Novel approaches in Hadron Spectroscopy

The last two decades have witnessed the discovery of a myriad of new and unexpected hadrons. The future holds more surprises for us, thanks to new-generation experiments. Understanding the signals and determining the properties of the states requires a parallel theoretical effort. To make full use of available and forthcoming data, a careful amplitude modeling is required, together with a sound treatment of the statistical uncertainties, and a systematic survey of the model dependencies. We review the contributions made by the Joint Physics Analysis Center to the field of hadron spectroscopy.

Hadron Spectroscopy in Photoproduction

Recent decades have seen a resurge of interest in hadron spectroscopy, driven by new, high-luminosity experiments which have identified many new hadrons, both expected and unexpected. The large number of unexpected hadrons suggest contributions from additional quark and gluonic degrees of freedom to the hadronic spectrum beyond the basic quark model. Photoproduction has emerged as an attractive process to study hadron spectroscopy, due to the range of states accessible in new and planned experimental facilities, complimentary kinematics to other experiments where rescattering effects near thresholds are reduced, and advances in our theoretical understanding of these reactions. This white paper reviews the prospects for hadron spectroscopy from three major existing and proposed facilities: the current GlueX experiment, the planned Electron-Ion Collider, and a proposed JLab 24 GeV upgrade.

Snowmass white paper: Need for amplitude analysis in the discovery of new hadrons

We highlight the need for the development of comprehensive amplitude analysis methods to further our understanding of hadron spectroscopy. Reaction amplitudes constrained by first principles of $S$-matrix theory and by QCD phenomenology are needed to extract robust interpretations of the data from experiments and from lattice calculations.

A survey of machine learning-based physics event generation

Event generators in high-energy nuclear and particle physics play an important role in facilitating studies of particle reactions. We survey the state-of-the-art of machine learning (ML) efforts at building physics event generators. We review ML generative models used in ML-based event generators and their specific challenges, and discuss various approaches of incorporating physics into the ML model designs to overcome these challenges. Finally, we explore some open questions related to super-resolution, fidelity, and extrapolation for physics event generation based on ML technology.

Pion photoproduction off nucleons in covariant chiral perturbation theory

Pion photoproduction off the nucleon close to threshold is studied in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at O($p^3$) in the extended-on-mass-shell scheme, with the explicit inclusion of the $Δ(1232)$ resonance using the $δ$ counting. The theory is compared to the available data of cross sections and polarization observables for all the charge channels. Most of the necessary low energy constants are well known from the analysis of other processes and the comparison with data strongly constrains some of the still unknown ones. The $Δ(1232)$ contribution is significant in improving the agreement with data, even at the low energies considered.

Towards a combined analysis of inclusive/exclusive electroproduction

In view of the major advances achieved by the CLAS experiments in studying the N* electroexcitation amplitudes, as well as further extension of these studies in the experiments with CLAS12, we present an approach for the evaluation of the resonant contributions to inclusive electron scattering off protons. For the first time, the resonant contributions are determined from the experimental results on N* electrocouplings available from the data analyses of exclusive meson electroproduction off protons. This is a useful benchmark for future endeavours on understanding the transition region between low and high-energy regions, strongly related to tests on quark-hadron duality.

Double Polarization Observables in Pentaquark Photoproduction

We investigate the properties of the hidden charm pentaquark-like resonances first observed by LHCb in 2015, by measuring the polarization transfer KLL between the incident photon and the outgoing proton in the exclusive photoproduction of J/psi near threshold. We present a first estimate of the sensitivity of this observable to the pentaquark photocouplings and hadronic branching ratios, and extend our predictions to the case of initial state helicity correlation ALL, using a polarized target. These results serve as a benchmark for the SBS experiment at Jefferson Lab, which proposes to measure for the first time the helicity correlations ALL and KLL in J/psi exclusive photoproduction, in order to determine the pentaquark photocouplings and branching ratios.

Bounds on rare decays of $η$ and $η^\prime$ mesons from the neutron EDM

We provide model-independent bounds on the rates of rare decays $η(η^\prime) \to ππ$ based on experimental limits on the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM). Starting from phenomenological $η(η^\prime) ππ$ couplings, the nEDM arises at two loop level. The leading-order relativistic ChPT calculation with the minimal photon coupling to charged pions and a proton inside the loops leads to a finite, counter term-free result. This is an improvement upon previous estimates which used approximations in evaluating the two loop contribution and were plagued by divergences. While constraints on the $η(η^\prime) ππ$ couplings in our phenomenological approach are somewhat milder than in the picture with the QCD $θ$-term, our calculation means that whatever the origin of these couplings, The decays $η(η') \to 2 π$ will remain unobservable in the near future.

Weak pion production off the nucleon in covariant chiral perturbation theory

Weak pion production off the nucleon at low energies has been systematically investigated in manifestly relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit inclusion of the $Δ$(1232) resonance. Most of the involved low-energy constants have been previously determined in other processes such as pion-nucleon elastic scattering and electromagnetic pion production off the nucleon. For numerical estimates, the few remaining constants are set to be of natural size. As a result, the total cross sections for single pion production on neutrons and protons, induced either by neutrino or antineutrino, are predicted. Our results are consistent with the scarce existing experimental data except in the $ν_μn\to μ^-nπ^+$ channel, where higher-order contributions might still be significant. The $Δ$ resonance mechanisms lead to sizeable contributions in all channels, especially in $ν_μp\to μ^- pπ^+$, even though the considered energies are close to the production threshold. The present study provides a well founded low-energy benchmark for phenomenological models aimed at the description of weak pion production processes in the broad kinematic range of interest for current and future neutrino-oscillation experiments.

Electromagnetic form factors of spin 1/2 doubly charmed baryons

We study the electromagnetic form factors of the doubly charmed baryons, using covariant chiral perturbation theory within the extended on-mass-shell (EOMS) scheme. Vector-meson contributions are also taken into account. We present results for the baryon magnetic moments, charge and magnetic radii. While some of the chiral Lagrangian parameters could be set to values determined in previous works, the available lattice results for $Ξ_{cc}^+$ and $Ω_{cc}^+$ only allow for robust constraints on the low-energy constant (LEC) combination, $c_{89}(=-\frac{1}{3}c_8+4c_9)$. The couplings of the doubly charmed baryons to the vector mesons have been estimated assuming the Okubo--Zweig--Iizuka (OZI) rule. We also give the expressions for the form factors of the double beauty baryons considering the masses predicted in the framework of quark models. A comparison of our results with those obtained in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) at the same chiral order is made.

Exploring hyperon structure with electromagnetic transverse densities

We explore the structure of the spin-1/2 flavor-octet baryons (hyperons) through their electromagnetic transverse densities. The transverse densities describe the distribution of charge and magnetization at fixed light-front time and enable a spatial representation of the baryons as relativistic systems. At peripheral distances b~1/M_pi the transverse densities are computed using a new method that combines chiral effective field theory and dispersion analysis. The peripheral isovector densities arise from two-pion exchange, which includes the rho-meson resonance through elastic unitarity. The isoscalar densities are estimated from vector meson exchange (omega, phi). We find that the "pion cloud" in the charged Sigma hyperons is comparable to the nucleon, while in the Xi it is suppressed. The Lambda-Sigma^0 transition density is pure isovector and represents a clear manifestiation of peripheral two-pion dynamics.

Relating CP-violating decays to the neutron EDM

We use the present upper bound on the neutron electric dipole moment to give an estimate for the upper limit of the CP-violating couplings of the $η(η')$ meson to the neutron. Using this result, we derive constraints on the CP-violating two-pion decays of the $η(η')$. Our results are relevant for the running and planned GlueX and LHCb measurements of rare meson decays.

Studying the Pc(4450) resonance in J/psi photoproduction off protons

The LHCb has reported the observation of a resonancelike structure, the Pc(4450), in the J/psi p invariant masses. In our work, we discuss the feasibility of detecting this structure in J/psi photoproduction, e.g. in the measurements that have been approved for the experiments in Hall A/C and in Hall B with CLAS12 at JLab. Also the GlueX Collaboration has already reported preliminary results. We take into account the experimental resolution effects, and perform a global fit to world J/psi photoproduction data in order to study the possibility of observing the Pc(4450) signal in future JLab data. We present a first estimate of the upper limit for the branching ratio of the Pc(4450) into the J/psi p channel, and we study the angular distributions of the differential cross sections. This will shed light on the nature and couplings of the Pc(4450) structure in the future photoproduction experiments.

Systematic study of octet-baryon electromagnetic form factors in covariant chiral perturbation theory

We perform a complete and systematic calculation of the octet-baryon form factors within the fully covariant approach of SU(3) chiral perturbation theory at O(p^3). We use the extended on-mass shell renormalization scheme, and include explicitly the vector mesons and the spin-3/2 decuplet intermediate states. Comparing these predictions with data including magnetic moments, charges, and magnetic radii, we determine the unknown low-energy constants, and give predictions for yet unmeasured observables, such as the magnetic moment of the Sigma^0, and the charge and magnetic radii of the hyperons.

Transverse densities of octet baryons from chiral effective field theory

Transverse densities describe the distribution of charge and current at fixed light-front time and provide a frame-independent spatial representation of hadrons as relativistic systems. We calculate the transverse densities of the octet baryons at peripheral distances b = O(M_pi^{-1}) in an approach combining chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) and dispersion analysis. The densities are represented as dispersive integrals of the imaginary parts of the baryon electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region (spectral functions). The spectral functions on the two-pion cut at t > 4 M_pi^2 are computed using relativistic ChEFT with octet and decuplet baryons in the EOMS renormalization scheme. The calculations are extended into the rho-meson mass region, using a dispersive method that incorporates the timelike pion form-factor data. The approach allows us to construct densities at distances b > 1 fm with controlled uncertainties. Our results provide insight into the peripheral structure of nucleons and hyperons and can be compared with empirical densities and lattice-QCD calculations.

CP-violating decays of the pseudoscalars eta and eta' and their connection to the electric dipole moment of the neutron

Using the present upper bound on the neutron electric dipole moment, we give an estimate for the upper limit of the CP-violating couplings of the eta(eta') to the nucleon. Using this result, we then derive constraints on the CP-violating eta(eta')-pi-pi couplings, which define the two-pion CP-violating decays of the eta and eta' mesons. Our results are relevant for the running and planned measurements of rare decays of the eta and eta' mesons by the GlueX Collaboration at JLab and the LHCb Collaboration at CERN.

In-medium properties of the phi meson with phi N resonant contributions

Nuclear production experiments report missing absorption processes of the in-medium phi meson. Contributions arising from the K-bar K cloud have already been widely studied, and therefore we investigate the phi-meson properties in cold nuclear matter with the additional inclusion of resonant phi N interactions. Two models are considered which dynamically generate N*-like states close to the phi N threshold. We find that these states, together with the non-resonant part of the amplitude, contribute to the phi self-energy with the same order of magnitude as the K-bar K effects. At non-vanishing nuclear density, both models lead to an additional in-medium broadening of the phi, up to around 50 MeV. Furthermore, at least one of the models is compatible with a mass shift to lower energies of up to 35 MeV at threshold and normal matter density. Finally, a double-peak structure appears in the spectral function due to the mixing of resonance-hole modes with the $ϕ$ quasi-particle peak. These results converge into the direction of the experimental findings.
