Breakdown of the Peierls substitution for the Haldane model with ultracold atoms

We present two independent calculations of the tight-binding parameters for a specific realization of the Haldane model with ultracold atoms. The tunneling coefficients up to next-to-nearest neighbors are computed ab-initio by using the maximally localized Wannier functions, and compared to analytical expressions written in terms of gauge invariant, measurable properties of the spectrum. The two approaches present a remarkable agreement and evidence the breakdown of the Peierls substitution: (i) the phase acquired by the next-to-nearest tunneling amplitude $t_{1}$ presents quantitative and qualitative differences with respect to that obtained by the integral of the vector field A, as considered in the Peierls substitution, even in the regime of low amplitudes of A; (ii) for larger values, also $|t_{1}|$ and the nearest-neighbor tunneling $t_{0}$ have a marked dependence on A. The origin of this behavior and its implications are discussed.

Spin-flip transitions and departure from the Rashba model in the Au(111) surface

We present a detailed analysis of the spin-flip excitations induced by a periodic time-dependent electric field in the Rashba prototype Au(111) noble metal surface. Our calculations incorporate the full spinor structure of the spin-polarized surface states and employ a Wannier-based scheme for the spin-flip matrix elements. We find that the spin-flip excitations associated with the surface states exhibit an important angular modulation which is completely absent in the standard Rashba model \cite{rashba}. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the maximum of the calculated spin-flip absorption rate is about twice the model prediction. These results show that although the Rashba model accurately describes the spectrum and spin polarization, it does not fully account for the dynamical properties of the surface states.

Relativistic effects and fully spin-polarized Fermi surface at the Tl/Si(111) surface

We present a detailed analysis of the relativistic electronic structure and the momentum dependent spin-polarization of the Tl/Si(111) surface. Our first principle calculations reveal the existence of fully spin-polarized electron pockets associated to the huge spin-splitting of metallic surface bands. The calculated spin-polarization shows a very complex structure in the reciprocal space, strongly departing from simple theoretical model approximations. Interestingly, the electronic spin-state close to the Fermi surface is polarized along the surface perpendicular direction and reverses its orientation between different electron pockets.

Self-consistent tight-binding description of Dirac points moving and merging in two dimensional optical lattices

We present an accurate ab initio tight-binding model, capable of describing the dynamics of Dirac points in tunable honeycomb optical lattices following a recent experimental realization [L. Tarruell et al., Nature 483, 302 (2012)]. Our scheme is based on first-principle maximally localized Wannier functions for composite bands. The tunneling coefficients are calculated for different lattice configurations, and the spectrum properties are well reproduced with high accuracy. In particular, we show which tight binding description is needed in order to accurately reproduce the position of Dirac points and the dispersion law close to their merging, for different laser intensities.

Tight binding models for ultracold atoms in honeycomb optical lattices

We discuss how to construct tight-binding models for ultra cold atoms in honeycomb potentials, by means of the maximally localized Wannier functions (MLWFs) for composite bands introduced by Marzari and Vanderbilt [1]. In particular, we work out the model with up to third-nearest neighbors, and provide explicit calculations of the MLWFs and of the tunneling coefficients for the graphene-lyke potential with two degenerate minima per unit cell. Finally, we discuss the degree of accuracy in reproducing the exact Bloch spectrum of different tight-binding approximations, in a range of typical experimental parameters.

Spin-flip transitions induced by time-dependent electric fields in surfaces with strong spin-orbit interaction

We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the light absorption rate at the Pb/Ge(111) surface with strong spin-orbit coupling. Our calculations show that electron spin-flip transitions cause as much as 6% of the total light absorption, representing one order of magnitude enhancement over Rashba-like systems. Thus, it is demonstrated that a substantial part of the light irradiating this nominally non-magnetic surface is attenuated in spin flip processes. Remarkably, the spin-flip transition probability is structured in well defined hot spots within the Brillouin zone where the electron spin experiences a sudden 90 degree rotation. This mechanism offers the possibility of an experimental approach to the spin-orbit phenomena by optical means.

Surface states on a topologically non-trivial semimetal: The case of Sb(110)

The electronic structure of Sb(110) is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principle calculations, revealing several electronic surface states in the projected bulk band gaps around the Fermi energy. The dispersion of the states can be interpreted in terms of a strong spin-orbit splitting. The bulk band structure of Sb has the characteristics of a strong topological insulator with a Z2 invariant nu0=1. This puts constraints on the existence of metallic surface states and the expected topology of the surface Fermi contour. However, bulk Sb is a semimetal, not an insulator and these constraints are therefore partly relaxed. This relation of bulk topology and expected surface state dispersion for semimetals is discussed.

Spin flip lifetimes in superconducting atom chips: BCS versus Eliashberg theory

We investigate theoretically the magnetic spin-flip transitions of neutral atoms trapped near a superconducting slab. Our calculations are based on a quantum-theoretical treatment of electromagnetic radiation near dielectric and metallic bodies. Specific results are given for rubidium atoms near a niobium superconductor. At the low frequencies typical of the atomic transitions, we find that BCS theory greatly overestimates coherence effects, which are much less pronounced when quasiparticle lifetime effects are included through Eliashberg theory. At 4.2 K, the typical atomic spin lifetime is found to be larger than a thousand seconds, even for atom-superconductor distances of one micrometer. This constitutes a large enhancement in comparison with normal metals.

Spin Decoherence in Superconducting Atom Chips

Using a consistent quantum-mechanical treatment for the electromagnetic radiation, we theoretically investigate the magnetic spin-flip scatterings of a neutral two-level atom trapped in the vicinity of a superconducting body. We derive a simple scaling law for the corresponding spin-flip lifetime for such an atom trapped near a superconducting thick slab. For temperatures below the superconducting transition temperature T_c, the lifetime is found to be enhanced by several orders of magnitude in comparison to the case of a normal conducting slab. At zero temperature the spin-flip lifetime is given by the unbounded free-space value.
