Sivers Effect and Transverse Single Spin Asymmetry in $e+p^\uparrow \to e+J/ψ+X$

We discuss the possibility of using electroproduction of $J/ψ$ as a probe of gluon Sivers function by measuring single spin asymmetry (SSA) in experiments with transversely polarized protons and electron beams. We estimate SSA for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC energies using the color evaporation model of charmonium production and find asymmetry up to 25% for certain choices of model parameters which have been used earlier for estimating SSA in the SIDIS and Drell-Yan processes.

Generalized Parton Distributions of the Photon for Nonzero zeta

We present a calculation of the generalized parton distributions of the photon when there is non-zero momentum transfer both in the transverse and longitudinal directions. We consider only the contributions when the photon helicity is not flipped and calculate those at leading order in electromagnetic coupling $α$ and zeroth order in the strong coupling $α_s$. We keep the leading logarithmic terms as well as the quark mass terms in the vertex. By taking Fourier transforms of the GPDs with respect to the transverse and longitudinal momentum transfer, we obtain the parton distributions of the photon in position space.

A model independent analysis of gluonic pole matrix elements and universality of TMD fragmentation functions

Gluonic pole matrix elements explain the appearance of single spin asymmetries (SSA) in high-energy scattering processes. They involve a combination of operators which are odd under time reversal (T-odd). Such matrix elements appear in principle both for parton distribution functions and parton fragmentation functions. We show that for parton fragmentation functions these gluonic pole matrix elements vanish as a consequence of the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes in Quantum Chromodynamics. This result is important in the study of the universality of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions.

Twist Three Distribution e(x) : Sum Rules and Equation of Motion Relations

We investigate the twist three distribution function $e(x)$ in light-front Hamiltonian perturbation theory. In light-front gauge, by eliminating the constrained field, we find a mass term, an intrinsic transverse momentum dependent term and a 'genuine twist three' quark-gluon interaction term in the operator. The equation of motion relation, moment relation and the sum rules are satisfied for a quark at one loop. We compare the results with other model calculations.

Timelike Virtual Compton Scattering from Electron-Positron Radiative Annihilation

We propose measurements of the deeply virtual Compton amplitude (DVCS), gamma* to H H-bar gamma, in the timelike t = (p_{H} + p_{H-bar})^2 > 0 kinematic domain which is accessible at electron-positron colliders via the radiative annihilation process e+ e- to H H-bar gamma. These processes allow the measurement of timelike deeply virtual Compton scattering for a variety of H H-bar hadron pairs such as pi+ pi-, K+ K-, and D D-bar as well as p p-bar. As in the conventional spacelike DVCS, there are interfering coherent amplitudes contributing to the timelike processes involving C= - form factors. The interference between the amplitudes measures the phase of the C=+ timelike DVCS amplitude relative to the phase of the timelike form factors and can be isolated by considering the forward-backward e+ \leftrightarrow e- asymmetry. The J=0 fixed pole contribution which arises from the local coupling of the two photons to the quark current plays a special role. As an example we present a simple model.

Asymmetries involving dihadron fragmentation functions: from DIS to e+e- annihilation

Using a model calculation of dihadron fragmentation functions, we fit the spin asymmetry recently extracted by HERMES for the semi-inclusive pion pair production in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized proton target. By evolving the obtained dihadron fragmentation functions, we make predictions for the correlation of the angular distributions of two pion pairs produced in electron-positron annihilations at BELLE kinematics. Our study shows that the combination of two-hadron inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and electron-positron annihilation measurements can provide a valid alternative to Collins effect for the extraction of the quark transversity distribution in the nucleon.

Chiral Odd Generalized Parton Distributions in Impact Parameter Space

We investigate the chiral odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the quantum fluctuations of an electron in QED. The light-front wave function (LFWF) of this system gives a template for the quark spin-one diquark structure of the valence LFWF of the proton. We express the GPDs in terms of overlaps of LFWFs and obtain their representation in impact parameter space when the momentum transfer is purely transverse. We show the spin-orbit correlation effect of the two-particle LFWF as well as the correlation between the constituent spin and the transverse spin of the target.

Collins fragmentation function for pions and kaons in a spectator model

We calculate the Collins fragmentation function in the framework of a spectator model with pseudoscalar pion-quark coupling and a Gaussian form factor at the vertex. We determine the model parameters by fitting the unpolarized fragmentation function for pions and kaons. We show that the Collins function for the pions in this model is in reasonable agreement with recent parametrizations obtained by fits of the available data. In addition, we compute for the first time the Collins function for the kaons.

Diffraction Patterns in Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

We report on a calculation to show that the Fourier transform of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) amplitude with respect to the skewness variable ζat fixed invariant momentum transfer squared t gives results that are analogous to the diffractive scattering of a wave in optics. As a specific example, we utilize the quantum fluctuations of a fermion state at one loop in QED to obtain the behavior of the DVCS amplitude for electron-photon scattering. We then simulate the wavefunctions for a hadron by differentiating the above LFWFs with respect to M^2 and study the corresponding DVCS amplitudes in light-front longitudinal space.

Threshold Resummation for W-Boson Production at RHIC

We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for the process pp -> W^+- X at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). At RHIC, polarized protons are available, and spin asymmetries for this process will be used for precise measurements of the up and down quark and anti-quark distributions in the proton. The corrections arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction and are associated with soft-gluon emission. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, for the rapidity-differential cross section. We find that resummation leads to relatively moderate effects on the cross sections and spin asymmetries.

On the Size of Hadrons

The form factor and the mean-square radius of the pion are calculated analytically from a parametrized form of a $q\bar q$ wave function. The numerical wave function was obtained previously by solving numerically an eigenvalue equation for the pion in a particular model. The analytical formulas are of more general interest than just be valid for the pion and can be generalized to the case with unequal quark masses. Two different parametrizations are investigated. Because of the highly relativistic problem, noticable deviations from a non-relativistic formula are obtained.

Twist Four Longitudinal Structure Function for a Positronium-like Bound State in Light-Front QED

To have an analytic understanding of the higher-twist structure functions, we calculate twist four longitudinal structure function for a positronium-like bound state in weak coupling light-front QED. We find that in the weakly coupled system, the fermionic part of $F_L$ is related to the kinetic energy of the fermions and not to the interaction. We verify a previously proposed sum rule in this limit, which in this case reduces to a relation connecting the kinetic and the potential energies to the binding energy of positronium. Using the analytic form of the wave function of positronium in this limit, we show that the constituent counting rule does not hold for $x \to 1$. The twist four $F_L$ in this limit is similar in form to a widely used phenomenological ansatz.

Power Corrections in Deep Inelastic Scattering and Non-perturbative Light-front Dynamics

In this thesis, we have investigated the higher twist structure functions in the recently developed method based on light-front Hamiltonian QCD. Because of various special properties of light-front QCD, this is a more intuitive approach towards deep inelastic scattering but has a well defined field theoretic calculational procedure. Because our method is different from the conventional one, we have obtained various new results. Also, it is easier to explore many aspects which are difficult to understand in the conventional way. The structure functions, twist four $F_L$ and $g_T$ contain non-trivial interaction dependence in the operator structure and therefore involve quark-gluon dynamics. We have shown that the intergrals of these are directly related to the light-front Hamiltonian density and transverse spin operator respectively. These are non-perturbative relations. We have also renormalized the twist four longitudinal structure function and the full transverse spin operator respectively upto one loop in light-front Hamiltonian perturbation theory. We have investigated twist four $F_L$ for bound states like a meson in 1+1 dimensional QCD and for a positronium in 3+1 dimensional QED.

Quark Transversity Distribution in Perturbative QCD: Light-Front Hamiltonian Approach

To resolve the current ambiguity in the splitting function corresponding to the quark transversity distribution $h_1(x)$, we calculate $h_1(x)$ for a dressed quark in light-front Hamiltonian perturbation theory. Our result agrees with the expected form of the splitting function found in the literature and disagrees with the recent calculation in \cite{kuhn}. We emphasize the importance of quark mass in $h_1(x)$ in perturbative QCD and show its connection with a part of $g_T$.

Transverse Spin in QCD: Radiative Corrections

In this paper we address various issues connected with transverse spin in light front QCD. The transverse spin operators, in $A^+ = 0$ gauge, expressed in terms of the dynamical variables are explicitly interaction dependent unlike the helicity operator which is interaction independent in the topologically trivial sector of light-front QCD. Although it cannot be separated into an orbital and a spin part, we have shown that there exists an interesting decomposition of the transverse spin operator. We discuss the physical relevance of such a decomposition. We perform a one loop renormalization of the full transverse spin operator in light-front Hamiltonian perturbation theory for a dressed quark state. We explicitly show that all the terms dependent on the center of mass momenta get canceled in the matrix element. The entire non-vanishing contribution comes from the fermion intrinsic -like part of the transverse spin operator as a result of cancellation between the gluonic intrinsic-like and the orbital-like part of the transverse spin operator. We compare and contrast the calculations of transverse spin and helicity of a dressed quark in perturbation theory.

A Field Theoretic Investigation of Spin in QCD

Utilizing the kinematical boost in light-front formalism one can address the issue of relativistic spin operators in an arbitrary reference frame. In the gauge $A^+=0$, the interaction dependent transverse spin operators can be separated into three parts. In analogy with the helicity sum rule, we propose a transverse spin sum rule. We perform a one loop renormalization of the transverse spin operator and show that the counterterm needed is the same as the linear mass counterterm in the light-front QCD Hamiltonian.
