Spin-Polarized Photoelectrons in the Vicinity of Spectral Features

It has been shown by Fano (1969) https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRev.178.131 that photoionization of a cæsium atom by a laser pulse tuned to the vicinity of a Cooper minimum generates spin-polarized electrons. Here we show that while photoionization of rare gases does not provide large spin polarization in the vicinity of the Cooper minimum, the Fano resonances yield much higher overall spin polarization ($\ge40\%$). The spin polarization increases in angle-resolved photoelectron spectra, and reaches $100\%$ when measured in coincidence with the photoion. We provide a general framework for achieving spin polarization in photoionization irrespective of the ionization regime.

Generation of entanglement using a short-wavelength seeded free-electron laser

Quantum entanglement between the degrees of freedom encountered in the classical world is challenging to observe due to the surrounding environment. To elucidate this issue, we investigate the entanglement generated over ultrafast timescales in a bipartite quantum system comprising two massive particles: a free-moving photoelectron, which expands to a mesoscopic length-scale, and a light-dressed atomic ion, which represents a hybrid state of light and matter. Although the photoelectron spectra are measured classically, the entanglement allows us to reveal information about the dressed-state dynamics of the ion and the femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses delivered by a seeded free-electron laser. The observed generation of entanglement is interpreted using the time-dependent von Neumann entropy. Our results unveil the potential for using short-wavelength coherent light pulses from free-electron lasers to generate entangled photoelectron and ion systems for studying spooky action at a distance.

$\textit{Ab initio}$ electronic factors of the $A$ and $B$ hyperfine structure constants for the $5s^25p6s \; ^{1,3}\! P^{\rm o}_{1}$ states in Sn I

Large-scale $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of the electric field gradient, which constitutes the electronic contribution to the electric quadrupole hyperfine constant $B$, were performed for the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1,3}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ excited states of tin, using three independent computational strategies of the variational multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method and a fourth approach based on the configuration interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm theory. For the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state, the final value of $B/Q =703(50)$ MHz/b differs by $0.4\%$ from the one recently used by Yordanov ${\it et~al.}$ [Communications Physics ${\bf 3}$, 107 (2020)] to extract the nuclear quadrupole moments, $Q$, for tin isotopes in the range $^{(117-131)}$Sn from collinear laser spectroscopy measurements. Efforts were made to provide a realistic theoretical uncertainty for the final $B/Q$ value of the $5s^25p6s\,^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state based on statistical principles and on correlation with the magnetic dipole hyperfine constant $A$.
