Asymptotics of the quantization problem on metric measure spaces

The problem of quantization of measures looks for best approximations of probability measures on a metric space by discrete measures supported on $N$ points, where the error of approximation is measured with respect to the Wasserstein distance. Zador's theorem states that, for measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ or $d$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds satisfying appropriate integrability conditions, the quantization error decays to zero as $N \to \infty$ at the rate $N^{-1/d}$. In this paper, we provide a general treatment of the asymptotics of quantization on metric measure spaces $(X, ν)$. We show that a weaker version of Zador's theorem involving the Hausdorff densities of $ν$ holds also in this general setting. We also prove Zador's theorem in full for appropriate $m$-rectifiable measures on Euclidean space, answering a conjecture by Graf and Luschgy in the affirmative. For both results, the higher integrability conditions of Zador's theorem are replaced with a general notion of $(p,s)$-quantizability, which follows from Pierce-type (non-asymptotic) upper bounds on the quantization error, and we also prove multiple such bounds at the level of metric measure spaces.

Asymptotic quantization on Riemannian manifolds via covering growth estimates

The quantization problem looks for best approximations of a probability measure on a given metric space by finitely many points, where the approximation error is measured with respect to the Wasserstein distance. On particular smooth domains, such as $\mathbb{R}^d$ or complete Riemannian manifolds, the quantization error is known to decay polynomially as the number of points is taken to infinity, provided the measure satisfies an integral condition which controls the amount of mass outside compact sets. On Riemannian manifolds, the existing integral condition involves a quantity measuring the growth of the exponential map, for which the only available estimates are in terms of lower bounds on sectional curvature. In this paper, we provide a more general integral condition for the asymptotics of the quantization error on Riemannian manifolds, given in terms of the growth of the covering numbers of spheres, which is purely metric in nature and concerns only the large-scale growth of the manifold. We further estimate the covering growth of manifolds in two particular cases, namely lower bounds on the Ricci curvature and geometric group actions by a discrete group of isometries. These estimates can themselves generalize beyond manifolds, and hint at a future treatment of asymptotic quantization also on non-smooth metric measure spaces.

Probability error bounds for approximation of functions in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

We find probability error bounds for approximations of functions $f$ in a separable reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ with reproducing kernel $K$ on a base space $X$, firstly in terms of finite linear combinations of functions of type $K_{x_i}$ and then in terms of the projection $π^n_x$ on $\mathrm{Span}\{K_{x_i}\}^n_{i=1}$, for random sequences of points $x=(x_i)_i$ in $X$. Given a probability measure $P$, letting $P_K$ be the measure defined by $\mathrm{d} P_K(x)=K(x,x)\mathrm{d} P(x)$, $x\in X$, our approach is based on the nonexpansive operator \[L^2(X;P_K)\niλ\mapsto L_{P,K}λ:=\int_X λ(x)K_x\mathrm{d} P(x)\in \mathcal{H},\] where the integral exists in the Bochner sense. Using this operator, we then define a new reproducing kernel Hilbert space, denoted by $\mathcal{H}_P$, that is the operator range of $L_{P,K}$. Our main result establishes bounds, in terms of the operator $L_{P,K}$, on the probability that the Hilbert space distance between an arbitrary function $f\in\mathcal{H}$ and linear combinations of functions of type $K_{x_i}$, for $(x_i)_i$ sampled independently from $P$, falls below a given threshold. For sequences of points $(x_i)_{i=1}^\infty$ constituting a so-called uniqueness set, the orthogonal projections $π^n_x$ to $\mathrm{Span}\{K_{x_i}\}^n_{i=1}$ converge in the strong operator topology to the identity operator. We prove that, under the assumption that $\mathcal{H}_P$ is dense in $\mathcal{H}$, any sequence of iid samples from $P$ yields a uniqueness set with probability $1$. This result improves on previous error bounds in weaker norms, such as uniform or $L^p$ norms, which yield only convergence in probability and not a.c. convergence. Two examples that show the applicability of this result to a uniform distribution on a compact interval and to the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$ are presented as well.

A Proposed Framework for Interactive Virtual Reality In Situ Visualization of Parallel Numerical Simulations

As computer simulations progress to increasingly complex, non-linear, and three-dimensional systems and phenomena, intuitive and immediate visualization of their results is becoming crucial. While Virtual Reality (VR) and Natural User Interfaces (NUIs) have been shown to improve understanding of complex 3D data, their application to live in situ visualization and computational steering is hampered by performance requirements. Here, we present the design of a software framework for interactive VR in situ visualization of parallel numerical simulations, as well as a working prototype implementation. Our design is targeted towards meeting the performance requirements for VR, and our work is packaged in a framework that allows for easy instrumentation of simulations. Our preliminary results inform about the technical feasibility of the architecture, as well as the challenges that remain.
