Covariant representations of actions of inverse semigroups: a new approach to the reduced and essential crossed-product C*-algebras

We consider an action of an inverse semigroup on a C*-algebra $A$ and use it to construct a groupoid of germs with unit space the spectrum of $A$. Motivated by the representation theory of C*-algebras of groupoids, we construct a concrete family of covariant representations for the action. We use this family to give new definitions of the reduced and essential crossed product C*-algebras that avoid, respectively, passing to the double commutant and local multiplier algebra of $A$. Our reduced crossed product is isomorphic to the one defined by Exel, Buss and Meyer, and when the inverse semigroup is quasi-countable our essential crossed product is isomorphic to the one defined by Kwaśniewski and Meyer.

A dichotomy for inverse-semigroup crossed products via dynamical Cuntz semigroups

We characterise stable finiteness and pure infiniteness of the essential crossed product of a C*-algebra by an action of an inverse semigroup. Under additional assumptions, we prove a stably finite / purely infinite dichotomy. Our main technique is the development, using an induced action, of a ``dynamical Cuntz semigroup'' that is a subquotient of the usual Cuntz semigroup. We prove that the essential crossed product is stably finite / purely infinite if and only if the dynamical Cuntz semigroup admits / does not admit a nontrivial state. Indeed, a retract of our dynamical Cuntz semigroup suffices to prove the dichotomy. Our results generalise those by Rainone on crossed products of groups acting by automorphisms of a C*-algebra, and we recover results by Kwaśniewski--Meyer--Prasad on C*-algebras of non-Hausdorff groupoids.

Nuclear dimension of groupoid C*-algebras with large abelian isotropy, with applications to C*-algebras of directed graphs and twists

We characterise when the C*-algebra C*(G) of a locally compact and Hausdorff groupoid G is subhomogeneous, that is, when its irreducible representations have bounded finite dimension; if so we establish a bound for its nuclear dimension in terms of the topological dimensions of the unit space of the groupoid and the spectra of the primitive ideal spaces of the isotropy subgroups. For an etale groupoid G, we also establish a bound on the nuclear dimension of its C*-algebra provided the quotient of G by its isotropy subgroupid has finite dynamic asymptotic dimension in the sense of Guentner, Willet and Yu. Our results generalise those of C. Böncicke and K. Li to groupoids with large isotropy, including graph groupoids of directed graphs. We find that all graph C*-algebras that are stably finite have nuclear dimension at most 1. We also show that the nuclear dimension of the C*-algebra of a twist over G has the same bound on the nuclear dimension as for C*(G) and the twisted groupoid C*-algebra.

K-theory of C*-algebras arising from commuting Hilbert bimodules and invariant ideals

We study the K-theory of the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner C*-algebra of a rank-two product system that is an extension determined by an invariant ideal of the coefficient algebra. We use a construction of Deaconu and Fletcher that describes the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner C*-algebra of the product system in terms of two iterations of Pimsner's original construction of a C*-algebra from a right-Hilbert bimodule. We apply our results to the product system built from two commuting surjective local homeomorphisms of a totally disconnected space, where the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner C*-algebra is isomorphic to the C*-algebra of the associated rank-two Deaconu--Renault groupoid. We then apply a theorem of Spielberg about stable finiteness of an extension to obtain sufficient conditions for stable finiteness of the C*-algebra of the Deaconu-Renault groupoid.

Alexandrov groupoids and the nuclear dimension of twisted groupoid $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras

We consider a twist $E$ over an étale groupoid $G$. When $G$ is principal, we prove that the nuclear dimension of the reduced twisted groupoid $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is bounded by a number depending on the dynamic asymptotic dimension of $G$ and the topological covering dimension of its unit space. This generalizes an analogous theorem by Guentner, Willett, and Yu for the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra of $G$. Our proof uses a reduction to the unital case where $G$ has compact unit space, via a construction of ``groupoid unitizations'' $\widetilde{G}$ and $\widetilde{E}$ of $G$ and $E$ such that $\widetilde{E}$ is a twist over $\widetilde{G}$. The construction of $\widetilde G$ is for r-discrete (hence étale) groupoids $G$ which are not necessarily principal. When $G$ is étale, the dynamic asymptotic dimension of $G$ and $\widetilde{G}$ coincide. We show that the minimal unitizations of the full and reduced twisted groupoid $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras of the twist over $G$ are isomorphic to the twisted groupoid $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras of the twist over $\widetilde{G}$. We apply our result about the nuclear dimension of the twisted groupoid $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra to obtain a similar bound on the nuclear dimension of the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra of an étale groupoid with closed orbits and abelian stability subgroups that vary continuously.

Equivalence of definitions of AF groupoid

We prove the equivalence of two definitions of AF groupoid in the literature: one by Renault and the other by Farsi, Kumjian, Pask and Sims. In both definitions, an AF groupoid is an increasing union of more basic groupoids, called elementary groupoids. Surprisingly, the two definitions of elementary groupoid are not equivalent; they coincide if and only if the local homeomorphism that characterises them is a covering map.

Inclusions of C*-algebras of graded groupoids

We consider a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $G$ which is graded over a discrete group. Then the fibre over the identity is an open and closed subgroupoid $G_e$. We show that both the full and reduced C*-algebras of this subgroupoid embed isometrically into the full and reduced C*-algebras of $G$; this extends a theorem of Kaliszewski--Quigg--Raeburn from the étale to the non-étale setting. As an application we show that the full and reduced C*-algebras of $G$ are topologically graded in the sense of Exel, and we discuss the full and reduced C*-algebras of the associated bundles.

Stably finite extensions of rank-two graph C*-algebras

We study stable finiteness of extensions of 2-graph C*-algebras determined by saturated hereditary sets of vertices. We use two iterations of the Pimsner-Voiculescu sequence to calculate the map in K-theory induced by the inclusion of a hereditary subgraph into the larger 2-graph it lives in. We then apply a theorem of Spielberg about stable finiteness of extensions to provide a sufficient condition for the C*-algebra of the larger 2-graph to be stably finite. We illustrate our results with examples.

Boundary quotients of the right Toeplitz algebra of the affine semigroup over the natural numbers

We consider the semigroup crossed product of the additive natural numbers by the multiplicative natural numbers. We study its Toeplitz C*-algebra generated by the right-regular representation, which we call the right Toeplitz algebra. We analyse its structure by studying three distinguished quotients. We show that the multiplicative boundary quotient is isomorphic to a crossed product of the Toeplitz algebra of the additive rationals by an action of the multiplicative rationals, and study its ideal structure. We identify the Crisp-Laca boundary quotient as the C*-algebra of the corresponding group built from rational numbers. There is a natural dynamics on the right Toeplitz algebra and all its KMS states factor through the additive boundary quotient. We describe the KMS simplex for inverse temperatures greater than one.

Filtering germs: Groupoids associated to inverse semigroups

We investigate various groupoids associated to an arbitrary inverse semigroup with zero. We show that the groupoid of filters with respect to the natural partial order is isomorphic to the groupoid of germs arising from the standard action of the inverse semigroup on the space of idempotent filters. We also investigate the restriction of this isomorphism to the groupoid of tight filters and to the groupoid of ultrafilters.

Nuclearity of semigroup C*-algebras

We study the semigroup C*-algebra of a positive cone P of a weakly quasi-lattice ordered group. That is, P is a subsemigroup of a discrete group G with P\cap P^{-1}=\{e\} and such that any two elements of P with a common upper bound in P also have a least upper bound. We find sufficient conditions for the semigroup C*-algebra of P to be nuclear. These conditions involve the idea of a generalised length function, called a "controlled map", into an amenable group. Here we give a new definition of a controlled map and discuss examples from different sources. We apply our main result to establish nuclearity for semigroup C*-algebras of a class of one-relator semigroups, motivated by a recent work of Li, Omland and Spielberg. This includes all the Baumslag--Solitar semigroups. We also analyse semidirect products of weakly quasi-lattice ordered groups and use our theorem in examples to prove nuclearity of the semigroup C*-algebra. Moreover, we prove that the graph product of weak quasi-lattices is again a weak quasi-lattice, and show that the corresponding semigroup C*-algebra is nuclear when the underlying groups are amenable.

Dense subalgebras of purely infinite simple groupoid C*-algebras

A simple Steinberg algebra associated to an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ is algebraically purely infinite if and only if the characteristic functions of compact open subsets of the unit space are infinite idempotents. If a simple Steinberg algebra is algebraically purely infinite, then the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ is simple and purely infinite. But the Steinberg algebra seems to small for the converse to hold. For this purpose we introduce an intermediate $*$-algebra $B(G)$ constructed using corners $1_U C^*_r(G) 1_U$ for all compact open subsets $U$ of the unit space of the groupoid. We then show that if $G$ is minimal and effective, then $B(G)$ is algebraically properly infinite if and only if $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple. We apply our results to the algebras of higher-rank graphs.

All classifiable Kirchberg algebras are $C^{\ast}$-algebras of ample groupoids

In this note we show that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class is the $C^{\ast}$-algebra of a Hausdorff, ample, amenable and locally contracting groupoid. The non-unital case follows from Spielberg's graph-based models for Kirchberg algebras. Our contribution is the unital case and our proof builds on Spielberg's construction.

Equilibrium states on higher-rank Toeplitz noncommutative solenoids

We consider a family of higher-dimensional noncommutative tori, which are twisted analogues of the algebras of continuous functions on ordinary tori, and their Toeplitz extensions. Just as solenoids are inverse limits of tori, our Toeplitz noncommutative solenoids are direct limits of the Toeplitz extensions of noncommutative tori. We consider natural dynamics on these Toeplitz algebras, and compute the equilibrium states for these dynamics. We find a large simplex of equilibrium states at each positive inverse temperature, parametrised by the probability measures on an (ordinary) solenoid.

KMS states on $C^*$-algebras associated to a family of $*$-commuting local homeomorphisms

We consider a family of $*$-commuting local homeomorphisms on a compact space, and build a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules (in the sense of Fowler). This product system has a Nica-Toeplitz algebra and a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. Both algebras carry a gauge action of a higher-dimensional torus, and there are many possible dynamics obtained by composing with different embeddings of the real line in this torus. We study the KMS states of these dynamics. For large inverse temperatures, we describe the simplex of KMS states on the Nica-Toeplitz algebra. To study KMS states for smaller inverse temperature, we consider a preferred dynamics for which there is a single critical inverse temperature. We find a KMS state on the Nica-Toeplitz algebra at this critical inverse temperature which factors through the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We then illustrate our results by considering backward shifts on the infinite-path spaces of a class of $k$-graphs.

A program for finding all KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra of a higher-rank graph

The Toeplitz algebra of a finite graph of rank $k$ carries a natural action of the torus ${\mathbb T}^k$, and composing with an embedding of ${\mathbb R}$ in ${\mathbb T}^k$ gives a dynamics on the Toeplitz algebra. For inverse temperatures larger than a critical value, the KMS states for this dynamics are well-understood, and this analysis is the first step in our program. At the critical inverse temperature, much less is known, and the second step in our program is an analysis of the KMS states at the critical value. This is the main technical contribution of the present paper. The third step shows that the problem of finding the states at inverse temperatures less than the critical value is equivalent to our original problem for a smaller graph. Then we can tackle this new problem using the same three steps, and repeat if necessary. So in principle, modulo some mild connectivity conditions on the graph, our results give a complete description of the simplex of KMS states at all inverse temperatures. We test our program on a wide range of examples, including a very general family of graphs with three strongly connected components.

HNN extensions of quasi-lattice ordered groups and their operator algebras

The Baumslag-Solitar group is an example of an HNN extension. Spielberg showed that it has a natural positive cone, and that it is then a quasi-lattice ordered group in the sense of Nica. We give conditions for an HNN extension of a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G,P)$ to be quasi-lattice ordered. In that case, if $(G,P)$ is amenable as a quasi-lattice ordered group, then so is the HNN extension.
