Steady-state spin synchronization through the collective motion of trapped ions

Ultranarrow-linewidth atoms coupled to a lossy optical cavity mode synchronize, i.e. develop correlations, and exhibit steady-state superradiance when continuously repumped. This type of system displays rich collective physics and promises metrological applications. These features inspire us to investigate if analogous spin synchronization is possible in a different platform that is one of the most robust and controllable experimental testbeds currently available: ion-trap systems. We design a system with a primary and secondary species of ions that share a common set of normal modes of vibration. In analogy to the lossy optical mode, we propose to use a lossy normal mode, obtained by sympathetic cooling with the secondary species of ions, to mediate spin synchronization in the primary species of ions. Our numerical study shows that spin-spin correlations develop, leading to a macroscopic collective spin in steady-state. We propose an experimental method based on Ramsey interferometry to detect signatures of this collective spin; we predict that correlations prolong the visibility of Ramsey fringes, and that population statistics at the end of the Ramsey sequence can be used to directly infer spin-spin correlations.

A Nano-satellite Mission to Study Charged Particle Precipitation from the Van Allen Radiation Belts caused due to Seismo-Electromagnetic Emissions

In the past decade, several attempts have been made to study the effects of seismo-electromagnetic emissions - an earthquake precursor, on the ionosphere and the radiation belts. The IIT Madras nano-satellite (IITMSAT) mission is designed to make sensitive measurements of charged particle fluxes in a Low Earth Orbit to study the nature of charged particle precipitation from the Van Allen radiation belts caused due to such emissions. With the Space-based Proton Electron Energy Detector on-board a single nano-satellite, the mission will attempt to gather statistically significant data to verify possible correlations with seismo-electromagnetic emissions before major earthquakes.

Dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with a quantum environment

We examine the dynamics of subsystems of bipartite and tripartite quantum systems with nonlinear Hamiltonians. We consider two models which capture the generic features of open quantum systems: a three-level atom interacting with a single-mode radiation field, and a three-level atom interacting with two field modes which do not directly interact with each other. The entanglement of specific initially unentangled states of the atom-field system is examined through the time-varying subsystem von Neumann entropy (SVNE). The counterparts of near-revivals and fractional revivals of the initial state are clearly identifiable in the SVNE in all cases where revival phenomena occur. The Mandel $Q$ parameter corresponding to the photon number of a radiation field is obtained as a function of time in both models. In those cases where revivals are absent, a time series analysis of the mean photon number reveals a variety of ergodicity properties (as manifested in return maps, recurrence-time distributions and Lyapunov exponents), depending on the strength of the nonlinearity and the degree of coherence of the initial state of the radiation field(s).
