Improved local well-posedness for the periodic "good" Boussinesq equation

We prove that the "good" Boussinesq model with the periodic boundary condition is locally well-posed in the space $H^{s}\times H^{s-2}$ for $s > -3/8$. In the proof, we employ the normal form approach, which allows us to explicitly extract the rougher part of the solution. This also leads to the conclusion that the remainder is in a smoother space $C([0,T], H^{s+a}), where $0 <= a < \min (2s+1, 1/2)$. If we have a mean-zero initial data, this implies a smoothing effect of this order for the non-linearity. This is new even in the previously considered cases $s > -1/4$.

Linear stability analysis for traveling waves of second order in time PDE's

We develop a general theory for linear stability of traveling waves of second order in time PDE's. More precisely, we introduce an explicitly computable index $\om^*\in (0, \infty]$ (depending on the self-adjoint part of the linearized operator) so that the wave is stable if and only if $|c|\geq \om^*$. The results are applicable both in the periodic case and in the whole line case. As an application, we consider three classical models - the Boussinesq equation, the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov (KGZ) system and the fourth order beam equation. For the Boussinesq model and the KGZ system (and as a direct application of the main results), we compute explicitly the set of speeds which give rise to linearly stable traveling waves (and for all powers of $p$ in the case of Boussinesq). This result is new for the KGZ system, while it generalizes the results of Alexander-Sachs, which apply to the case $p=2$. For the beam equation, we provide an explicit formula (depending of the function $\|\vp_c'\|_{L^2}$), which works for all $p$ and for both the periodic and the whole line cases. Our results complement (and exactly match, whenever they exist) the results of a long line of investigation regarding the related notion of orbital stability of the same waves.

Local well-posedness for quadratic Schrödinger equations in $\mathbf{R^{1+1}}$: a normal form approach

For the Schrödinger equation $u_t+i u_{xx}=\nab^\be[u^2]$, $\be\in (0,1/2)$, we establish local well-posedness in $H^{\be-1+}$ (note that if $\be=0$, this matches, up to an endpoint, the sharp result of Bejenaru-Tao, \cite{BT}). Our approach differs significantly from the previous ones in that we use normal form transformation to analyze the worst interacting terms in the nonlinearity and then show that the remaining terms are (much) smoother. In particular, this allows us to conclude that $u-e^{-i t \p_x^2} u(0)\in H^{-\f{1}{2}}(\rone)$, even though $u(0)\in H^{\be-1+}$. In addition and as a byproduct of our normal form analysis, we obtain a Lipschitz continuity property in $H^{-\f{1}{2}}$ of the solution operator (which originally acts on $H^{\be-1+}$), which is new even in the case $\be=0$. As an easy corollary, we obtain local well-posedness results for $u_t+ i u_{xx} = [\nab^β u]^2$. Finally, we sketch an approach to obtain similar statements for the equations $u_t+i u_{xx}=\nab^\be[u\bar{u}]$ and $u_t+i u_{xx}=\nab^\be[\bar{u}^2]$.

Transverse instability for periodic waves of KP-I and Schrödinger equations

We consider the quadratic and cubic KP - I and NLS models in $1+2$ dimensions with periodic boundary conditions. We show that the spatially periodic travelling waves (with period $K$) in the form $u(t,x,y)=\vp(x-c t)$ are spectrally and linearly unstable, when the perturbations are taken to be with the same period. This strong instability implies other instabilities considered recently - for example with respect to perturbations with periods $nK, n=2, 3, ...$ or bounded perturbations.

The Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in R^1 and R^2: effective estimates of the high-frequency tails and higher Sobolev norms

We consider the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KS) equation in finite domains of the form $[-L,L]^d$. Our main result provides refined Gevrey estimates for the solutions of the one dimensional differentiated KS, which in turn imply effective new estimates for higher Sobolev norms of the solutions in terms of powers of $L$. We illustrate our method on a simpler model, namely the regularized Burger's equation. We also show local well-posedness for the two dimensional KS equation and provide an explicit criteria for (eventual) blow-up in terms of its $L^2$ norm. The common underlying idea in both results is that {\it a priori} control of the $L^2$ norm is enough in order to conclude higher order regularity and allows one to get good estimates on the high-frequency tails of the solutions.

Pseudodifferential operators with rough symbols

In this work, we develop $L^p$ boundedness theory for pseudodifferential operators with rough (not even continuous in general) symbols in the $x$ variable. Moreover, the $B(L^p)$ operator norms are estimated explicitly in terms of scale invariant quantities involving the symbols. All the estimates are shown to be sharp with respect to the required smoothness in the $ξ$ variable. As a corollary, we obtain $L^p$ bounds for (smoothed out versions of) the maximal directional Hilbert transform and the Carleson operator.

Attractors for the viscous Camassa-Holm equation

We show that the viscous Camassa-Holm equation subject to an external force, and where the viscosity term is given by second order differential operator in divergence form has a global attractors in the energy space $H^1$. Moreover, we establish an asymptotic smoothing effect.

Smoothing - Strichartz Estimates for the Schrodinger Equation with small Magnetic Potential

The work treats smoothing and dispersive properties of solutions to the Schrodinger equation with magnetic potential. Under suitable smallness assumption on the potential involving scale invariant norms we prove smoothing - Strichartz estimate for the corresponding Cauchy problem. An application that guarantees absence of pure point spectrum of the corresponding perturbed Laplace operator is discussed too.

Strichartz estimates for the magnetic Schrödinger equation

We prove global, scale invariant Strichartz estimates for the linear magnetic Schrödinger equation with small time dependent magnetic field. This is done by constructing an appropriate parametrix. As an application, we show a global regularity type result for Schrödinger maps in dimensions $n\geq 6$.

On the well-posedness of the wave map problem in high dimensions

We construct a gauge theoretic change of variables for the wave map from $R \times R^n$ into a compact group or Riemannian symmetric space, prove a new multiplication theorem for mixed Lebesgue-Besov spaces, and show the global well-posedness of a modified wave map equation - $n \ge 4$ - for small critical initial data. We obtain global existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem of wave maps into {\it compact} Lie groups and symmetric spaces with small critical initial data and $n \ge 4$.

On Schrödinger maps

We study the question of well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for Schrödinger maps from $\rone \times \rtwo$ to the sphere $\stwo$ or to ${\mathbb H^2}$, the hyperbolic space. The idea is to choose an appropriate gauge change so that the derivatives of the map will satisfy a certain nonlinear Schrödinger system of equations and then study this modified Schrödinger map system (MSM). We then prove local well posedness of the Cauchy problem for the MSM with minimal regularity assumptions on the data and outline a method to derive well posedness of the Schrödinger map itself from it. In proving well posedness of the MSM, the heart of the matter is resolved by considering truly quatrilinear forms of weighted $L^2$ functions.

Optimal solvability for the Dirichlet and Neumann problem in dimension two

We show existence and uniqueness for the solutions of the regularity and the Neumann problems for harmonic functions on Lipschitz domains with data in the Hardy spaces H^p, p>2/3, where This in turn implies that solutions to the Dirichlet problem with data in the Holder class C^{1/2}(\partial D) are themselves in C^{1/2}(D). Both of these results are sharp. In fact, we prove a more general statement regarding the H^p solvability for divergence form elliptic equations with bounded measurable coefficients. We also prove similar solvability result for the regularity and Dirichlet problem for the biharmonic equation on Lipschitz domains.

$L^p$ bounds for singular integrals and maximal singular integrals with rough kernels

Convolution type Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operators with rough kernels $\pv \Om(x)/|x|^n$ are studied. A condition on $\Om$ implying that the corresponding singular integrals and maximal singular integrals map $L^p \to L^p$ for $1<p<\nf$ is obtained. This condition is shown to be different from the condition $\Om\in H^1(\sn)$.
