Light curve analysis of six totally eclipsing W UMa binaries

We analyze multicolor light curves of six totally eclipsing, short-period W UMa binaries and derive, for the first time, their orbital and stellar parameters. The mass ratios are established robustly through an automated q-search procedure that performs a heuristic survey of the parameter space. Five stars belong to the W and one to the A subtype. The mass ratios range from 0.23 to 0.51 and the fillouts from 10 to 15%. We estimate the ages and discuss the evolutionary status of these objects in comparison with a sample of other short-period W UMa binaries from the literature.

Light curve modeling of four short-period W UMa binaries

We use extensive model grids to estimate the global parameters of four partially-eclipsing W UMa contact binaries near the period cutoff. All four systems consist of K-type main sequence primaries and M-type secondaries that appear undersized and underluminous for their masses because of the energy transfer through the common envelope. Three of the four stars exhibit light curve asymmetry that is explained in terms of magnetic activity and modeled with dark spots. We discuss the reliability of the photometric mass ratios and derived absolute parameters in context of total or partial eclipses and compare them with a sample of totally-eclipsing short-period W UMa systems from the literature.

Eccentric orbits and apsidal motion in the eclipsing binaries EK Cep and HS Her

We present the first modern analysis of two young, eclipsing binaries, EK Cep and HS Her, based on new, ground-based, CCD multicolour light curves as well as the TESS observations, radial velocity curves, and eclipse timing measurements. The orbital and stellar parameters of the stars are determined by Roche modelling, and their evolutionary status is examined using a grid of isochrones and evolutionary tracks. We find that HS Her is 25-32 Myr old and its components are on the zero-age main sequence; at the age of 16-20 Myr, the primary of EK Cep is also on the ZAMS, but its secondary is a pre-main-sequence star. Both binaries have slightly eccentric orbits and display apsidal motion. Based on updated eclipse timings and spectroscopic evidence, we rule out the presence of a previously hypothesized tertiary component in HS Her.

Statistics of 700 individually studied W UMa stars

We present a statistical study of the largest bibliographic compilation of stellar and orbital parameters of W UMa stars derived by light curve synthesis with Roche models. The compilation includes nearly 700 individually investigated objects from over 450 distinct publications. Almost 70% of this sample is comprised of stars observed in the last decade that have not been considered in previous statistical studies. We estimate the ages of the cataloged stars, model the distributions of their periods, mass ratios, temperatures and other quantities, and compare them with the data from CRTS, LAMOST and Gaia archives. As only a small fraction of the sample has radial velocity curves, we examine the reliability of the photometric mass ratios in totally and partially eclipsing systems and find that totally eclipsing W UMa stars with photometric mass ratios have the same parameter distributions as those with spectroscopic mass ratios. Most of the stars with reliable parameters have mass ratios below 0.5 and orbital periods shorter than 0.5 days. Stars with longer periods and temperatures above 7000 K stand out as outliers and shouldn't be labeled as W UMa binaries. The collected data is available as an online database at https://wumacat.aob.rs.
