The case for an EIC Theory Alliance: Theoretical Challenges of the EIC

We outline the physics opportunities provided by the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). These include the study of the parton structure of the nucleon and nuclei, the onset of gluon saturation, the production of jets and heavy flavor, hadron spectroscopy and tests of fundamental symmetries. We review the present status and future challenges in EIC theory that have to be addressed in order to realize this ambitious and impactful physics program, including how to engage a diverse and inclusive workforce. In order to address these many-fold challenges, we propose a coordinated effort involving theory groups with differing expertise is needed. We discuss the scientific goals and scope of such an EIC Theory Alliance.

Forward doubly-virtual Compton scattering off an unpolarised deuteron in pionless effective field theory

We calculate the forward unpolarised doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the deuteron in the framework of pionless effective field theory, up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) for the longitudinal and next-to-leading order (NLO) for the transverse amplitude. The charge elastic form factor of the deuteron, obtained from the residue of the longitudinal VVCS amplitude, is used to extract the value of the single unknown two-nucleon one-photon contact coupling that enters the longitudinal amplitude at N3LO. We also study the lowest spin-independent generalised polarisabilities of the deuteron. The calculated unpolarised VVCS amplitude provides a high-precision model-independent input for a future calculation of the two-photon-exchange correction to the Lamb shift of muonic deuterium.

Deuteron VVCS and nuclear structure effects in muonic deuterium at N3LO in pionless EFT

We present our studies of the forward unpolarised doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the deuteron and the closely related two-photon-exchange ($2γ$-exchange) corrections to the Lamb shift of muonic deuterium. The deuteron VVCS amplitude is calculated in the framework of pionless effective field theory, up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) for the longitudinal and next-to-leading order (NLO) for the transverse amplitude. The charge elastic form factor of the deuteron, obtained from the residue of the longitudinal VVCS amplitude, is used to extract the value of the single unknown two-nucleon one-photon contact coupling that enters the longitudinal amplitude at N3LO. The obtained deuteron VVCS amplitude serves as a high-precision model-independent input to examine the $2γ$-exchange corrections. Substantial differences with the recent dispersive evaluations are identified, namely, the elastic contribution appears to be larger by several standard deviations, thus ameliorating the current discrepancy between theory and experiment on the size of $2γ$-exchange effects. A correlation between the values of the deuteron charge and Friar radii is found that can be used to judge on the quality of a parametrisation of the deuteron charge elastic form factor. The discrepancy between the theory and the empirical result for the $2γ$-exchange correction in muonic deuterium appears to be completely eliminated. To further confirm this, we revisit the hydrogen-deuterium isotope shift in the same framework. Our work provides an alternative self-consistent and high-precision evaluation of the $2γ$-exchange correction in (muonic) deuterium.

Comment on "Measurement of the $Q^2$ Dependence of the Deuteron Spin Structure Function $g_1$ and its Moments at Low $Q^2$ with CLAS"

We argue that the recently published CLAS results on the deuteron spin polarizability $γ_0$ [Adhikari {\it et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 120}, 062501 (2018)], as well as their comparisons with chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT), are misleading. In reality, the deuteron polarizability is larger by 4 orders of magnitude, as demonstrated here by a novel calculation in pionless EFT. The CLAS paper, on the other hand, presents only a tiny correction to it, based on a partial evaluation of a sum rule for $γ_0$. The sum rule is assumed to have the same form as for the nucleon; we argue it does not. Moreover, their "test of $χ$PT" tacitly involves assumptions which, as we demonstrate, may not be valid at the claimed accuracy.

Neutral pion photoproduction on protons in fully covariant ChPT with Delta(1232) loop contributions

We study the neutral pion photoproduction at near-threshold energies in fully covariant chiral perturbation theory up to O(p^3). When including only nucleonic virtual states in the model, the convergence is too slow. Therefore we test the model when introducing the Delta(1232) resonance as an additional degree of freedom. Some low-energy constants were fitted, converging to values in good agreement with those expected from literature.

Covariant ChPT calculation of the hyperon forward spin polarizability

We predict the values for baryon forward spin polarizabilities in fully covariant ChPT and including the virtual contributions of the spin-3/2 states. As the nucleon results are in good agreement with the experimental data and they do not depend on renormalization schemes, we extend the calculations to the hyperon sector.

Hyperon forward spin polarizability gamma0 in baryon chiral perturbation theory

We present the calculation of the hyperon forward spin polarizability gamma0 using manifestly Lorentz covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory including the intermediate contribution of the spin 3/2 states. As at the considered order the extraction of gamma0 is a pure prediction of chiral perturbation theory, the obtained values are a good test for this theory. After including explicitly the decuplet states, our SU(2) results have a very good agreement with the experimental data and we extend our framework to SU(3) to give predictions to the hyperons' gamma0 values. Prominent are the Sigma^- and Xi^- baryons as their photon transition to the decuplet is forbidden in SU(3) symmetry and therefore they are not sensitive to the explicit inclusion of the decuplet in the theory.

Threshold Neutral Pion Photoproduction on the Proton

The neutral pion photoproduction on the proton near threshold has a very small scattering cross section when compared to the charged channels, which in ChPT is explained by strong cancellations between the lowest order pieces. Therefore it is very sensitive to higher-order corrections of chiral perturbation theory. We perform a fully covariant calculation up to chiral order p^3 and we investigate the effect of the inclusion of the Delta(1232) resonance as an explicit degree of freedom. We show that the convergence improves, leading to a much better agreement with data at a wide range of energies.
