Evolution of Critical Current Density in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ with La-doping

Single crystals of (Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$)KFe$_4$As$_4$ (0 <= x <=0.16) have been grown by using the self-flux method, and the evolution of physical properties including the critical current density (Jc) with La-doping has been investigated. Tc decreases monotonically with increasing x, while Jc at the same temperature and magnetic field increases initially and reach its maximum at x = 0.082. The increase in Jc is more obvious at low temperatures and high fields. At T = 5 K and H = 40 kOe, Jc reaches 0.34 MA/cm$^2$, which is ~4 times larger than that for pure crystals. It is also found that anomalous temperature dependence of Jc in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is wiped away as the La content is increased. However, Jc shows non-monotonic field dependence (peak effect) at high fields in crystals with large x. In addition, we found that despite weak anisotropy of H$_{c2}$, there is extremely large anisotropy of Jc up to ~15, which is most likely caused by novel planar defects in the crystal, similar to CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. Jc characteristics in (Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$)KFe$_4$As$_4$ with disorder outside FeAs planes is compared with that in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ with disorder within FeAs planes.

Crossover between Anomalous Peak Effects Induced by Splayed and Tilted Columnar Defects in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We investigated the magnetic field dependence of the critical current density (Jc) in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 with various configurations of columnar defects (CDs) introduced by 2.6 GeV U or 320 MeV Au irradiations. Splayed CDs are introduced by crossing CDs at a specific angle with respect to the c-axis, while tilted CDs are introduced by irradiating the sample from the direction tilted from the !-axis. We also prepared samples with asymmetric splayed CDs, which bridge the splayed CDs and the tilted CDs, by starting from the tilted CDs and adding CDs along the symmetric direction with respect to the !-axis. In all cases, non-monotonic magnetic field dependence of Jc, which we call anomalous peak effect, is observed at some fraction of the matching field when the magnetic field is applied along the specific direction depending on the configuration of CDs. We propose a model that explains the behavior of the anomalous peak effect in samples with different configuration of CDs.

Peak Effects Induced by Particle Irradiations in 2H-NbSe2

Various peak effects in 2H-NbSe2 single crystals induced by particle irradiations were studied. 3 MeV proton irradiation magnified the peak effect induced by order-disorder transition of vortices, where the peak field shifts from high fields to low fields with increasing irradiation dose. For the peak effect in NbSe2 with splayed columnar defects (CDs), as the splayed angle increases, peak field gradually shifts from high fields to low fields. Numerical calculations have been conducted to investigate the mechanism of the peak effect. The calculated results exhibit excellent agreement with experimental observations. Analyses of field dependence of Jc reveal the formation of non-uniform Jc flow with increasing splayed angle, which plays a crucial role in inducing the self-field peak effect in superconductors with splayed CDs. In samples with symmetric splayed CDs with respect to the c-axis generated by 800 MeV Xe and 320 MeV Au ions, coexistence of order-disorder transition-induced peak effect and self-field peak effect was observed. In the case of 320 MeV Au irradiated samples, when the splay angle is small, the two peak effects transform into a broad peak, which has similarity to the anomalous peak effect observed in iron-based superconductors. Interestingly, the broad anomalous peak effect is strongly suppressed when the external magnetic field is applied parallel to one of splayed CDs.

Suppression of Superconductivity in Heavy-ion Irradiated 2H-NbSe2 Caused by Negative Pressure

Effects of columnar defects created by 320 MeV Au irradiation on 2H-NbSe2 single crystals with a dose equivalent matching field up to 16 T were studied. Critical temperature is found to be suppressed almost linearly at a rate of 0.07 K/T. At the same time, the lattice parameters a and c are found to be expanded at rates of 0.016%/T and 0.030%/T, respectively. Such a lattice expansion should work as negative pressure to affect Tc. By separating the effect of heavy-ion irradiation on Tc suppression through lattice expansion and disorder, it is found that Tc is suppressed more by lattice expansion rather than by disorder.

Anisotropic physical properties and large critical current density in KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ single crystal

We present a systematic study of electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, magneto-optical imaging, magnetization, and STEM analyses of KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ single crystals. Sharp diamagnetic transition and magneto-optical imaging reveal homogeneity of single crystal and prominent Bean-like penetrations of vortices. Large anisotropy of electrical resistivity, with ${ρ_c / ρ_{ab}}$ > 100, and semiconductor-like ${ρ_c}$ suggest that the electronic state is quasi two-dimensional. Hall effect measurements indicate that KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ is a multiband system with holes as main carriers. Magnetization measurements reveal significantly larger J$_c$ compared with that in other iron-based superconductors with different values of J$_c$ depending on the direction of magnetic field. Origin of these J$_c$ characteristics is discussed based on microstructural observations using STEM. In addition, further enhancement of J$_c$ in KCa${_2}$Fe${_4}$As${_4}$F${_2}$ for future application is demonstrated in terms of heavy-ion irradiation.

Large and significantly anisotropic critical current density induced by planar defects in CaKFe4As4 single crystals

Three independent components of critical current density, one for the H//c axis and the other two for the H//ab plane, have been studied in CaKFe4As4 single crystals. When the magnetic field is applied along the c axis, we observed fish-tail-like peaks in the M-H hysteresis loop, and the magnetization at higher temperatures exceeds that at lower temperatures at high fields. When the field is applied parallel to the ab plane, a dip structure is observed in the M-H hysteresis loop near the self-field. In addition, for the H//ab plane, we succeeded in separately evaluating the large and significantly anisotropic in-plane and out-of-plane Jc. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of planar defects parallel to the ab plane in CaKFe4As4, which have not been observed in any other iron-based superconductors. We discuss the possible relationship between the anomalous Jc behavior and the planar defects.

Superconductivity at 38 K in an electrochemical interface between ionic liquid and Fe(Se0.8Te0.2) on various substrates

Superconducting FeSe0.8Te0.2 thin films on SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and CaF2 substrates were electrochemically etched in an ionic liquid DEME-TFSI electrolyte with a gate bias of 5 V. Superconductivity at 38 K was commonly observed on all substrates after etching the films with a thickness above 30 nm, in spite of different Tc of 8 K, 12 K and 19 K before the etching on SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and CaF2 substrates, respectively. Tc returned to the original value by removing the gate bias. The Tc enhancement on the thick film indicates no relationship between the Tc enhancement and any interface effects between the film and the substrate. The sheet resistance and the Hall coefficient of the surface conducting layer were estimated from the gate bias dependence of the transport properties. The sheet resistance of the surface conducting layer of the films on LaAlO3 and CaF2 showed an identical temperature dependence, and the Hall coefficient is almost temperature independent and -0.05 to -0.2 m2/C, corresponding to 4-17 electrons per one FeSe0.8Te0.2 unit cell area in two dimension. These common transport properties on various substrates suggest that the superconductivity at 38 K appeared in the surface conducting layer produced by electrochemical reaction between the surface of the FeSe0.8Te0.2 thin film and the ionic liquid electrolyte.

Field-driven transition in the Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor with splayed columnar defects

Through 2.6 GeV U irradiations, we have induced bimodal splayed columnar defects in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with splay angles, $\pm 5 ^\circ$, $\pm 10 ^\circ$, $\pm 15 ^\circ$, and $\pm 20 ^\circ$. Critical current densities through magnetization measurements were carefully evaluated, where a splay angle of $\pm 5 ^\circ$ brought about the highest $J_\mathrm{c}$. Mageto-optical images close to $T_\mathrm{c}$ indicates highly anisotropic discontinuity lines in the remnant state, and with anisotropy increasing with greater splay angles. Moreover, amongst those with splayed columnar defects, anomalous non-monotonic field dependences of $J_\mathrm{c}$ and $S$ with an extrema at some fraction of the matching field are observed. We discuss that such $J_\mathrm{c}$ enhancement arises from a field-driven coupling transition in which intervortex interactions reorganize the vortex structure to be accommodated into columnar defects, thereby increasing pinning at higher fields.

Effects of heavy-ion irradiation on FeSe

We report the effects of heavy-ion irradiation on FeSe single crystals by irradiating Uranium up to a dose equivalent matching field of $B_ϕ$ = 16 T. Almost continuous columnar defects along the $c$-axis with a diameter $\sim$10 nm are confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. $T_c$ is found to be suppressed by introducing columnar defects at a rate of d$T_c$/d$B_ϕ$ $\sim$ -0.29KT$^{-1}$, which is much larger than those observed in iron pnictides. This unexpected large suppression of $T_c$ in FeSe is discussed in relation to the large diameter of the columnar defects as well as its unique band structure with a remarkably small Fermi energy. The critical current density is first dramatically enhanced with irradiation reaching a value over $\sim$2$\times$10$^5$ A/cm$^2$ ($\sim$5 times larger than that of the pristine sample) at 2 K (self-field) with $B_ϕ$ = 2 T, then gradually suppressed with increasing $B_ϕ$. The $δ$$l$-pinning associated with charge-carrier mean free path fluctuations, and the $δ$$T_c$-pinning associated with spatial fluctuations of the transition temperature are found to coexist in the pristine FeSe, while the irradiation increases the contribution from $δ$$l$-pinning, and makes it dominant over $B_ϕ$ = 4 T.

Hall-plot of the phase diagram for Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. However, it is well known that in the critical region near a quantum phase transition, as it was demonstrated for cuprates and heavy fermions, the Hall coefficient exhibits strong temperature and doping dependencies, which can not be described by such a simple expression, and the interpretation of the Hall coefficient for Fe-based superconductors is also problematic. Here, we investigate thin films of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with compressive and tensile in-plane strain in a wide range of Co doping. Such in-plane strain changes the band structure of the compounds, resulting in various shifts of the whole phase diagram as a function of Co doping. We show that the resultant phase diagrams for different strain states can be mapped onto a single phase diagram with the Hall number. This universal plot is attributed to the critical fluctuations in multiband systems near the antiferromagnetic transition, which may suggest a direct link between magnetic and superconducting properties in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system.

Influence of substrate type on transport properties of superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films

FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on CaF2, LaAlO3 and MgO substrates and structurally and electro-magnetically characterized in order to study the influence of the substrate on their transport properties. The in-plane lattice mismatch between FeSe0.5Te0.5 bulk and the substrates shows no influence on the lattice parameters of the films, whereas the type of substrates affects the crystalline quality of the films and, therefore, the superconducting properties. The film on MgO showed an extra peak in the angular dependence of critical current density Jc(θ) at θ = 180° (H || c), which arises from c-axis defects as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. In contrast, no Jc(θ) peaks for H || c were observed in films on CaF2 and LaAlO3. Jc(θ) can be scaled successfully for both films without c-axis correlated defects by the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (AGL) approach with appropriate anisotropy ratio γJ. The scaling parameter γJ is decreasing with decreasing temperature, which is different from what we observed in FeSe0.5Te0.5 films on Fe-buffered MgO substrates.

Highly textured oxypnictide superconducting thin films on metal substrates

Highly textured NdFeAs(O,F) thin films have been grown on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD)-MgO/Y2O3/Hastelloy substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The oxypnictide coated conductors showed a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 43 K with a self-field critical current density (Jc) of 7.0 x 104 A/cm2 at 5 K, more than 20 times higher than powder-in-tube processed SmFeAs(O,F) wires. Albeit higher Tc as well as better crystalline quality than Co-doped BaFe2As2 coated conductors, in-field Jc of NdFeAs(O,F) was lower than that of Co-doped BaFe2As2. These results suggest that grain boundaries in oxypnictides reduce Jc significantly compared to that in Co-doped BaFe2As2 and, hence biaxial texture is necessary for high Jc.

Oxypnictide SmFeAs(O,F) superconductor: a candidate for high-field magnet applications

The recently discovered oxypnictide superconductor SmFeAs(O,F) is the most attractive material among the Fe-based superconductors due to its highest transition temperature of 56 K and potential for high-field performance. In order to exploit this new material for superconducting applications, the knowledge and understanding of its electro-magnetic properties are needed. Recent success in fabricating epitaxial SmFeAs(O,F) thin films opens a great opportunity to explore their transport properties. Here we report on a high critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm^2 at 45 T and 4.2 K for both main field orientations, feature favourable for high-field magnet applications. Additionally, by investigating the pinning properties, we observed a dimensional crossover between the superconducting coherence length and the FeAs interlayer distance at 30-40 K, indicative of a possible intrinsic Josephson junction in SmFeAs(O,F) at low temperatures that can be employed in electronics applications such as a terahertz radiation source and a superconducting Qubit.

Intrinsic pinning and the critical current scaling of clean epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films

We report on the transport properties of clean, epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films prepared on Fe-buffered MgO (001) single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Near Tc a steep slope of the upper critical field for H||ab was observed (74.1 T/K), leading to a very short out-of-plane coherence length, ξc, of 0.2 nm, yielding 2ξc(0) approximately 0.4 nm. This value is shorter than the interlayer distance (0.605 nm) between Fe-Se(Te) planes, indicative of modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the c-axis. An inverse correlation between the power law exponent N of the electric field-current density (E-J) curve and the critical current density, Jc, has been observed at 4 K, when the orientation of H was close to the ab-plane. These results prove the presence of intrinsic pinning in Fe(Se,Te). A successful scaling of the angular dependent Jc and the corresponding exponent N can be realized by the anisotropic Ginzburg Landau approach with appropriate Γvalues 2~3.5. The temperature dependence of Γbehaves almost identically to that of the penetration depth anisotropy.

Versatile fluoride substrates for Fe-based superconducting thin films

We demonstrate the growth of Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films on AEF2 (001) (AE: Ca, Sr, Ba) single crystal substrates using pulsed laser deposition. All films are grown epitaxially despite of a large misfit of -10.6% for BaF2 substrate. For all films a reaction layer is formed at the interface confirmed by X-ray diffraction and by transmission electron microscopy. The superconducting transition temperature of the film on CaF2 is around 27 K, whereas the corresponding values of the other films are around 21 K. The Ba-122 on CaF2 shows identical crystalline quality and superconducting properties as films on Fe-buffered MgO.

Systematic Comparison of Eight Substrates in the Growth of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ Superconducting Thin Films

We have investigated the crystal structures and superconducting properties of thin films of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ grown on eight different substrates. Superconductivity is not correlated with the lattice mismatch; rather it is correlated with the degree of in-plane orientation and with the lattice parameter ratio $c/a$. The best superconducting properties were observed in films on MgO and LaAlO$_3$ ($T_\mathrm{c}^\mathrm{zero}$ of 9.5 K). TEM observation showed that the presence or absence of an amorphous-like layer at the substrate surface plays a key role in determining the structural and superconducting properties of the grown films.
