Reinforced Multi-task Approach for Multi-hop Question Generation

Question generation (QG) attempts to solve the inverse of question answering (QA) problem by generating a natural language question given a document and an answer. While sequence to sequence neural models surpass rule-based systems for QG, they are limited in their capacity to focus on more than one supporting fact. For QG, we often require multiple supporting facts to generate high-quality questions. Inspired by recent works on multi-hop reasoning in QA, we take up Multi-hop question generation, which aims at generating relevant questions based on supporting facts in the context. We employ multitask learning with the auxiliary task of answer-aware supporting fact prediction to guide the question generator. In addition, we also proposed a question-aware reward function in a Reinforcement Learning (RL) framework to maximize the utilization of the supporting facts. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through experiments on the multi-hop question answering dataset, HotPotQA. Empirical evaluation shows our model to outperform the single-hop neural question generation models on both automatic evaluation metrics such as BLEU, METEOR, and ROUGE, and human evaluation metrics for quality and coverage of the generated questions.

Hierarchical Deep Multi-modal Network for Medical Visual Question Answering

Visual Question Answering in Medical domain (VQA-Med) plays an important role in providing medical assistance to the end-users. These users are expected to raise either a straightforward question with a Yes/No answer or a challenging question that requires a detailed and descriptive answer. The existing techniques in VQA-Med fail to distinguish between the different question types sometimes complicates the simpler problems, or over-simplifies the complicated ones. It is certainly true that for different question types, several distinct systems can lead to confusion and discomfort for the end-users. To address this issue, we propose a hierarchical deep multi-modal network that analyzes and classifies end-user questions/queries and then incorporates a query-specific approach for answer prediction. We refer our proposed approach as Hierarchical Question Segregation based Visual Question Answering, in short HQS-VQA. Our contributions are three-fold, viz. firstly, we propose a question segregation (QS) technique for VQAMed; secondly, we integrate the QS model to the hierarchical deep multi-modal neural network to generate proper answers to the queries related to medical images; and thirdly, we study the impact of QS in Medical-VQA by comparing the performance of the proposed model with QS and a model without QS. We evaluate the performance of our proposed model on two benchmark datasets, viz. RAD and CLEF18. Experimental results show that our proposed HQS-VQA technique outperforms the baseline models with significant margins. We also conduct a detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of the obtained results and discover potential causes of errors and their solutions.

Assessing the Severity of Health States based on Social Media Posts

The unprecedented growth of Internet users has resulted in an abundance of unstructured information on social media including health forums, where patients request health-related information or opinions from other users. Previous studies have shown that online peer support has limited effectiveness without expert intervention. Therefore, a system capable of assessing the severity of health state from the patients' social media posts can help health professionals (HP) in prioritizing the user's post. In this study, we inspect the efficacy of different aspects of Natural Language Understanding (NLU) to identify the severity of the user's health state in relation to two perspectives(tasks) (a) Medical Condition (i.e., Recover, Exist, Deteriorate, Other) and (b) Medication (i.e., Effective, Ineffective, Serious Adverse Effect, Other) in online health communities. We propose a multiview learning framework that models both the textual content as well as contextual-information to assess the severity of the user's health state. Specifically, our model utilizes the NLU views such as sentiment, emotions, personality, and use of figurative language to extract the contextual information. The diverse NLU views demonstrate its effectiveness on both the tasks and as well as on the individual disease to assess a user's health.

Relation Extraction from Biomedical and Clinical Text: Unified Multitask Learning Framework

To minimize the accelerating amount of time invested in the biomedical literature search, numerous approaches for automated knowledge extraction have been proposed. Relation extraction is one such task where semantic relations between the entities are identified from the free text. In the biomedical domain, extraction of regulatory pathways, metabolic processes, adverse drug reaction or disease models necessitates knowledge from the individual relations, for example, physical or regulatory interactions between genes, proteins, drugs, chemical, disease or phenotype. In this paper, we study the relation extraction task from three major biomedical and clinical tasks, namely drug-drug interaction, protein-protein interaction, and medical concept relation extraction. Towards this, we model the relation extraction problem in multi-task learning (MTL) framework and introduce for the first time the concept of structured self-attentive network complemented with the adversarial learning approach for the prediction of relationships from the biomedical and clinical text. The fundamental notion of MTL is to simultaneously learn multiple problems together by utilizing the concepts of the shared representation. Additionally, we also generate the highly efficient single task model which exploits the shortest dependency path embedding learned over the attentive gated recurrent unit to compare our proposed MTL models. The framework we propose significantly improves overall the baselines (deep learning techniques) and single-task models for predicting the relationships, without compromising on the performance of all the tasks.

Tweet to News Conversion: An Investigation into Unsupervised Controllable Text Generation

Text generator systems have become extremely popular with the advent of recent deep learning models such as encoder-decoder. Controlling the information and style of the generated output without supervision is an important and challenging Natural Language Processing (NLP) task. In this paper, we define the task of constructing a coherent paragraph from a set of disaster domain tweets, without any parallel data. We tackle the problem by building two systems in pipeline. The first system focuses on unsupervised style transfer and converts the individual tweets into news sentences. The second system stitches together the outputs from the first system to form a coherent news paragraph. We also propose a novel training mechanism, by splitting the sentences into propositions and training the second system to merge the sentences. We create a validation and test set consisting of tweet-sets and their equivalent news paragraphs to perform empirical evaluation. In a completely unsupervised setting, our model was able to achieve a BLEU score of 19.32, while successfully transferring styles and joining tweets to form a meaningful news paragraph.

Investigating Deep Learning Approaches for Hate Speech Detection in Social Media

The phenomenal growth on the internet has helped in empowering individual's expressions, but the misuse of freedom of expression has also led to the increase of various cyber crimes and anti-social activities. Hate speech is one such issue that needs to be addressed very seriously as otherwise, this could pose threats to the integrity of the social fabrics. In this paper, we proposed deep learning approaches utilizing various embeddings for detecting various types of hate speeches in social media. Detecting hate speech from a large volume of text, especially tweets which contains limited contextual information also poses several practical challenges. Moreover, the varieties in user-generated data and the presence of various forms of hate speech makes it very challenging to identify the degree and intention of the message. Our experiments on three publicly available datasets of different domains shows a significant improvement in accuracy and F1-score.

A Deep Learning Approach for Automatic Detection of Fake News

Fake news detection is a very prominent and essential task in the field of journalism. This challenging problem is seen so far in the field of politics, but it could be even more challenging when it is to be determined in the multi-domain platform. In this paper, we propose two effective models based on deep learning for solving fake news detection problem in online news contents of multiple domains. We evaluate our techniques on the two recently released datasets, namely FakeNews AMT and Celebrity for fake news detection. The proposed systems yield encouraging performance, outperforming the current handcrafted feature engineering based state-of-the-art system with a significant margin of 3.08% and 9.3% by the two models, respectively. In order to exploit the datasets, available for the related tasks, we perform cross-domain analysis (i.e. model trained on FakeNews AMT and tested on Celebrity and vice versa) to explore the applicability of our systems across the domains.

Related Tasks can Share! A Multi-task Framework for Affective language

Expressing the polarity of sentiment as 'positive' and 'negative' usually have limited scope compared with the intensity/degree of polarity. These two tasks (i.e. sentiment classification and sentiment intensity prediction) are closely related and may offer assistance to each other during the learning process. In this paper, we propose to leverage the relatedness of multiple tasks in a multi-task learning framework. Our multi-task model is based on convolutional-Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) framework, which is further assisted by a diverse hand-crafted feature set. Evaluation and analysis suggest that joint-learning of the related tasks in a multi-task framework can outperform each of the individual tasks in the single-task frameworks.

A Deep Neural Framework for Contextual Affect Detection

A short and simple text carrying no emotion can represent some strong emotions when reading along with its context, i.e., the same sentence can express extreme anger as well as happiness depending on its context. In this paper, we propose a Contextual Affect Detection (CAD) framework which learns the inter-dependence of words in a sentence, and at the same time the inter-dependence of sentences in a dialogue. Our proposed CAD framework is based on a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), which is further assisted by contextual word embeddings and other diverse hand-crafted feature sets. Evaluation and analysis suggest that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by 5.49% and 9.14% on Friends and EmotionPush dataset, respectively.

Emotion helps Sentiment: A Multi-task Model for Sentiment and Emotion Analysis

In this paper, we propose a two-layered multi-task attention based neural network that performs sentiment analysis through emotion analysis. The proposed approach is based on Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory and uses Distributional Thesaurus as a source of external knowledge to improve the sentiment and emotion prediction. The proposed system has two levels of attention to hierarchically build a meaningful representation. We evaluate our system on the benchmark dataset of SemEval 2016 Task 6 and also compare it with the state-of-the-art systems on Stance Sentiment Emotion Corpus. Experimental results show that the proposed system improves the performance of sentiment analysis by 3.2 F-score points on SemEval 2016 Task 6 dataset. Our network also boosts the performance of emotion analysis by 5 F-score points on Stance Sentiment Emotion Corpus.

Sentiment-Aware Recommendation System for Healthcare using Social Media

Over the last decade, health communities (known as forums) have evolved into platforms where more and more users share their medical experiences, thereby seeking guidance and interacting with people of the community. The shared content, though informal and unstructured in nature, contains valuable medical and/or health-related information and can be leveraged to produce structured suggestions to the common people. In this paper, at first we propose a stacked deep learning model for sentiment analysis from the medical forum data. The stacked model comprises of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) followed by a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and then by another CNN. For a blog classified with positive sentiment, we retrieve the top-n similar posts. Thereafter, we develop a probabilistic model for suggesting the suitable treatments or procedures for a particular disease or health condition. We believe that integration of medical sentiment and suggestion would be beneficial to the users for finding the relevant contents regarding medications and medical conditions, without having to manually stroll through a large amount of unstructured contents.

Multi-task Learning for Multi-modal Emotion Recognition and Sentiment Analysis

Related tasks often have inter-dependence on each other and perform better when solved in a joint framework. In this paper, we present a deep multi-task learning framework that jointly performs sentiment and emotion analysis both. The multi-modal inputs (i.e., text, acoustic and visual frames) of a video convey diverse and distinctive information, and usually do not have equal contribution in the decision making. We propose a context-level inter-modal attention framework for simultaneously predicting the sentiment and expressed emotions of an utterance. We evaluate our proposed approach on CMU-MOSEI dataset for multi-modal sentiment and emotion analysis. Evaluation results suggest that multi-task learning framework offers improvement over the single-task framework. The proposed approach reports new state-of-the-art performance for both sentiment analysis and emotion analysis.

Relation extraction between the clinical entities based on the shortest dependency path based LSTM

Owing to the exponential rise in the electronic medical records, information extraction in this domain is becoming an important area of research in recent years. Relation extraction between the medical concepts such as medical problem, treatment, and test etc. is also one of the most important tasks in this area. In this paper, we present an efficient relation extraction system based on the shortest dependency path (SDP) generated from the dependency parsed tree of the sentence. Instead of relying on many handcrafted features and the whole sequence of tokens present in a sentence, our system relies only on the SDP between the target entities. For every pair of entities, the system takes only the words in the SDP, their dependency labels, Part-of-Speech information and the types of the entities as the input. We develop a dependency parser for extracting dependency information. We perform our experiments on the benchmark i2b2 dataset for clinical relation extraction challenge 2010. Experimental results show that our system outperforms the existing systems.

A Deep Ensemble Framework for Fake News Detection and Classification

Fake news, rumor, incorrect information, and misinformation detection are nowadays crucial issues as these might have serious consequences for our social fabrics. The rate of such information is increasing rapidly due to the availability of enormous web information sources including social media feeds, news blogs, online newspapers etc. In this paper, we develop various deep learning models for detecting fake news and classifying them into the pre-defined fine-grained categories. At first, we develop models based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Bi-directional Long Short Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) networks. The representations obtained from these two models are fed into a Multi-layer Perceptron Model (MLP) for the final classification. Our experiments on a benchmark dataset show promising results with an overall accuracy of 44.87\%, which outperforms the current state of the art.

Helping each Other: A Framework for Customer-to-Customer Suggestion Mining using a Semi-supervised Deep Neural Network

Suggestion mining is increasingly becoming an important task along with sentiment analysis. In today's cyberspace world, people not only express their sentiments and dispositions towards some entities or services, but they also spend considerable time sharing their experiences and advice to fellow customers and the product/service providers with two-fold agenda: helping fellow customers who are likely to share a similar experience, and motivating the producer to bring specific changes in their offerings which would be more appreciated by the customers. In our current work, we propose a hybrid deep learning model to identify whether a review text contains any suggestion. The model employs semi-supervised learning to leverage the useful information from the large amount of unlabeled data. We evaluate the performance of our proposed model on a benchmark customer review dataset, comprising of the reviews of Hotel and Electronics domains. Our proposed approach shows the F-scores of 65.6% and 65.5% for the Hotel and Electronics review datasets, respectively. These performances are significantly better compared to the existing state-of-the-art system.

Time-Aware and Corpus-Specific Entity Relatedness

Entity relatedness has emerged as an important feature in a plethora of applications such as information retrieval, entity recommendation and entity linking. Given an entity, for instance a person or an organization, entity relatedness measures can be exploited for generating a list of highly-related entities. However, the relation of an entity to some other entity depends on several factors, with time and context being two of the most important ones (where, in our case, context is determined by a particular corpus). For example, the entities related to the International Monetary Fund are different now compared to some years ago, while these entities also may highly differ in the context of a USA news portal compared to a Greek news portal. In this paper, we propose a simple but flexible model for entity relatedness which considers time and entity aware word embeddings by exploiting the underlying corpus. The proposed model does not require external knowledge and is language independent, which makes it widely useful in a variety of applications.

A Multi-task Ensemble Framework for Emotion, Sentiment and Intensity Prediction

In this paper, through multi-task ensemble framework we address three problems of emotion and sentiment analysis i.e. "emotion classification & intensity", "valence, arousal & dominance for emotion" and "valence & arousal} for sentiment". The underlying problems cover two granularities (i.e. coarse-grained and fine-grained) and a diverse range of domains (i.e. tweets, Facebook posts, news headlines, blogs, letters etc.). The ensemble model aims to leverage the learned representations of three deep learning models (i.e. CNN, LSTM and GRU) and a hand-crafted feature representation for the predictions. Experimental results on the benchmark datasets show the efficacy of our proposed multi-task ensemble frameworks. We obtain the performance improvement of 2-3 points on an average over single-task systems for most of the problems and domains.
