We decompose the full and reduced C*-algebras of an extension of a groupoid by the circle into a direct sum of twisted groupoid C*-algebras.
Let E be a second-countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid equipped with an action of T such that G:=E/T is a principal groupoid with Haar system λ. The twisted groupoid C*-algebra C*(E;G,λ) is a quotient of the C*-algebra of E obtained by completing the space of T-equivariant functions on E. We show that C*(E;G,λ) is postliminal if and only if the orbit space of G is T_0 and that C*(E;G, λ) is liminal if and only if the orbit space is T_1. We also show that C*(E;G, λ) has bounded trace if and only if G is integrable and that C*(E;G, λ) is a Fell algebra if and only if G is Cartan. Let \G be a second-countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid with Haar system λand continuously varying, abelian isotropy groups. Let A be the isotropy groupoid and R := \G/A. Using the results about twisted groupoid C*-algebras, we show that the C*-algebra C*(\G, λ) has bounded trace if and only if R is integrable and that C*(\G, λ) is a Fell algebra if and only if R is Cartan. We illustrate our theorems with examples of groupoids associated to directed graphs.
The Kumjian-Pask algebra KP(Λ) is a graded algebra associated to a higher-rank graph Λand is a generalization of the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph. We analyze the minimal left-ideals of KP(Λ), and identify its socle as a graded ideal by describing its generators in terms of a subset of vertices of the graph. We characterize when KP(Λ) is semisimple, and obtain a complete structure theorem for a semisimple Kumjian-Pask algebra.
Let (G, X) be a transformation group where the group $G$ does not necessarily act freely on the space X. We investigate the extent to which the action of G may fail to be proper. Stability subgroups are used to define new notions of strength of convergence in the orbit space and of measure accumulation along orbits. By using the representation theory of the associated crossed product C^*-algebra, we show that these notions are equivalent under certain conditions.
We generalise the Dixmier-Douady classification of continuous-trace C*-algebras to Fell algebras. To do so, we show that C*-diagonals in Fell algebras are precisely abelian subalgebras with the extension property, and use this to prove that every Fell algebra is Morita equivalent to one containing a diagonal subalgebra. We then use the machinery of twisted groupoid C*-algebras and equivariant sheaf cohomology to define the Dixmier-Douady invariant of a Fell algebra A, and to prove our classification theorem.
There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product, though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra. We apply this result to a variety of Exel systems, including those associated to shifts on the path spaces of directed graphs.
There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product (though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra), that every Stacey crossed product is an Exel crossed product, and answer some questions raised by Ionescu and Muhly. While this manuscript is not yet in its final form(s) several people have already used our results, so we are posting it now.
We introduce higher-rank analogues of the Leavitt path algebras, which we call the Kumjian-Pask algebras. We prove graded and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for these algebras, and analyze their ideal structure.
The first imprimitivity theorems identified the representations of groups or dynamical systems which are induced from representations of a subgroup. Symmetric imprimitivity theorems identify pairs of crossed products by different groups which are Morita equivalent, and hence have the same representation theory. Here we consider commuting actions of groups $H$ and $K$ on a $C^*$-algebra which are saturated and proper as defined by Rieffel in 1990. Our main result says that the resulting Morita equivalence of crossed products is natural in the sense that it is compatible with homomorphisms and induction processes.
We study the Toeplitz algebra $\TT(\N\rtimes\N^\times)$ and three quotients of this algebra: the $C^*$-algebra $\qn$ recntly introduced by Cuntz, and two new ones, which we call the additive and multiplicative boundary quotients. These quotients are universal for Nica-covariant representations of $\N\rtimes\N^\times$ satisfying extra relations, and can be realised as partial crossed products. We use the structure theory for partial crossed products to prove a uniqueness theorem for the additive boundary quotient, and use the recent analysis of KMS states on $\TT(\nxnx)$ to describe the KMS states on the two quotients. We then show that $\TT(\nxnx)$, $\qn$ and our new quotients are all interesting new examples for Larsen's theory of Exel crossed products by semigroups.
Let G be a second-countable locally-compact Hausdorff groupoid with a Haar system, and let {x_n} be a sequence in the unit space of G. We show that the notions of strength of convergence of {x_n} in the orbit space and measure-theoretic accumulation along the orbits are equivalent ways of realising multiplicity numbers associated to a sequence of induced representation of the groupoid C*-algebra.
Given an n x n integer matrix A whose eigenvalues are strictly greater than 1 in absolute value, let σ_A be the transformation of the n-torus T^n=R^n/Z^n defined by σ_A(e^{2πix})=e^{2πiAx} for x\in R^n. We study the associated crossed-product C*-algebra, which is defined using a certain transfer operator for σ_A, proving it to be simple and purely infinite and computing its K-theory groups.
We survey the results required to pass between full and reduced coactions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras, which say, roughly speaking, that one can always do so without changing the crossed-product C*-algebra. Wherever possible we use definitions and constructions that are well-documented and accessible to non-experts, and otherwise we provide full details. We then give a series of applications to illustrate the use of these techniques. We obtain in particular a new version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for full coactions, and prove that it gives a natural isomorphism between crossed-product functors defined on appropriate categories.
We consider two categories of C*-algebras; in the first, the isomorphisms are ordinary isomorphisms, and in the second, the isomorphisms are Morita equivalences. We show how these two categories, and categories of dynamical systems based on them, crop up in a variety of C*-algebraic contexts. We show that Rieffel's construction of a fixed-point algebra for a proper action can be made into functors defined on these categories, and that his Morita equivalence then gives a natural isomorphism between these functors and crossed-product functors. These results have interesting applications to non-abelian duality for crossed products.
We consider a fixed free and proper action of a locally compact group $G$ on a space $T$, and actions $α:G\to \Aut A$ on $C^*$-algebras for which there is an equivariant embedding of $(C_0(T),\rt)$ in $(M(A),α)$. A recent theorem of Rieffel implies that $α$ is proper and saturated with respect to the subalgebra $C_0(T)AC_0(T)$ of $A$, so that his general theory of proper actions gives a Morita equivalence between $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ and a generalised fixed-point algebra $A^α$. Here we investigate the functor $(A,α)\mapsto A^α$ and the naturality of Rieffel's Morita equivalence, focusing in particular on the relationship between the different functors associated to subgroups and quotients. We then use the results to study induced representations for crossed products by coactions of homogeneous spaces $G/H$ of $G$, which were previously shown by an Huef and Raeburn to be fixed-point algebras for the dual action of $H$ on the crossed product by $G$.
Suppose that a locally compact group $G$ acts freely and properly on the right of a locally compact space $T$. Rieffel proved that if $α$ is an action of $G$ on a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and there is an equivariant embedding of $C_0(T)$ in $M(A)$, then the action $α$ of $G$ on $A$ is proper, and the crossed product $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ is Morita equivalent to a generalised fixed-point algebra $\Fix(A,α)$ in $M(A)^α$. We show that the assignment $(A,α)\mapsto\Fix(A,α)$ extends to a functor $\Fix$ on a category of $C^*$-dynamical systems in which the isomorphisms are Morita equivalences, and that Rieffel's Morita equivalence implements a natural isomorphism between a crossed-product functor and $\Fix$. From this, we deduce naturality of Mansfield imprimitivity for crossed products by coactions, improving results of Echterhoff-Kaliszewski-Quigg-Raeburn and Kaliszewski-Quigg Raeburn, and naturality of a Morita equivalence for graph algebras due to Kumjian and Pask.
We consider separable $C^*$-dynamical systems $(A,G,α)$ for which the induced action of the group $G$ on the spectrum $\hat A$ of the $C^*$-algebra $A$ is free. We study how the representation theory of the associated crossed-product $C^*$-algebra $A\rtimes_αG$ depends on the representation theory of $A$ and the properties of the action of $G$ on $\hat A$. Our main tools involve computations of upper and lower bounds on multiplicity numbers associated to irreducible representations of $A\rtimes_αG$. We apply our techniques to give necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of $A$ and the action of $G$ on $\hat A$, for $A\rtimes_αG$ to be (i) a continuous-trace $C^*$-algebra, (ii) a Fell $C^*$-algebra and (iii) a bounded-trace $C^*$-algebra. When $G$ is amenable, we also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the crossed-product $C^*$-algebra $A\rtimes_αG$ to be (iv) a liminal $C^*$-algebra and (v) a Type I $C^*$-algebra. The results in (i), (iii)--(v) extend some earlier special cases in which $A$ was assumed to have the corresponding property.
Let B be a C*-algebra with a maximal coaction of a locally compact group G, and let N and H be closed normal subgroups of G with N contained in H. We show that the process Ind_(G/H)^G which uses Mansfield's bimodule to induce representations of the crossed product of B by G from those of the restricted crossed product of B by (G/H) is equivalent to the two-stage induction process: Ind_(G/N)^G composed with Ind_(G/H)^(G/N). The proof involves a calculus of symmetric imprimitivity bimodules which relates the bimodule tensor product to the fibred product of the underlying spaces.
