic factor. This is an unusual result for a bosonic wave-function reflecting the presence of emergent fermions. These techniques can be extended to study a wide class of other phases.

Equality of bulk wave functions and edge correlations in topological superconductors: A spacetime derivation

For certain systems, the N-particle ground-state wavefunctions of the bulk happen to be exactly equal to the N-point space-time correlation functions at the edge, in the infrared limit. We show why this had to be so for a class of topological superconductors, beginning with the p+ip state in D=2+1. Varying the chemical potential as a function of Euclidean time between weak and strong pairing states is shown to extract the wavefunction. Then a Euclidean rotation that exchanges time and space and approximate Lorentz invariance lead to the edge connection. We illustrate straightforward extension to other dimensions (eg. 3He- B phase in D=3+1) and to correlated states like fractionalized topological superconductors.

Computational Design of Axion Insulators Based on 5d Spinels Compounds

Based on density functional calculation with LDA+U method, we propose that hypothetical Osmium compounds such as CaOs2O4 and SrOs2O4 can be stabilized in the geometrically frustrated spinel crystal structure. They also show some exotic electronic and magnetic properties in a reasonable range of on-site Coulomb correlation U such as ferromagnetism and orbital magnetoelectric effect characteristic to Axion electrodynamics. Other electronic phases including 3D Dirac metal and Mott insulator exist and would make perspective 5d spinels ideal for applications.

Quantized Response and Topology of Insulators with Inversion Symmetry

We study three dimensional insulators with inversion symmetry, in which other point group symmetries, such as time reversal, are generically absent. Their band topology is found to be classified by the parities of occupied states at time reversal invariant momenta (TRIM parities), and by three Chern numbers. The TRIM parities of any insulator must satisfy a constraint: their product must be +1. The TRIM parities also constrain the Chern numbers modulo two. When the Chern numbers vanish, a magneto-electric response parameterized by "theta" is defined and is quantized to theta= 0, 2pi. Its value is entirely determined by the TRIM parities. These results may be useful in the search for magnetic topological insulators with large theta. A classification of inversion symmetric insulators is also given for general dimensions. An alternate geometrical derivation of our results is obtained by using the entanglement spectrum of the ground state wave-function.

Electronic Structure of Pyrochlore Iridates: From Topological Dirac Metal to Mott Insulator

In 5d transition metal oxides such as the iridates, novel properties arise from the interplay of electron correlations and spin-orbit interactions. We investigate the electronic structure of the pyrochlore iridates, (such as Y$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$) using density functional theory, LDA+U method, and effective low energy models. A remarkably rich phase diagram emerges on tuning the correlation strength U. The Ir magnetic moment are always found to be non-collinearly ordered. However, the ground state changes from a magnetic metal at weak U, to a Mott insulator at large U. Most interestingly, the intermediate U regime is found to be a Dirac semi-metal, with vanishing density of states at the Fermi energy. It also exhibits topological properties - manifested by special surface states in the form of Fermi arcs, that connect the bulk Dirac points. This Dirac phase, a three dimensional analog of graphene, is proposed as the ground state of Y$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and related compounds. A narrow window of magnetic `axion' insulator, with axion parameter $θ=π$, may also be present at intermediate U. An applied magnetic field induces ferromagnetic order and a metallic ground state.

Anomalous Zeeman response in coexisting phase of superconductivity and spin-density wave as a probe of extended $s$-wave pairing structure in ferro-pnictide

In several members of the ferro-pnictides, spin density wave (SDW) order coexists with superconductivity over a range of dopings. In this letter we study the anomalous magnetic Zeeman response of this coexistence state and show that it can be used to confirm the extended s-wave gap structure as well as structure of superconducting (SC) gap in coexisting phase. On increasing the field, a strongly anisotropic reduction of SC gap is found. The anisotropy is directly connected to the gap structure of superconducting phase. The signature of this effect in quasiparticle interference measured by STM, as well as heat transport in magnetic field is discussed. For the compounds with the nodal SC gap we show that the nodes are removed upon formation of SDW. Interestingly the size of the generated gap in the originally nodal areas is anisotropic in the position of the nodes over the Fermi surface in direct connection with the form of SC pairing.

Anomalous Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations from topological insulator surface states

We study transport properties of a topological insulator nanowire when a magnetic field is applied along its length. We predict that with strong surface disorder, a characteristic signature of the band topology is revealed in Aharonov Bohm (AB) oscillations of the conductance. These oscillations have a component with anomalous period $Φ_0=hc/e$, and with conductance maxima at odd multiples of $\frac12Φ_0$, i.e. when the AB phase for surface electrons is $π$. This is intimately connected to the band topology and a surface curvature induced Berry phase, special to topological insulator surfaces. We discuss similarities and differences from recent experiments on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ nanoribbons, and optimal conditions for observing this effect.

Fermionic Hopf solitons and Berry's phase in topological surface superconductors

A central theme in many body physics is emergence - new properties arise when several particles are brought together. Particularly fascinating is the idea that the quantum statistics may be an emergent property. This was first noted in the Skyrme model of nuclear matter, where a theory formulated entirely in terms of a bosonic order parameter field contains fermionic excitations. These excitations are smooth field textures, and believed to describe neutrons and protons. We argue that a similar phenomenon occurs in topological insulators when superconductivity gaps out their surface states. Here, a smooth texture is naturally described by a three component real vector. Two components describe superconductivity, while the third captures the band topology. Such a vector field can assume a 'knotted' configuration in three dimensional space - the Hopf texture - that cannot smoothly be unwound. Here we show that the Hopf texture is a fermion. To describe the resulting state, the regular Landau-Ginzburg theory of superconductivity must be augmented by a topological Berry phase term. When the Hopf texture is the cheapest fermionic excitation, striking consequences for tunneling experiments are predicted.

Chiral Topological Insulators, Superconductors and other competing orders in three dimensions

We discuss the proximate phases of a three-dimensional system with Dirac-like dispersion. Using the cubic lattice with plaquette $π$-flux as a model, we find, among others phases, a chiral topological insulator and singlet topological superconductor. While the former requires a special "chiral" symmetry, the latter is stable as long as time reversal and SU(2) spin rotation symmetry are present. These phases are characterized by stable surface Dirac fermion modes, and by an integer topological invariant in the bulk. The key features of these phases are readily understood in a two dimensional limit with an appropriate pairing of Dirac nodes between layers. This Dirac node-pairing picture is also shown to apply to $Z_2$ topological insulators protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). The nature of point-like topological defects in these phases is also investigated, revealing an interesting duality relation between these topological phases and the Neel phase.

Composite Fermions and Quantum Hall Stripes on the Topological Insulator Surface

We study the problem of a single Dirac fermion in a quantizing orbital magnetic field, when the chemical potential is at the Dirac point. This can be realized on the surface of a topological insulator, such as Bi2Se3, tuned to neutrality. We study the effect of both long range Coulomb interactions (strength alpha=e^2/(epsilon hbar v_F).) and local repulsion U which capture the effect of electron correlations. Interactions resolve the degeneracy of free fermions in the zeroth Landau level at half filling, but in a manner different from that in graphene. For weak interactions, U=0 and alpha<<1, a composite Fermi liquid is expected. However, in the limit of strong local correlations (large U but alpha<<1), a charge density wave phase is predicted, which we term "axion stripe". While reminiscent of quantum Hall stripe phases, its wavelength is parametrically larger than the magnetic length, and the induced fermion mass term (axion) also oscillates with the charge density. This phase is destroyed by sufficiently strong Zeeman coupling. A phase diagram is constructed and consequences for experiments are discussed.

Band Topology of Insulators via the Entanglement Spectrum

How do we uniquely identify a quantum phase, given its ground state wave-function? This is a key question for many body theory especially when we consider phases like topological insulators, that share the same symmetry but differ at the level of topology. The entanglement spectrum has been proposed as a ground state property that captures characteristic edge excitations. Here we study the entanglement spectrum for topological band insulators. We first show that insulators with topological surface states will necessarily also have protected modes in the entanglement spectrum. Surprisingly, however, the converse is not true. Protected entanglement modes can also appear for insulators without physical surface states, in which case they capture a more elusive property. This is illustrated by considering insulators with only inversion symmetry. Inversion is shown to act in an unusual way, as an antiunitary operator, on the entanglement spectrum, leading to this protection. The entanglement degeneracies indicate a variety of different phases in inversion symmetric insulators, and these phases are argued to be robust to the introduction of interactions.

Phase Transitions of S=1 Spinor Condensates in an Optical Lattice

We study the phase diagram of spin-one polar condensates in a two dimensional optical lattice with magnetic anisotropy. We show that the topological binding of vorticity to nematic disclinations allows for a rich variety of phase transitions. These include Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transitions with a superfluid stiffness jump that can be experimentally tuned to take a continuous set of values, and a new cascaded Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, characterized by two divergent length scales. For higher integer spin bosons S, the thermal phase transition out of the planar polar phase is strongly affected by the parity of S.

A Z$_2$ spin-orbital liquid state in the square lattice Kugel-Khomskii model

We argue for the existence of a liquid ground state in a class of square lattice models of orbitally degenerate insulators. Starting with the SU(4) symmetric Kugel-Khomskii model, we utilize a Majorana Fermion representation of spin-orbital operators to access novel phases. Variational wavefunctions of candidate liquid phases are thus obtained, whose properties are evaluated using Variational Monte Carlo. These states are disordered, and are found to have excellent energetics and ground state overlap ($>40%$) when compared with exact diagonalization on 16 site clusters. We conclude that these are spin-orbital liquid ground states with emergent nodal fermions and Z$_2$ gauge fields. Connections to spin 3/2 cold atom systems and properties in the absence of SU(4) symmetry are briefly discussed.

Quantum liquid crystals in imbalanced Fermi gas: fluctuations and fractional vortices in Larkin-Ovchinnikov states

We develop a low-energy model of a unidirectional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state. Because the underlying rotational and translational symmetries are broken spontaneously, this gapless superfluid is a smectic liquid crystal, that exhibits fluctuations that are qualitatively stronger than in a conventional superfluid, thus requiring a fully nonlinear description of its Goldstone modes. Consequently, at nonzero temperature the LO superfluid is an algebraic phase even in 3d. It exhibits half-integer vortex-dislocation defects, whose unbinding leads to transitions to a superfluid nematic and other phases. In 2d at nonzero temperature, the LO state is always unstable to a charge-4 nematic superfluid. We expect this superfluid liquid-crystal phenomenology to be realizable in imbalanced resonant Fermi gases trapped isotropically.

Kinetic Magnetism and Orbital Order in Iron Telluride

Iron telluride (FeTe), a relative of the iron based high temperature superconductors, displays unusual magnetic order and structural transitions. Here we explore the idea that strong correlations may play an important role in these materials. We argue that the unusual orders observed in FeTe can be understood from a picture of correlated local moments with orbital degeneracy, coupled to a small density of itinerant electrons. A component of the structural transition is attributed to orbital, rather than magnetic ordering, introducing a strongly anisotropic character to the system along the diagonal directions of the iron lattice. Double exchange interactions couple the diagonal chains leading to the observed ordering wavevector. The incommensurate order in samples with excess iron arises from electron doping in this scenario. The strong anisotropy of physical properties in the ordered phase should be detectable by transport in single domains. Predictions for ARPES, inelastic neutron scattering and hole/electron doping studies are also made.

Topological insulators in three dimensions from spontaneous symmetry breaking

We study three dimensional systems where strong repulsion leads to an insulating state via spontaneously generated spin-orbit interactions. We discuss a microscopic model where the resulting state is topological. Such topological `Mott' insulators differ from their band insulator counterparts in that they possess an additional order parameter, a rotation matrix, that describes the spontaneous breaking of spin-rotation symmetry. We show that line defects of this order are associated with protected one dimensional modes in the {\em strong} topological Mott insulator, which provides a bulk characterization of this phase.

Nodal Spin Density Wave and band topology of the FeAs based materials

The recently discovered FeAs-based materials exhibit a $(π,0)$ Spin Density Wave (SDW) in the undoped state, which gives way to superconductivity upon doping. Here we show that due to an interesting topological feature of the band structure, the SDW state cannot acquire a full gap. This is demonstrated within the SDW mean-field theory of both a simplified two band model and a more realistic 5-band model. The positions of the nodes are different in the two models and can be used to detected the validity of each model.
