Loiter UAV Reinsertion Guidance for Fixed-wing UAV Corridors

This paper considers fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) corridors comprising a main lane, a circular loiter lane for managing traffic congestion, and transit lanes connecting the two. In particular, we address the problem of conflict-free reinsertion of UAVs from the loiter lane back into the main lane. The loiter lane contains a fixed number of equidistant virtual slots that UAVs can occupy. Reinsertion of loiter UAVs into the main lane becomes essential either due to reduced traffic in the main lane or due to a loiter UAV needing to reach its destination urgently. Given the total number of loiter slots, UAV speed limits, and the minimum safety distance, a guidance algorithm is developed to compute the required speed of a loiter UAV in the transit lane to ensure safe reinsertion. The proposed guidance and automation strategies are validated through numerical simulations.

Slot-hopping Enabled Loiter Guidance and Automation for Fixed-wing UAV Corridors

This paper addresses the problem of traffic congestion management in fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) corridors by further developing a recently introduced loiter-lane framework. A semi-cooperative guidance strategy is developed for inserting fixed-wing UAVs into a loiter lane with minimal disruption to the UAVs already operating within it, while enabling a more compact fixed-wing UAV corridor. Building on the concepts of cooperative and non-disruptive loiter-lane insertion, the proposed strategy makes the incoming UAV first attempt, within its speed bounds, to rendezvous with an existing empty loiter slot. If direct insertion is infeasible, a minimal number of loitering UAVs perform coordinated slot hopping to create a suitably positioned empty slot. The feasibility and performance of the method are demonstrated through numerical simulations.

Multi-UAV Path Following using Vector-Field Guidance

This paper presents a decentralized, collision-free framework for path following guidance of multiple uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), while maintaining uniform spacing along a reference path. A vector field-based guidance law is employed to drive each UAV toward the reference path. A rotational repulsion mechanism, utilizing relative distance and bearing between UAVs, is proposed to avoid collisions during convergence to the path, and an inter-UAV spacing error-based velocity control law is presented to achieve uniform separation along the path. Analytical guarantees are established for collision avoidance and convergence of the inter-UAV spacing errors to zero, ensuring uniform separation along the path. Numerical simulations demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

Latent Space Reinforcement Learning for Multi-Robot Exploration

Autonomous mapping of unknown environments is a critical challenge, particularly in scenarios where time is limited. Multi-agent systems can enhance efficiency through collaboration, but the scalability of motion-planning algorithms remains a key limitation. Reinforcement learning has been explored as a solution, but existing approaches are constrained by the limited input size required for effective learning, restricting their applicability to discrete environments. This work addresses that limitation by leveraging autoencoders to perform dimensionality reduction, compressing high-fidelity occupancy maps into latent state vectors while preserving essential spatial information. Additionally, we introduce a novel procedural generation algorithm based on Perlin noise, designed to generate topologically complex training environments that simulate asteroid fields, caves and forests. These environments are used for training the autoencoder and the navigation algorithm using a hierarchical deep reinforcement learning framework for decentralized coordination. We introduce a weighted consensus mechanism that modulates reliance on shared data via a tuneable trust parameter, ensuring robustness to accumulation of errors. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system scales effectively with number of agents and generalizes well to unfamiliar, structurally distinct environments and is resilient in communication-constrained settings.

Closing Speed Computation using Stereo Camera and Applications in Unsignalized T-Intersection

This letter presents a conflict resolution strategy for an autonomous vehicle mounted with a stereo camera approaching an unsignalized T-intersection. A mathematical model for uncertainty in stereo camera depth measurements is considered and an analysis establishes the proposed adaptive depth sampling logic which guarantees an upper bound on the computed closing speed. Further, a collision avoidance logic is proposed that utilizes the closing speed bound and generates a safe trajectory plan based on the convex hull property of a quadratic Bézier curve-based reference path. Realistic validation studies are presented with neighboring vehicle trajectories generated using Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) dataset.

Quadrotor Guidance for Window Traversal: A Bearings-Only Approach

This paper focuses on developing a bearings-only measurement-based three-dimensional window traversal guidance method for quadrotor Uninhabitated Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The desired flight path and heading angles of the quadrotor are proposed as functions of the bearing angle information of the four vertices of the window. These angular guidance inputs employ a bearing angle bisector term and an elliptic shaping angle term, which directs the quadrotor towards the centroid of the window. Detailed stability analysis of the resulting kinematics demonstrates that all quadrotor trajectories lead to the centroid of the window along a direction which is normal to the window plane. A qualitative comparison with existing traversal methodologies showcases the superiority of the proposed guidance approach with regard to the nature of information, computations for generating the guidance commands, and flexibility of replanning the traversal path. Realistic simulations considering six degree-of-freedom quadrotor model and Monte Carlo studies validate the effectiveness, accuracy, and robustness of the proposed guidance solution. Representative flight validation trials are carried out using an indoor motion capture system.

Cooperative Target Capture using Voronoi Region Shaping

This paper discusses a cooperative strategy for capturing a target using multiple pursuers in a planar scenario. Given an initial position distribution of pursuers, the Voronoi Diagram is employed to characterize the target's proximity region. The key idea is to dynamically shape that region using a policy that directs its vertices towards its instantaneous centroid. Analysis of the resulting dynamics deduces the velocity control inputs for the pursuers. As the main result, target's proximity region is shown to shrink exponentially irrespective of its speed and evasion policy. Simulation results demonstrate the characteristics of the proposed method.

A Novel Convex Layers Strategy for Circular Formation in Multi-Agent Systems

This article considers the problem of conflict-free distribution of point-sized agents on a circular periphery encompassing all agents. The two key elements of the proposed policy include the construction of a set of convex layers (nested convex polygons) using the initial positions of the agents, and a novel search space region for each of the agents. The search space for an agent on a convex layer is defined as the region enclosed between the lines passing through the agent's position and normal to its supporting edges. Guaranteeing collision-free paths, a goal assignment policy designates a unique goal position within the search space of an agent at the initial time itself, requiring no further computation thereafter. In contrast to the existing literature, this work presents a one-shot, collision-free solution to the circular distribution problem by utilizing only the initial positions of the agents. Illustrative examples and extensive Monte-Carlo studies considering various practical attributes demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

CORRIDRONE: Corridors for Drones, An Adaptive On-Demand Multi-Lane Design and Testbed

In this article, a novel drone skyway framework called CORRIDRONE is proposed. As the name suggests, this represents virtual air corridors for point-to-point safe passage of multiple drones. The corridors are not permanent but can be set up on demand. A few such scenarios could be those in warehouse/factory floors, package delivery, shore-to-ship delivery, border patrol, etc. Several factors play major roles in the planning and design of such aerial passages. The proposed framework includes many novel features which aid safe and efficient integration of UAVs into the airspace with already available technologies. A several kilometres long test bed is proposed to be set-up at the 1500 acres Challekere campus of Indian Institute of Science, in the state of Karnataka, to design and test the infrastructure required for CORRIDRONE.

Multi-vehicle Path Following using Modified Trajectory Shaping Guidance

In this paper, we formulate a virtual target-based path following guidance law aimed towards multi-vehicle path following problem. The guidance law is well suited to precisely follow circular paths while minting desired distance between two adjacent vehicles where path information is only available to the lead vehicle. We analytically show lateral and longitudnal stability and convergence on the path. This is also validated through simulation and experimental results.
